Creative and technical part of the post-production process of filmmaking

Tyler and Konnery fly with Ripley and Co. to penal colony Fury-161 to explore the industrial depths of "Alien³"! Together they discuss the shocking opening, David Fincher's constant battle with the studio, multiple versions of the original script, differences in theatrical and Assembly Cut, and so much more in this Double-Y Chromo episode of The Friendchise Podcast! Join Chris and Luke as we discuss the merits of Alien 3. Is it good, is it bad? Why does David Fincher hate it? Is the Assembly Cut the definitive version? We get into all of that and much more.
We continue the our mini-series Extended Edition by looking at the Assembly Cut of Alien³. After a complicated pre-production and an even more troubled production plagued by studio interference David Fincher disowned his first film. However the Assembly Cut, complied years later brought to light a version closer to his original vision that served as a powerful conclusion to the original Alien trilogy. It's our second week of director rankings, as we take a look at David Fincher's career. Brad Garoon and Jake Ziegler go all the way back to his first feature, Alien 3 (1992) and talk about his career beginnings through the lens of the Assembly Cut of the film. They rank each movie, right up to the resent thriller the Killer (2023). Other movies discussed in this episode: Seven (1995), the Game (1997), Fight Club (1999), Panic Room (2002), Zodiac (2007), the Curious Case of Benjamin Button (2008), the Social Network (2010), the Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (2011), Gone Girl (2014), Mank (2020).
This week Ryan flys solo (for the first time in the history of the podcast) to analyze the “assembly cut” of Scream 3. Recently, Scream-Trillogy.com made the October 1999 “assembly cut” of Scream 3 available to fans, with more than 30 minutes of extra, unseen footage of the the third film in the franchise. Included in this version is “ground zero” of all the scenes filmed by Wes Craven before the editing process began and the final film was shaped. Ryan analyzes the assembly cut and provides commentary into why things were rightfully cut from the theatrical film and which scenes should have been included in the final product. In this Fanbase Feature, The Fanbase Weekly co-host Bryant Dillon and special guests Charles de Lauzirika (Filmmaker & DVD/Blu-ray producer - Assembly Cut restoration of Alien 3, Final Cut restoration of Blade Runner), Madeline Weber (BFA in Animation and minors in Art History and Philosophy), and Phillip Kelly (Fanbase Press Contributor, The POPSKL Podcast Group) participate in a thorough discussion regarding Star Wars: Episode VI - Return of the Jedi (1983) in light of the film's 40th anniversary, with topics including the film's standout moments, whether Han Solo's death would have made a stronger film, if Darth Vader is truly redeemed by his final sacrifice, and more. (Beware: SPOILERS for Star Wars: Episode VI - Return of the Jedi abound in this panel discussion!)
Alien 3 is a massive disappointment. After the insane action masterpiece that was Aliens, expectations were high for how Ellen Ripley's story would progress. Sadly, Fox, the studio behind the beloved franchise, didn't seem to have any ideas. Multiple scripts came and went, as did directors. Ultimately, the project fell to David Fincher. If you told that to someone now, the excitement would be palpable. But this was 1992, and Fincher had yet to direct a movie. Renowned for his music video work, the first-time director had to fight tooth and nail with the studio throughout the shoot. With a script that was being rewritten on the fly, much of the problems that plague Alien 3 cannot be attributed to him. This is a cautionary tale about wanting to exploit a valuable IP without taking the time to make sure the ideas are worth exploring. Literally, Alien 3 is just Alien in a different setting with a sterile cast of characters who all look and behave the same. That is the opposite of what fans expected after James Cameron blew their Xenomorph-loving minds with Aliens. Hence, why Alien 3 suffered with critics and fell to its death at the box office. On a production budget more than triple its predecessor, it grossed $30 million less domestically. Those kind of numbers are liable to make something burst out of a greedy executive's chest. Now, sit back, kill your mouth lice with a Cosmic Crown from Cigar City Brewing, and reanimate Bishop for some key exposition! I, the Thunderous Wizard (@WriterTLK), Chumpzilla, Capt. Cash, and Bling Blake are setting Xenomorph traps in the dank bowels of Fiorina 161! This Week's Segments: Introduction/Plot Breakdown – Start running...again. The bitch is back! It's time we venture to 1992 where first time director David Fincher became involved in one of the messiest productions of his career, that production being Alien 3. Alien In Review returns to tackle the third installment of the series that inspired Metroid: the much maligned Alien³. Directed by David Fincher, Alien³ places Ripley against a single Xenomorph on the abandoned prison on planet Fiorina. Andy and Gooey Fame go over the troubled development of the film, what we thought of the movies big twist at the beginning, how the reveal at the ending was handled, the differences between the much-better Assembly Cut (or extended cut, which they watched) versus the theatrical release, and how Alien³ wanders back into horror-movie territory, but phycological horror! Buckle in for a long one, cause there is ton to talk about! Alien In Review will return in 2023 to continue the saga! On this episode of Fly By Films, we gush on the power and the glory of Jennifer Connelly ̶(̶a̶n̶d̶ ̶W̶i̶l̶l̶i̶a̶m̶ ̶H̶u̶r̶t̶)̶ and how much Jamison despises—AND I MEAN DESPISES—the band Genesis. We do a little looking forward in the podcast's future to see what might become our Oasis moment. We spend a surprising amount of time talking about music and Blake's weird infatuation with hauntology. Then we turn our attention to 1998's Dark City by Alex Proyas and what it has to say about humanity and memory. Is it possible to be human without true memories? Is the ending to the film bleak? Is Nathan Fielder the devil (or at least a Stranger)? You might find the answers to all of these and more on this episode, but probably not. We're watching the Assembly Cut (an extra 30 minutes!) of Alien3 for our latest foray into the Alien franchise. This one takes place on a forced-labor penal colony inhabited by a strange religious sect of hyper-violent, hyper-male murderers, rapists, and scoundrels. But Ripley's not worried because Charles Dance, who's not at all creepy, is there. We struggle to make some kind of synthetic sense of this film, which has an extremely circuitous production history (which we discuss) making for a confusing but nevertheless fun viewing experience, and an even more fun talking experience. Never mind the names of the characters: they all look alike except for Charles S. Dutton and Ripley. One probably smells like garlic but he can't help it, and besides he's crazy. Tony, Johanna, and Joe from Movie Dumpster get together for the long awaited review of Alien 3's Assembly Cut! Released in 2003 the cut inserts important characters moments and entire sequences that were deleted. It even has a few alternate versions of scenes. Charles De Lauzirika is the Restoration Producer of the Alien 3 Assembly Cut, as well as the director of Wreckage and Rage, the definitive behind-the-scenes account of Alien 3 (which you may have seen, in various forms, on both the Quadrilogy and Anthology boxsets). Jaime, Patrick, and Christian had the immense pleasure of learning the inside story of the Assembly Cut from the guy who actually put it together, and we're thrilled to share this exclusive experience with our listeners. On this "very special" episode, Mike and Trevor briefly ((maybe not so briefly)) discuss their thoughts and opinions on the latest Batman release, including the different cuts we may or may not have seen. Please keep in mind the now-famous "joker deleted scene" had not been released to the general public.
We're now half-way through the rocky road that is the Alien franchise, as we sit down to review the third film. Once again following directly from the events of its predecessor, the story begins with Ripley crash landing on a prison planet, with her mates from Aliens being killed in the process. After being rescued, she and the other prisoners have to take on a Xenomorph running loose on a murder spree. That's pretty much all that happens until the final ten minutes, at least in the theatrical version. This was the directorial debut of the legendary friend of the show, David Fincher. But his original vision for the movie was so heavily tampered with by Twentieth Century Fox that an "Assembly Cut" was released a decade later, which more closely resembles the film Fincher wanted to make. So let's try and compare the two versions and discuss the bewildering creation of this picture.

A controversial film upon its release due to its jettisoning of Hicks and Newt, the first film by one of today's most revered director, David Fincher has since gained a cult following, though Fincher disowns the project. Throw in the expanded ‘Assembly Cut' that allegedly represents Fincher's intended experience as closely as possible, has that cult status been obtained? On this episode of the Gore N More podcast we discuss and review the assembly cut of 1992's Alien 3.
In this episode of the show we are (prematurely) celebrating Alien Day by talking about David Fincher’s directorial debut, Alien 3. We leave no stone unturned as we delve into the intricacies of the film’s production, controversies surrounding the evolution of Ellen Ripley’s character, as well as the way the 2003 Assembly Cut attempted to rectify some of its flaws. As an added bonus, we also talk about David Twohy’s Pitch Black, a low budget science-fiction movie that perhaps owes more to the Alien series than one could care to admit; however, some of us may see this claim as slightly provocative! Tune in and enjoy! This week we continue our look at the Alien franchise with a movie that many people love to hate, Alien 3. But is this troubled third entry really as bad as people say? This is rumour control and here are the facts.
Our month of 3s comes to a close with David Fincher's Alien 3 (1992), which may take the prize for most convoluted production history. Here to help us make sense of the Assembly Cut (not the theatrical cut) is returning guest Sade Sellers (see previous episode Orphan), who has issues with the film's treatment of Ripley (Sigourney Weaver) and sexual assault (content warning!)Plus: our secret connections to the number three, the xenomorph as drag queen, the differences between the theatrical and assembly cuts and Charles S. Dutton as a sacrificial lamb. Also: Joe's love of Charles Dance, confusion over "womb stuff" and why Fincher needs to get over his hatred of his directorial debut.References:Anat Zanger. Okay, so this isn't technically a traditional Franchise Wars episode, but hey, we all like change right? In today's instalment we take a look at and discuss the differences between the original 1992 Theatrical Cut and the 2003 Assembly Cut of ALIEN 3, included in the still-perfect Alien Quadrilogy boxset. We look at the film in general as well as give our opinions on which cut we prefer. Spoilers for various films.
Alien 3 - "It was a Dragon, it feeds on minds! Nobody can stop it."
In space, no one can hear the gang scream this week, as they review Alien 3 (1992) directed by David Fincher. This divisive third in the original Alien trilogy is looked down upon by some lovers of the Alien franchise, while others think it could be the best in the series. Tyler, Joseph and Pete dive into the differences between the theatrical cut, and the Assembly Cut, which has more than 40 minutes added to it. With some hard hitting acting from Sigourney Weaver, Charles S. Dutton, Holt McCallany, Danny Webb, Ralph Brown, Brian Glover, and Pete Postlethwaite... this sci fi horror mainstay brings some of the most iconic imagery of the Alien universe, at the very least. Theatrical cut streaking now on HBO Max. 097 - Alien3 Which version of Alien3 did we review, you ask? The Theatrical Version or the Assembly Cut? The short answer is; both. See if you can figure out when it starts to dawn on Travis and Patrick that two versions of this film exist. All that aside, we reviewed Alien3, and found it to be undeserving of its bad reputation. Watch one of the versions of it yourself, and let us know what you think. Please take a moment to rate us on iTunes and share the show! This week we’re joined by screenplay writers Ossian Ritchie and Mass Roman to discuss parasites in movies. We start with low-budget psychotropic addiction parable Brain Damage (1988) and its charming animatronic Elmer. Next up is the 2003 Assembly Cut of David Fincher’s first feature Alien³ (1992) and its shiny CGI whippet-alien. Finally we have Alex Proyas’ mind-bending neo-noir Dark City (1998) and its bald corpses filled with squiggly blue lights. Also: Black Shore (2019). Video rental nasties. Basket Case (1982). Society (1989). Denis Beauvais. Too Many Cooks. Psycho-sexual imagery. Withnail & I, in Space! Event Horizon (1997). Patrick Tatopoulos. House of Cards (1990). Flat-earthers might be right? "When they first heard about this thing, it was 'Crew Expendable'. The next time, they sent in marines. They were expendable too. What makes you think they're gonna care about a bunch of lifers who found God at the ass-end of space?" The third time may not be a charm for the Alien anthology, movie lovers, but it turns out to be a better film than many people gave it credit for back in 1992. Join us -- Pete Wright and Andy Nelson -- this week on Rash Pixel's "Movies We Like" as we talk about David Fincher's first film, Alien 3 (also conveniently and belatedly finishing up our Benjamin Button-style Fincher Fest). In this episode, we talk about what we thought of the film back then versus what we think now. We chat about the immense script and production problems this film went through all along its journey to theaters, and also talk about what was cut out and eventually put back into the 2003 Assembly Cut. We talk about the troubles David Fincher had, yet contrast that with what he was still able to get up on screen. We hash through the special effects, discussing how great they were back then but how they certainly haven't aged well. We touch on the fantastic cast and debate whether there was enough new story for the Ripley character to play out in this or if she'd already run her course. We talk about the budget and how, even with all of its immense overages, the film still managed to rake in a healthy chunk of dough. We touch on Elliot Goldenthal's music, creating a haunting, eerie score that fits the film well. And are you curious as to what Meryl Streep's connection is to this film, movie lovers? Listen in to find out!
