In this episode, we discuss our picks of the fortnight and focus on true crime documentary The Staircase and the issues that it brings up.    The Dark finale was definitely a highlight, a truly gripping series, with twists and turns as bonkers as those in Lost, with none of the incoherence and sheer wackiness. Palestinian filmmaker Sameer Qumsieh's doc Walled Citizen, in which he explores travelling with the world's lowest ranking passport was screened as part of the Galway FF selection. You will hopefully be able to catch it at the UK Adventure Travel film festival and the  Manhattan Film Festival in August. Korean Film Nights and Birkbeck's season- Trapped! The Cinema of Confinement starts this week. Kaveh Abbasian's A Long Distance podcast is on Soundcloud. Art of Persia is still available on BBC iPlayer.    Made-for-TV movie The Clark Sisters: First Ladies of Gospel (2019) proved to be more than a melodrama. It's about the price one family paid to change the gospel genre forever and the moving concert scenes are the icing on the cake. Other top picks are College Behind Bars (2019), a four-part documentary series profiling the Bard Prison Initiative (BPI) which is a vehicle for inmate rehabilitation, redemption and transformation; and Mucho Mucho Amor: The Legend of Walter Mercado (2020) which raises questions around gender and sexuality in Latin American media representation, but bizarrely not race, providing a cautionary tale of ownership and exploitation in show business.   We'll be focusing on Secorro's recommendation - The Staircase, currently available on Netflix, and discuss issues it brings up around culpability, social and marital expectations, the nature of factual evidence and all sorts of anecdotes. This week we chat with Christina Raia Christina grew up on Long Island with a single mother and one brother. Growing up multi-ethnic (her mom was born in Trinidad of Indian descent; her father's side is Sicilian with a touch of Austrian -- bet you didn't guess that when you looked at her), She had the privilege of never fitting in, which meant always feeling a bit out of place but also unable to be put in anyone else's box. Often an outside observer of people and their stories, She fell in love with movies very early on as a child. She can't quite pinpoint a moment in her childhood when She decided She wanted to be a filmmaker; it is simply a desire that has always been there. She began writing stories at age five and She attributes her interest in visual storytelling in large part to watching movies of very wide variety with her mom at a young age. Watching "The Twilight Zone" marathon every fourth of July was a family tradition and she credits that as a huge reason for her interest in screenwriting. She wrote Her first screenplay, or what She thought was a screenplay, at age nine. She knew her love for movies was something bigger than just an interest when a video camera was first placed in her hands at the age of 13. It was from that point forward that her passion in life was clearly defined. In high school, she attempted to make two "feature films" with a cast of friends and a crew of one, but those never quite panned out. After high school, she took a year off and honed in on her writing. she won a couple of online video contests and put the money towards funding her first big project. Christina enrolled in Hunter College in 2008 and made her first independent short, "Do Over," a psychological thriller, the summer after freshman year. She then graduated with honors with a BA in Film Production & Studies in 2012. Filmmaking & Community Leadership She is now a New York City based Writer/Director and the Founder and Team Leader of CongestedCat Productions, LLC. Synopsis Who is the man behind the most highly controversial, intensely debated topics in modern medicine? In The Pathological Optimist, director Miranda Bailey brings us a character study of Dr. Andrew Wakefield, one of 13 co-authors of a notorious 1998 paper in the UK medical Journal The Lancet, but who became the very public face of what has come to be known as “The Anti-Vax Movement.” An expat from Britain who currently resides in Austin, Texas, Wakefield allowed Bailey and her team to follow him and his family for five years beginning in 2011 as he fought a defamation battle in the courts against the British Medical Journal and journalist Brian Deer. The results of that case – and the self-reflection, pronouncements, and observations of Wakefield, his legal team, wife, and his children – create a complex and incisive look at one of our era’s most fear-provoking and continuously provocative figures. The Pathological Optimist takes no sides, instead letting Wakefield and the battles he fought speak for themselves.
