“And while Thyme has changed a lot over the years and as a place, it has grown and built into something much bigger, the ethos is absolutely the same. It's all about slowing down and connecting to the land. And it's also very much an extension of our home. Those are the two things that give the experience here and the place here a fundamental difference. We want people to come and there's a sense of familiarity and a sense of homeliness.” We're in great company with Caryn and Milly Hibbert, the mother & daughter duo behind Thyme - a collection of restored, historic buildings nestled in the Cotswolds of England, where they took time to make Thyme. A family story where a passion for the land, food and entertaining merges with a love of nature, beauty and conservation. Over the years, the Hibbert family has delicately and diligently brought to life the charm and character that can only be experienced in a “village within a village” - inviting guests to rest and reconnect in the English country idyll that they have the great fortune of calling home. In this final episode of Season 5, we hear the passion present and the laughter linger, as both Caryn and Milly speak to the organic and timeless growth of Thyme and all that is to come - from a family who likes to “color in” their lives with the things they love. Top Takeaways [2:00] Like mother, like daughter, both Caryn and Milly grew up with a love for and respect of nature. Yet it took time away - in different careers, across different cities - before the Cotswolds called them home. [10:25] Thyme, in its humble beginnings with untouched land, rundown buildings and ruined barns, was founded amongst generations of the Hibbert family, on principles meant to keep their sense of place “as pure as possible,” only adding to and never subtracting from the beauty that was innate. [16:40] It has and always will be a family affair at Thyme, with Caryn as the Founder and Creative Director, her daughter Milly by her steadfast side as the General Manager, and her son Charlie as the Head Chef with a heightened attention to all of the senses. [22:40] Today, Thyme is comprised of 31 bedrooms dispersed across its houses and cottages, the Ox Barn restaurant, the Baa Bar, the Swan pub, Cookery School, Meadow Spa, Bertioli Boutiques, and the Tithe Barn event and exhibition space. [24:45] Through a “Calendar of Happenings” the Hibbert's have opened their estate to travelers and locals alike, offering a variety of experiences, classes, workshops and events - from cookery and floristry, to soap making and painting, all under the direction of masterful experts in their field. [32:00] Dining In Good Company with Chef Charlie Hibbert is a sensorial yet simplistic experience as his innovative expertise is “more about what he left off the plate that allows the main ingredients to sing.” [39:25] It only makes sense, given Caryn and Milly's nurturing approach to nature, that they would come together to create Thyme's sister brand Bertioli where they design simple, beautiful products for everyday living, that inspire a connection to the land and nourish both people and planet. There is no novel better than a Plum Sykes novel, and I have mentioned on the show what a fan I am of Plum's work—and of Plum, period, end of story. I have another special fiction pick for you listeners as we're starting to plan summer beach trips and pool days—Plum's latest, Wives Like Us, is an absolute must for your summer TBR. It comes out today, May 14, and I tore through it and wanted more of Ian the butler (you'll hear Plum and I talk about him plenty on the show today). Truly, Plum is one of the ultimate icons of fiction to me. Let's talk about Wives Like Us before we get into getting to know a bit about Plum herself: this book takes us to the Cotswolds, specifically “The Bottoms,” and introduces us to the luxe life there, specifically the life and the concept of “the Country Princess,” which Plum explains in our chat today. Plum lives in the English countryside, so it's a world she knows well. The signature of Plum's novels is that they're so juicy and dishy and high society-focused—upper crust and rich and glamorous. This is her fourth novel, following Bergdorf Blondes, The Debutante Divorcee, and Party Girls Die in Pearls, which came out in 2016, if I'm not mistaken, so it's been a moment since I've gotten my Plum Sykes novel fix. Let me tell you about her, without further ado. First of all, Plum and her twin sister, Lucy, were the “It Girls” in New York City high society, Plum working at Vogue under Anna Wintour and Lucy at Marie Claire, where, actually, I now work. Plum is a fashion journalist, novelist, and socialite and was born in London and educated at Oxford, and remains a contributing editor at Vogue, where she writes about society, fashion, and Hollywood. She has also written for Vanity Fair. I'm a fan of Plum's writing and just Plum as a person, and there's no question that you, too, will fall in love with her after listening to our conversation. The award-winning architect Richard Hawkes is no ordinary designer of buildings. He has made his name and forged a career by creating some of the most astonishing new homes build in Britain in the past two decades. He joins James Fisher on the Country Life Podcast to talk about the homes he designs, many of which are built under the Paragraph 84 rules, which allow the creation of new homes in rural areas where development would otherwise be forbidden.Richard's own house, centred beneath and around a magnificent arch, was featured in a memorable episode of the Channel 4 TV programme Grand Designs, and he talks about how appearing on the programme played its part in building his reputation. He also tells James about the many factors that come in to play with creating such houses in the countryside — and why he regularly turns potential clients away if he feels the land in question is simply too important, ecologically speaking, to build on.The greatest tribute of all? Not a single one of the homes he and his team have built has ever come back on to the market, each one instead still being lived in by the clients for whom he built it in the first place.Episode creditsHost: James FisherGuest: Richard HawkesProducer and Editor: Toby KeelMusic: JuliusH via PixabaySpecial thanks: Adam Wilbourn Hosted on Acast. EPISODE 1876: In this KEEN ON show, Andrew talks to Bulent Atalay, author of BEYOND GENIUS, about how Shakespeare, Da Vinci, Newton, Beethoven and Einstein all shared the same kind of transgressive mindsDescribed by the Washington Post, Smithsonian Magazine, NPR and PBS as a “Modern Renaissance Man,” Bulent Atalay is a scientist, artist and author. After his participation in a scientifically incongruous archaeological expedition to Mt. Ararat in Eastern Turkey — one in which the late astronaut James Irwin was also a member — the Washington Post carried the story, “Indiana Atalay and the Search for the Ark.” With roots in Turkey and England, Atalay now resides in the United States. His grandfather was a Turkish military officer who survived the Battle of Gallipoli in WWI, only to die while fighting against Lawrence of Arabia in 1916. His father was a military officer and diplomat who served as diplomatic courier to European capitals during WWII, and subsequently held successive assignments as military attaché to London, Paris, and Washington. Read "A Tribute to Kemal Atalay." He received his early schooling at Eton in England and St. Andrew's School in Middletown, Delaware, the institution which served as the site of the 1989 Robin Williams film, Dead Poets Society. He went into physics by accident when a secretary in the admissions office at Georgetown University read his intended career as "physicist" instead of "physician," and he stayed in physics when he found he had latent interest in the field. His advanced education includes BS, MS, MA, PhD and postdoctoral studies, completed at Georgetown, Princeton, University of California-Berkeley, and Oxford University. A professor of physics in Virginia now, he has previously been a member of the Department of Theoretical Physics at the University of Oxford, as well as the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, where Einstein spent the last twenty-five years of his life. An accomplished artist, Atalay has presented his works in one-man exhibitions in London and Washington, and his two books of lithographs — Lands of Washington and Oxford and the English Countryside — can be found in the permanent collections of Buckingham Palace, the Smithsonian, and the White House. Ten years after its release by Smithsonian Books in April 2004, his best selling book, Math and the Mona Lisa, has had numerous printings in English, and appeared in thirteen languages. His last book, Leonardo's Universe, coauthored with former student Keith Wamsley, was released by National Geographic Books in 2009, and declared "... one of ten must-have books for the year," by the Britannica Blog writer. It has appeared in English and Japanese. In April, 2019, the National Geographic Society released the book as a "bookazine," abridged to 25,000 words with the title Leonardo da Vinci: Celebrating the Renaissance Man. Atalay's most recent book, Beyond Genius, identifying the common qualities and conditions crucial in producing Leonardo, Shakespeare, Newton, Beethoven, and Einstein,” five "transformative geniuses," who redefined their respective fields, is scheduled for release on November 7, 2023 by Pegasus Books.Named as one of the "100 most connected men" by GQ magazine, Andrew Keen is amongst the world's best known broadcasters and commentators. In addition to presenting KEEN ON, he is the host of the long-running How To Fix Democracy show. He is also the author of four prescient books about digital technology: CULT OF THE AMATEUR, DIGITAL VERTIGO, THE INTERNET IS NOT THE ANSWER and HOW TO FIX THE FUTURE. Andrew lives in San Francisco, is married to Cassandra Knight, Google's VP of Litigation & Discovery, and has two grown children.

After listening to this, you may be either surprised or enlightened to the fact that the Nordic countries are rated highly in various world indexes and are desirable places to live, although maybe not all year round.I have not made up these statistics as they have come from trusted sources.Maybe before you listen, just jot down the countries you think maybe at the #1 position for Happiest Country, Safest Country, Most Freedom, Human Development, Best Places to Live, etc.Good luck.As I lecture about this stuff, I have to be pretty much correct and have this info. backed up fom reliable sources.Personally, I still love the English Countryside.http://www.malcolmteasdale.com

You asked for it! A bonus episode all about making your own film. And who better to ask than the Robert sisters? Sophia and Fiona Robert are two women who write, produce, and star in their own feature films. Their second feature film, A View of the World from Fifth Avenue, just premiered at Bentonville Film Festival (founded by Geena Davis) to a sold out audience. They made this film in just over a year. Their first feature film, The Country Club, played 5 festivals and is available to stream starting today. It also stars Elaine Hendrix (or Meredith from The Parent Trap). Fiona Robert directed both projects. In the interview that comes out this Monday, I ask these incredible women about their career and journey. I took some of their answers about writing and producing a film and compiled this special bonus episode. Robert Sisters Pictures is an award-winning film production company founded in 2018. Created by sisters Fiona and Sophia Robert, the team writes, produces, directs, and stars in their films. The company was founded with the goal of creating inclusive work which strives to uplift both its audience and its team. All Robert Sisters productions aim to have an inclusive and gender-balanced crew behind the scenes, earning their second feature film, A VIEW OF THE WORLD FROM FIFTH AVENUE, the ReFrame stamp of approval. The Robert Sisters' first feature, THE COUNTRY CLUB played five festivals taking home “Best Feature Comedy” upon its premiere at the Manhattan Film Festival and the “Marlyn Mason First Prize“ at Flicker's Rhode Island Film Festival. The film was sold to Good Deed Entertainment for domestic distribution, and Archstone for International Sales. It will be released worldwide June 2023. The Robert Sisters' second feature, A VIEW OF THE WORLD FROM FIFTH AVENUE will world premiere as one of twelve films in Narrative Competition at Bentonville Film Festival June 2023 founded by Geena Davis. Robert Sisters Pictures are gearing up to produce their third feature, a Gosford Park style mystery set in the English Countryside. Today we're heading to the county of Suffolk in Eastern England, otherwise known as the forgotten county. While not a lot of tourists visit this area, it is chock full of beautiful nature reserves and is known for historical ruins and quaint seaside towns. My guest today is Harry Hunt, whose family owns a jewel of a property set on 8,000 acres of preserved nature. Wilderness Reserve is decidedly not a hotel, but rather a collection of historical buildings fully renovated into villas and homes that will invoke the countryside getaway of your dreams. Harry and I talk about everything from fish and chips to gorgeous dinners set up in the forest, to how the family is focused on conserving the land through tourism. Today we're whisking you away to the English Countryside. Specifically The Lake District and the Yorkshire Dales. This region is home to the highest peaks and the deepest lakes, yet it remains a well kept secret that I think more people should visit. In the words local poet of William Wordsworth, “You may leave the Lake District, but once you've been, it'll never leave you.” My guests today are Matt Loveland and Ben Walker who are avid outdoor enthusiasts, fantastic guides, and partners of mine working with Wilderness England. We talk about everything from the famed Coast to Coast hike, to sailing the British Isles, to the local heritage and culture of this region. Before there was Camilla and Charles, there was Camilla and Andrew. She was Camilla Shand, country girl and horse fan, who was a social star in the classroom, finishing school, and the debutante balls of London. He was Andrew Parker Bowles, a young cavalry officer and the most lusted-after gentleman of her deb season. In episode three of Windsors & Losers, hosts Allie & Eva revisit Camilla and Andrew's unconventional and somewhat racy first marriage — and how she ultimately found her way back into the arms of the future King Charles.
Today we're talking to a car collector whose built a business around his passions. George Bamford, founder of Bamford Watch Department has always loved mechanical things from an early age. When the time came to join his family's business, he decided to not rest on his laurels and started his own. George has an amazing collection ranging from Ferraris to Land Rovers and drives them all up and down the country roads, just outside of London. He's got a strict rule with all of his cars, and that's that none of them are show ponies, so he makes sure to drive everything, especially his vintage Ferrari 275 GTB. We talk about design, his newly released watch collaboration with one of his favorite brands, Land Rover, and what it was like growing up around the cars that he's collecting now. We will for sure have him back on to hear more stories, but for now, please enjoy, this is George Bamford, for Collectors Gene Radio.Bamford Watch Department - https://www.bamfordwatchdepartment.com/

Digital Nomads are commonplace these days. 30 years ago it was virtually unheard of. What could be better than running a successful business while being a temporary resident anywhere in the world.Personally, I can think several places that would be attractive to me if I was a Digital Nomad and somewhat younger. To name a few: Thailand, Spain, Malta, Costa Rica, Panama, Caribbean, English Countryside.Listening to Susie's story made me somewhat jealous, however it is inspiring for anyone who may be considering this type of lifestyle. Currently working in the Algarve Region of Portugal ( a much sought after place to live for ex-pats) and previously in Puerto Vallarta in Mexico, she is certainly enjoying the "working" good life to the max,She even spent time in one of my favorite places, Phuket, Thailand.Best wishes to her and her business.https://susiebills.com/https://www.linkedin.com/in/susiebillshttps://www.facebook.com/savvyceolifestylehttps://www.instagram.com/iamsusiebillshttps://www.facebook.com/groups/savvyceosocietyhttps://www.facebook.com/SusieBills831/
Well we lost the original recording for Episode 87: Vampyres. However your fearless hosts connected over the phone to do a fast review of the movie and talk about our Halloween episode coming up next. Trust us, the fact that the full recording of Vampyres was lost is NOT a big deal. It's not the greatest movie and it wasn't our greatest recording. But we felt that we owe it to our fan to get together briefly and at least mention this stellar "masterpiece" from 1974. The story is about 2 Vampires (who are romantically involved women) who pose as hitchhikers in the English Countryside, luring in men to feast on their blood. That's it. That's the movie. But we mainly wanted to let everyone know what we'll be watching for the episode that goes up on Halloween. Spooky Season can be a lot of work, so we decided to take a vacation to the English Countryside! Just gotta make sure we stay on the road, keep clear of the moors, and beware the moon, something our ill fated characters in this iconic horror classic sadly fail to do. Jamie is back on the pod to discuss An American Werewolf in London, a personal favorite for both he and host Spencer, and one of the most influential horror films of the 1980s (and maybe all time). The ultimate boy who cried (were)wolf, this film is packed full of allegories by writer/ director John Landis, as well as some of the greatest makeup effects of all time by Rick Baker. Listen at anytime, but maybe not on the next full moon... just in case.

Did you know that C.S. Lewis & J.R.R. Tolkien were friends and had a writing group called The Inklings. They would meet in Pubs in Oxford and discuss their writings. They also would romp through the English Countryside enjoying nature, traveling from village to village. Charles Dickens suffered from insomnia and as a consequence, would walk the streets of London. These men were literary legends and their writings made all the better by incorporating downtime into their lives. This is the perfect time of year to find time to rest and be quiet, but it's easier said than done. Sophi goes foraging and can now --possibly-- survive a zombie apocalypse, but that's the furthest thing from anyone's mind as she indulges in the luxurious Burleigh Court. There's so much out there. Let's all travel outside the obvious. As seen in Swanky Retreats
We speak to Evan Bowen-Jones, Chief Executive of the Kent Wildlife Trust, about this ambitious rewilding project and the roles it is hoped these Cork-bred bison will play in restoring the natural balance in the woodlands of Kent.

Paula Sutton is the stylist and creator behind Hill House Vintage, where her English-countryside style comes to life through whimsical imagery of her home and garden. Sutton has garnered an audience of over half a million followers on Instagram and has become an author, debuting her first book, Hill House Living: The Art of Creating a Joyful Life, just last year. While Sutton has found her stride in slow-paced, thoughtful content creation, her early career looked quite different. After starting off as a press officer for Elite Premier model agency in London, she worked in fashion PR and as a model agent before landing at Elle, where she was the bookings director. If that sounds like a lot to squeeze in, that's because Sutton was moving at a mile a minute for many years. On this episode of Second Life, find out how Sutton's transition from city living to the countryside actually foreshadowed a synonymous career evolution that led her to build a brand that sparks true joy.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
A campaign to widen access to the English countryside is gathering momentum. However, as Helena Horton reports from a mass trespass event in Devon, there is little sign the government is willing to budge. Help support our independent journalism at theguardian.com/infocus

Melissa Harrison is an award-winning novelist, nature writer and podcaster. Melissa's podcast The Stubborn Light of Things has the same title as her book that was named the Sunday Times Nature Book of the Year. In the book it feels like she's taking us by her side as she walks through the greens of London and the English countryside, sharing warm and poetic observations of the natural world. There's a joy in her lush descriptions, with the magic of frogspawn, seahorses in the Thames, murmurations of starlings, elfin dog violets and more. Melissa's writing is finely observed, musical and intimate and she echoes this in her podcast with her soothing voice and recordings of the fields and birds. Melissa also contributes a monthly nature column to The Times, which the book was based on, and writes for various other publications. Her most recent novel, All Among the Barley, was described by Jon McGregor as “a masterpiece”. Her other novels are Clay and At Hawthorn Time and she's written a non-fiction meditation called Rain: Four Walks in English Weather, and edited four anthologies of the seasons.
