In this episode, we are honored to host Jesse Schein, a revered yoga teacher with 25 years of experience in both practicing and teaching yoga. Jesse's journey includes completing her teacher training under renowned instructors Maty Ezraty, Lisa Walford, and Chuck Miller at YogaWorks. She has led numerous 200-hour and 300-hour teacher trainings, workshops, and international retreats, and has even starred in the reality TV show "Yoga Girls." Described by L.A. Yoga as "hilarious, honest, straightforward, witty, intelligent, and deeply passionate about yoga," Jesse is known for embracing the complete practice of yoga—not just the asana. Her teaching philosophy centers on making yoga accessible to everyone, adapting the practice to individual needs, and creating an environment of curiosity, presence, exploration, effort, and joy. Inspired by Maty Ezraty's wisdom, Jesse believes, “The Yoga poses never change, you do. Thus, your relationship with the poses and the practice changes.” Her motto, "Do You, Be You," encourages authenticity and individual expression in practice, allowing each student to find their unique path in yoga. Before we get to the interview, a message from Anne:‘Hosting this podcast and interviewing all these amazing people has been such an enriching experience, and I had no idea the impact it would have on me and my listeners. With every conversation, I feel changed by my guests' stories. Because it is stories that stay with us, that and how people made us feel.' On that note, dear listener, can you please do me a favour? If you enjoy Out of the Clouds, please rate and review the show on Apple Podcasts or Spotify. It helps make it stand out and will support booking of upcoming guests.'Episode NotesKnown in the yoga world as THE teachers' teacher, Annie Carpenter (@anniecarpentersmartflow) shares her story with Anne, who has been an avid student, first via online platform Glo.com, before attending live Zoom classes and IRL workshops with her in 2022. Annie's journey starts in Virginia, but she tells Anne how she found her path early on with dance, leading her to the Martha Graham company and New York City. From getting a scholarship to working at the junior company and briefly joining the main company, Annie found a calling in what she refers to as authentic self-movement and in teaching at the Martha Graham Center. An introvert, she shares with Anne how yoga became an essential part of her life, thanks to Integral yoga (Swami Satchidananda's school) which felt like a refuge from the competitiveness of the dance world.Annie explains how after a trip to LA and a conversation with her teacher Maty Ezraty, she impulsively relocated to the West Coast and turned to teaching yoga full time, training at Yoga Works under Maty and Lisa Walford. They go on to talk about teaching, about Annie's movement principles and energy, how to create inspiration for students, and why Annie founded her own yoga school, Smart Flow Yoga. Annie also shares why continuing to evolve is essential, as well as learning to let go of preconceived notions. She explains how she has learnt to tap into her students' expectations rather than relying on her own. Now based in Northern California, the teacher, who turned 65 this year, also talks about the stages of life, or ashrams, and she is learning to ‘retire' whatever is not supportive in her practice. Quoting Noam Chomsky, she says: "If you are teaching today what you were teaching five years ago, either your field is dead, or you are.” Annie also reveals her passion for bird-watching, her mindfulness and pranayama practices, and how learning to be still was the doorway to her meditation practice. Finally, she answers the most delicate and profound question of all, one that Annie regularly asks her students: who is Annie? A joyous, profoundly thoughtful and inspiring interview. Scott Johnson talks to Sarah Powers, a long term teacher of yoga and Buddha Dharma, about her life of contemplative practice and its culmination in her new book 'Lit From Within'. We'd like to invite you to join our growing monthly Stillpoint Yoga community. We teach in-person in London Bridge and live stream online Ashtanga Yoga assisted self practice and guided classes, with weekly yoga clinics and philosophy sessions guided by Scott Johnson and the Stillpoint teaching faculty. We also have a growing library of on-demand content. It's a beautiful way to navigate these times… Also, consider joining our Patreon community. We share these podcasts every 2 weeks and would love your feedback, input and support. You can even join a monthly live call to share your thoughts. Sarah Powers is an author, therapist and co-founder of Insight Yoga Institute. Her work is led by a desire for healing, and over the past 35 years Sarah has explored a number of healing modalities. Her yoga practise began with Ashtanga in the company of Chuck Miller, Maty Ezraty, Tim Miller, and Richard Freeman. There she found a daily ritual, an invitation to explore what changes on the inside, when on the surface things might look the same. In this rich and generous conversation, Sarah shares how a profound experience she had while on retreat with Jack Kornfield deeply impacted her life. She'd been a yoga practitioner for over a decade at that point, but this was the time that it first truly made sense to her. Her previous practise served as a preparation for the Buddhist teachings she encountered. She studied both Theravada and Dzogchen, and saw comparisons with her previous studies in Advaita Vedanta. Sarah believes that underlying the multiplicity of teachers and traditions, they would all agree on the fundamental nature of freedom. Over time, Sarah moved away from teaching Ashtanga yoga and towards a more Yin based approach, but the essence of inquiry that she first found in Ashtanga remains. Now, she combines yoga with mindfulness meditation in her classes, integrating yoga and Buddha Dharma with the intention of introducing beginners to meditation. She is the author of Insight Yoga and her most recent book Lit from Within takes a holistic approach to healing our five experiential centres: the physical, energetic, mental, emotional, and interpersonal realms. You can find out more about Sarah's work here. "This conversation with Sarah is so, so rich. I had wanted to speak to Sarah for a while, for her to expand on her beautiful view and experience on how the Buddha Dharma and yoga traditions blend together. I got so much and more. Sarah's wonderful and insightful way of seeing these practices and then sharing them is visceral and compelling. This conversation will leave you feeling like you've stepped right into the middle of Sarah's world. Full, inviting and so, so rich..." Welcome to the Keen on Yoga Podcast with Angela Jamison. Angela is the founder and director of Ashtanga Yoga Ann Arbor, located in Michigan, USA. She grew up on an isolated farm / intentional community in rural Montana, a remote mountain area of the northern US. From there, she was lucky to receive a scholarship to attend college to study Philosophy and Journalism in Oregon. In the year 2000 Angela discovered ashtanga in Seattle. The primary series helped her to heal from severe intestinal parasites acquired while living in Central America. In 2001 she moved to Los Angeles to attend grad school at UCLA. Soon afterwards she was hit by a car in a crosswalk. This near fatal accident resulted in a day of full body paralysis. Subsequently her commitment to ashtanga to heal from that trauma was firmed. She spent the rest of her 20s studying two very different topics with equal intensity – the sociology of American empire, and the practice of ashtanga yoga. It was a wonderful time and place for ashtanga. Of the many practitioners and teachers who helped her, the strongest influences were Maty Ezraty and Chuck Miller. In addition, their student Heather, now Radha Carlisi. However, Dominic Corigliano is the teacher who most impacted her during that time. He taught her to assist him in 2007. Mysore In 2009, Angela moved to Ann Arbor for a visiting assistant professor position at the university there. In the same year she travelled to Mysore for the first time to study with R Sharath Jois. After strong encouragement from him, she finally left the university and started teaching yoga full time in 2011. She spent her 30s slowly building community and teaching, with 2-4 months each year in India studying the yoga tradition. Sharath gave her his blessing as a certified teacher in 2017. The best preparation she had for directing a shala was working a variety of jobs. Including union organizing, waiting tables, administrative positions at Amnesty International and a library, and teaching undergraduates at UCLA. This background led her to see her work both as directing a school – just as our teachers in India model – and also as a form of community building. Growing up “off the grid” surrounded by survivalists has shaped her idea that ashtanga can be a key resource during times of social upheaval. This is because it helps us cultivate both robust physical health, and robust communities. Thereby allowing us to learn complex forms of empathy and cooperation, which help us in difficult times. Online Covid Impact During Covid, her work has mostly migrated online – to a digital platform students built to facilitate ongoing connection and learning. Dozens of students from the early years of the her work have found their way back to what they call the shadowshala. In addition, new people have found it too. The chance to re-connect with early students who now live around the world, and see people learn to sustain a home practice in the midst of great challenges, has been extremely meaningful. But she is eager to return to the sort of real-live practice that can only happen in a Mysore room with everyone breathing and moving together. You can find out more about Angela on her website.
The full episode with video and transcript is available at http://bit.ly/yoga-walford. Lisa Walford is an extraordinary yoga teacher who holds a Level III Iyengar teaching certificate and has been teaching yoga in Los Angeles since 1982. She studies annually with the Iyengars and teaches worldwide. She was a co-creator of the YogaWorks teacher training program that started in 1990 with Maty Ezraty and Chuck Miller. Join us as she shares more about the power of breath through pranayama.
I’m injured…. again. Yoga isn’t feeling good in my body (at least flow yoga anyway). I have a little bit of blame on ZOOM, but I do take full responsibility for my current injuries. It’s my own dang fault for not learning when to take a break. I often preach to students that you can make the practice yours by adjusting the intensity and I have never really thought about making that choice in my teaching practice. Why not give myself permission and lead by example? I feel like my injury came at the right time since I’m in an online teacher training that’s a bit slower than my normal vinyasa-based flow stuff and it’s slowing me down. Forcing me to pay attention.Dani Ibarra is one of those humans I call a COVID blessing. She’s one of the main teachers in a teacher training program that I am a part of right now. She’s a seasoned teacher who studied with someone whom I have always admired over my yoga career, Maty Ezraty. David Williams has been practicing yoga daily, without interruption, since 1971. In 1972 while he was at Dr. Swami Gitananda's Ananda Ashram in Pondicherry, South India, he met Manju, the son of K. Pattabhi Jois, and saw him demonstrate the Ashtanga Yoga Primary series. In 1973, he began learning Ashtanga Yoga from K. Pattabhi Jois at his home in Mysore, India. David was one of the first non-Indian students to be taught the complete Ashtanga Yoga system of asanas and pranayama directly from Jois and became one of the first to be certified to teach the Ashtanga Yoga asanas. He was also one of the very few people ever certified by Jois to teach the Ashtanga Yoga pranayama. In 1975 David, along with Nancy Gilgoff organized and sponsored Pattabhi Jois and Manju’s first visit to Encinitas, California and introduced them to America and the western world. David is responsible for teaching the Ashtanga Yoga system to many of the world’s leading teachers and practitioners, including David Swenson, Doug Swenson, Danny Paradise, Cliff Barber, Batiste Marceau, Bryan Kest, Jonny Kest, Clifford Sweatte, Tracy Rich, Chuck Miller, Maty Ezraty, Kathy Cooper, and Andrew Eppler. David is 65 years old. He is a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He has lived on the island of Maui, Hawaii, since l976. His book My Search For Yoga was 10 years in the making and is his story as a yoga detective from the age of 20. Focusing on the years between 1970 and 1977 throughout Europe, two overland trips to India, and the early days in the Carolinas, Florida, California, and Maui. It includes crazy stories that he has shared in his classes over the years. and highlights the characters who were a part of his journey. The book contains 132 rare color images including photos, original documents of the Ashtanga syllabus and 12 letters from Pattabhi Jois.
How does who we are and where we come from live in our bodies and in our yoga? What does the story of how and where we move tell us about who we can be? Maria and Chara speak with cultural anthropologist and yoga and meditation instructor Alma Duran to explore the landscape of the intersection of yoga and cultures and how they uniquely inform the way we carry our past, present and future in the moment and in life.Highlights:“I didn’t come to yoga because there was something wrong with me. I came to yoga because I saw happy people.”“We carry the story of our culture in our bodies.”“My yoga training and my mindfulness training have helped me enormously to deal with uncertainty and know that it is okay”"The price that I have had to pay was to disintegrate my previous lives. I had to shed my skin as a snake does when it grows……It has been a process of simplifying, deeply simplifying my external life and of letting go of a lot."Resources & Mentions:Viniyoga: https://viniyoga.com/Gary Kraftsow “We practice yoga because it prepares us for death.”Maty Ezraty: https://matyezraty.com/Fred L Miller; http://fredlmiller.com/Meet_Fred.htmlSivananda yoga: https://sivananda.org/Larry Payne: Yoga Rx:on J Brown’s Podcast: https://www.jbrownyoga.com/yoga-talks-podcast/2018/9/larry-payneOn Yoga International: https://yogainternational.com/profile/larry-payneDesikachar: The Heart of Yoga https://www.google.com.au/books/edition/The_Heart_of_Yoga/vV0oDwAAQBAJ?hl=en&gbpv=1&printsec=frontcoverDave Charlton and Ranju Roy: our interview https://www.blissbodyandsoul.com/podcast/“Ishvara pranidhana: faith that the universe is supporting you”Emma Balnaves: our conversation https://www.blissbodyandsoul.com/podcast/
In this episode we are talking to Anne, full time yoga teacher and mindfulness teacher. For her Yoga is all about creating space, your own Bubble, it is a tool to open us up and reconnect emotionally, physically, mentally. It doesn't matter why you come to a yoga, or what takes you there.Trying to persuade anyone to do yoga is not the path to yoga, the benefits of yoga can be googled, but at the end it is all about the experience. If someone comes to studio to do work out, do split or simply create space, it doesnt matter, whatever brings you to the room first time, we trust something else will happen. The magic of yoga will arrive.Almost every time you just get onto mat, it is a way to check in, to realise the impermanence of things. We talk, why yoga, what has changed in terms of the yoga industry, how do yoga teachers keep their cap full, that it doesnt matter where you do yoga.About Anne in her own words:I am here to help you create more space for yourself;Through Yoga to bring movement to your body & reconnect to your breath;Through Mindfulness to quiet the mind & find more balance to navigate the real world;Through Community to create meaningful connections & empower each other to grow. Born & raised in France, I started to practice yoga in 2011 in the middle of an always-on-the-go marketing corporate life. This encounter rapidly turned into a love story, an essential part of my lifestyle, a place of constant exploration & inspiration! Realising how much clarity & truth yoga brought to my life – and as ‘love is the only thing that grows when shared’ (A. de St-Exupéry) – I decided to step out of my corporate role & share what I know & am passionate about with others.Since 2015, you’ll find me teaching Yoga & Mindfulness in studios rooms, business offices, schools & universities or private living spaces, besides running my own studio 'Bubble Yoga' in St. Gallen, Switzerland.I aim to inspire my students to believe in their own capacity to grow & know themselves. I encourage them to be grateful for their successes and playful with their challenges. I offer a safe space for them to practice free of judgement or competition, to connect to themselves & others. I believe in & commit to Yoga for All.She completed my 200H Hatha Teacher Training at Sanapurna Ayurveda & Yoga in Zürich under the guidance of Poonam Stecher Sharma, Sanjeev Banot & Mélanie Huser along with a team of talented teachers. Over the years she has also been fortunate to attend trainings with Mark Stephens, Simon Park or Maty Ezraty among others. In 2016 I completed a Prana Vinyasa Teacher Training immersion with Shiva Rea.About Our Host: Lucia Hargasova is a Leadership and Life Coach. Todd James and Matt Hall talk shop about the most read stories in the Santa Monica Daily Press for 2019. The most read story of the year was an obituary written by Tatiana Blackington James about the founder of Yogaworks passing while in Japan. https://www.smdp.com/yogaworks-founder-dies-while-in-japan/177356Some other stories that got lots of readership was the Target and Tesla opening stories written by Madeleine Pauker.https://www.smdp.com/target-and-tesla-announce-santa-monica-locations/172417Breaking news and crime watch do very well, as does feature stories about local businesses. City Council coverage does not do well, but restaurant opening and closings do particularly well.

Something I've been noticing on the podcast lately is I'm talking less with guests about what they do and more about how they're doing and what they're up to in life overall. Today's conversation felt like one of those. My guest, Kathryn Budig is an internationally celebrated yoga teacher and author known for her accessibility, humor, and ability to empower her students through her message, "aim true." Her big truth was about finding happiness within the pursuit of success. From there we discussed a variety of ways the pursuit of success makes us unhappy. From pursuing things because we think we "should" to the ways we use social media, seek validation and other forms of self-compromise. We talked about sustaining ourselves vs pushing or hustling and we also explored feeling comfortable in our skin as our bodies change and we go through difference phases, her experience of coming out in a relationship with a woman after her divorce from her husband. To say this one is packed and juicy is an understatement. Enjoy! About Kathryn Budig: Kathryn Budig is an internationally celebrated yoga teacher and author known for her accessibility, humor, and ability to empower her students through her message, “aim true.” The Kansas native graduated from the University of Virginia with a double degree in English and Drama before moving to Los Angeles, where she trained at Yogaworks under the tutelage of her mentors, Maty Ezraty and Chuck Miller. With over a decade of experience in her field, Budig served as the yoga editor to Women’s Health magazine for five years, contributed recipes and sat on the Yahoo Health Advisory Board, and regularly contributes to Yoga Journal, The New Potato, and MindBodyGreen. She was an athlete in Under Armour’s “I WILL WHAT I WANT” campaign, the co-host of the Free Cookies podcast, teaches regular online classes on Yogaglo.com, and is the founder of her animal project, Poses for Paws. She is the creator of the Aim True Yoga DVD produced by Gaiam, author of The Women's Health Big Book of Yoga and Aim True. Kathryn Budig is arguably one of the world's most famous yoga teachers. With an Instagram following of 219,000 (and counting), a past in Hollywood, background in acting, and a conventional "yoga bod," she was driven to disprove the stereotype that often comes with being young, blonde and beautiful. She set out to show the world that her teachings were substantial, spiritual, and meaningful. And she did. In this episode, mindbodygreen's CEO Jason Wachob touches on all the key milestones in Budig's life—the good, the bad, and the ugly. Budig, who is as relatable and authentic as they come even with all her acclaim, did her initial yoga teacher training in LA with Maty Ezraty and Chuck Miller, owners of Yoga Works, and subsequently studied with visionaries such as Seane Corn, who are credited with tastefully shaping yoga practice into the modern Western version we know and love today. After committing to teach yoga full time and moving on from her dream of acting, Budig was ready to leave LA and travel through central Florida for a brief interlude before plopping down in Charleston, South Carolina where she married her now ex-husband. Going through her marriage and divorce in the very public venue of social media left her struggling with anxiety and vertigo, but also fueled a newfound personal and spiritual practice that inspired her book, Aim True. Budig has since started her own wellness and sports podcast with her girlfriend Kate Fagan called Free Cookies, has become a budding public speaker, and has started working on book No. 3 as well as a comedy-based show. W-a-nderful welcome to episode #15 of DOUGIT - the podcast - with Jonnie Halstead. Jonnie and his wife Jacque are the Australasian business partners of Wanderlust worldwide. A formidable duo who combine their big smiles, passion for food, yoga, music and community to bring one of the most fabulous festivals down under to New Zealand and Australia. To Wanderlust is to have a strong desire to travel. To go to a Wanderlust Festival is to experience an all-out celebrations of mindful living with a diverse range of world class yoga and meditation teachers to musicians, speakers chefs and everything in between, including three of my favourite activities, slack lining, massage circles and meeting beautiful people. Was privileged to attend Wanderlust last Waitangi weekend in Taupo and track Jonnie down over a beer by a pool in the sun following the final act of the festival, the mindfull and magnificent musician Xavier Rudd. Jonnie and Jacque are an amazing formidable duo who practice what they preach - balancing out family, a transient/wanderlust lifestyle, and long days and nights of work to bring one the greatest festivals/experiences in the world down under. In this conversation we cover off what it means to be an Eco Warrior inspired by the likes of Patogonia, the vision for the festival, how Jonnie and Jacque got started with Wanderlust, and highlights of this years Taupo festival which were many. For me the teachings of Maty Ezraty's, the music of Xzavier Rudd, the diverse loving community of attendees and natural hot springs in the area combined for my most enjoyable festival experience to date, full stop, full of Organic Mechanic Kombucha, slacking off on the slackline, free massages and new yoga moves to sweet grooves. I hope you enjoy the conversation as much as I did. And I hope you can enjoy a Wanderlust festival as much as I did. If you enjoyed the chat, would love to hear from you, a share, comment, text (if you got my digits :) a high five on the street would be much appreciated. And if you need a hand with anything, feel free to get in touch.
