PUBLIC VERSION. Filmmaker Philippe Mora (THE BEAST WITHIN, MAD DOG MORGAN, HOWLING II: …YOUR SISTER IS A WEREWOLF, HOWLING III, COMMUNION) joins Adam, Joe, and Arwen in the ArieScope studio to discuss his long and incredible career. Born in France and raised in Australia, Mora's artistic journey has been so remarkable that you need to hear it to believe it! From being the godson of legendary mime performer Marcel Marceau (also known as “Bip the Clown”)… to becoming roommates with a VERY famous rock star who would wind up helping to finance his first feature film… to hiring an actual crazy person to play a crazy person in his debut feature TROUBLE IN MOLOPOLIS (1969)… to how “steak tartare” helped get him his first American directing gig… to the very famous sci-fi costumes that mistakenly showed up on the set of HOWLING II and wound up being used in the film… Mora's story is one of the most fascinating, hilarious, and inspiring that we've heard in over 11 years of this weekly podcast so far. You're going to absolutely LOVE this conversation!

ONE IN THE HOPPER - DENNIS HOPPER'S MADMAN ERA   Between 1969 and 1980 Dennis Hopper directed three movies he also starred in. The first, EASY RIDER (1969), is one of the great Hollywood success stories. Made for peanuts by a studio who didn't know what kids wanted, it tapped into the zeitgeist and remains one of the all-time great road movies and soundtracks with indelible characters tripping toward an iconic ending. Hopper was given complete control over his next film, THE LAST MOVIE (1971), which was a long-simmering idea Hopper had hatched in the sixties and was very nearly made before Rider. The film shoot in Peru was fraught with drug-use, improvisation and stunning Laslo Kovacs' cinematography at 12k feet. Then Hopper retreated to edit and it kept getting delayed and... delayed. During this time LM Kit Carson and Lawrence Schiller made a documentary about Hopper editing  The Last Movie in New Mexico called THE AMERICAN DREAMER (1971) and, folks, some of it may be performative but it is a gonzo portrait of epic indulgence. So much that the final result of The Last Movie makes more sense. The failure of The Last Movie sent Hopper into movie jail for the next decade, periodically popping up as a bit character or appearing in low budget or European films to bring an unnerving sense of real danger (Mad Dog Morgan, Tracks, The American Friend, Apocalypse Now, etc.) until he was cast in a sedate Canadian family film called CeBe. Hopper took over a troubled early production, reimagined the entire film as a nihilistic spiritual sequel to Easy Rider over a weekend - literally basing the new narrative on the titular Neil Young song - and swooped in as director and made one of the greatest, darkest films of the still-nascent 1980s, OUT OF THE BLUE.  If you have not seen Out of the Blue, we highly recommend you do so before listening to this portion of this episode. Hopper went into rehab in '83. He would direct four more movies but they were yeoman, journeyman works of a pro, not his legendarily transgressive earlier work. For his family, friends and loved ones, his relative health and financial stability the next three decades brought was a blessing, of course, we would never say otherwise. For cinema fans, however, the unhinged genius that made Rider, Movie and Blue... was never seen again. Email: thegoodthepodandtheugly@gmail.comFacebook: https://m.facebook.com/TGTPTUInstagram: https://instagram.com/thegoodthepodandtheugly?igshid=um92md09kjg0Twitter: https://twitter.com/thegoodthepoda1YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC6mI2plrgJu-TB95bbJCW-gBuzzsprout: https://thegoodthepodandtheugly.buzzsprout.com/Letterboxd (follow us!):Ken: Ken KoralJack: jackk1096

On this episode of the Video Junkyard Podcast, Erik and Joe review the 1976 Australian exploitation/biopic "Mad Dog Morgan", directed by Phillipe Mora and starring Dennis Hopper, Frank Thring, and David Gulpilil. Mad Dog Morgan tells the story of Daniel Morgan, an Irish gold panner living as a bushranger in the Australian outback in the 1860s. Violent, drunk, and wild, Morgan evades capture from the Government of South Wales and leaves a trail of blooshed in his wake. Dennis Hopper brings Morgan to life (sort of?) in this particularly bizarre film from down under. Check out the movie on PlutoTV for free and join us for the breakdown on the Video Junkyard Podcast!

Today we're joined by friend of the show Joey Kuriki for a trip down under to talk about infamous outlaw, Daniel "Mad Dog" Morgan. Danny boy ran/rode horses all around New South Wales visiting all the goofiest named places so that he could rob people, or shoot them, or force them to make him breakfast. Whatever he was feeling that day really. He may have had a touch of mental illness, or maybe he really was just a full on psycho, but either way he loved violence. Enjoy!

We've never before dug into the fertile field of Australian genre movies here on The Bloody Pit which means it is long overdue. The classic Ozploitation period is generally thought of has having lasted from the middle of the 1970's to the late 1980's which seems a short length of time until you look at the number of films that fall into this category. There are more than three dozen movies produced just in the 1980's that comfortably fit under the Ozploitation umbrella with several worldwide hits like MAD MAX 2 (1982), ROAD GAMES (1981), RAZORBACK (1984) and DEAD-END DRIVE-IN (1986) being most well-known. Add to that list 70's stunners such as MAD DOG MORGAN (1976), THE MAN FROM HONG KONG (1975), PATRICK (1978) and the ground breaking MAD MAX (1979) and it becomes clear that the Australian output of horror, action and post-apocalyptic cinema has had powerful, long lasting influence. But, in many cases, the Aussie versions of exploitation fodder was following the prevailing trends and copying successes as best they could. And that brings us to this movie!   Director Brian Trenchard-Smith has described TURKEY SHOOT (1982) as a movie in which "1984 meets The Camp on Blood Island where they play 'The Most Dangerous Game'". If that isn't a perfect enticement for curious, thrill-seeking movie goers I don't know what could be! John Hudson and Bobby Hazzard join me for a rollicking discussion of this astonishing piece of sadistic insanity. We marvel at the actors willing to put themselves through this crazed scenario with emphasis on the pure hell of trying to shoot a film under very difficult circumstances. We toss around many strange metaphors as we attempt to describe the action of the story and have great fun watching people blow up real good! I'm not sure how but somehow Gilligan's Island is invoked alongside a discussion of pants stuffed with raw meat and dummy deaths. Oh! And Bobby manages to make me do an actual spit-take! Waste of good beer, sadly.  If you have any comments or questions thebloodypit@gmail.com is the email address for the show. Let us know what you think of TURKEY SHOOT or your favorite Ozploitation film. Should we cover more of them? Could be fun! Thank you for listening.

Mad Dog Morgan was one of Australia’s most feared bushrangers. Resentful, bitter and bent on revenge after being wrongly convicted, Morgan terrorised the Australian countryside and was known for his erratic, violent and rambunctious behaviour. His tendency toward impulsive cruelty and unpredictable mood swings earned him his title ‘Mad Dog’. Morgan would often brutally murder his victims, only to weep and beg for forgiveness as they lay dying in his arms. As we near the end of Mike White March, we come upon the curious case of Mad Dog Morgan, a film that benefits having prior knowledge about the insane behind the scenes machinations due to the powerhouse of acting that was Dennis Hopper. Starring the Hopper mentioned above, the film follows the exploits of the infamous bushranger and all around ne'er-do-well Dan "Mad Dog" Morgan as he caused trouble for the Australian government in the mid-1800s. Dennis Hopper's offscreen antics translate to a true method performance as the unhinged Morgan along with some cinema verite style that is reminiscent of Alejandro Jodorowsky. The Projection Booth's Mike White joins Chris once again to talk Hopper's performance, the translation from page to screen, and more familiar faces from Aussie cinema. You can follow Chris Stachiw at @KultureStach and the Kulturecast @kulturecast. Who Will Serve Food & Drink at Brigantine Links? Listen> Jim Fraser; former owner of Mays Landing Country Club talk about The Links at Brigantine Golf Course. They're looking for someone to take over Food & Beverage and Jim was there for the 'walk-thru' on March 2. An RFP was sent out recently order to attract a vendor that would feed & provide drink inside the Links Clubhouse at the north end of the island. Pirates Den, Cellar 32 and Mad Dog Morgan were 3 of the 6 potential bidders who did a walk-thru of the facilities on WED March 2. Brigantine Links Manager; Nathan, said that 23,000 rounds were played in 2015. Fraser thinks that Brigantine needs at least 30,000 rounds with an average price per round $40 to be successful. 'Anemic' is how Fraser described the 2015 revenue numbers that Mad Dog Morgan brought in last season. The Links food & bev operation called Morgan's Pub, only brought in $270,000 as reported by Morgan himself. Many of Morgan's utilities like electricity, WIFI and TV were subsidized by Brigantine Taxpayers. Morgan was able to leverage the City's concessionaires permit which made it very cheap for Mad Dog to serve beer & spirits.
