HDTGM all-star Jessica St. Clair helps the gang discuss the 2025 Spider-Man adjacent movie Kraven the Hunter starring Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Ariana DeBose, and the king of vague accents himself, Russell Crowe. LIVE from The Moody Theater in Austin, they go off on the Rhino's backpack, how Kraven is basically Dr. Dolittle with abs, Calypso's hot leather outfit, and if Russell Crowe gave off John Goodman vibes. Plus, June expresses her feelings on men in bathrobes and an audience member wonders if Tony Bennett was in this movie. Our host Lewis checks in this week from the Home of the Blues, Memphis, Tennessee! We're recording this week's episode in the parking lot of Sun Studios. Sun Studios has produced some legendary, great music. Countless hits. Midterm elections were this week and all the news coverage of it has been people standing in line. Even though people are standing in line to vote, our host reminds you that you need to give people a reason to vote! One political party comes up with solutions they can't explain. The other political party wants to keep their good ideas a secret. It's important to vote. It matters. Lewis is sick of people saying that George Carlin didn't vote. How do you know that to be true? He could just be saying that because he's George and he is a comedian! But then again, voting probably did genuinely bother him a lot. Lewis had an extra day to spend some time in Memphis. If he's being honest, he ordered enough BBQ to feed a family of six. Also, if you're ever in Memphis, you need to visit the civil rights museum. It will be one of the most extraordinary experiences you can ever have. It's crazy that they don't want to teach about civil rights history in school. Kids need to learn about this.  Our host's next stops in his tour are in Georgia and North Carolina. As always, our host reminds us that we take care of each other. It's the most important thing we can do for one another.  This week's live rants were filmed at Austin City Limits at the Moody Theater in Austin, Texas and the Majestic Theater in Dallas, Texas.  For advertising opportunities email: advertise@thelaughbutton.com  SUBMIT RANTS TO LEWIS https://www.lewisblack.com/live Lewis' Grammy-nominated special, "Thanks For Risking Your Life" is available now! https://tlbrecords.lnk.to/LewisWE SUBSCRIBE TO THE RANTCAST https://www.lewisblacksrantcast.com https://thelaughbutton.podlink.to/Ran... Latest Uvalde developments: Governor Greg Abbott has ordered the Texas House and Senate to convene special legislative committees to address school and gun safety in the wake of last week's school shooting in Uvalde, but stopping short of calling for a full special session of the Legislature. Texas State Senator Roland Gutierrez, whose jurisdiction includes Uvalde, has accused Governor Abbott of attempting to "bamboozle" grieving locals with empty promises of legislative action. Five people remained hospitalized with injuries suffered in the shooting as of Wednesday, including a 10 year old girl who remains in serious condition. The Girl Scouts have posthumously honored shooting victim Amerie Jo Garza with its Bronze Cross, which is granted to members who display life-threatening heroism. A Wednesday night mobile home fire in north Austin has claimed the life of a young child. The City of Austin has filed a challenge with the U.S. Census Bureau, contesting the count in the most recent census in 2020 - we are the largest U.S. city so far to do so. The Austin Police Department is pushing for the reinstatement of automated license plate readers, or ALPR's - a tool that was suspended alongside budgetary modifications following the George Floyd protests in 2020. Meanwhile, five APD officers facing indictments over their use of force during those protests are suing the city, saying the “less than lethal” rounds employed during the demonstrations were defective, and that they were insufficiently trained in their use. TXDOT has begun an extensive project to remove those pesky stoplights from part of Loop 360. The criminal justice org Mano Amiga reports it has reached the necessary number of petition signatures to force a local vote on marijuana decriminalization in San Marcos. Texas French Bread announces its return, at first with sales via local farmers markets. The future of the historic building on 29th Street, largely destroyed by fire, remains uncertain. Texas Longhorns Men's Golf has won a national championship - its first NCAA title since 2012. Weekend live music features a boatload of interesting road shows: Friday includes The Mavericks at ACL Live at the Moody Theater, The Warlocks at Hotel Vegas, The Suffers and Emily Wells at the Parish, Night Drive at the Far Out Lounge, and KUTX's Rock The Park show witih Joe McDermott and Sir Woman at Mueller Lake Park. Saturday shows: Whores at the Parish, Diane Coffee at the Mohawk, and Symphony X at Empire Control Room. On Sunday, Steely Dan plays ACL Live, Lawrence and Misterwives are at Stubb's, and Lunar Vacation is at the Parish. Meanwhile, Panic! At The Disco will kick off their upcoming world tour with a show at Austin's Moody Center on September 8. And after a couple of cooler days with decent rain chances, "Mama Nature gets rude" - a string of potentially record-setting triple-digit days is on the way next week.

The school shooting at Uvalde has left behind unbelievable grief and shock across Texas. Some families of victims were made to wait hours before being told of their child's condition. President Biden is calling for new gun control action, while Texas Republicans are calling for more Texans to be armed and trained, as several prominent GOP leaders plan to appear at the NRA's annual convention in Houston this weekend - historically, mass shootings have resulted in a fewer gun restrictions in Texas, not more. Austinites are urged to not only make a blood donation, but to become a new regular blood donor - and to be sure to confirm the legitimacy of any online crowdfunding effort before giving. The November ballot is now set following yesterday's runoff election: incumbent Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton will face Democratic challenger Rochelle Garza, incumbent Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick gets a rematch with Democrat Mike Collier, and incumbent State Comptroller Glenn Hegar will be challenged by Democrat Janet Dudding. For Texas Land Commissioner, Republican Dawn Buckingham will face Democrat Jay Kleberg. Incumbent Railroad Commissioner Wayne Christian survived his runoff and will be challenged by Democrat Luke Warford. A noted runoff in the San Antonio area between incumbent U.S. Representative Henry Cuellar and challenger Jessica Cisneros remains too close to call this morning, though Cuellar has declared victory. The father of Kaitlin Marie Armstrong, still at large and wanted in the shooting death of pro cyclist Anna Moriah Wilson, is speaking out in her defense. After mulling the issue for a short additional time, Travis County health officials have declared a public health crisis over recent increases in local drug-related emergency calls and deaths. In the wake of several injuries and fatalities, Austin's Downtown Commission is considering stricter regulation of rental scooters. An uptick in local COVID cases is preceding the upcoming holiday weekend. Meanwhile, ABIA is predicting its busiest Memorial Day weekend ever. Dates have been announced for this year's Austin Restaurant Weeks event, a city-wide fundraiser that will benefit the Central Texas Food Bank: September 1 - 11. Robert Earl Keen, set to retire from public performance after a farewell run, has announced a "World Tour of Texas", which will include shows this August at the KOKE Fest, Gruene Hall, and ACL Live at the Moody Theater. Texas Baseball begins Big 12 Tournament play - and has a chance at revenge against Oklahoma State, who dealt the Horns a sweep less than a month ago - this morning in Arlington. Their tournament performance will have major implications for the upcoming regionals.

Confusing metrics between national and local sources regarding COVID spread in the Austin area seem to indicate a lot of new cases recently, but not many new hospitalizations. A historic moment for Austin FC - they've topped the MLS Western Conference after beating standing #1 LAFC in Los Angeles last night, 2-1. Austin FC will play Orlando City at home this Sunday. In spite of polling showing huge approval numbers for marijuana legalization in Texas, Governor Greg Abbott says he won't support it. Austin ISD Superintendent Stephanie Elizalde, on the job for almost two years, may not be around for long - she's the last remaining candidate for the same job with Dallas ISD. The San Antonio Spurs have received approval from Bexar County officials to move a handful of next season's games out of San Antonio - one likely location is Austin's Moody Center. Texas Longhorns Baseball hosts its last Big 12 series of the season this weekend as Kansas comes to town, starting Friday - after which we'll know what's in store for the Horns at the beginning of the post-season as the Phillips 66 Big 12 Championship starts next Wednesday at Globe Life Field in Arlington. Weekend live music: Friday sees the second night of The Eagles at the Moody Center, Phoebe Bridgers in a sold-out show at the Moody Amphitheater at Waterloo Park, and DJ Baauer at The Venue ATX on East 6th Street. Saturday shows include Bright Eyes at ACL Live at the Moody Theater, Bleachers at Stubb's who'll be there on Sunday too - also Sunday, Daryl Hall and the Daryl's House Band at ACL Live. And, Echo and the Bunnymen have announced an Austin show, also at ACL Live at the Moody Theater on August 20 - tickets go on sale tomorrow. Hot, dry weather is taking a toll on Austin's drinking water supply - Lake Travis is now at its lowest level in almost four years. However, as weirdly warm as this May has been lately, we've still not breached the 100-degree barrier, and we're also beyond May 4, which is the earliest 100-degree day in Austin on record. And, following a couple more days of scorching heat, we now have the return of Saharan dust to look forward to on Monday.

Stir Crazy With Steve Jenkins: Conversations With Creatives During The Quarantine

My guest this week is Nigel Hall-an amazing singer/keyboard player/multi-instrumentalist.Born and raised in Washington D.C. and currently residing in New Orleans, LA. Lettuce's keyboardist/vocalist Nigel Hall is an accomplished musician steeped in Gospel tradition, as well as classic soul, funk, hip hop and R&B. Hall was discovered by Lettuce co-founder Ryan Zoidis around 2007, who invited him to Brooklyn to meet Eric Krasno and record with jazz band Soulive. Nigel was a huge fan of Soulive and this was a major moment for his young career. At that same time Hall connected with Lettuce drummer Adam Deitch and The Roots drummer/founder Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson, and soon began appearing onstage with Soulive, Lettuce, and Royal Family affiliates. Nigel Hall was first nominated for a Grammy for his work on Ledesi's 2009 LP Turn Me Loose. In 2011, Hall decamped to New Orleans to immerse himself in the Crescent City's musical heritage. It was in NOLA where Hall was drafted by Jon Cleary for his band, and appears on the NOLA pianist's Grammy-winning LP Go-Go Juice. Hall toured with Robert Randolph and the Family Band, John Scofield, and briefly with Tedeschi-Trucks Band, before he was chosen as a keyboardist/vocalist for Warren Haynes Band. Hall appears on Warren Haynes Band's studio album Man in Motion and live LP Live at the Moody Theater, released on Stax Records. Hall appears on the Grammy nominated Family Dinner Vol.1 from Snarky Puppy, as well as Grammy-nominated album from New Orleans own Cha Wa. Hall has also appeared onstage with Marcus King, Pretty Lights, Dave Matthews Band, and more. In 2012, Hall co-founded The Nth Power, a funk/soul/R&B band with former Beyonce drummer Nikki Glaspie. In 2015 Hall departed The Nth Power and soon released Nigel Hall Band's critically acclaimed debut Ladies & Gentleman... A Bonnaroo 2013 performance saw Hall share the stage with the likes of Chaka Khan, Willie Weeks, James Gadsden, Derek Trucks, Susan Tedeschi, Solange, members of the Wu-Tang Clan, Anthony Hamilton, SchoolBoy Q, DJ Jazzy Jeff, Chance the Rapper, and Thundercat. As a solo artist, Hall has been nominated for the New Orleans Offbeat awards, won New Orleans Big Easy Award, and has been a featured solo artist at New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival for five consecutive years. Hall will be performing at New Orleans’ Essence Music Festival for the first time in July 2019. Nigel Hall joined Lettuce as a full-time keyboardist and vocalist in 2015. Hall is featured on Lettuce's forthcoming fifth full-length LP ELEVATE, due in June 2019. Nigel and I talk about all kinds of stuff including where he came from, what his favorite Christmas song is, All kinds of music stuff, and the importance of living your truth and being who you are. This is one of my favorite episodes yet and I think you’ll like it also. We talked yesterday and here’s how our conversation went.

Jakob Dylan has been playing music for more than 30 years, touring all over the world and winning two Grammys with his band The Wallflowers. He’s released two solo albums and most recently he collaborated with his longtime manager Andrew Slater on the film and project called Echo in the Canyon, which celebrates the music that came out of LA’s Laurel Canyon in the mid-1960s. Jakob’s been surrounded by music his entire life, but that doesn’t make it any easier when you sit down alone to write a song. In this conversation Jakob and I talk a lot about his songwriting process, where inspiration comes from & why we both think it’s important to share encouragement with others. Jakob and I spoke somewhere in the basement of ACL Live at the Moody Theater, located off of Willie Nelson Blvd in Austin.

The course is taught in more than 75 countries globally and has been translated into more than 25 languages. Teal teaches all over the U.S. and Latin America in English and Spanish. She's passionate about helping people achieve their goals and dreams and increasing the amount of compassion, personal responsibility and service to others in the world by guiding people through The Avatar Course. In the business world, Teal has used the Avatar Tools to create everything from having her songs as a singer, songwriter, guitarist featured on Warner Brothers and Paramount Pictures TV Shows and Soundtracks, to helping to launch Austin City Limits Live at The Moody Theater (a $40 million concert venue in Austin, Texas) as the Executive Producer of the in-house Production Company, to helping to brand and launch the LIVESTRONG campaign to global success and consulting with Fortune 500 companies on strategies to grow their businesses to the next level. In our conversation with Teal, she unpacks the steps for creating success, including the starting point for success, how to know if your goals are right for you, and understanding your belief blueprint and the role that beliefs have on your ability to achieve success.  She shares how she transformed her own beliefs from playing in coffee shops and having writers block to writing four songs in one week, and having her songs shared with nine major record labels. Teal then guides us through a Sticky Attention Exercise, where we discover where our attention naturally goes and how to recover our self-determinism. We end our chat discussing the Compassion Project, designed to increase the amount of compassion in the world. The Compassion Project cards, created by the Founder of the Avatar Course, have been translated into 34 languages, and distributed to over 5.9 million people worldwide. To obtain copies of these cards, contact Teal Thompson at www.tealthompson.com. Key Takeaways 1) The starting point for success is knowing where you're headed and having clear goals that are right for you. 2) Harry Palmer's Three Life Inventory – 3 key questions to ask yourself: What do you want? What would you have to become to get that? Is your attitude toward that goal working for you or against you? 3) First discover your belief blueprint, then you can decide whether your beliefs are working for you or not. 4) Becoming aware of your transparent beliefs cause them to lose their power over you. 5) Sticky Attention Exercise – the objective is to explore the behavior of your own attention and the expected results are insights and some recovery of self-determinism. 6) Our attention helps us solidify our reality. Where are we putting our attention? 7) Compassion Project & Exercise – designed to increase the amount of compassion in the world. 5.9 cards translated into 34 different languages (order cards at www.tealthompson.com)   Additional Resources Book a complementary Avatar Info Hour Compassion Project Cards Connect With Teal Thompson Website: https://www.tealthompson.com (available in English and Spanish) Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/tealthompson Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/creatinglifedeliberately

Welcome to episode 16 of The Bitcoin Game, I'm Rob Mitchell. I was excited to talk to Bruce Fenton at the recent Texas Bitcoin Conference. It was a fun conversation, and I think it gives a good sense of Bruce as a person. He answered my questions about the exclusive Satoshi Roundtable Bitcoin retreat he organized, and filled me in about his impressive background in financial management. Our interview concluded with passionate exposition by Bruce. Note that we spoke before Bruce was voted in by the Bitcoin Foundation Board as their new Executive Director. I also spoke with Scott Rose, who I was familiar with from his popular comedic video series, "Shit Bitcoin Fanatics Say." Scott's background as an actor and a hired speaker for Apple, combined with his passion for Bitcoin, makes him a great cryptocurrency proponent. This is demonstrated in his recent Austin Nerd Night presentation called "Bitcoin 101: What Happens When We Decentralize Money?". I often think Bitcoin needs better P.R., and Scott did his part with this presentation. If you wonder why you hear traffic in the background, most of my interviews from this conference took place in the patio area outside of the Moody Theater. This is where the exhibiter's booths were located, and also where most people congregated when they weren't watching presentations. Thanks to Christian Burns (https://twitter.com/ChristianBurns) for the photo taken while I was interviewing Bruce Fenton.
