The Montreal punk band Nobro is up for rock album of the year at the Junos Awards later this month. Lead singer and bass player Kathryn McCaughey joins Tom Power to share the story behind Nobro's song “Where My Girls At” off their Juno-nominated album.
In this episode of East Coast DNA, we sit down with Customer Service—Owen, Nick, Matt, and Max—to discuss their 2024 debut EP, Live More Forever, and how they've been shaping their sound in the indie rock world.
Wine bar hosts monthly open mic Along with Beaklyn, Baby Brooklyn and Brooklyn North (aka BroNo or NoBro), Beacon recently acquired another nickname: Broadway North. Singers gotta sing and there's enough critical mass that the Broadway in Beacon open mic fills Reserva Wine Bar on Main Street each month with a raucous crowd raring to revel in musical theater - tap dancing included. "There's been a real shift in work-life balance and theater folks don't have to suffer for their art anymore by living in tiny boxes," said co-host and pianist Will Reynolds. "People try out for Broadway shows from all over the country [virtually] and, if they get the part, they move. We in Beacon don't have to relocate." Jen Malenke devised the idea for a Broadway satellite after attending an event at Reserva at which the performer invited people to come onstage and sing. Malenke took inspiration from Manhattan piano bars that allow singers to hand their sheet music to an in-house accompanist and put over one tune. In Beacon, that pianist is Reynolds, who pulls off the task well. "I know 60 to 70 percent of the songs," he said. "The rest, I'm just going for it." The evening unfolds with an element of improvisation. Though the hosts map out the pace, they will shift acts on the fly. "We alternate the ballads with the up-tempo songs and also mix young people with older folks," said Malenke. "We don't want four ringers in a row, so we spread them out. We have these tentpole moments, but we're storytelling and don't want to stay in one mood forever." After an opening number, Act 2 kicks off with a Mad Libs, which takes a beloved number and recasts key words in the lyrics (often in ribald fashion). Everyone belts out the final version. Last month, Reynolds performed a localized take of "On Broadway," by The Drifters, that referenced the waterfall, the dummy light and climbing Mount Beacon, "but just don't go on the weekend / because the city folk will all be there." He conducted folks to echo the phrase "in Beacon" after the main "on Broadway" refrain. During the show, Malenke zipped around as MC and cheerleader. Beyond doling out high-fives, she joined the harmony parts, adjusted the microphone mid-song for performers, turned sheet music pages and handed Reynolds glasses of white wine (which he kept by his feet). She also sang two tunes and introduced the month's special guest: Rueby Wood, a fellow cast member from the first national tour of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory that began in 2018. Truth be told, booze lubricates much of the revelry. Reserva "is usually closed Wednesdays, but this is one of their highest revenue nights," said Malenke. "The best thing is that local people can walk home." Joanne Tetteris, who lives in Beacon, dressed like a performer but didn't sing. "It's nice to be able to see something local like this on a weeknight," she said. Ken Martinez and Janet Rossbach came from Newburgh. "I laughed a lot, and it was a phenomenally good night out," said Martinez. "I didn't think they'd be this good." On the small stage by the door, Connor Bond and Ali Grieb improvised a ditty about gonorrhea and falling in love at Target. "It was everything I dreamed of and more," said Malenke from the wings. "I'm crying over here." In between an appearance by Mylee Rose, a high school student from Lagrangeville, and ringer Carrie Gibson, who held out her last note for dramatic effect, Gianna Cusato pulled on tap shoes and shuffled her feet to "I Got Rhythm." Shooting sideways glances at the music stand and sometimes closing her eyes during a rendition of "She Used to Be Mine," by Sara Bareilles, speech therapist Daria Gates, whose office is down the block, nailed the high note at the end and sent the audience into a frenzy. Brian Waite, who performed "No Time at All" from Pippin and received raucous applause, thanked the crowd and joked that "it's nice to be in Beacon, the heart of Broadway." Reserva Wine Bar is located at 173 Main St. The next ...

Remember that scene in “Say Anything” when John Cusak stands outside the window of the woman who has just dumped him, holding a boombox playing “In Your Eyes”? In this episode, Cynthia and Josie share their strange and terrifying experiences with stalkers. They also chat with Julie S. Lalonde, women's rights advocate and author of Resilience is Futile: The Life and Death and Life of Julie S. Yo! The Road The Stage is here... for you. All the time. Patrick Bateman and Peter Michaels found themselves on opposite ends of a ZOOM call - so they talked some stuff. Vancouver, Montreal, Jack White, Formula 1, NOBRO and the OBGMs. Just a chill conversation! This is the kind of thing that happens A LOT. We sign on to talk to a guest, discover there's some sort of technical or scheduling issue and BOOM - the PP Crew sits silently without an interviewee. So we decided not keep it silent this time and GUESS WHAT? It was fun. Stay tuned for another great guest on The Road The Stage next week! “I wanted to be in the most kick-ass all-female band ever.” It's time to live your truth and shred some gnar with Nobro - one of the more talented up-and-coming punk outfits in the modern era. We are joined by the band's founder and frontwoman Kathryn McCaughey in today's episode of IUF. From marking their first big-stage performance back at the WayHome Festival in 2017, Kathryn and her bandmates have been through plenty in recent years which required much dedication to their trade of playing the music they love. Now that the band is finally seeing results and receiving recognition due to the hard work put in, Kathryn stays humble and keeps the focus on building on this momentum. The new EP, “Live Your Truth Shred Some Gnar” will bring a smile to the face of many within the punk rock/metal community – as the record pays homage to the sounds of the 80s and 90s punk rock elements. With uniqueness in the compositions of everything that Nobro is about, the whole Punks Not Dead notion has a whole different meaning. “Live Your Truth Shred Some Gnar” is the hard-earned beginning of a bright chapter of a young all-female band ready to make waves. Tune in now with our conversation with Kathryn McCaughey and do not miss the newest EP from this Montreal-based punk band with an attitude unmatched, out now everywhere via Dine Alone Records.Stay connected with Nobro, visit: https://nobroband.com/, https://www.facebook.com/nobrocity, and https://www.instagram.com/nobromusic/Stay connected with IUF, visit: https://interviewunderfire.com/

We had the pleasure of interviewing NOBRO over Zoom video! Montreal's fierce rock quartet NOBRO released a new single "Better Each Day" via Dine Alone Records, mixed by two-time Grammy Award-winning engineer Dave Schiffman (Vampire Weekend, Adele). The anthemic track kicks off with the powerful set of vocals — "I spend my whole life running away…" — before culminating into the pounding drums, shredding riffs, and blistering vocals that NOBRO have become known for. A video directed and produced by Jeremy Shantz, Jenn Wade, and Daniel Esteban, and shot in the band's hometown of Montreal, will be released on October 13."I was experiencing some kind of crisis at the time of writing 'Better Each Day,' and if I remember correctly, it was a 'writing music' one," reflects vocalist and bassist Kathryn McCaughey. "There are times when songs come streaming out of you as though they wrote themselves into existence, and other times it can be as challenging as getting two purebred Persian cats to mate. I was sitting in our producer's studio when he suggested I might like a little jingle he wrote for a commercial that never got used. I thought it was dope and voila, this song was born. One day, you're punk as fuck, and the next, you're playing old unused car commercial jingles." New tour dates have been announced for NOBRO, who join Tokyo Police Club in the U.S. this November, then Billy Talent in 2022 for 10 dates across Canada.Featuring McCaughey's confident, cocky yell and blistering bass lines, Sarah Dion's signature backbone drums (McCaughey claims drummer Sarah Dion will "go down in history as one of the best drummers in the entire world"), killer riffs from guitarist Karolane Carbonneau, and sweeping keyboard licks and bongo solos from master of percussion Lisandre Bourdages, NOBRO have become a rock 'n' roll force to be reckoned with."I wanted to play this type of music but there wasn't a lot of women who wanted to play it. I wanted to be in the most kick-ass all-female band ever," says McCaughey. Resilient and tough, NOBRO are aware that they will face skepticism as part of the omnipresent sexism in the scene they inhabit, but that only spurs them on. "We said we would do it one way, and so we made sure that we were always doing it that way," she continues.McCaughey founded the band almost as a challenge to herself when the aftermath of a relationship with a prominent Montreal musician made her determined to be "more than just a footnote on this person's Wikipedia page." She realized she possessed all the tools to express herself in her own voice and to shape her own destiny. All that was needed were fellow musicians who felt the same. As fate has it, they were all nearby shaping their own destiny, mastering their instruments, ready to shred as hard as they could, and were ignited when they found each other. With co-writes with members of METZ and Fast Friends under their belts, as well as an EP titled Sick Hustle released in 2020 on Dine Alone Records, NOBRO are well on their way to achieving their goal. Their music video for "Don't Die," animated by Greg Doble, amassed a number of accolades including: Best Short Animation at Monster Flix Awards, Best Music Video at Hollywood Horror Fest, Best Music Video at Another Hole In The Head, Best Horror Music Video at Horror Bowl Movie Awards, Silver Award at Los Angeles Animation Film Festival, and Honorable Mention at Santiago Horror. Inspired by the likes of Jay Reatard, The Damned, and Royal Trux to name a few, NOBRO are unafraid to wear their influences on their sleeve. They cut their teeth on the road with bands like FIDLAR, PUP, and Charly Bliss, and more recently played their biggest venues to date on an arena tour with Alexisonfire and The Distillers. Call them punk rock if you like, but its long-held perceptions are just some of the things NOBRO are here to challenge — in the loudest and most exciting way possible. We want to hear from you! On this week’s show, we travel to Canada to speak with musician, festival founder, and renaissance man Guilhem Martinez. I first met Guilhem in Florida and, after speaking to each other for a bit, we discovered we may have previously crossed paths earlier in Scotland at Dundee’s Book Yer Ane Fest. Guilhem, casually mentioned he helped to produce a similar festival in Canada that I should come play sometime. I later discovered it was the highly lauded Pouzza Fest that I’d been hearing about for years. In this episode we discuss Pouzza Fests’ humble beginnings and how, unassumingly, Guilhem helped turn it into one of the most highly respected festivals in the punk community. We also talk about the difference between French and English speaking punk bands and learn more about Montreal. Today we hear music from Yesterday's Ring and NOBRO from Canada and Jeff Rosenstock from New York City.
