From classical concertos to jazz and rock & roll, from symphonic masterpieces to the most experimental compositions of living composers, Haas has championed, commissioned, unearthed and celebrated music for his instrument, becoming, as Ovation magazine hailed him, "The Paganini of the timpani."His concerts on the world's most prestigious musical stages and his ground-breaking recordings have delighted critics and listeners on both sides of the ocean. The New York Times wrote, "Wherever one finds a percussion instrument waiting to be rubbed, shook, struck or strummed, [Haas] is probably nearby, ready to fulfill his duties with consummate expertise... he is a masterful young percussionist."Most recently, Haas has garnered widespread praise and attention for his performances of Philip Glass' Concerto Fantasy for Two Timpanists and Orchestra, a piece conceived by Haas and completed because of his quest to spotlight the timpani. The Concerto Fantasy features not only two timpanists, but also 14 timpani, all placed downstage in front of the orchestra. In 2000, Haas performed the world premiere of the piece with the American Symphony, and he has subsequently performed it at Carnegie Hall and in Phoenix, New Jersey, Baltimore, Pasadena, Long Beach (California), St. Louis and Mexico City. Haas also performed the European premiere with the BBC Symphony in London, the world premiere of a chamber orchestra version with the Iris Chamber Orchestra in Memphis, the Czechoslovakian premiere with the Prague Symphony Orchestra at the International Music Prague Spring Festival, the Norwegian premiere with the Bergen Philharmonic, and he will perform the Australian premiere with the Sydney Symphony and the Turkish premiere with the Istanbul Philharmonic.Haas' successful efforts to expand the timpani repertoire have led him to commission and premiere more than 25 works by composers in addition to Philip Glass such as Stephen Albert, Marius Constant, Irwin Bazelon, Eric Ewazen, Thomas Hamilton, Robert Hall Lewis, Jean Piche, Karlheinz Stockhausen, Andrew Thomas, and many others.Haas built the world's largest timpani and debuted it in 2003 at the Aspen Music Festival. This unprecendented, incredible instrument -- nearly 6' wide and nearly 4' tall – beats the world's second-largest timpani — a 48-incher used by Amsterdam's Concertgebouw Orchestra — by almost half.Haas' recordings include the trail-blazing 18th Century Concertos for Timpani and Orchestra and Johnny H. and the Prisoners of Swing, both on Sunset Records. The latter was named for his jazz group and features innovative renderings of jazz compositions featuring "hot timpani" in front of a full jazz ensemble. His rediscovery of Duke Ellington's brilliant composition for jazz timpani, "Tympaturbably Blue," is included on this recording, as are other jazz standards played on a set of ten kettledrums.Demonstrating a remarkable versatility as a musician, Haas has performed and recorded with Emerson, Lake and Palmer, played on the Grammy Award-winning recording Zappa's Universe, recorded with Aerosmith, Michael Bolton, Black Sabbath, and explored heavy metal with his rock group Clozshave. The rarest of modern virtuosi, Haas embarked on his career as a solo timpanist by performing the only solo timpani recital ever presented at Carnegie Recital Hall in 1980. As an orchestral soloist, he made his debut with the New York Chamber Orchestra under Maxim Shostakovich and his European solo debut with the Bournemouth Sinfonietta. He made his French debut performing Andrez Panufnick's Concerto for Percussion, Timpani and Orchestra with the Orchestra de la Garde Republicaine. He was the soloist in the Druschetsky Concerto for Eight Timpani, Oboe and Orchestra with the Aspen Chamber Orchestra. He has also performed as a solo timpanist for the Distinguished Artists Recital Series at New York's 92nd Street ‘Y' and as a guest artist with the Lincoln Center Chamber Society, the Chamber Music at the ‘Y' Series, and the Newport Chamber Music Festival. He has championed new music by presenting adventuresome programming such as The Music of Frank Zappa, showcasing the music of Edgar Varese and Frank Zappa, under the auspices of Lincoln Center's Great Performers Series.Haas is the principal timpanist of the New York Chamber Orchestra, the Aspen Chamber Orchestra and EOS Ensemble, principal percussionist of the American Symphony Orchestra, and a member of the American Composers Orchestra. He performs with the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra, Mostly Mozart Festival Orchestra, New York Pops, and New Jersey Symphony and has performed and recorded with the New York Philharmonic, the Stuttgart Chamber Orchestra and the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra.A graduate of Washington University in St. Louis, Haas received his Master's Degree from the Juilliard School as a student of Saul Goodman. An inspiring teacher, he has been the director of the Peabody Conservatory Percussion Studio for twenty years and a faculty artist of the Aspen Music School, and he conducts the percussion ensembles at both schools. He has presented master classes throughout the United States and internationally at the Toho Gauken, Hanoi Conservatory, Paris Conservatory, and the Graz Percussion School. Sharing his enthusiasm for music with young people, he has presented over two hundred concert-demonstrations with his "Drumfire" program, under the auspices of the Lincoln Center Institute, the New York Chamber Symphony's Sidney Wolff Children's Concert Series, and the Aspen Festival Young Person's Concert Series. As active an entrepreneur as he is an artist, Haas heads Sunset Records, Kettles and Company, and Gemini Music Productions which contracts musicians for Lincoln Center, New York Pops, and many other organizations. He also works closely with percussion industry manufacturers Pearl/Adams, Promark and Zildjian, among others.Clayton Craddock founded Broadway Drumming 101, an in-depth online platform offering specialized mentorship and a carefully curated collection of resources tailored for aspiring and professional musicians.Clayton's Broadway and Off-Broadway credits include tick, tick…BOOM!, Altar Boyz, Memphis The Musical, Lady Day at Emerson's Bar and Grill, Ain't Too Proud – The Life and Times of The Temptations, Cats: The Jellicle Ball, and The Hippest Trip: The Soul Train Musical. Synopsis “This highway leads to the shadowy tip of reality: you're on a through-route to the land of the different, the bizarre, the unexplainable... Go as far as you like on this road. Its limits are only those of mind itself. Ladies and Gentlemen, you're entering the wondrous dimension of imagination…” Next stop The DATEBOOK Zone. OK, all kidding aside, but “submitted for your approval” as Rod Serling would say, this is the COMPOSERS DATEBOOK for September 30th. I'm John Birge. On today's date in 1960, the second season of “The Twilight Zone,” — the legendary TV series created by Mr. Serling — began airing on CBS. For this, the producers added a new signature theme written by Marius Constant, a Romanian-born French composer. Constant had studied composition with Olivier Messiaen, Arthur Honegger, and Nadia Boulanger and had a very respectable career as a composer and teacher, but he's best known for his brief, but iconic, “Twilight Zone” theme. During its five-season run, that show also employed the talents of other famous composers, including Jerry Goldsmith, Leonard Rosenman, Fred Steiner, and Franz Waxman. And in case you're wondering who wrote the theme for the FIRST season of “The Twilight Zone,” well, that was another famous Hollywood composer by the name of Bernard Herrmann. Music Played in Today's Program Marius Constant (1925-2004): The Twilight Zone Main Theme (2nd version) –Orchestra; Joel McNeely, cond. (Varese-Sarabande VSD2-6087) Bernard Herrmann (1911-1975): The Twilight Zone Main Theme (1st version) –Orchestra; Joel McNeely, cond. (Varese-Sarabande VSD2-6087)

This week's quiz: On 9 July, I asked you a question about an article and video written and produced by our very own Happy Ollia Horton. It was about Fatmata Binta, who had just won the prestigious 2022 Basque Culinary World Prize, which goes to, as Ollia wrote: “… chefs from around the world who are using their talent and creativity to create positive change.”   Fatmata Binta created the Fulani Kitchen Foundation. As she told Ollia, traveling around to different communities and collecting recipes, she saw the enormous difficulties women faced. So, she created the foundation – she already has four acres of land in northern Ghana - where women can, as Ollia wrote: “… do arts and crafts and grow fonio that will be packaged up and sold back into the community.” Binta plans on using her prize money to further develop her center for women, the Fulani Kitchen Foundation. Fatmata Binta took a while to find her calling, moving around from job to job. Her mother gave her a nickname – and that was your question. What nickname did Fatmata Binta's mother give her?  The answer is: “Touch and leave”.  As Ollia wrote: “Binta admits that it has taken some time to finally settle into her true calling. Her mother fondly nicknamed her “touch and leave” when she was younger because of her tendency to flit from one thing to another. After completing international relations studies, she went to culinary school in Kenya, then spent quite a bit of time dabbling in other jobs in marketing and television, but now she is home at last.” In addition to the quiz question, there was the Bonus Question: What's your comfort food? The winners are: RFI Listeners Club member Yeami Sanday John Turay from Freetown, Sierra Leone, who is also the winner of the Bonus Question. He wrote: “You amazed me because it is the first time you have asked a question about a person in my beautiful home of Sierra Leone. My comfort food, which I would like for you to try one day, is casava leaves and rice.” From the RFI Amour Fan Club in Rajshahi, Bangladesh, Nuraiz is a lucky winner this week, as is Muhammad Saleem Akhtar Chadhar, the president of the RFI Seven Stars Radio Listeners Club in District Chiniot, Pakistan. There's RFI Listeners Club member Arne Timm from Harjumaa, Estonia, and last but certainly not least, RFI English listener Kalyani Basak from West Bengal, India. Congratulations winners! Here's the music you heard on this week's program: The theme from The Twilight Zone by Marius Constant, performed by the Monterey Radio and TV Philharmonic Orchestra; traditional music from Brittany; “Fula Flute” performed by Keme Bourema; “The Flight of the Bumblebee” by Nicolai Rimsky-Korsakov; “The Cakewalk” from Children's Corner by Claude Debussy, performed by the composer, and “Tenor Madness” by Sonny Rollins, performed by the Sonny Rollins Quartet with John Coltrane. The COVID Zone vs. Twilight Zone I went to grab the starting few seconds of a Twilight Zone opening, you know the familiar music, to start the episode when what happened next was unexpected.   After listening to the opening with Rod Serling, his words were so poignant and relevant living in COVID today, that it inspired this episode.   Twilight zone: "A dimension of sight.  A dimension of sound.  A dimension of mind.    A place of ideas, imagination, substances, and shadows." Find out why I think we entered the real-life Twilight Zone. I'm not the only one.  I discovered an article written in June 2020 - comparing the new Twilight Zone to the old, and the conclusion is interesting.  Brian Lowry CNN The Old Twilight Zone speaks to the strange times we are living in better than the new one. "Where "The Twilight Zone" historically excelled -- aside from the devilish surprise endings -- hinged on crafting concise morality tales that dealt not only with the apprehensions of the day, but human nature more broadly. That's the most enduring part of Serling's legacy and the one that speaks the loudest to where we are now." `The Twilight Zone' was the brainchild of Emmy Award-winner Rod Serling, who served as host and wrote more than 80 episodes of the original show's 150-plus episode run. It's a strange mix of horror, science-fiction, drama, comedy, and superstition. Serling introduced each episode, and many of the black and white episodes concluded with a surprise ending. | Actors such as Burt Reynolds, Roddy McDowell, and Robert Redford made appearances in some of the more well-known stories. Travel back in time with us to the very moment of formation of … the Beatles. Why this moment in time? Because it provides fascinating clues about the creation of this song. Join us in our investigation as we discover what in the world a psychological phenomenon known as cryptomnesia, has to do with the creation of Eleanor Rigby. Buckle up, for we are going to visit a very specific graveyard just outside Liverpool where everything will be revealed. Well, almost everything. Between Light and Shadow: A Twilight Zone Podcast

Is this a podcast about a television series, or a podcast ABOUT a podcast about a television series? Craig takes a deep dive into “Blurryman,” the extremely meta season finale of the 2019 Twilight Zone reboot, then takes a shocking left turn partway through that threatens to change podcasting as we know it forever. Okay, that may be a slight exaggeration. Let’s just say this episode is not to be missed.   “Neither Here Nor There (‘Really? Another Revision?’ Revision)” by Twin Loops TWILIGHT ZONE MAIN TITLE AND END THEMES composed by Marius Constant, performed by Marco Beltrami and Brandon Roberts “Halloween (Main Theme)” composed and performed by John Carpenter, from Halloween: The Original Motion Picture Soundtrack (copyright 1983 by Varèse Sarabande Records) Miscellaneous cues from Hangover Square composed and conducted by Bernard Herrmann, from Hangover Square: The Original Motion Picture Soundtrack (copyright 1945 by Twentieth Century Fox Film Corporation) “The Sleeper Car” performed by Thievery Corporation, from the EP .38.45 (A Thievery Number) (copyright 1998 by ESL Music)   The Twilight Zone is a trademark of CBS, Inc. Between Light and Shadow: A Twilight Zone Podcast

Left turn! Host Craig suspends his plan to resume covering the first season of the classic Twilight Zone series to instead dive head-first into the first season of the brand new Twilight Zone series from Jordan Peele. This week he gazes suspiciously at the first two episodes (“The Comedian” and “Nightmare at 30,000 Feet”) and shares his knee-jerk reactions with little preparation or time to truly reflect in a meaningful fashion. Are the new episodes worth checking out? You’ll have to listen to get the full scoop. “Neither Here Nor There (‘Really? You're about to hear two podcasters in a fledgling video store watch a film from 1983, one based on a popular television show ripe with societal commentary. Soon they’ll be transported, as will you, to the fifth dimension. It is a dimension as vast as space and as timeless as infinity. It is the middle ground between light and shadow, between science and superstition. That’s the signpost up ahead — your next stop: Varicon Video!
