At Visit COS we love to say it all starts with a visit – and with Lindsay Flanagan Huban, it really rings true. After visiting Colorado Springs last summer, she and her husband quickly packed up their belongings and moved from Florida to Olympic City USA. Al Michaels once asked: “Do you believe in Miracles?” and for Lindsay, a job as the Chief of Content at the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Museum is just that. Lindsay now works to curate what's on display and tell the stories of members of Team USA – both past and present. Listen in to hear about her journey and the things coming up for the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Museum.   Be sure to subscribe so you don't miss our next episode! Is there an organization for the exhibition field? A new initiative is picking up steam. The exhibition community in the US, some say, has recently gone from having “nearly one” professional organization — to none at all. That's because of the unexpected 2023 dissolution of NAME, the National Association for Museum Exhibition, a group within the American Alliance of Museums (AAM). But now a new effort is rising at SEGD, an international organization headquartered in the US. It takes the form of a PPG, or professional practice group, specific to exhibition practitioners. How can everyone in the field access professional development and mentorship? What is the role of networking in a professional community? Should there be better standards for the field?Cybelle Jones (CEO of SEGD) and the cofounders of the new PPG, Steven Rosen (President and Creative Director, Available Light), and George Mayer (Retired Vice President of Business Development, Kubik Maltbie), join host Jonathan Alger (Managing Partner, C&G Partners) to discuss “A New Home for the Exhibition Community.” Along the way: how listeners can get involved, the role of local meetups, and what a survey revealed that people in the field most urgently need.Talking Points:ElevateAdvocateEducateStandardizeSocializeCelebrate How to Listen:Making the Museum: https://www.makingthemuseum.com/podcastApple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/making-the-museum/id1674901311 Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/6oP4QJR7yxv7Rs7VqIpI1G Everywhere: https://makingthemuseum.transistor.fm/ Guest Bios: Cybelle Jones is CEO of SEGD, a multidisciplinary community creating experiences that connect people to place. Cybelle is actively involved in various boards and has spoken on the field of experience design at AAM, the V&A, FIT, AIGA, AIA and MuseumNext. Steven Rosen, President and Creative Director, Available Light: Merging performance lighting techniques with traditional non-theatrical environments launched Steven's career and his founding of Available Light over 30 years ago. From Museum exhibits to immersive architecture to trade shows, the fun never stops—it helps that he works with some of the planet's most talented lighting aficionados. The originality and grand scale of Steven's award-winning designs are evident in many one-of-a-kind award-winning projects as: The Neural Climber interactive at the Franklin Institute, Ocean Hall for the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History, the International Spy Museum in DC, and Chicago MSI's U-505. He is passionate about supporting the lighting community. George Mayer first joined Maltbie Associates in 1986 and was responsible for identifying new business opportunities, proposal writing, presentations, contract negotiation, and oversight of project management teams to ensure satisfactory fulfillment for permanent and traveling exhibits. From 2002 to 2009, George worked as the founding director of a new museum fabrication business for Art Guild, Inc., a nationally active trade show exhibits producer. In 2010, George rejoined Maltbie (now Kubik Maltbie, Inc.) as Vice President of Business Development. It's a brand-new season of Speakernomics with our brand-new host, Kenneth "Shark" Kinney! Shark is kicking off our new season with John Register, CSP, a paralympic silver medalist, US Army combat veteran, and Certified Professional Keynote speaker. John discusses being an expert in the professional speaking space, how to define one's expertise and the importance of being easy to work with as a speaker.    In this episode, John talks about:  Go Deep Before Going Wide: Define your expertise and go deep into it before trying to cover a wide range of topics. John suggests finding one word that encapsulates what you do and sticking with it to become known in that specific space.  Be Easy to Work With: As a speaker, it's crucial to be easy to work with, especially for meeting professionals and event planners. John shares practical tips such as providing PowerPoint slides promptly, maintaining open communication, and showing appreciation with small gestures like gift cards for the event team.  Active Role in Networking: Actively seek out opportunities to see other speakers and build relationships within the speaking community. Rather than evaluating other speakers, focus on understanding what they do and use that knowledge to make valuable referrals, fostering a supportive and uplifting environment within the industry.   Who is John Register, CSP?  John Register failed to clear a hurdle as he trained for the Olympic Games—a move that led to a tragic accident and altered his life forever.  He shifted his focus and embraced a “new normal mindset.”  The decorated Persian Gulf War combat U.S. Army veteran world champion became a two-time Paralympic Games Silver Medalist, professional speaker, and global influencer.     Register “amputated his fears” and founded the U.S. Olympic Committee Paralympic Military Sports Program.  He authored 10 Stories to Impact Any Leader: Journal Your Way to Leadership Success in Spring 2020 and works with business leaders to hurdle adversity, amputate fear, and embrace a new normal mindset to win life's medals.    The artificial leg he used to win the silver medal is displayed in the Olympic and Paralympic Museum in Colorado Springs, Colorado.  Learn more about your ad choices. In this episode we celebrate Black History Month and are joined by author Bruce Wolk to explore the inspiring life of sports legend Junius Kellogg and his incredible connection to Pan American World Airways. Junius Kellogg was born on March 16, 1927 in Haverstraw, New York to Lucy Lee Williams and Theodore Kellogg. Young Junius always excelled in the classroom as an outstanding student, but also was an exceptional athlete in every sport he attempted. While in high school, Junius made the Virginia State High School All-Star Team, as well as, earning earn high marks in academics. After graduating in 1946, he was awarded a scholarship to West Virginia State, however, he was drafted into the U.S. Army after only one semester. While in the military in 1948, Junius was named 1st Army all-around athlete. The next year he was offered a basketball scholarship to Manhattan College as the school's first African American scholarship recipient. When eligible to play in the 1950-1951 season, the 6'10” Kellogg made an immediate impact on the team.In January 1951, after reporting that someone was attempting to bribe him, Junius helped authorities uncover the biggest betting scandal in collegiate basketball history. And was subsequently hailed a national hero for his honesty and courage. But despite this, a career in the NBA eluded him mainly because being the whistleblower embarrassed some of the league's executives and star players that were likely involved in past betting schemes. After graduation in June 1953, he was invited to join the Harlem Globetrotters, even though he still dreamed of becoming a professional basketball player in the NBA. That dream was shattered and his life forever changed on April 2, 1954 when a horrific car accident left him paralyzed from the shoulders down. While recovering in the Bronx Veterans Hospital, Junius was approached to be head coach of the Pan Am Jets, a wheelchair basketball team sponsored by Pan American World Airways. In addition, Pan Am offered him a job in the accounting department. He became the first African American coach in the history of wheelchair basketball, and with the Pan Am Jets brought the sport to people throughout the world. Junius coached the U.S. Wheelchair Basketball team to a gold medal at the Tokyo 1964 Paralympic Games. Inspired by Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, he left coaching and devoted his professional life to community activism through the New York City Development Agency and the Eastern Paralyzed Veterans Association. Junius Kellogg has been inducted into the National Wheelchair Basketball Association's Hall of Fame, as well as, the Virginia Sports Hall of Fame. He died at age 71 on September 16, 1998. General manager Don Sweeney says the search for a replacement will begin immediately. Boston made the playoffs in each of Cassidy’s six seasons behind the bench. He coached the Bruins within one victory of the Stanley Cup in 2019. Cassidy immediately becomes a top candidate for vacancies in Philadelphia, Chicago, Winnipeg, Vegas and Detroit and any others that may now come open. The Bruins are expected to be without first-line left winger Brad Marchand and top defenseman Charlie McAvoy for at least the first two months of next season.   Cassidy was previously an assistant coach with the Chicago Blackhawks, he was also a head coach of the Grand Rapids Griffins. NHL – Jets’ Kyle Connor wins Lady Byng for gentlemanly conduct Winnipeg Jets forward Kyle Connor has won the Lady Byng Trophy, given to the NHL’s most gentlemanly player. Connor tied for the second-fewest number of minor penalties during the regular season. He was penalized just twice in over 1,700 minutes of ice time that included regular short-handed shifts and matchups against top offensive opponents. It’s his first Lady Byng honor. Last year’s winner, Jaccob Slavin of Carolina, was second in voting by the Professional Hockey Writer Association. Minnesota defenseman Jared Spurgeon was third. Soccer – Canada men back at practice after meeting with federation Canada Soccer says its World Cup-bound men’s team has returned to practice after refusing to play in an exhibition match against Panama because of strained labor negotiations. The nation’s governing body announced on social media on Monday that the two sides had met the night before. The team returned to practice and future meetings were scheduled. Canada is set to play Curacao at Vancouver’s BC Place on Thursday in the CONCACAF National League. NFL – Denver Broncos sale could come as early as this month The Denver Broncos could have a new owner as soon as this month in what’s expected to be the most expensive deal in sports history at around $4.5 billion. A second round of bids for the franchise was due Monday from prospective buyers. The Pat Bowlen Trust will have to accept the winning bid, and NFL owners will need to approve the sale of the team that’s been in the Bowlen family for nearly four decades. NFL – Romeo Crennel retires after almost 40 years as NFL coach Romeo Crennel announced his retirement Monday, ending a 39-year NFL coaching career that included five Super Bowl titles. Crennel, spent the past eight seasons with the Houston Texans. He was the team’s defensive coordinator from 2014-16 and assistant head coach from 2017-19. In 2020 he was the associate head coach before becoming the interim head coach after coach Bill O’Brien was fired after just four games. NFL – All-Pro Aaron Donald returning to LA Rams with a big raise All-Pro defensive tackle Aaron Donald is getting a big raise to stay with the Los Angeles Rams under a reworked contract through 2024. The team didn’t disclose terms of the new deal, but the NFL Network reported Donald is getting a $40 million raise that will make him the highest-paid defensive player in the league. Donald was already under contract for the next three seasons, but he openly contemplated retirement after he won his first ring with the Rams in February. Instead, the seven-time All-Pro will be back to torment offenses at the heart of Los Angeles’ defense. NFL – Browns’ Watson named in 24th lawsuit by massage therapists A 24th woman has filed a civil lawsuit alleging sexual misconduct by Cleveland Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson, who is also awaiting possible discipline from the NFL. The latest lawsuit was filed in Houston by attorney Tony Buzbee, who is representing all 24 women. Buzbee says in a statement that the women “continue to stand firm for what is right." Watson’s attorney Rusty Hardin said he could not immediately comment on the latest lawsuit. Hardin has repeatedly said Watson has done nothing wrong. Watson has been accused by massage therapists of harassing, assaulting or touching them during appointments and the latest lawsuit makes similar allegations. NCAABSB – Louisville wins 3 straight to reach super regionals Levi Usher hit a two-run single in the eighth, Cameron Masterman added a go-ahead homer in the inning and No. 12 national seed Louisville beat Michigan 11-9 to win the Louisville Regional. Louisville won three straight regional games, after a loss to Michigan on Saturday, to advance to the super regionals against Texas A&M. Usher went 4 for 5 with four RBIs and Masterman added three RBIs, including his fourth homer of the regional. Michigan started the game with three straight doubles to take a 2-0 lead, but Louisville scored seven runs with two outs in the bottom of the first. Golf – LIV – Mickelson joins Saud-funded league Phil Mickelson is ending his 4-month hiatus from competitive golf and is joining the Saudi-funded rival league. Mickelson was the last big name added to the 48-man field for the LIV Golf Invitational outside London that starts Friday.  The six-time major champion was the chief recruiter for the Saudi league. But it appeared to backfire when he was quoted as accusing the PGA Tour of “obnoxious greed.” He also says while he’s aware of Saudi Arabia’s human rights record, it would be worth it to join if it meant having leverage against the PGA Tour.  Mickelson says he’ll still play the majors. Golf – Jack Nicklaus to become honorary citizen of St. Andrews Jack Nicklaus is returning to St. Andrews in July to become an honorary citizen. And this time he’ll be joining some exclusive company. The honor from the town council has been awarded to only two other American citizens. One was amateur great Bobby Jones in 1958. The other was Benjamin Franklin in 1759. Nicklaus won two of his three British Open titles at St. Andrews. He loves the Old Course so much that he chose St. Andrews in 2005 to play in his 164th and final major championship. Nicklaus says he won’t be playing in the Champions Challenge exhibition. Olympics – Phelps, Vonn among those heading to US Olympic & Para Hall Lindsey Vonn, Michelle Kwan, Mia Hamm, Billie Jean King and the late Pat Summitt are among the nine individual women who will be inducted into the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Hall of Fame this summer. Michael Phelps and hurdling great Roger Kingdom are also going in. Others voted onto the 2022 class were Natalie Coughlin, Muffy Davis, David Kiley, Trischa Zorn-Hudson and Gretchen Fraser. The 1976 women’s 4×100 freestyle relay swimming team, anchored by Shirley Babashoff in its stunning upset over the East Germans, and the 2002 men’s Paralympic sled hockey team also were voted into the hall by a mix of Olympic and Paralympic athletes, media and administrators and fans. The induction ceremony is set for June 24 at the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Museum in Colorado Springs. NCAAFB – Tim Tebow among first-timers on College Football HOF ballot Tim Tebow is among the former players making a first appearance on the College Football Hall of Fame ballot this year.  Tebow led Florida to two national championships and won a Heisman Trophy and has been outspoken in his Christian beliefs. Good Morning, Colorado, you're listening to the Daily Sun-Up with the Colorado Sun. It's Monday August 30th. Today - Hear from the Sun's politics team as they discuss the 2022 election, redistricting and COVID-19. Before we begin, let's go back in time with some Colorado history adapted from historian Derek R Everett's book “Colorado Day by Day”: Today we're going back to August 30th, 1931 - the birthday of Jack Swigert. No Coloradan has ever had a better perspective of their state than Swigert. Granted, as the command module pilot of the Apollo XIII mission, he had little time to enjoy the view. Swigert graduated from the University of Colorado and went on to serve in the Air Force. Then, In 1966 NASA chose him as an astronaut for the Apollo missions.   Now, our feature story.  Welcome to a special edition of the Daily Sun Up podcast with a roundup of recent political news.  Colorado Sun politics reporter Daniel Ducassi hosts his colleagues on the Sun's politics team Jesse Paul, Thy Vo and Sandra Fish as they talk about the 2022 election, redistricting and COVID-19.   To keep up with the latest from the Colorado Sun's politics team go to coloradosun.com   Thanks for listening. Finally, here are a few stories you should know about today:   The Martin Drake power plant in downtown Colorado Springs burned its last coal on Saturday, with natural gas fired turbines continuing to meet the electricity demands of the state's second largest city. Colorado Springs Utilities has been under pressure to transition to cleaner fuels, especially as the city contemplates redevelopment in neighborhoods near the plant, which is close to America the Beautiful Park and the new U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Museum. The utility's other coal-fired plant, Ray D. Nixon, near Fort Carson, is expected to transition to cleaner fuel in 2029.   There are 705 people in Colorado hospitalized because of COVID-19 at the end of last week, the highest level since January 21. Confirmed coronavirus cases have been spiking as the delta variant spreads, with about 99 percent of all case caused by the variant that is thought to be as contagious as chickenpox. COVID hospitalizations in Colorado still remain well below their peak of 1,847 reached on December 1, but the trend of increasing admissions is not showing signs of slowing. On Thursday, Colorado reported that its seven-day average of new daily cases was 1,490. Colorado's highest seven-day average of new daily cases was about 5,400 in November.   Jobs that disappeared during the pandemic are coming back in Colorado at a faster pace than in most other states. But even with only about 80 percent of the 362,000 jobs lost when Colorado shut down in 2020 back, employers say they are having a hard time filling openings. That may change when federal pandemic unemployment benefits end on Saturday. Colorado's unemployment rate is around 6.1 percent. She was introduced to triathlon through the USA Triathlon Collegiate Recruitment Program. Tomlin says her favorite parts of triathlon are the transitions because they “require athleticism, tenacity, and explosive response all while remaining calm, loose and focused.” Tomlin endured a stress fracture in her foot in 2018 and came back to win the 2019 Sarasota-Bradenton ITU Triathlon World Cup. Her time recovering was spent taking the time to focus on her mindset and learning how to take care of her body properly in order to stay in the sport.
