It's so close to home and resonated so deeply as in the appropriate description of season four of The Suffering Podcast.  In this episode, Kevin Donaldson and Tom Flynn sit down in a retrospective look at the incredible highs, as well as the incredible lows. I wanted to take some time to talk about suffering because I know many of us are currently experiencing trials and tribulations that could easily undermine our faith and cause us to doubt the sovereignty and goodness of God. Suffering is hard. It can be exhausting and discouraging.  As believers must have a theology of suffering. In other words, we must know how to respond to suffering with faith. To know this, we have to be taught from the scriptures. Letting our faith impact our suffering changes everything and brings hope in the midst of what could otherwise destroy us. Today, Wes is back to talk about how believers should handle suffering. Multiple concussive blasts, while overseas in the army coupled with on the job injuries as a police officer have left Mike with a diagnosed traumatic brain injury. You have seen him numerous times on the show and the Hurricane has returned.Bobby Crudele comes from a family that has deep roots in Jersey City and Belleville and as a kid moved to North Arlington. Bobby has served honorably as a Sergeant in the North Arlington Police department and will finish his career with distinction this year.   His deep love of sports rose out of I growing up on the playground, spending most of his entire youth playing some sport every day continuing into adulthood.  A man whom we admire, Bobby has one of the most warped senses of humor and quickest of wits.  Strap in for a wild ride when Bobby comes to town.Find Bobby CrudeleWebsiteInstagramFacebookTwitterFind The Suffering PodcastThe Suffering Podcast InstagramKevin Donaldson InstagramMike Failace InstagramBuzzsproutApple PodcastSpotifyFacebookTikTokYouTubeThe Suffering Podcast FamilyDented Development ProjectToyota of HackensackBetterHelp Discount Code SufferingBella Dama CigarsSupport the showThe Suffering Podcast Instagram Kevin Donaldson Instagram TikTok YouTube

Matt Stanislao just wanted to be a cop. His father warned him, and after serving 27 years himself, he knew exactly what the problems Matt would face, which had nothing to do with the public or criminals. After two wrongful terminations rooted in discrimination for being gay, Matt fought back and won. However, he's not the same officer or the same person. In his near 3 year separation from the police department, he was accepted into Columbia University to earn a Masters in advanced clinical social work. After graduating and passing the Boards, he is now also a licensed social worker and chairs the Bergen County Board of a Mental Health. His workshops and film shorts reduce the stigma of asking for help and shows officers that psychotherapy isn't just for those with mental illness, arguably more for those that are suffering in silence. Advancedmediaproductionsllc.comThese are my recent film shorts I use in my workshops. https://youtu.be/32ColLYsF4Qhttps://youtu.be/cHFYNGJpD0chttps://youtu.be/0HBekto4yuMFind The Suffering PodcastThe Suffering Podcast InstagramKevin Donaldson InstagramMike Failace InstagramBuzzsproutApple PodcastSpotifyFacebookTikTokYouTubeThe Suffering Podcast FamilyDented Development ProjectToyota of HackensackBella Dama CigarsSupport the showThe Suffering Podcast Instagram Kevin Donaldson Instagram TikTok YouTube

The natural fear of vulnerability is tied to the survival instinct. However, this fear can also block intimacy in relationship. Working through the specific moments in time which caused this fear to begin is a painful but rewarding process for both partners. Unraveling the causes of fear takes into account many factors including cultural and intergenerational trauma. But the most important element to foster healing is open communication to create a safe space to be vulnerable. Mitchell Smolkin, a certified emotionally-focused couples therapist (EFT) and supervisor, Jungian psychoanalyst, published author, and experienced public speaker. He is also the host of “The Dignity of Suffering Podcast.” Mitchell is a trusted authority on relationships, trauma, parenting and emotional transitions. He spent his career helping people deal with life's various challenges through international practice. He has published works in the area of intergenerational trauma, specifically focusing on the ways in which we process grief, pain, and loss. Check out the transcript to this episode in Dr. Jessica Higgin's website. In this episode: 03:56 Introduction to Mitchell and EFT 07:24 Vulnerability in relationship is a particular skill that is practiced over a lifetime. 11:11 Cultural and intergenerational history are important contexts in the process of healing.  18:42 Vulnerability as a relational phenomena. Notice your first reactions to disconnection, name them, to track where the upset originates.  25:28 Hiding what you are feeling can't overwrite the nervous system. We have mirror neurons that actually anticipate partner's responses. 29:07 Just allowing another person can establish safety. However, being anti-social is tied to survival but this is terrible for intimacy. 35:26 How to discern between vulnerability and being afraid. Just talking about it with a professional creates the safety to get out of your cycles of fear. 44:01 Meaningful conversations need to happen in the right environments, as well as the right frames of mind. Partners are continuously learning how to make each other safe. 48:12 Connect with Mitchell Mentioned Mitchell Smolkin Website Mitchell Smolkin Instagram The Dignity of Suffering Podcast Connect with Dr. Jessica Higgins Facebook: facebook.com/EmpoweredRelationship  Instagram: instagram.com/drjessicahiggins  Podcast: drjessicahiggins.com/podcasts/ Pinterest: pinterest.com/EmpowerRelation  LinkedIn: linkedin.com/in/drjessicahiggins  Twitter: @DrJessHiggins  Website: drjessicahiggins.com   Email: jessica@drjessicahiggins.com If you have a topic you would like me to discuss, please contact me by clicking on the “Ask Dr. Jessica Higgins” button here.  Thank you so much for your interest in improving your relationship.  Also, I would so appreciate your honest rating and review. We need people in this world like our guest Steve (Redacted) to stay around and emerge when needed, to keep behind glass with a sign that reads "break glass in case of war."  Steve has had an amazing journey reaching his dreams and making it to the top of the mountain only to have it taken away by unforeseen events plunging him deep into hell.  Forever a warrior, Steve has crawled up from the darkness to join the light again.  This powerful and emotional journey is shared in detail during this Episode of The Suffering Podcast.Headstrong: Healing the Hidden Wounds of WarNational Suicide Prevention LifelineHours: Available 24 hours. We all have our own histories, challenges, and traumas that we bring with us into every relationship. When we begin new relationships, opening up is an exciting part of the journey of getting to know each other. It's easy to talk for hours, to find intimacy in a new connection with another person. But as we move further into our relationships, delving deeper into ourselves and our struggles can become more complex and can often cause roadblocks with our partners. Evenings spent in conversation turn into silent dinners or awkward fights that seem to be about nothing. Psychotherapist, author, and host of The Dignity of Suffering Podcast, Mitchell Smolkin sees these moments as opportunities for us to rewire the defense mechanisms that our brain has been conditioned to use. If we allow ourselves to be more vulnerable and share our past traumas, we will find greater fulfillment and intimacy in our relationships. Today Mitchell and I explore what it really means to lean in with your partner and why so many of us find it difficult to do. We discuss our own experiences with intimacy in relationships, including moments of success and moments where we failed to be present or empathetic. We discuss the power of the brain in creating habits and defense mechanisms from past pain or trauma and how we can move forward with more vulnerability despite these challenges. We also touch on the joy of creating a more profound connection in relationships and how unlearning bad habits can lead to greater intimacy and fewer feelings of loneliness. “The ability to come together, two people, and talk about disappointment - for me, that's actually strength.” - Mitchell Smolkin This week on Relationships! Let's Talk About It: The power of getting out of our comfort zones to create an opportunity for intimacy What it means to “lean in” with your partner The power of meeting your partner where they are How the arc of feeling vulnerable and being met with acceptance leads to a deeper connection Learning how to live through our past trauma so we can deal with future challenges How we can lean into our partner and share more of ourselves How intimacy can uncover old wounds and cause us to pull away or shut down The humbleness of witnessing someone else's struggles vs. the challenge of being truly vulnerable ourselves How our brains have been wire with habitual defenses that build walls within our relationships Being an emotionally supportive partner and taking joy in the power of that connection How “missed moments” with our partners can cause us to withdraw emotionally Connect with Mitchell Smolkin: Mitchell Smolkin Website The Dignity of Suffering Podcast Mitchell Smolkin on LinkedIn Mitchell Smolkin on Instagram Mitchell Smolkin on Facebook Mitchell Smolkin on YouTube Let's Talk About It!
