DC attorney Katlin McKelvie on forming MOCRA in the Senate and the 'black box' deadline coming next from FDA

In December, America's first big move to regulate the beauty industry in more than 80 years went into effect with the Modernization of Cosmetics Regulatory Act of 2022, best known as MoCRA. But it isn't until the end of this month that the industry will meet its first big deadline from the Food & Drug Administration.  By July 1, brands and manufacturers must provide a list of their products and where they were made to the FDA through its online portal called Cosmetics Direct. It's the first of many deadlines and requirements, some of which are still in flux, that will slowly reshape how the industry is regulated over the next few years.  For example, MoCRA will give the FDA new visibility into what's in beauty products and where they are manufactured. It also provides new authority to the FDA to issue mandatory product recalls and alert consumers to common allergens through mandatory warning labels. That's thanks, in part, to new visibility into fragrance ingredient lists, which had long been classified as intellectual property but must now be shared with the FDA. Previously, America's regulation was made up of small federal and state laws, which created a growing movement for better regulation. For example, brands like BeautyCounter spent years lobbying for better regulation on social media and on the hill in Washington, while brands like Henry Rose by Michelle Pfeiffer was created to offer an alternative to the under-regulated fragrance industry.   So how did this piece of legislation finally get passed? While you may not know attorney Katlin McKelvie by name, she is a Washington D.C.-based lawyer who was integral in the creation of MoCRA.  McKelvie has more than two decades of experience working in food and drug law, including 11 years at the FDA. She also served as the Deputy General Counsel of the United States' Department of Health and Human Services and as the Deputy Health Policy Director and Senior FDA Counsel to the Senate Committee on health, education, labor and pensions for chair Patty Murray. While working with Congress, she helped shape many pieces of legislation that have impacted us all, including MoCRA, before becoming a partner of a private D.C. firm called Gibson, Dunn and Crutcher. On today's episode of The Glossy Beauty Podcast, McKelvie shares the origin story for MoCRA, including the challenges and compromises made during its early days in the Senate. She also shares the challenges she suspects brands may face while navigating compliance, the requirements the FDA will release next and the changes consumers can expect in the coming years.

On today's episode we explore the concept of Human Design, with Ai McKelvie. If you haven't heard of Human Design it is a holistic self-knowledge system based on your exact time, date, and place of birth. Human Design shows you where and how to access your body's consciousness as a decision-making tool, and ultimately, how to live as your true self, and as we find out in this episode, can be a great tool to navigate your way through your relationships, including parenting, partnerships and even work related connections! Ali McKelvie is a pioneer of spiritual consciousness and mind body connection. Through her own life journey of four near death experiences, her career as a Federal Agent, and healing two of her own auto-immune conditions, Ali has found the 3 keys to unlocking the secrets to optimised living. Kinesiology, German New Medicine and NLP. Her mission is to upgrade human consciousness and give people the tools to spark a deeper sense of purpose by recognising their own unique gifts. During this chat she shared parts of my human design reading, which blew me away in how precise it was… (so it can get a little personal at times but that's what I am here for). It is such an interesting way to view and understand certain personality traits we hold, and know that they are part of what makes us who we are, and it is ok! Ross explains how the volleyball scene works, the opportunities for skill development, international travel and more that it has afforded him as well as his methods of funding what is not quite a sport that pays too well! He works as a PE teacher, has his own PT community, workitout and a few things in the pipeline! Enjoy!!

Kiwis will be able to enjoy a drink at the races again, after a bill protecting this tradition passed a third reading in Parliament. National's MP for Rangitīkei explained that race meetings lacked resources to provide hospitality services, and allowing patrons to bring their own wine and beer would draw in the crowds. Ian McKelvie says alcohol law reform bills put a stop to this Kiwi tradition, which created issues for smaller clubs. "Bigger clubs can comply because they've got all sorts of facilities they can use, and the small clubs can't. And that's really where this law has the most effect, with our small racing clubs." Today's guest is Mindset Mentor Jen Mckelvie. Jen is a mindset mentor here to help you dive into the thoughts you think - so you can think differently, resulting in a life that lights you up. It is her belief that when we teach ourselves to pause, question, adjust and act, we make all the difference in what our life looks like. She practices a form of work that she calls ‘cognitive dissonance'. Although the theory of cognitive dissonance is not new, it has not been applied to spiritual / self growth as she is doing now. She specializes in money mindset for individuals and business owners, but honestly, the way she works can, and has, been applied to any ‘issue'. In this episode, Jen tells us about how she transitioned from an architect to a mindset mentor, and how she's been able to develop quickly and smoothly on a spiritual level. Jen says that every day is the best ever, and she genuinely believes that, she doesn't just pretend to believe that. In addition, she believes that everyone is capable of this mindset, and it's a choice. This sounded impossible to me initially, but Jen tells us how she reached this place of authentic happiness in her life. We also explore difficult philosophical topics like why bad things happen to good people, why life is so hard for everyone is all different ways, what we can do about wanting to compare ourselves to everyone, - JEN MCKELVIE - WEBSITE: www.originalparti.com INSTAGRAM: @cloud_whisperer | www.instagram.com/cloud_whisperer - CONNECT - Connect with Emily to ask any questions that you have & share thoughts and feedback. Pilot UFO sightings have been a constant in the world of UFOlogy ever since the sighting in 1947, that started the public fascination with the subject, by Kenneth Arnold, who was flying in his own plane near Mount Rainier in Washington State. Even though these are often single witness sightings, researchers generally take them seriously, as pilots, especially a commercial pilots, risk their reputations and continued employment by coming forward. But, what about airplane passengers? In the case of passenger sightings, you often have multiple witnesses, or at least one witness that can corroborate the pilot report. An instance where a passenger witness came forward to back up a pilot report occurred in 1948 in the case of the classic Chiles-Whitted UFO encounter. On July 24, 1948, pilot Clarence Chiles and co-pilot John Whitted, were flying a DC-3 over Alabama. At about 2:45 a.m., Chiles spotted a red glow up ahead and brought Whitted's attention to what he assumed was an Army jet. It closed in on the DC-3 quickly, shot past the right side of the plane, and then, with a burst of flame coming out of its rear, climbed up into the clouds. The pilots reported that the object was torpedo-shaped, had no wings, was 100 feet long, and 25 to 30 feet in diameter. Passenger Clarence L. McKelvie added to the credibility of the sighting by reporting that he saw a bright light streak by his window at that time. He later appeared in the documentary, “UFOs: It Has Begun,” (A 1976 and 1979 re-release of the 1974 documentary “UFOs: Past, Present, and Future.”) and there he says he spoke with one of the pilots and his description matches theirs. The series of conflicts known as the Wars of the Roses tore through fifteenth-century England: the houses of Lancaster and York and their supporters fought over notions of good governance and the right to wear the crown, while vast swathes of the population took up arms in rebellion or on the battlefield, or lived in fear of rampaging armies. What can historians deduce about popular involvement in the Wars, including in key events such as the Battle of Towton (1461)? How can the treatment of prisoners and the battlefield dead at the battles of Wakefield (1460) and Tewkesbury (1471) reveal concepts of chivalry and military ethics? And how did those in power – from Edward IV, to Margaret of Anjou and Richard III – seek to manage popular fears? In this podcast, Dr Gordon McKelvie discusses his research on these topics with Dr Sophie Ambler, Deputy Director of the Centre for War and Diplomacy. Dr Gordon McKelvie is Senior Lecturer in Medieval History at the University of Winchester, where he is also a convenor for the Centre for Medieval and Renaissance Research. He has worked extensively on political society and warfare in England in the long fifteenth century. Following various journal articles and chapters, his first book was published with Boydell and Brewer in 2020: Bastard Feudalism, English Society and the Law: The Statutes of Livery, 1390 to 1520. This examines the effectiveness of new laws on social relations and how ‘bastard feudal' ties facilitated many of the rebellions and acts of noble violence in the long fifteenth century. Dr McKelvie's new research considers both the role of chivalry and martial ethics in the Wars, and the importance of managing popular emotions – principally fear and hatred – for use as weapons of military strategy. Dr McKelvie's book Bastard Feudalism, English Society and the Law: The Statutes of Livery, 1390 to 1520 is available from Boydell and Brewer. You can learn more about this research in his blog for the Boydell and Brewer website. In a recent article for The Conversation, marking the 550th anniversary of the Battle of Tewkesbury, Dr McKelvie discusses: ‘Wars of the Roses: How the French meddled in this very English conflict'. Music credit: Kai Engel, 'Flames of Rome', Calls and Echoes (Southern's City Lab, 2014).

Sarah McKelvie enjoyed a fulfilling career as a doctor, and her work in hospital medicine and general practice took her all over the world. When her 1st child was born in 2007, she thought she'd be back at work in 6 months, but 2 more children later and her 6 month career break turned into 12 years. During her career break, Sarah became immersed in various charity projects from fundraising to setting up football teams for children with cerebral palsy, for which she won a FA Grassroots Volunteers Award. Contemplating returning to medicine for a number of years, Sarah set up a Facebook Group to help build a community of support for doctors in a similar position. And then, galvanised by the call for doctors to return to work during the pandemic, Sarah found her way back, and now works full-time as a clinical fellow in geriatric medicine at Oxford University Hospitals NHS Trust. Hear how Sarah found the courage to return to medicine in one of the most challenging public health times of our generation and the journey she's been on since, updating her skills, rebuilding her professional confidence and helping others navigate their way back too. "I was really under confident about working and as I even thought about going back to being a doctor, I just had this knot of anxiety in my stomach, thinking, 'Oh.. it's too big. I can't, I've forgotten everything'. I just couldn't see myself in that role. I couldn't see myself how I used to be. But very quickly by doing something, I felt more confident. Only by trying it did that confidence come back." But the desire to travel started earlier. I think it came from moving a lot as a kid. Most of my travel these days is for tennis. Though I would love to do more just for the sake of going somewhere new. I have a slight preference for the natural wonders and sights than the cityscapes and a bit more on the adventure side. My ultimate trip would be kayaking the Inside Passage, Canada." Today, 3 December 2020, is International Day of People with Disability (IDPWD). About Liam McKelvie: The day before my 2nd birthday, I contracted meningococcal septicaemia. This led to amputating both my legs and hands. Growing up without limbs was not easy. So I've had to embrace certain mindsets and attitudes to overcome difficulties, both mental and physical.  I've always had to push my boundaries to find out what I'm truly capable of. Now I'm looking to spread my attitudes and approach to others who can hugely benefit from my experience. I believe that you can achieve almost anything you desire; however, we often hold ourselves back and limit our potential. I want to change this. My life purpose is to help you create a positive existence for yourself. I want to inspire and drive you to make changes towards creating the life you dream of. Our time on this planet is limited, yet most of us waste our time living in disappointment, just drifting from day to day with no purpose, reason or ambitions. If I can inspire as many people as possible in one lifetime to take a leap towards finding purpose, a leap towards achieving their goals or a leap towards finding happiness, I will be complete. In my ideal world I would not need to inspire as we would already believe in ourselves and each other. We would all surround ourselves with positive people, positive experiences and think with a positive mindset. However, this is not how the world works. I feel it is my passion, purpose and duty to inspire you. I feel it is my passion, purpose and duty to help create the world we dream of. ~ You can find Liam McKelvie on...Website: https://zerolimbits.com/LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/liammckelvie2/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/ZeroLimbits/Twitter: https://twitter.com/zerolimbitsInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/zerolimbits/ ======================================================================= If you enjoyed the episode, if it helped you in any way, or if you had ONE aha moment, please let me know, hit the subscribe button and leave me a review and a comment. In this episode the horsemen are joined by a horselady...horsewoman??? Anyways, Miss Emily Dimas!!!! Emily comes in and gives a much needed fresh perspective, cuz we don't want a bunch of twenty-something old dudes talking about a group of teens, right? That would be kinda creepy. Or is it? You decide, and listen. We had fun, we hope you do too. Bye-eeeeeee. fourhorsemenofrhetoric.com
