Cass Elliot, AKA "Mama Cass" from The Mamas and The Papas, broke the mold of female pop superstardom and shattered expectations of what women in music “should” be. She also was arrested in London for theft, dated international drug dealers, and tanked what was supposed to be a career-defining solo performance while flying high on Iranian hashish. To this day, the biggest controversy swirling around the singer is her connection to the 1969 Manson Family murders. Her actions during the so-called “Summer of Love” might even be why the motive for the murders America has come to accept as fact…is actually entirely false. Sharon Tate was a sophisticated beauty who literally stopped traffic when she walked down the street. She began her movie career when America was becoming sexually liberated, and despite the ease with which she was made a sex symbol, she aspired to be respected as a serious actress. Decades later, however, she is perhaps best-remembered as one of the victims found brutally murdered at her Cielo Drive home, the one she shared with her husband, director Roman Polanski. Sharon and Roman welcomed regular guests to that home, including Sharon's friend, Mama Cass Elliot, who was at the center of the Manson murders and whose actions may be why the motive for the murders that America has come to accept as fact is actually false. While three of the band's four members (John Phillips, Michelle Phillips, and Denny Doherty) have told their side of the story, Shea sorts through the fact, fiction, and finger-pointing to tell us how the artistic and commercial success of the Mamas & the Papas was often fueled by the unending interpersonal drama and sexual liaisons that nearly sunk the group before it even started. Front and center is the tragic story of "Mama Cass" Elliot, whose incredible talent gave the group an iconic sound that set it apart--and who John Phillips never wanted in the group. Shea draws on new interviews with former bandmates, session musicians, family members, and many others. A new interview with Jill Gibson (who briefly replaced Michelle when John discovered that Michelle was having an affair with Gene Clark of The Byrds) sheds new light on the group-and a short, but meaningful London meeting in 1966 between the group and three of the Beatles and Mick Jagger and Keith Richards of the Rolling Stones. Readers of popular music biographies by Peter Ames Carlin and Jonathan Gould (among others) are sure to admire Shea's ability to balance his unflinching account of the band's history with a true understanding and appreciation of their music. Like Carlin and Gould, Shea tells the story as narrative nonfiction. We're thrust back into the era of the Mamas & the Papas, connecting with the emotions of the band members as their story unfolds and unravels. It's one of the reasons why ALL THE LEAVES ARE BROWN has already been optioned for film and TV.

Few songs have captured the contradictions and ambiguities of the 1960s as memorably as “California Dreamin',” the iconic folk music single that catapulted the Mamas & the Papas into rock and roll history. In All the Leaves Are Brown, author Scott Shea details how John Phillips, Denny Doherty, Michelle Phillips, and “Mama Cass” Elliot became standard-bearers for California counterculture, following their transformation from folk music wannabes to rock sensations and chronicling the tumultuous events that followed their unexpected success. Shea gives a definitive account of the group's short time together, from their hitmaking approach with legendary producer Lou Adler to John's unique songwriting to tours and friendships with other musicians riding the folk-rock wave. He explores the emotional vicissitudes that came with being in the Mamas & the Papas, from Cass's unrequited love for Denny, his affair with Michelle, and the ebb and flow of dysfunction in John and Michelle's marriage. And he explains how it all came to a crashing end with John's brainchild, the Monterey Pop Festival, which should have launched the group even further into the musical stratosphere, but only served to be their undoing. Drawing on new interviews with former bandmates, session musicians, family members, and many others, All the Leaves Are Brown is a layered, revelatory tale of overnight stardom and its many pitfalls.

For this very special episode five people have gathered to discuss an influential part of their childhood – H. R. Pufnstuf!  In particular we examine the movie that grew out of the children television show's immense popularity – PUFNSTUF (1970). So, grab your magic flute and come to Living Island for an adventure you'll never forget – no matter how hard you try. Wild, man! I am joined by Beth, Troy Guinn, John Hudson and Steph to talk about the biggest hit of Sid & Marty Krofft's many Saturday morning TV programs. Each of us relate our history with the various shows and what we thought of them as kids before diving into the specifics of the big screen version. We dig into the Krofft brothers' background as puppet performers, their early successes on the stage and the genesis of Pufnstuf as a character. We take note of a fun Universal Horror related song from their early 1960's adult puppet show and then turn things toward the amazing songs created for the film. We talk about the cast with Jack Wild's place in the hearts of young girls becoming a subject of some amusement while Billie Hayes' immortal Witchiepoo is lauded as the best reason to watch either the film or the television show. Favorite lines of dialog are quoted and we wonder aloud if some of the best bits were adlibbed by Miss Hayes or not. We also talk about Mama Cass Elliot's excellent performance as Witch Hazel and single out her song as a highlight. This really is a delightful movie! If you want to share your own memories of the old Sid & Marty Krofft shows thebloodypit@gmail.com is the place to send them. We hope you enjoy this slightly chaotic trip into Saturday mornings past. This episode contains themes that may be disturbing to some listeners, including sexual assault and suicide. Zoinks! It's a g-g-ghost! Oh, nope, it's Scooby Doo and the gang. For more than 50 years these eternally young teenagers have been solving mysteries and catching bad guys. Jay and Shua take a look at the history of one of the most legendary cartoons ever on Enjoy Stuff.    Hey Scoob, is that a Spooky Space Kook or is it a Ghost Clown? Whatever the villain, Scooby, Shaggy, Fred, Daphne, and Velma are sure to catch them. Scooby Doo has been a staple for generations. What has kept them going? Who were the best bad guys? And where are the Scooby snacks? It's coming from original series creator J. Michael Straczynski What we're Enjoying Jay is digging the Hulu series Y the Last Man, based on the comic books. Do you think you could survive a world with only one dude? Just in case it might happen, you may want to watch this series. Shua has been revisiting an art book he got a few years ago. Cartoon Modern by Amid Amidi discusses the modernist 50s animation that was so popular in that decade. It's a collection of beautiful, abstract cartooning.  Enjoy Cartoons In 1969 Joe Ruby and Ken Spears came up with a premise for a show that was inspired by Abbot and Costello scary movies. The cartoon wasn't all that original, but it was well done and it sure was fun!   Scooby Doo, Where Are You? Was the first series, but it spawned dozens of follow ups. Still, those originals are beloved by generations. Even the clunky animation and repetitive plot structure didn't deter us from tuning in for years and years.    The New Scooby Doo movies brought in famous characters and actors into the world of Scooby. These longer episodes crossed over into other worlds and sometimes introduced us to people we may not have known, like Mama Cass Elliot or Don Knotts. Batman and Robin stopped by and even the Harlem Globetrotters.   Sometimes Shaggy and Scooby set off on their own, and occasionally had to drag Scrappy along. These series may not have been as memorable, but it kept Scooby on people's TV.    Sometimes the gang were depicted as young kids, sometimes more intricately animated, and sometimes they became post-apocalyptic zombie hunters. Eventually, their iconic status brought them to the live action movie screen.    These meddling kids continue to drive around in their Mystery Machine and solve mysteries, and we're confident they'll be entertaining us for years to come.   What's your favorite version of Scooby Doo? Discogs: Dave Mason was a founding member of the group Traffic, but left following the release of their debut album, Mr. Fantasy (1967), only to rejoin halfway through the sessions for their next album, Traffic (1968), after which he left again. Last Exit (1969), a compilation of odds and ends, features little material by Mason apart from his song "Just for You". Traffic later re-formed without Mason, although he briefly began working with the band for a third time, touring with them in 1971 and playing on Welcome to the Canteen. In his brief spells with the group, Mason never quite fit in; Steve Winwood later recalled. In 1970, Mason was slated to be the second guitarist for Derek and the Dominos. He played on their early studio sessions, including the Phil Spector production of "Tell the Truth", which was later withdrawn from sale (and is now a collector's item). He also played at their first gig at the London Lyceum but left the group soon after that. For a brief period in the mid-1990s, Mason joined Fleetwood Mac and released the album Time with them in 1995. He toured with them over the course of 1994–95. Over the course of his career, Mason has played and recorded with many notable pop and rock musicians, including Jimi Hendrix, the Rolling Stones (e.g. on Street Fighting Man), George Harrison (appearing on All Things Must Pass), Paul McCartney, Eric Clapton, Michael Jackson, David Crosby, Graham Nash, Steve Winwood, Fleetwood Mac, Delaney & Bonnie, Leon Russell, and...Cass Elliot. One of Mason's best-known songs is "Feelin' Alright", recorded by Traffic in 1968 and later by many other performers, including Joe Cocker, whose version of the song was a hit in 1969. For Traffic, he also wrote "Hole in My Shoe", a psychedelic pop song that became a hit in its own right. "We Just Disagree", Mason's 1977 solo US hit, written by Jim Krueger, has become a staple of US classic hits and adult contemporary radio playlists. Cass Elliot was credited with creating the group name 'The Mamas and The Papas' while watching a TV program, with the other band members, while temporarily residing in the U.S. Virgin Islands. Although some releases were still credited to Mama Cass Elliot, it was around this time that she used her original stage name, Cass Elliot. She starred in many a TV show including two specials of her own. She was loved and is still admired for her pleasing alto and all-around ability to entertain. In her way, she was as troubled as her other drug-taking contemporaries like Jim Morrison, in addition to her life-long weight problems which probably kept her close to people but not so close that her loneliness abated. She, to me, sounds like an American Annie Haslam.  So if you didn't know that these two members of the RRHOF did an album together, now you do!  Wiki: After being introduced by a mutual friend, Mason and Elliot hit it off and decided to pursue singing together professionally. Elliot, having released two solo albums at that time, missed the collaborative effort of producing music, and Mason, who had just arrived in the U.S. after splitting with Traffic, was interested in a fresh collaboration. Originally Elliot was intended to be co-producer with Mason on an intended solo album by the latter: after Elliot sang background for Mason on some sessions the idea of the album being a Mason/Elliot collaboration emerged.  Dave Mason and Cass Elliot - Glittering Facade (1971) Dave Mason and Cass Elliot - Sit and Wonder (1971) Dave Mason - Every Woman (1973) Dave Mason - Shouldn't Have Took More Than You Gave (1970) Dave Mason - Save Me (1980) Michael Jackson on backing vocals.  Dave Mason and Cass Elliot - On and On (1971) Cass Elliot - I'll Be There (1972) Cass Elliot (billed as Mama Cass Elliot) - It's Getting Better (1969) Cass Elliot - New World Coming (1970) Dave Mason - The Lonely One (1973) Stevie Wonder on harmonica solo.    Laura Nyro - Beads of Sweat (1970) Laura Nyro (rhymes with "Hero") was a female Jimmy Webb (or he a male Laura Nyro) who reinvented songwriting possibilities for a generation. She influenced so many writers that I cannot list them here. Her influence really shows itself in the works of Todd Rundgren, Elton John, Patti Smith, so so many. She merged the melodic gifts of Carole King with the lyrical ones of Bob Dylan. You know her songs. Between 1968 and 1970, a number of artists had hits with her songs: The 5th Dimension with "Blowing Away", "Wedding Bell Blues", "Stoned Soul Picnic", "Sweet Blindness", and "Save the Country"; Blood, Sweat & Tears and Peter, Paul and Mary, with "And When I Die"; Three Dog Night and Maynard Ferguson, with "Eli's Comin'"; and Barbra Streisand with "Stoney End", "Time and Love", and "Hands off the Man (Flim Flam Man)". Ironically, Nyro's best-selling single was her recording of Carole King's and Gerry Goffin's "Up on the Roof". Laura Nyro - Eli's Coming (1968) Laura Nyro - New York Tendaberry (1969) Laura Nyro - Mr. Blue (1978) Laura Nyro - Smile (1976) Cockney Rebel - Psychomodo (1974) Steve Harley and Cockney Rebel - Make Me Smile (Come Up and See Me) (1976) Steve Harley and Cockney Rebel - Sebastian (1973) Paul Revere and the Raiders - Ain't Nothing Wrong (1976) Everybody tried disco. Everybody. This song was written by Harry Casey and Rick Finch! Flopped.   Johnny Cougar - Need Somebody Baby (1976) Like my unfortunate management deal that forced me to call myself "Sir Gilbert Slitherbottom VI", John Mellencamp's management had no idea who or what he was. He started out for a brief period of time as a "glam rocker" but then tried out for a solo career with his first album Chestnut Street Incident released by former David Bowie manager Tony DeFries on the Mainman (division of MCA) label. That album was a complete flop partly due to the fact that the record label wanted to mold John into something he was not (a pretty boy ala James Dean) and the fact that the album mostly consisted of cover songs.  Johnny Cougar - The Man Who Sold the World (1976) What a strange curio from the early days of John Mellencamp.  Queen - All Dead, All Dead (1977) The Spotlights - Batman and Robin (1966) Produced by Leon Russell and Snuff Garrett. Gig's a gig! Dion and the Belmonts - My Girl the Month of May (1966) This album features the song "For Bobbie" which was written by John Denver, and he recorded it himself in 1972, retitling it' "For Baby." Mick Taylor - Leather Jacket (1979) Moody Blues - Veteran Cosmic Rocker (1981) Ruth Copeland - The Silent Boatman (1970) Do you prefer this version or the one by Parliament?

Harvey Brooks is one of the most respected and emulated bassists and producers in the history of rock and jazz music. After being the lucky recipient of a B.B. King record at a synagogue dance contest as a kid, he was inspired to pursue playing the blues and R&B. After playing live gigs tirelessly for years, his old friend, keyboardist and guitarist Al Kooper, invited Harvey to a Bob Dylan recording session to play bass, the tracks of which became the seminal “Highway 61 Revisited” album. Harvey went on to appear on a mind-blowing string of classic albums, as a founding member of The Electric Flag and on such stand-outs as The Doors’ “Soft Parade,” Miles Davis’ “Bitches Brew,” and Al Kooper’s “Super Session.” He also produced such masterpieces as Quicksilver Messenger Service’s debut album and Karen Dalton’s “My Own Time.”In this interview, Harvey talks about keeping himself alive and sane amidst the drug culture of the late ‘60s. He discusses how me met the challenge of Dylan’s mid-‘60s audience turning on him for changing to electric music, including a live concert at Forest Hills, New Jersey where the audience rushed the stage and were tackled by security, while Harvey played alongside Robbie Robertson and Levon Helm of The Band. Harvey also talks about 3 a.m. jam sessions with Paul Butterfield, and serving as Mama Cass Elliot’s musical director at Caesar’s Palace.Earlier this year, Harvey released an autobiography entitled, “View from the Bottom: 50 Years of Bass Playing with Bob Dylan, The Doors, Miles Davis and Everybody Else.” The book is published by tangiblepress.net and can also be acquired on many online bookstores. Autographed copies and bookplates can only be procured at tangiblepress.net. The book was co-authored by Frank Beacham, a notable music historian and Bonnie Brooks, author of the children's book "Gramps Has A Ponytail,” also published by tangiblepress.net.

The Association released their debut (and most successful) album, And Then...Along Comes The Association in June 1966.  They had received some success with non-album releases prior to this, but the album itself would become one of the best selling albums of the year.  The Association was known as sunshine pop, which incorporated elements of both folk rock and psychedelic music.  The group was formed originally by Jules Alexander (guitar) and Terry Kirkman (wind instruments, percussion) who met in Hawaii in 1962, then reconnected in Los Angeles in the mid-60's.  They joined with Russ Giguere (rhythm guitar, percussion), Brian Cole (bass, woodwinds), Ted Bluechel, Jr. (drums, rhythm guitar, bass), and Jim Yester (rhythm guitar, keyboards) to make this album.  All group members contributed to vocals, and the group was known for their harmonies. The Association was first known as The Men, and played as the house band for The Troubadour where they would play with musicians such as Mama Cass Elliot and David Crosby. The Association would continue touring for decades, though with over 20 members throughout the time.  Enter the YoungThis deep cut is the lead song from the album.  It gives a good sense of the harmonies of the group.  The lyrics are an ode to the younger generation.  "Enter the young, yeah.  Yeah, they've learned how to think.  Enter the young, yeah.  More than you think they think."Your Own LoveAnother deep cut seems representative of the sounds typical of television shows of the time.  Russ Giguere takes the lead vocal duties on this one.  Along Comes MaryThis is a hit from the album.  The phrase itself was somewhat controversial, because "Mary" was a euphemism for marijuana, though the band never confirmed this.  Either way, Mary improves the life of the singer - "When we met I was sure out to lunch, now my empty cup tastes as sweet as the punch."  Jim Yester was on lead vocals for this hit.CherishA ballad would be the biggest hit off the album, and would have decades-long staying power.  Kirkman and Giguere share lead vocal duties.  The single runs 3 minutes and 13 seconds, but it was listed as "3:00" because radio programmers discouraged songs over the 3-minute limit. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Theme from the television series “The Dick Van Dyke Show”This comedy would end its run in June 1966. STAFF PICKS:“Opus 17 (Don't You Worry "Bout Me)” by The Four SeasonsBruce features the Jersey Boys in their prime.  This is the second single released after the title song from the album "Working My Way Back to You."  The song was written by Sandy Linzer and Denny Randell, who also wrote "Let's Hang On."  There are 5 key changes in this 2-1/2 minute song.“Dirty Water” by The StandellsWayne's staff pick mocks the city of Boston, Massachusetts and it's then infamously polluted Charles River and Boston Harbor.  Some elements of this song from the Los Angeles garage band were inspired by a Mugging of their producer, the women's curfew at Boston University, and even a mention of the Boston Strangler.  Fans of the Bruins and Red Sox will recognize this tune from hockey and baseball games.“Red Rubber Ball” by The CyrkleRob's staff pick was written by Paul Simon and Bruce Woodley, and reached number 2 on the charts.  Simon offered the song to the band when they were opening for Simon and Garfunkel on tour.  It’s a fun, positive song - "The morning sun is rising like a red rubber ball."“Kicks” by Paul Revere & the RaidersBrian finishes off the staff picks with a minor key song.  This is the first anti-drug song of the rock era.  It was  written by Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil as a warning to a friend about the dangers in drug use. COMEDY TRACK:“You Can't Roller Skate in a Buffalo Herd” by Roger MillerThis comedy track finishes off our session this week.  Stay away from those buffalo herds, but you can be happy if you want to!
