In 2015, Laura Sherman and her colleagues from Colorado Sen. Michael Bennet's office rode horses into a special part of the Rocky Mountains called the Thompson Divide. Laura had landed in Sen. Bennet's office after grad school as part of a policy fellowship with the American Academy for the Advancement of Science. At the time she was a legislative assistant to Sen. Bennet. She and her colleagues were working on legislation to protect federally-owned portions of the Divide from future energy and mineral extraction. It was all part of a plan she made years earlier, while studying geochemistry at the University of Michigan. Laura realized that to influence climate policy, she needed to connect her research to policymakers. Today, Laura continues to connect people and policy as president of  the Michigan Energy Innovation Business Council, a trade association that's advancing clean power in the state. This week on With Great Power, Laura Sherman talks about the state of advanced metering infrastructure in Michigan, why she wants utilities to deploy next-generation smart meters, and the value the technology provides to Michiganders and consumers everywhere.Credits: Hosted by Brad Langley. Produced by Mary Catherine O'Connor. Edited by Anne Bailey. Original music and engineering by Sean Marquand. Stephen Lacey is executive editor. And now under the leadership of President Kevin Kasowitz, the strategic plan is being refreshed to reflect on lessons learned, adjust course and make progress toward becoming a more contemporary institution focused on cross-cutting priorities and solutions. With Synergy Unleashed, the refreshed, reframed, and re-imagined strategic plan MSU 2030 Excellence for Global Impact reaffirms leadership's commitment to a shared vision for the university through the end of the decade. Here to discuss the evolution of MSU 2030, our MSU President, Kevin Guskiewicz and MSU, vice President for Strategic Initiatives, bill Beekman and Kevin and Bill, great to have you back in the state of the art studios of Impact Radio here on campus. And Kevin, you've said that the compelling vision of an institution taking on the challenges of the 21st century is among the things that attracted you to Michigan State. How so, and why?Kevin Guskiewicz:Well, Michigan State University is a proudly public university, one that fills a commitment to the people of Michigan. We rely on taxpayer dollars to transform the lives and improve the quality of life for Michiganders. And so much of the work that's done here through our teaching research and outreach is about the common good. I mean, the new strategic plan that we're here talking about, it's woven throughout the entire roadmap. It's about all that we do is for the public good, the common good. And we felt that the first time we touched down here in East Lansing. And 18 months in, I feel even better about where we're headed than what I did two years ago when I started exploring the opportunity.Speaker 1:And Bill, you've been involved with the plan's development and implementation from the start. What strikes you about the refresh?Bill Beekman:Well, I think one of the most important things about the refresh is the fact that we're actually doing it. So often you have strategic plans that get built and there's inordinate amounts of time spent working on them, and then they sort of drift away. And I think what's really wonderful about the creation of this plan and those that were there at the start, is that they very intentionally decided that we should have a refresh that about a third 40% of the way into the implementation of the plan, that we should pause, take a look at the environment, what's changed, what's going well, what should we be thinking about changing based on internal and external factors and recalibrate. And so it's really a living plan. And to me that's one the most important aspects of the plan is that it does change. It does adapt to our circumstances and our environment.(03:08):It allows for us to think about where should we be course correcting? What things should we be doing differently? How should we learn from what we've done? And that constant course correcting and a living plan, I think continues to make it relevant to what we're doing. And so the process has really been wonderful and allowed our team to focus on the future. It was fortuitous that it happened as Kevin had been here for about nine months or thereabouts, so his energy and vision could be incorporated into the work we're doing. And so yeah, it's been a wonderful process and it's great to see it finished and the work of implementation goes on.Speaker 1 (03:57):Yes. And Kevin, you've often referred to MSU 2030 as a roadmap in addition to a strategic plan. Why is it important for MSU to have this plan and to refresh it now? And what do you mean by synergy unleashed?Speaker 2 (04:12):Well, I've always used the word roadmap rus because I think you need a roadmap to get to a destination. And the destination that was agreed upon back in 2021 were set of established goals and priorities and how we were going to get there needed to be sort of re-imagined. But again, I think as Bill's already said, it's sort of reaffirming those six initial prio...

Host David From continues the story of Marlena Pavlos-Hackney, a Michigan restaurant owner who refused to close during the pandemic after the state's first round of executive orders was ruled unconstitutional. Joined by her attorney, Helen Brinkman, Marlena recounts being singled out by state leadership, arrested, fined, and jailed—despite unequal enforcement and conflicting rulings—after she chose to keep serving her community. Brinkman walks through the legal maze: administrative suspensions, contempt findings, and split decisions that could set a statewide precedent on executive power, due process, and equal protection. Together they explain why Marlena's case now aims for the United States Supreme Court—and why the outcome matters for every Michigander who expects leaders to follow the same rules they impose on the people.

This episode of Behind the Mitten finds us back in our second "home" of Gaylord Michigan, along with our co-host, and director of the Gaylord Tourism Bureau, Paul Beachnau. A regular on the show, and one of our best buddies, Paul takes around Gaylord, to spots both brand new, and old favorites. Come along as we go all outdoors, and a little bit inside, in Gaylord Michigan.Did you know that you can see elk literally right downtown Gaylord? It's a true story, and they've just built an awesome new viewing platform that you can get incredible vistas of these majestic animals that is located just minutes from I-75. Paul takes us on a tour, and record on-site. The elk herd in Gaylord is about 60 strong....and these animals, which can weigh upwards of 800 pounds and stand six feet tall, are particulary engaging.....or alarming....in the fall, when the bugling and rutting reaches a peak. Perfect time to stop by, or to do a deeper dive viewing the elk at the nearby Pigeon River State Forest. Where to find all the amazing elk in Gaylord Michigan, and how to view them best.Next, we hit the local disco where we find sparkling gems to dance the night away to. OK, that might be a stretch, but what we encountered was equally awesome...and sparkly. We catch up with regular Mark Copeland from Jay's Sporting Goods  who always knows the coolest equipment, the best seasonal wear, and just what Michiganders need each season. We learn about the fascinating Yooperlites, those crazy glo-in-the-dark rocks that are causing obsessions around the state. Jay's has some super cool gear to help you find them, plus tons more for all your fall adventures. Next, another BTM regular, and great friend, Jordan Awrey comes back to chat about all things Snowbelt Brewing, where he is officially their marketing manager, and unofficially the "mayor" of Gaylord. Please don't be offended actual Mayor Todd, it's just that Jordan is such a great cheerleader of Gaylord, and turns that passion into action, in the form of their summer concert series and so much more. We always love to hear what Jordan has planned next, because it's honestly always amazing. Finally, a visit to Gaylord would NOT be complete without a visit to Michigan's Most Spectacular Resort, Treetops. We love using Treetops as a base for exploring Northern Michigan, we love joining friends at the resort for pizza in the pub, or for skiing or EXTREME tubing during the season. The fall, they are offering a series of Fall Progressive Dinners at Treetops that we would be beyond happy to attend. Book your tickets now, and you will be delighted not just by the seasonal menu, but also by the incredible autumnal views that you'll get to take in via your very own golf cart tour as you cruise the award-winning courses at Treetops while enjoying a cocktail and snacks. No need to swing your club this time, just drive along with a guide who will give you the deets on this incredible spot. Then, converge at the top of the hill at Legends restaurant for a mulit-course meal. Originally loaded July 23rd, reloaded July 25th. Chris Holman welcomes Ed Duggan, Duggan for Governor Campaign Manager, Detroit, MI. Additionally fresh news from the morning of recording, July 17th, was that Mayor Duggan had picked up the endorsement of the Detroit Regional Chamber's PAC. The Detroit Regional Chamber Political Action Committee (PAC) has announced its endorsement of Mike Duggan for the 2026 Michigan gubernatorial election. With a quorum of PAC members present, the decision to endorse Duggan was unanimous. Duggan, who is running in one of the nation's most high-profile independent runs for office, has a proven track record of executive-level business experience prior to his time as mayor, as the leader who successfully transformed the then-challenged Detroit Medical Center, while he also served on the Detroit Regional Chamber Board of Directors. “The Chamber and businesses across the state are growing increasingly concerned about the inability of our political parties to find common ground and move Michigan forward,” said Chamber President and Chief Executive Officer, Sandy K. Baruah. “Throughout his business and government career, Mike Duggan has proven he can bring people together to work toward common goals. Voters across Michigan are tired of the political infighting; they are clamoring for results-driven leadership, which is exactly what Mike has brought to every leadership position he's held.” Under Duggan's effective leadership, Detroit has experienced remarkable revitalization and has become a national model for urban turnaround. His focus on fiscal stability, economic development, and efficient, civil, and inclusive government has created a more favorable environment for businesses to invest in and for residents to thrive. For the first time in decades, Detroit's population is growing, thanks to Duggan's leadership, which is the metric he asked voters to hold him accountable to when he was first elected. “Mayor Duggan's tenure in Detroit has been a case study in effective, consistent leadership,” said Honigman Chairman and Chief Executive Officer David Foltyn, Chairman of the Chamber PAC. “He has demonstrated a unique ability to bring stakeholders together to solve generational challenges. The business community has full confidence that he will bring that same steady hand and relentless focus on results to Lansing, creating the stable, pro-growth environment Michigan needs to compete on a global scale.” The Chamber PAC was the first business organization to endorse Duggan during his write-in campaign for Detroit Mayor in 2013 and supported him in his two successful runs for re-election. PAC members are confident that Duggan will apply the same data-driven, results-oriented leadership that was successful in Detroit to the entire state. His leadership will be instrumental in fostering a more competitive business climate, strengthening infrastructure, improving educational outcomes, and building a more prosperous future for all Michiganders. The race to follow Gov. Gretchen Whitmer is populated by many good and long-time friends of the Chamber. In a calmer political and public environment, the Chamber PAC would likely have delayed this announcement and selected between a strong Democrat or Republican. Today's times demand leadership organizations, like the Detroit Regional Chamber, step outside conventional thinking and think boldly about how best to propel Michigan toward its real potential. The Chamber takes pride in its reputation as a bipartisan business organization, and the decision made by the Chamber PAC is a testament to that. » Visit MBN website: www.michiganbusinessnetwork.com/ » Subscribe to MBN's YouTube: www.youtube.com/@MichiganbusinessnetworkMBN » Like MBN: www.facebook.com/mibiznetwork » Follow MBN: twitter.com/MIBizNetwork/ » MBN Instagram: www.instagram.com/mibiznetwork/

Chris Holman welcomes Krista Johnson, Deputy Director for Workforce Development at Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity (LEO). June is Youth Employment Month in Michigan. With an estimated 260,500 young people ages 16 to 19 expected to join the workforce this summer, how is LEO preparing and supporting them as they take that step? What programs does LEO offer to help young people explore new opportunities and successfully find a job in today's workforce? Why is it important for Michigan to support youth in finding jobs and exploring career opportunities? Looking ahead, how does investing in youth employment today strengthen Michigan's workforce and economy in the future? » Visit MBN website: www.michiganbusinessnetwork.com/ » Watch MBN's YouTube: www.youtube.com/@MichiganbusinessnetworkMBN » Like MBN: www.facebook.com/mibiznetwork » Follow MBN: twitter.com/MIBizNetwork/ » MBN Instagram: www.instagram.com/mibiznetwork/ LANSING, Mich. — With an estimated 260,500 Michigan youth, ages 16-19, expected to participate in the state's workforce this summer, Gov. Gretchen Whitmer has proclaimed June 2025 as Youth Employment Month. The Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity (LEO) is celebrating this observance by helping more young people take their first steps into the workforce. “Helping young people succeed today means a stronger Michigan tomorrow,” said Susan Corbin, Director of LEO. “Young workers bring energy, new ideas and a willingness to learn. When given the opportunity, they grow into confident contributors who strengthen businesses and build more resilient communities. At the same time, employers benefit by filling talent gaps, fueling local economies, and developing the next generation of Michigan's workforce.” To support their career planning, youth are encouraged to explore Pathfinder – Michigan's free online resource for career and education exploration. By using current labor market trends, wage data and education metrics, Pathfinder helps young people build personalized roadmaps that connect them with career and education opportunities. LEO offers programs that promote equal access to career exploration and employment for youth with disabilities. Programs offered by the Bureau of Services for Blind Persons (BSBP) and Michigan Rehabilitation Services (MRS) include BSBP Pre-Employment Transition Services, BSBP Youth Low Vision Services and MRS Young Adult Services. MRS also provides training and technical support to businesses that host youth with disabilities during summer programs, helping to advance diversity, equity, inclusion and accessibility in the workplace. “LEO partners with employers, schools and community organizations to ensure youth gain hands-on experience in high-demand industries, build professional networks, and develop skills that will serve them for years to come,” said Stephanie Beckhorn, Deputy Director of LEO's Office of Employment and Training. “These early experiences lay the foundation for long-term success in the workforce.” Michigan is a leader in introducing creative and effective programs that help Michiganders and employers succeed. While servicing more workforce participants than any state in the U.S, Michigan is #3 in the nation and #1 in the Midwest in the percentage of workers added to the workforce. Building a strong workforce is essential to growing Michigan's middle class and ensuring everyone has the tools and resources they need to not just get by but live happy and successful lives. On May 29, Michigan's Wage and Hour Division together with the U.S. Department of Labor's Wage and Hour Division hosted a webinar to provide important youth employment information and answered questions for young job seekers, schools, parents and employers.

Extra cool? They will be doing two displays of this, one on July 3 with fireworks, and one on July 4 without, for our friends with sensory issues. Finally, we meet our new favorite guest, Ms. Wendy Woj, who is the first woman to be in charge of the Algonac Pickerel Festival happening July 3-6. The Senate may soon vote on a federal budget packed with President Trump’s priorities. The bill passed the house last month with major changes to Medicaid. Michigan’s Republican representatives argue these aren’t “cuts” – they say that they’re “protecting” Medicaid by removing “waste, fraud and abuse.” These changes, whatever you call them, could result in millions losing Medicaid coverage by 2027, according to estimates by the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office. Nearly two million Michiganders, including many people with disabilities, are enrolled in eMdicaid. State officials may be left with the choice to let many people lose coverage or make cuts elsewhere to cover losses in federal funding. A recent Lake Effect Poll by our friends from Progress Michigan reveals something we've already known: Many working class Michiganders don't get all that excited about the Mackinac Policy Conference. Ever feel the need to get away? Perhaps, to a galaxy far, far away? Michiganders did just this past May the 4th. Every year for two weekends a warehouse in Detroit’s Milwaukee Junction neighborhood gets converted into a Star Wars universe. A small army of do-it-yourself artists, makers, and fun-seekers transform a half-block of space into, well, outerspace. The detail is otherworldly – streetscapes closely resembling Tatooine (otherwise known as Luke Skywalker’s home planet), stucco storefronts, dust-covered tents, and cosplay Mandalorians decked with helmets, breastplates, and blaster pistols. Space Dive takes place atTangent Gallery, generally around May 4. There are still tickets available for this weekend’s events. Star Wars attire is mandatory, as declared by the Empire. GUESTS: John Dunivant, co founder of Space Dive Daniel Land, cofounder of Space Dive Eric Heerspink, Grand Rapids ceramist Check out photos from the event here. From her early years investigating extremist groups, to making Michigan's motor vehicle department a national model for government efficiency, Jocelyn has defied preconceived notions of what is possible in public service. A fearless advocate for Michigan, Jocelyn will bring accountability, people-driven solutions and a progressive vision for Michigan's future to make our state the best place to be a kid, raise a kid, stay, and call home. The daughter of two special education teachers and raised in a working-class family, her parents instilled the values of hard work, opportunity, and serving others. She took those values with her when, as a student at Wellesley College, she was the first college student ever to be elected to the governing body for the town of Wellesley, Massachusetts. After college, Jocelyn went to Alabama to investigate undercover domestic terrorist cells that had emerged following the Oklahoma City bombing, then to the United Kingdom where she studied the international links of modern, white supremacist and neo-Nazi movements, and finally to Detroit, where she continued her commitment of service and civil rights through a clerkship with the Honorable Damon J. Keith.  At 35 she was appointed dean of Wayne State University Law School, making her the youngest woman to lead an accredited law school in American history. As Dean she raised significant funds to ensure all students could pay for their education, lowered costs by freezing tuition and expanding scholarships, and built a team rooted in honesty, integrity, and service of people. As a result Wayne Law became one of the country's leading law schools. When Jocelyn became Secretary of State in 2019, she got to work on day 1 to make life easier for every Michigander. Under her leadership, operations at the Secretary of State's Office drastically improved, and the department went from having some of the longest wait times in the country to a model for state services. She eliminated wait times, created over 150 self-service stations to serve Michiganders in every corner of the state, all while implementing initiatives to make Michigan's elections the most secure and accessible in the nation. And, in the face of threats to both herself and her colleagues, Jocelyn oversaw two of the highest turnout and most transparent elections in the state's history. Jocelyn knows firsthand that the government only works well if it works for the people. “We did lots of infrastructure investments over the last handful of years to make sure our communities are in the best possible place they can be. And we complemented federal investment with workforce investment to ensure Michiganders are getting access to those kinds of roles, some of which didn't even exist previously. [This ensures] that Michigan communities could benefit from learning to be solar installers and get access to new economic income streams.” Hilary Doe on Electric Ladies Podcast The Justice Department is suing Michigan over its climate initiatives under the Clean Air Act. Michigan has the fastest-growing clean energy job sector in the U.S., with over 120,000 clean energy jobs. In addition, a recent study ranked Michigan at limited risk from climate change-related events, so it may attract millions of Americans who may relocate to escape extreme climate events. Listen to Hilary Doe, Michigan's first Chief Growth Officer (and the first in the country) on Electric Ladies Podcast with Joan Michelson. She describes how Michigan rapidly leveraged the Inflation Reduction Act to increase their climate resilience, economic growth and innovation. Now, Michigan is rated as one of the best places to live, work, raise a family and start a business. You'll hear about: Michigan's efforts to position itself as a climate-resilient and clean energy hub. The state's fast growing startup ecosystem and innovation centers, particularly in clean tech and mobility. The impact of climate change on businesses and the trend of "climate migration" to Michigan and the Midwest. Strategies for retaining and attracting talent, including new programs like "Make My Home". Plus, insightful career advice.  “Many folks start to experience frustration because they have built such a wealth of expertise and have so much to offer, but they might feel just stuck. In my experience, when I've been able to jump off that ladder and pursue something, a different context, a different platform, that lets me get unstuck. It's risky, but sometimes it just unlocks so much passion in an individual that to do exactly what you're meant to do and share all your gifts and be more successful than maybe you could have been in the other context.” Hilary Doe on Electric Ladies Podcast You'll also like: Tensie Whelan, Founding Director of NYU Stern on why sustainable business is good business.  Doreen Harris, President and CEO of NYSERDA, on how New York is leading the way to the clean energy future.
