Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Anti-'FOOM' (stop trying to make your cute pet name the thing), published by david reinstein on April 14, 2023 on The Effective Altruism Forum. Notes/basis: This is kind of a short-form post in style but I think it's important enough to put here. Obviously let me know if someone else said this better Summary Formal overly-intellectual academese is bad. But using your 'cute' inside joke name for things is potentially worse. It makes people cringe, sounds like you are trying to take ownership of something, and excludes people. Use a name that is approachable but serious. The problem. Where did the term 'FOOM' come from, to refer to AGI risk? I asked GPT4: [!ai] AI The term 'foom' was coined by artificial intelligence researcher and author Eliezer Yudkowsky in his 2008 book titled "The Sequences". Yudkowsky used the term to refer to a hypothetical scenario where an artificial general intelligence (AGI) rapidly and exponentially improves its own intelligence, leading to an uncontrollable and potentially catastrophic outcome for humanity. The term 'foom' is a play on the word 'boom', representing the sudden and explosive nature of AGI development in this scenario. Another example: 'AI-not-kill-everyone-ism' Analogies to fairly successful movements: Global warming was not called ''Roast", and the movement was not called "anti-everyone-burns-up-ism" Nuclear holocaust was not called "mega-boom" Anti-slavery was not called ... (OK I won't touch this one) How well has the use of cute names worked in the past? I can't think of any examples where they have caught on in a positive way. The closest I can think of are "Nudge" (by Richard Thaler?) ... to describe choice-architecture interventions; - My impression is that the term 'nudge' got people to remember it but made it rather easy to dismiss others in that space have come up with names that caught on less well I think (like "sludge"), which also induce a bit of cringe "Woke" I think this example basically speaks for itself. Tea-Party movement This goes in the opposite direction perhaps (fairly successful), but I still think it's not quite as cringeworthy as FOOM. The term 'tea party' obviously has a long history in our culture, especially the "Boston Tea Party. What else? I asked GPT4 when have social movements used cute 'inside joke' names to refer to the threats faced? The suggestions are not half as cute or in-jokey as FOOM: Net Neutrality, The Umbrella Movement, Extinction Rebellion (XR), Occupy Wall Street (OWS) I asked it to get cuter... [1] Prodding it further... Climategate, Frankenfoods, Slacktivism ... also not so inside-jokey nor as cringeworthy IMO. Prodding it for more cutesy more inside-jokey yields a few terms that barely caught on, or didn't characterize the movement or the threat as a whole.[2] Thanks for listening. This episode: Certain nectar-dwelling bacteria can induce pollen to germinate to access their tasty proteins! Download Episode (6.0 MB, 8.8 minutes) Show notes: Microbe of the episode: Clostridium oceanicum News item Takeaways Nectar in flowers seems like it would be a great place for microbes to live, since it has so much sugar, but it's actually somewhat difficult to thrive solely in and on nectar. The carbon in sugar is only one essential element for life, and there's enough of it that it can be overwhelming to the osmotic balance of many microbes. Pollen could provide more nutrients in the form of protein and the nitrogen that comes with it, but it is difficult to penetrate its hard shell. In this study, certain kinds of bacteria that live in nectar were able to access more pollen protein than other microbes by inducing pollen to germinate, growing out of its shell, or burst and release the protein directly. These microbes only benefited from pollen that were still alive and able to germinate, and not from those that had been disabled. Journal Paper: Christensen SM, Munkres I, Vannette RL. 2021. What happens when a Subway foot-long sandwich is only 11 inches long? There’s a class action lawsuit for that. In recent years, high-profile class action settlements have been criticized for delivering little to no monetary relief to plaintiffs — instead, providing coupons, injunctive relief or “cy pres” relief in which the defendant makes charitable donations — while making large fee awards to attorneys. On the latest episode of the ABA Banking Journal Podcast — sponsored by Reich and Tang Deposit Solutions — class action expert Ted Frank discusses recent trends in class litigation. As founder of the Hamilton Lincoln Law Institute and its Center for Class Action Fairness, Frank discusses his efforts to object to settlements that deliver insufficiently for consumers — and how these efforts have helped to reduce frivolous lawsuits by making it harder for plaintiffs attorneys to get big fee awards. He also discusses the value of arbitration for consumers compared to class actions, as well as the role of shareholder strike suits in mergers and acquisitions.

This has been a virtual week from hell in terms of covering the corona virus from a Northwest Georgia angle. That’s not a whine; that’s part of what we do in journalism: Go all out to get the story and to get the story right. We can sleep next week. Emails. Texts. Prodding phone calls. Cover up allegations from the High Court of Facebook. Trusted sources reading responses so scripted that you knew what he or she was saying before the fourth word came out of their mouths. And perhaps most shocking: Through all its faults, we’re waking up this morning to discover some of those social media posters on Facebook had it right. What some key players in all of this have forgotten is the bottom line: The best way to quell misinformation is with information. Cold, hard facts delivered as they’re confirmed and not whipped through some state policy or public relations team. Meanwhile, the Facebook community is celebrating something new to many of them: A level of credibility. The handling of this particular case has done just that. And that’s enough to make us sick on more levels than we care to discuss today. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/john-druckenmiller/support

When people give lip service to “I’m sorry,” it loses its meaning. In fact, some people put a lot of weight on it. For the words to mean something, they need to come with ownership and self-responsibility. Prodding someone doesn’t feel good, and neither does someone wanting an apology from you that you don’t feel inclined to give. You can’t force a meaningful apology out of someone, so if you’re trying to do this, ask yourself why. This happens a lot with breakups. If you’re devastated over the end of your relationship, you may want your ex to acknowledge your pain and say they are sorry for what they’ve done to you. You believe this will give you a sense of closure, but you’re putting an awful lot of importance on words that may be empty, which won’t make you feel any better. Sorry is meaningless without self-responsibility and you can’t force someone to own the wrong you feel they’ve done (especially if they feel differently). Instead, look for where you can take responsibility in the situation and why you feel owed—what do you think it will do for you? When you own your role, you become less dependent on empty apologies.

The world's largest telecommunications-equipment company, China's Huawei, is suing the US government. But the suit isn't just about US law. It's part of Huawei's larger campaign to defend its role as a global provider of telecom gear amid fears that its technology is or could be used by the Chinese government for spying. In essence, Huawei is challenging the US government to prove its suspicions.
Today we are joined by two smokin' hot and talented girls! The great Marnie and Lauren join us from across the pond and thankfully they have never listened to our podcast before. We have fun with their accents, talk about British words that make no sense in America, and they give advice about how to pick up chicks online. They share some of the craziest dates they have gone on and read us some DMs that have slid in from out of nowhere. Key Takeaways: [2:48] Connor is really good at eating! Lauren fancies herself a great eater but she was surprised just how much Connor can wolf down. [5:52] The ladies do a great job of their individual takes of reading The Adonyx Podcast intro. [9:19] When Marnie isn't competing in shows, she is in biomedical sciences and is all up in the world of PreMed for disease and pathology. [14:19] Lauren started with fitness coaching then moved to create her Online Fitness Business School. She also runs an accelerated program that helps others build their business with a hands-on approach. [15:22] Marnie was on the Fitness Cruise that Connor went on, and they were surprised at how many other influencers were there. Everyone had a great time and it was super fun to collab while on a boat and docked at beautiful locations. [19:07] Yes, Harry Potter might run again for Prime Minister. [19:30] Love (the movie) isn't based on a true story, that they know of. [23:09] The ladies feel that British girls tend to like guys that act more like gentlemen than American girls do. Marnie is single and ready to mingle, and can't wait to move to the U.S. to start dating here. [33:30] Pro tip: no prodding girls at the gym. Say hi, and don't be a creep. [34:12] The girls give some advice for hooking up via Instagram. Dos include: following, commenting and replying to stories. The Don'ts: spamming them, writing too often, or commenting on everything. [36:28] Think of dating like a sales transaction, and the FaceTime is the initial sales call to put everyone at ease. The more you know you aren't being catfished, the less likely you are to flaking. [45:31] Be like Connor when you get catfished. Be nice, kind, but leave as soon as you can. [53:27] You have to have the right balance between being sick and funny. The optimal pickup line is a little bit of both. This episode starts with a Nature Walk, featuring Who's That Bird, non-bird edition, possibly round 4. T-Bone's dog previous success has him well ahead, maybe. Warren plays the sound of a nonbird, and each of us has to guess what the nonbird looks like, what it's trying to communicate, and provide the collective term for it. We each take a guess, which is as non-illuminating as usual. However, the correct answer sets off a real flood of interest in the water economy of the animals in question. Trust me, this is weirder and more interesting than it sounds, provided it doesn't sound very interesting to you. If you have any experience with unconventional sources of water, send us an email to tell us about it (maskedman@limitedappeal.net). The most common expectation would-be followers of God possess, I think, is that if we are faithful to God we will be protected, rescued, defended, upheld, showered with blessings. The morally and Scripturally bankrupt “prosperity Gospel” preached by Joel Osteen and others is all about this idea—the idea that wealth, possessions are a sign of God’s favor, God’s reward for being a fabulous person. But from a Biblical perspective this is absolutely bonkers—I can’t recall reading about a single person who received public acclaim, wealth, power or prestige from living into his or her call. Prodding or dragging the world towards God’s dream is hard work and it does not come with a fancy sign up bonus. Fighting for justice for all people, fighting the forces of evil and hate, takes courage, it takes a realistic assessment of what you are signing up for. It takes the willingness to let go of the idea of reward—that we are owed anything for living into God’s dream.
