What if our goal had not been to land on Mars, but in pure consciousness? The experience of pure consciousness—what does it look like? What is the essence of human consciousness? In The Elephant and the Blind. The Experience of Pure Consciousness: Philosophy, Science, and 500+ Experiential Reports (MIT Press, 2024)," influential philosopher Thomas Metzinger, one of the world's leading researchers on consciousness, brings together more than 500 experiential reports to offer the world's first comprehensive account of states of pure consciousness. Drawing on a large psychometric study of meditators in 57 countries, Metzinger focuses on “pure awareness” in meditation—the simplest form of experience there is—to illuminate the most fundamental aspects of how consciousness, the brain, and illusions of self all interact. Starting with an exploration of existential ease and ending on Bewusstseinskultur, a culture of consciousness, Metzinger explores the increasingly non-egoic experiences of silence, wakefulness, and clarity, of bodiless body-experience, ego-dissolution, and nondual awareness. From there, he assembles a big picture—the elephant in the parable, from which the book's title comes—of what it would take to arrive at a minimal model explanation for conscious experience and create a genuine culture of consciousness. Freeing pure awareness from new-age gurus and old religions, The Elephant and the Blind combines personal reports of pure consciousness with incisive analysis to address the whole consciousness community, from neuroscientists to artists, and its accessibility echoes the author's career-long commitment to widening access to philosophy itself. In this episode I am once again joined by Dr Evan Thompson: Professor of Philosophy at the University of British Columbia, an Associate Member of the Department of Asian Studies and the Department of Psychology, and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada.
Dr Thompson discusses his 2014 book ‘Waking, Dreaming, Being' and takes a deep dive into the self from the point of view of the world's contemplative traditions as well as neuroscience and philosophy of mind. Dr Thompson shares his life-long fasciation with the way in which consciousness and the sense of self change across different phases of the wake-sleep cycle, and challenges claims that insight into the self is a means to eliminate suffering and attain enlightenment. Dr Thompson reveals his own deep practice of meditation, lucid dreaming, Tai Chi and Chinese energy arts, and explains how he, as both a trained skeptical philosopher and as a dedicated practitioner, approaches the religious framing of practice and related concepts such as ‘chi' and ‘enlightenment'. Dr. Thomas Metzinger is a renowned philosopher and professor of theoretical philosophy at the Johannes Gutenberg University of Mainz. He also serves as a member of the European Commission's High-Level Expert Group on Artificial Intelligence. Our eye-opening conversation with Dr. Metzinger explored a range of favorite topics all centered on the question: what does it mean to be a human in the post-modern landscape of for-profit healthscare, algorithmic decision-making, and endless war. We also discuss how the brightest future might result from the tiniest changes at the level of the individual, despite the self's inevitable recession into the increasingly totalitarian, yet inevitably unstable, global industrial-state machinery. The BreakPoint Podcast
Artificial Intelligence Is Not the Same as Artificial Consciousness

The BreakPoint Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 19, 2022 5:21

In June, a Google employee who claimed the company had created a sentient artificial intelligence bot was placed on administrative leave. Blake Lemoine, part of Google's Responsible AI (“artificial intelligence”) program, had been interacting with a language AI known as “Language Model for Dialogue Applications,” or LaMDA. When the algorithm began talking about rights and personhood, Lemoine decided his superiors and eventually the public needed to know. To him, it was clear the program had become “sentient,” with the ability to feel, think, and experience life like a human.   Google denied the claim (which is exactly what they would do, isn't it?). “There was no evidence that LaMDA was sentient (and lots of evidence against it),”  said a spokesperson.  The Atlantic's Stephen Marche agreed: “The fact that LaMDA in particular has been the center of attention is, frankly, a little quaint…. Convincing chatbots are far from groundbreaking tech at this point.”   True, but they are the plot of a thousand science fiction novels. So, the question remains, is a truly “sentient” AI even possible? How could code develop the capacity for feelings, experiences, or intentionality? Even if our best algorithms can one day perfectly mirror the behavior of people, would they be conscious?   How one answers such questions depends on one's anthropology. What are people? Are we merely “computers made of flesh?” Or is there something more to us than the sum of our parts, a true ghost in the machine? A true ghost in the shell?   These kinds of questions about humans and the things that humans make reflect what philosopher David Chalmers has called “the hard problem of consciousness.” In every age, even if strictly material evidence for the soul remains elusive, people have sensed that personhood, willpower, and first-person subjective experiences mean something. Christians are among those who believe that we are more than the “stuff” of our bodies, though Christians, unlike others, would be quick to add, but not less. There is something to us and the world that goes beyond the physical because there is a non-material, eternal God behind it all.  Christians also hold that there are qualitative differences between people and algorithms, between life and non-living things like rocks and stars, between image bearers and other living creatures. Though much about sentience and consciousness remains a mystery, personhood rests on the solid metaphysical ground of a personal and powerful Creator.  Materialists have a much harder problem declaring such distinctions. By denying the existence of anything other than the physical “stuff” of the universe, they don't merely erase the substance of certain aspects of the human experience such as good, evil, purpose, and free will: There's no real grounding for thinking of a “person” as unique, different, or valuable.   According to philosopher Thomas Metzinger, for example, in a conversation with Sam Harris, none of us “ever was or had a self.” Take brain surgery, Metzinger says. You peel back the skull and realize that there is only tissue, tissue made of the exact same components as everything else in the universe. Thus, he concludes, the concept of an individual “person” is meaningless, a purely linguistic construct designed to make sense of phenomena that aren't there.   That kind of straightforward claim, though shocking to most people, is consistent within a purely materialist worldview. What quickly becomes inconsistent are claims of ethical norms or proper authority in a world without “persons.” In a world without a why or an ought, there's only is, which tends to be the prerogative of the powerful, a fact that Harris and Metzinger candidly acknowledge.   In a materialist world, any computational program could potentially become “sentient” simply by sufficiently mirroring (and even surpassing) human neurology. After all, in this worldview, there's no qualitative difference between people and robots, only degrees of complexity. This line of thinking, however, quickly collapses into dissonance. Are we really prepared to look at the ones and zeros of our computer programs the same way we look at a newborn baby? Are we prepared to extend human rights and privileges to our machines and programs?  In Marvel's 2015 film Avengers: Age of Ultron, lightning from Thor's hammer hits a synthetic body programmed with an AI algorithm. A new hero, Vision, comes to life and helps save the day. It's one of the more entertaining movie scenes to wrestle with questions of life and consciousness.  Even in the Marvel universe, no one would believe that a mere AI algorithm, even one designed by Tony Stark, could be sentient, no matter how sophisticated it was. In order to get to consciousness, there needed to be a “secret sauce,” in this case lightning from a Nordic hammer or power from an Infinity Stone. In the same way, as stunning as advances in artificial intelligence are, a consciousness that is truly human requires a spark of the Divine.

And for an applied ethics perspective, I think the most important thing is if we want to minimize suffering in the world, and if we want to minimize animal suffering, we should always, err on the side of caution, we should always be on the safe side. Thomas MetzingerShould we advocate for a moratorium on the development of artificial sentience? What might that look like, and what would be the challenges?Thomas Metzinger was a full professor of theoretical philosophy at the Johannes Gutenberg Universitat Mainz until 2019. He was the president of the German cognitive science society from 2005 to 2007. And of the association for the scientific study of consciousness from 2009 to 2011, as of 2011, he is an adjunct fellow at the Frankfurt Institute for advanced studies, a co-founder of the German effective altruism foundation, president of the Barbara Wengeler foundation, and on the advisory board of the Giordano Bruno foundation. In 2009, he published a popular book, The Ego Tunnel: the science of the mind and the myth of the self, which addresses a wider audience and discusses the ethical, cultural, and social consequences of consciousness research. And from 2018 to 2020 Metzinger worked as a member of the European Commission's high level expert group on artificial intelligence. Tennis – French Open – Nadal overcome foot, Ruud for 14th French Open title Rafael Nadal has captured his 22nd Grand Slam title and 14th French Open championship by whipping Casper Ruud, 6-3, 6-3, 6-0. Ruud had a 3-1 lead in the second set and didn’t win another game, with Nadal taking the last 11 and finishing with 37 winners with just 16 unforced errors. But Nadal said his painful left foot was numbed by multiple injections to two nerves during the tournament. He admitted after the final that at any other tournament, he wouldn’t have continued playing under extreme physical conditions. The foot has been bothering him for two years, yet he’s now threatening to complete a calendar Grand Slam. Nadal said he will try some new treatments over the next week to see whether that might allow him to enter Wimbledon this month. Golf – PGA – Horschel’s big eagle secures a big win at the Memorial Billy Horschel made an eagle putt on the 15th hole that all but secured his win in the Memorial at Muirfield Village. Horschel shot a 72 and won by four shots over Aaron Wise. Horschel’s eagle putt from just inside 55 feet had the perfect line and perfect speed, bending left and dropping in the left side of the cup as he stretched out both arms in a quiet, disbelieving celebration. Horschel finished at 13-under 275 and won $2.16 million, the largest paycheck of his career. Golf – LPGA – Lee wins record prize in Major Minjee Lee won the U.S. Women’s Open by four strokes over Mina Harigae at Pine Needles to earn $1.8 million, the largest payout in the history of women’s golf. Golf – Champions – Kelly beats Triplett in playoff Jerry Kelly birdied the first playoff hole to beat Kirk Triplett and win the PGA Tour Champions’ Principal Charity Classic.  Kelly hit his approach to 4 feet on the par-4 18th to set up the winning putt. The 55-year-old from Wisconsin has nine victories on the 50-and-over tour after winning three times on the PGA Tour. Kelly and Triplett each shot 5-under 67 to finish at 18-under 198, two strokes ahead of Steven Alker and Hall of Famer Bernhard Langer. NASCAR – Logano wins in OT Joey Logano jockeyed for the lead with Kyle Busch in overtime before winning the inaugural NASCAR Cup Series race at World Wide Technology Raceway. Logano moved ahead of Busch for good just before the white flag flew, giving Team Penske its second major win of the day. Penske won the IndyCar race with Will Power earlier in the day in Detroit. Kurt Busch finished third with Logano’s teammate, Ryan Blaney, fourth and Aric Almirola in fifth. FIFA – USA Soccer – Macario out of Women’s World Cup qualifiers with ACL injury U.S. national team forward Catarina Macario injured her the anterior cruciate ligament in a match with French club team Lyon and will miss World Cup qualifying next month. Macario was injured 13 minutes into Lyon’s season finale on Wednesday, a 4-0 victory over Issy. The 22-year-old was Lyon’s top scorer this season with 23 goals in 35 matches across all competitions. The injury means she’ll miss the CONCACAF W Championships next month in Mexico, which determine the region’s World Cup teams. FIFA – Ukraine’s World Cup quest ends with loss to Wales amid war Ukraine has missed out on qualifying for the World Cup after the war-disrupted team lost 1-0 to Wales in the European playoff final for the FIFA soccer showpiece. Andriy Yarmolenko inadvertently headed the ball into his own net while trying to clear Wales captain Gareth Bale’s first-half free kick. This was an agonizing end to Ukraine’s emotionally charged mission to qualify for the World Cup in Qatar while remaining under invasion by Russia. Palat’s goal, off a nifty pass from Nikita Kucherov, capped a comeback that began after Mika Zibanejad and Chris Kreider scored power-play goals in a span of just over two minutes in the second period to put the Rangers up 2-0. Facing the prospect of falling behind 3-0, the Lightning rallied with Kucherov scoring on the power play in the second period and Steven Stamkos tying it early in the third. Andrei Vasilevskiy made 28 saves for the Lightning. Game 4 is Tuesday night in Tampa. Atlanta took a 17-point lead into the fourth. Mitchell hit three 3-pointers and led the Fever with 20 points on 7-of-14 shooting. The rest of the Indiana players shot just 30.8% (16 of 52) from the field. The Sky took control in the third-quarter, out-scoring the Mystics 31-22 . Kahleah Copper led the Sky with 15 points, Parker was four assists shy of a triple double with 12 points and 12 rebounds. Washington hopes to have head coach Mike Thibault and assistant coach Shelley Patterson back after they missed the game due to health and safety protocols. Mystics’ leading scorer Elena Delle Donne sat out the game to rest. Tiana Hawkins had 21 points off the bench for Washington. IndyCar – Power gives Penske, Chevrolet win in final Belle Isle race Will Power closed the Belle Isle era with a Team Penske victory on Sunday by winning the final Detroit Grand Prix on the island park to reclaim the IndyCar points lead. Power held off Alexander Rossi in the closing laps to earn his first win of the season. All three Team Penske drivers now have a win through seven IndyCar races this season. The race will return to its original downtown street course layout in 2023. The Power win was a celebration for team owner Roger Penske, a longtime Detroit resident and promoter of the race. NCAABSB – Notre Dame edges Texas Tech 2-1 to earn Super Regional berth Jack Findlay got the final four outs, surviving a bases-loaded jam in the bottom of the ninth inning, and Notre Dame won the Statesboro Regional with a 2-1 victory over Texas Tech. The Fighting Irish (38-14), the No. 2 seed in the regional, beat third-seed Texas Tech twice by a run and No. 16 overall seed and tourney host Georgia Southern 6-4 in winning a berth in the Super Regionals. Notre Dame took a 1-0 in the third when Spencer Myers doubled and scored on Ryan Cole’s single to left. The Irish scored again in the fourth when Zack Prajzner doubled and scored on a two-out single by Cole. NCAABSB – Louisville pounds Michigan 20-1 to force Monday finale Ben Metzinger hit two home-runs and a double, driving in five runs, to power Louisville to a 20-1 romp over Michigan in the Louisville Regional, forcing a Monday showdown for a Super Regional berth. The Cardinals took control early with a four-run first inning. Levi Usher had a two-run single after two walks and a hit batter loaded the bases with one out. Logan Beard added a two-out two-run single. Louisville added three more runs in the second on Metzinger’s first homer — a two-run shot — and Cameron Masterman’s RBI double. Tennis – French Open – Nadal overcome foot, Ruud for 14th French Open title Rafael Nadal has captured his 22nd Grand Slam title and 14th French Open championship by whipping Casper Ruud, 6-3, 6-3, 6-0. At 36, Nadal is the oldest title winner in the history of the event. Lee closed with an even-par 71 to finish at 13-under 271 after the Australian flirted with the tournament record of 16 under set by Juli Inkster in 1999 at Old Waverly.  Harigae shot a 72 for her best finish in a major and a check of slightly more than $1 million. Wales will head to a first World Cup in 64 years and will open against the United States on Nov. 21 before playing Iran and England. Payroll has been a sensitive topic when it comes to the Guardians. Today all players settled and signed, giving the Guardians their first official payroll for 2022. It is just short of 50 million for the second year in a row which has not happened since 04 and 05. We look at avenues to improve the team including extensions, free agency and also taking back a one-year bad contract like we often see in other sports We pivot to our college baseball coverage. We begin by talking about the Xavier and Indiana matchup which we highlighted last week. While the players I focused on didn't have a big weekend it was a huge offensive weekend. We then focus on Jonathan Cannon who fits the Guardians profile currently has the second-best strikeout to walk ratio in the country. We also talk about 5th ranked Hunter Barco, as well as another lefty in 17th, ranked Nate Savino. Savino is a player I mocked to the Guardians out of high school. While Virginia has a checkered history of success, Savino has to be one of the biggest risers in the college group this spring. Adam Mazur of Iowa is the top prospect in the Big Ten. He had a rough weekend against Brandon Birdsell and Texas Tech but is another pitcher on the rise in the 2022 MLB draft. We end with a focus on Ben Metzinger who has likely been the biggest winner in terms of rising value in 2022. It is a super deep catcher crop, the best I have ever seen, and Metzinger of Louisville is currently arguably the top-performing catcher in the class.  Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!Built BarBuilt Bar is a protein bar that tastes like a candy bar. Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is Rationality and Philosophy, Part 1: Less Wrong Rationality and Mainstream Philosophy, published by lukeprog. Part of the sequence: Rationality and Philosophy Despite Yudkowsky's distaste for mainstream philosophy, Less Wrong is largely a philosophy blog. Major topics include epistemology, philosophy of language, free will, metaphysics, metaethics, normative ethics, machine ethics, axiology, philosophy of mind, and more. Moreover, standard Less Wrong positions on philosophical matters have been standard positions in a movement within mainstream philosophy for half a century. That movement is sometimes called "Quinean naturalism" after Harvard's W.V. Quine, who articulated the Less Wrong approach to philosophy in the 1960s. Quine was one of the most influential philosophers of the last 200 years, so I'm not talking about an obscure movement in philosophy. Let us survey the connections. Quine thought that philosophy was continuous with science - and where it wasn't, it was bad philosophy. He embraced empiricism and reductionism. He rejected the notion of libertarian free will. He regarded postmodernism as sophistry. Like Wittgenstein and Yudkowsky, Quine didn't try to straightforwardly solve traditional Big Questions as much as he either dissolved those questions or reframed them such that they could be solved. He dismissed endless semantic arguments about the meaning of vague terms like knowledge. He rejected a priori knowledge. He rejected the notion of privileged philosophical insight: knowledge comes from ordinary knowledge, as best refined by science. Eliezer once said that philosophy should be about cognitive science, and Quine would agree. Quine famously wrote: The stimulation of his sensory receptors is all the evidence anybody has had to go on, ultimately, in arriving at his picture of the world. Why not just see how this construction really proceeds? Why not settle for psychology? But isn't this using science to justify science? Isn't that circular? Not quite, say Quine and Yudkowsky. It is merely "reflecting on your mind's degree of trustworthiness, using your current mind as opposed to something else." Luckily, the brain is the lens that sees its flaws. And thus, says Quine: Epistemology, or something like it, simply falls into place as a chapter of psychology and hence of natural science. Yudkowsky once wrote, "If there's any centralized repository of reductionist-grade naturalistic cognitive philosophy, I've never heard mention of it." When I read that I thought: What? That's Quinean naturalism! That's Kornblith and Stich and Bickle and the Churchlands and Thagard and Metzinger and Northoff! There are hundreds of philosophers who do that! Non-Quinean philosophy But I should also mention that LW philosophy / Quinean naturalism is not the largest strain of mainstream philosophy. Most philosophy is still done in relative ignorance (or ignoring) of cognitive science. Consider the preface to Rethinking Intuition: Perhaps more than any other intellectual discipline, philosophical inquiry is driven by intuitive judgments, that is, by what "we would say" or by what seems true to the inquirer. For most of philosophical theorizing and debate, intuitions serve as something like a source of evidence that can be used to defend or attack particular philosophical positions. One clear example of this is a traditional philosophical enterprise commonly known as conceptual analysis. Anyone familiar with Plato's dialogues knows how this type of inquiry is conducted. We see Socrates encounter someone who claims to have figured out the true essence of some abstract notion... the person puts forward a definition or analysis of the notion in the form of necessary and sufficient conditions that are thought to capture all and only instances of the concept in question. Socrates then ...
