Welcome back to Bad Dads Film Review, where today we're delving into the murky waters of moral ambiguity with the riveting (?!) drama, Pain Hustlers.Pain Hustlers takes us into the heart of the opioid crisis, a topic as timely as it is troubling. This isn't just a story about drug sales; it's a tale of desperation, ambition, and the American Dream gone awry.Liza Drake, played by Emily Blunt, is a single mother grappling with financial instability. Her world turns upside down when she lands a high-paying job selling OxyContin for a pharmaceutical startup. But as the company's unethical practices escalate, Liza is caught in a moral dilemma, torn between the life she's built and the lives destroyed by addiction. While Blunt's performance and the film's relevance are lauded, some critics find the plot predictable. Despite this, Pain Hustlers has ignited conversations about the opioid crisis and corporate responsibility. As dads, Pain Hustlers hits hard. It's a stark reminder of the responsibilities we hold, not just to our families, but to society at large. We'll dive into how the film portrays the struggle between financial security and ethical integrity, a balance many of us grapple with. So, dads, join us as we explore Pain Hustlers, a film that's as engaging as it is important. It's a journey through the highs and lows of chasing success, and a reflection on the prices we're willing to pay. Tune in for a lively discussion, some dad insights, and maybe even a few laughs along the way.

A bankruptcy deal for OxyContin maker Purdue Pharma gave a legal shield to the Sackler family that ran the company. Now, a challenge to the settlement has gone to the U.S. Supreme Court. Why are families of opioid victims split on whether they want the multi-billion dollar settlement to stand? How could the ruling change who can get immunity from lawsuits in massive corporate settlements? Why have the Boy Scouts of America and U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops submitted briefs calling for Purdue's deal to stand? David Ovalle is a national reporter with the Washington Post focusing on opioids and addiction. For transcripts of Front Burner, please visit: https://www.cbc.ca/radio/frontburner/transcripts Transcripts of each episode will be made available by the next workday. An earlier version of this episode stated that the movie Pain Hustlers was inspired by Purdue and Oxycontin. That film was based on a different company which also sold opioid based pain medication. We've corrected this episode to remove that error.

A new Netflix film, Pain Hustlers, starring Emily Blunt and Chris Evans, is getting a lot of buzz, so we dug into the archives to unearth an interview with Evan Hughes from February 2022. Hughes is author of Hard Sell: Crime and Punishment at an Opioid Startup, about his coverage of an out-of-control drug maker that destroyed lives and paid a price for doing so, which was the inspiration for the film. Blimey, it's another cracking line-up on this week's Empire Podcast, as first Sophie Butcher chats with Bottoms director Emma Seligman about female fight clubs and improv; Chris Hewitt talks to The Royal Hotel director, Kitty Green, about her excellent drama set in the Australian Outback (and yes, there's a question about snakes); and finally there's an excerpt from Chris' interview with the legendary Sir Patrick Stewart, who talks about writing his memoir, Making It So. (The full version of this interview will be up soon, folks!) Then, using Star Trek-esque technology, Chris beams into the podbooth this week and is joined by Helen O'Hara, James Dyer, and the aforementioned Sophie Butcher as they pay a fond tribute to the great Matthew Perry, get given a chance to wave a magic wand in the direction of Marvel Studios, discuss the week's movie news, and review The Royal Hotel, How To Have Sex, Nyad, Pain Hustlers, and Bottoms. Liza Drake is a blue-collar single mom who has just lost her job and is at the end of her rope. A chance meeting with a pharmaceutical sales rep puts her on an upwards trajectory economically - but a dubious path ethically - as she becomes entangled in a dangerous racketeering scheme. Her unhinged boss, her daughter's worsening medical condition, and the awareness of the devastation the company is causing forces Liza to examine her choices. Inspired by true events, the Netflix film Pain Hustlers stars Emily Blunt, Chris Evans, Andy Garcia, and Catherine O'Hara. It's a sharp and revealing look at what some people do out of desperation and others do out of greed. In this episode of You Can't Make This Up, host Rebecca Lavoie interviews BAFTA award winning director and producer David Yates and producer Lawrence Grey. SPOILER ALERT! If you haven't watched “Pain Hustlers" yet, make sure to add it to your watch-list before listening on.

Andy Farnsworth joins KSL-TV to help audiences decipher #WhatToWatch for the weekend of October 27, 2023. Surviving murderous animatronic puppets at an abandoned kids' pizza joint is the hook for “Five Nights at Freddy's,” but will the movie win the box office this Halloweekend? Also in theaters is Angel Studios’ "After Death," a cinematic exploration of near-death experiences. "Freelance" is an action comedy starring John Cena & Alison Brie. For streaming, Netflix has a new streaming movie starring Chris Evans, Emily Blunt, and Andy Garcia called "Pain Hustlers," about more misdeeds from Big Pharma during the opioid epidemic. The second season of "The Gilded Age" is now streaming on HBO, which is the American-cousin-version of "Downton Abbey." "Curses!" is an animated streaming series about an Indiana Jones-style family trying to return stolen artifacts over on Apple TV Plus. And Disney Plus has the humorous animated short "LEGO Marvel Avengers: Code Red" that brings in the X-Men (in LEGO form, of course). But Andy’s pick of the week is Paramount Plus’s documentary "Milli Vanilli," about the infamous lip-syncing music duo from 1989-90. The whole story is so wild that you wouldn't believe it if it hadn't happened.
