What happens when we wake up in midlife and realize we've become someone we never intended to be? Award-winning playwright and filmmaker Brooke Berman joins us to explore this profound question through the lens of her debut feature film, "Ramona at Midlife," which recently premiered at Geena Davis' Bentonville Film Festival.Brooke shares her remarkable journey from acclaimed playwright to first-time film director at 52—a rare achievement in an industry where first-time directors are typically men under 35. Her candid reflections on creating an authentic female leadership style reveal the delicate balance between collaboration and direction on set, shooting an entire feature in just 15 days. The conversation takes unexpected turns as we discuss the liberation that comes with midlife awakening. When we were 25 and imagined our future selves at 50, most of us pictured someone who had "done the heavy lifting" and was essentially coasting. Reality proves far more dynamic and challenging, but also more rewarding than we ever anticipated. Most powerful is Brooke's insight about self-acceptance: "If I don't love the person I am right now in my imperfect skin, then what are we talking about?" This revelation, alongside her disciplined approach to self-care through morning rituals of meditation, yoga, and gratitude practices, offers a blueprint for thriving in our fifth decade.Whether you're approaching midlife, navigating its complexities, or looking back on it, Brooke's story will inspire you to embrace your authentic self and recognize that evolution doesn't end at 50—it often accelerates in the most beautiful, unexpected ways.Connect with Brooke. Listen now, and then watch "Ramona at Midlife" on Apple TV, Amazon Prime, or Fandango at Home to continue the conversation about reinvention and self-discovery.Ready to FEARLESSLY FACE all the F WORDS – be inspired and encouraged? Chevonne's not just a filmmaker; she's a trailblazer dedicated to producing films that entertain and enrich lives while promoting strong Christian and moral values. Chevonne O'Shaughnessy Chevonne O'Shaugnessy is the co-founder and president of American Cinema International. She began her career as the President of International sales for PM Entertainment. Her 10 years in the position resulted in the production and sales of over 176 feature films and two successful television series. PM produced and distributed original prime time product for numerous international TV clients and domestic cable networks, with the distinction of being one of the first suppliers of HBO World Premier Movies. PM remains one of few companies amid the competitive world of independent filmmaking that consistently generates high quality Action Adventure feature films. She has also served as the executive producer of numerous films and TV mini-series including the Jack Hunter trilogy, El Dorado, Born to Race, and many more.In 2000, Chevonne founded American Cinema International, along with George Shamieh, with the goal of distributing and producing high quality commercial motion pictures throughout the world. In less than ten years, ACI produced 20 feature films with international sales and domestic prime time broadcasts on USA, SyFy, and HBO Premier.Through her experience in international sales, Chevonne recognized a niche market for inspirational and family-oriented material. In 2008, she co-founded Mission Pictures International with the goal of creating a brand of quality content to best serve that unique market. Within their first year, Mission Pictures successfully acquired more than 12 titles for theatrical and TV release, and quickly achieved their mission to bring positive, inspirational messages back to the global marketplace.Since its inception, MPI has acquired over a hundred films for theatrical, home video and TV release, and has become the international destination for films appealing to the family and faith market. Some of their major feature films include box office hit October Baby, 2012 Emmy nominee The Heart of Christmas, Letters to God, Mighty Macsand more. The company's original production Love Finds You in Sugarcreek released in 2014 became the highest-rated broadcast ever for UP Channel and garnered Movieguide's Epiphany Prize for the year's Best TV Movie. A second film, Love Finds You in Charm, premiered on UP Channel in June 2015. The latest film, Love Finds You in Valentine, premiered Valentine's Day 2016 with the best ratings in the series yet. To date the Love Finds You movies have reached more than nine million viewers. With Chevonne's departure from MPI, she has created ACI INSPIRES with George Shamieh, the newest brand of inspirational entertainment focusing on family films for everyone. She hopes to continue creating and acquiring strong inspirational stories, and plans to expand ACI INSPIRES to become the largest title holder for inspirational content. Their first TV movie, An Uncommon Grace, featuring Jes Macallan, Sean Faris and Kelly McGillis, was released on February 12th, 2017 on the Hallmark Movies and Mysteries Channel. Despite competing with the Grammys on its premiere night, An Uncommon Grace had 1.8 million unduplicated views, marking it the most-watched premiere in the history of Hallmark Movies & Mysteries. ACI Inspires is currently in pre-production for the three-part series with UP TV and also at the same time developing The Girl From Felony Bay with Walden Media, adapted from the best-selling book of the same name.In addition to her corporate responsibilities, Chevonne currently sits on Board of Directors of the Bentonville Film Festival. She also serves on the Board of Directors of her family's I.A. Now, the asterisk there, is you can find cheaper housing in America, but the unique thing about this area is that you get all the benefits of a larger area but with affordable housing. It's really hard to find that sweet balance between having an area where you can have a job, you can live, you can work, you can play all in NWA. But you can't find that anywhere else in America and have that affordable housing aspect to it.” - Phillip Shepard, (11:02)“...to talk about the perks of Bentonville. That's just kind of baked into the cake of being so close to the downtown section, all the events, all the community, all the biking trails, all of the things that go on in Downtown Bentonville. It's fantastic.” - Phillip Shepard, (12:57)“The fact the the Downtown [Bentonville] Area, which is very community focused, in a matter of months, can go from in one weekend, we can do farmers market, we can do a one hundred mile gravel race, we can do a 5k, we can do a Bentonville Film Festival, then an ice skating rink, and there's a Bentonville Bike Fest happening. And it's like how can so much happening in such a small area have such an impact and be done so well…you can leave the downtown square and come back the next day and it's totally different. It's an endless amount of stuff that only happens [in Bentonville].” - Phillip Shepard, (28:44)“From a cultural perspective, there's something for everyone. And the things that Bentonville has been focusing on are things that are core to almost everyone. If you say what's important to a family, I want to have great schools for my kids, check. What's important for people that want to move here, jobs and a career path, check. What's important for people that just want to retire, you have Bella Vista, check. What's important for single people that want to start a new life and get a new community, check. So you can go down the list and [the Greater Bentonville Area] hits so many important things.” - Phillip Shepard, (32:33)

Erica is a fifth-generation Chinese American director based out of Los Angeles. Her film “Americanized” based on her experiences playing high school basketball has taken home 25 awards including Palm Springs International ShortFest, Bentonville Film Festival, and the Oscar-qualifying award at Cinequest. Erica's love for film started at a young age with her love for TV and cartoons blossoming into a curiosity which was nurtured through her school eventually leading her to work at local a local tv station; where she learned cinematography opening her eyes up to the world of film and eventually set her on her path to becoming a music video director. She discusses the challenges she faced as a woman in film school and the film industry and how she overcame those challenges. She talks about how her film about her life stories as a Chinese American now has a place in the industry due to the new found appreciation of Asian American films such as Crazy Rich Asian and The Farewell. More so, the lack of work as a director is what motivated her to be the one moving her career forward and we get to learn a lot more about how she was able to develop this breakthrough film.

Blaire is originally from Southern California but has roots here in Northwest Arkansas. She originally started in music and moved to video and film, where she found her sweet spot of inspiration. Blaire is also excited about being an Asian American Influencer in the creative arts. She hopes to encourage more young Asian Americans to get into the business of creating video, film, and music. We are certainly excited to be able to share her story with our audience, and we look forward to seeing Blaire on the red carpet soon. At least we will be able to say we heard her here first! Music feeds our souls over here on Bitch Talk and it was a joy to watch a documentary that celebrates that magical connection. We had the chance to speak with director/writer/producer Kathleen Ermitage who's film Mixtape Triology: Stories of the Power of Music explores three different musicians and their music - The Indigo Girls, Vijay Iyer, and Talib Kweli and the fans who have been inspired by their art. Kathleen tells us how she went about finding these stories, what she learned from the conversations she had with musicians and their fans and how they challenged her thinking, how she and her team had to creatively film and edit during the pandemic, and how social justice work was weaved into these stories. Mixtape was such an uplifting story of artists and their fans and we think this could be an episodic in the works.
