OK, all kidding aside, but “submitted for your approval” as Rod Serling would say, this is the COMPOSERS DATEBOOK for September 30th. I'm John Birge. On today's date in 1960, the second season of “The Twilight Zone,” — the legendary TV series created by Mr. Serling — began airing on CBS. For this, the producers added a new signature theme written by Marius Constant, a Romanian-born French composer. Constant had studied composition with Olivier Messiaen, Arthur Honegger, and Nadia Boulanger and had a very respectable career as a composer and teacher, but he's best known for his brief, but iconic, “Twilight Zone” theme. During its five-season run, that show also employed the talents of other famous composers, including Jerry Goldsmith, Leonard Rosenman, Fred Steiner, and Franz Waxman. And in case you're wondering who wrote the theme for the FIRST season of “The Twilight Zone,” well, that was another famous Hollywood composer by the name of Bernard Herrmann. This week's quiz: On 9 July, I asked you a question about an article and video written and produced by our very own Happy Ollia Horton. It was about Fatmata Binta, who had just won the prestigious 2022 Basque Culinary World Prize, which goes to, as Ollia wrote: “… chefs from around the world who are using their talent and creativity to create positive change.”   Fatmata Binta created the Fulani Kitchen Foundation. As she told Ollia, traveling around to different communities and collecting recipes, she saw the enormous difficulties women faced. So, she created the foundation – she already has four acres of land in northern Ghana - where women can, as Ollia wrote: “… do arts and crafts and grow fonio that will be packaged up and sold back into the community.” Binta plans on using her prize money to further develop her center for women, the Fulani Kitchen Foundation. Fatmata Binta took a while to find her calling, moving around from job to job. Her mother gave her a nickname – and that was your question. What nickname did Fatmata Binta's mother give her?  The answer is: “Touch and leave”.  As Ollia wrote: “Binta admits that it has taken some time to finally settle into her true calling. Her mother fondly nicknamed her “touch and leave” when she was younger because of her tendency to flit from one thing to another. After completing international relations studies, she went to culinary school in Kenya, then spent quite a bit of time dabbling in other jobs in marketing and television, but now she is home at last.” In addition to the quiz question, there was the Bonus Question: What's your comfort food? The COVID Zone vs. Twilight Zone I went to grab the starting few seconds of a Twilight Zone opening, you know the familiar music, to start the episode when what happened next was unexpected.   After listening to the opening with Rod Serling, his words were so poignant and relevant living in COVID today, that it inspired this episode.   Twilight zone: "A dimension of sight.  A dimension of sound.  A dimension of mind.    A place of ideas, imagination, substances, and shadows." Find out why I think we entered the real-life Twilight Zone. I'm not the only one.  I discovered an article written in June 2020 - comparing the new Twilight Zone to the old, and the conclusion is interesting.  Brian Lowry CNN The Old Twilight Zone speaks to the strange times we are living in better than the new one. "Where "The Twilight Zone" historically excelled -- aside from the devilish surprise endings -- hinged on crafting concise morality tales that dealt not only with the apprehensions of the day, but human nature more broadly. That's the most enduring part of Serling's legacy and the one that speaks the loudest to where we are now." `The Twilight Zone' was the brainchild of Emmy Award-winner Rod Serling, who served as host and wrote more than 80 episodes of the original show's 150-plus episode run. It's a strange mix of horror, science-fiction, drama, comedy, and superstition.
