Clare MEP Fearful Mercusor Deal Has 'Substantially Higher' Chances Without National Parliment Vote

A Clare MEP has raised concerns that the political procedures in place in the European Parliament could lead to the Mercosur trade deal coming to fruition. Scarriff Independent, Michael McNamara, has this week penned a letter to European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen requesting an end to the negotiations of the trade deal. Previous trade deals have required ratification from national parliaments prior to being put before the European Commission, however moves have been made in recent years for deals to only need EU parliament approval. McNamara says he is fearful that if the deal only requires ratification at an EU level, the chances of it coming into place are 'substantially higher'.

Parliament will sit under urgency this week - with the new government pushing through the first changes in its 100 day plan. Part of this is repealing Fair Pay Agreement legislation. Former National ministerial adviser Brigitte Morten told Tim Dower every opposition complains about the use of urgency - then use it themselves when in government. She says the last Labour government used it considerably more - and while it'd argue Covid meant it had to respond with emergency legislation, they were pushing a lot more through under urgency even in August.   LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Confused, angered, and heartbroken by the push to weaken Israel's independent judiciary? Not sure what to think? Rabbi Deborah Waxman, Ph.D., Reconstructing Judaism's CEO, and Rabbi Maurice Harris, its Israel affairs specialist, don't claim to have all the answers. Yet, they've each just spent extended stays in the country immersed in conversations about its future as well as its relationship with Diaspora Jewry. In conversation, they make an impassioned, moral defense of sustained engagement with Israel, even as they take a principled opposition to the government's attempts to strip away the country's democratic character. Harris and Waxman describe what it's like to be in Israel, and taking part in demonstrations, as this all unfolds. They explain the Reconstructionist commitment to a multi-vocal, multi-perspective conversation about Israel/Palestine as exemplified by the running debate on Evolve itself. Our guests also respond to several Evolve essays putting Palestinian suffering front and center. This is a grounding, not-to-be missed conversation about some of the most pressing questions facing the Jewish world today. Theme song, “Ilu Finu” by Rabbi Miriam Margles. This Israeli government is different, unprecedented, more religious, and righter wing than any before. At least, that's what countless headlines and pundits are saying. According to two Israeli legal scholars and activists, Gila Stopler and Yofi Tirosh, this really is a moment of crisis for Israel. Stopler and Tirosh detail how the dramatic drop in women represented in government — two Orthodox coalition parties have no women representatives — is shaping an agenda that could dramatically curtail women's rights. Rather than the cosmopolitan place in which women thrive and lead, they warn of a sobering future in which men and women are segregated in much of public life, looking more like other Conservative Middle Eastern nations than the nation Israel's founders built and envisioned. Will it happen? Can the legal system — itself under assault — or popular protests prevent the worst fears from occurring? How much does this all have to do with the inability of Israeli and Palestinian leaders to make peace? We discuss all this and more. Theme song, “Ilu Finu” by Rabbi Miriam Margles. Poo was pelted at officers during an early morning operation today to contain the protest at Parliament. The 3.30am operation caught the occupiers off guard with attempts to thwart the plan, resulting in eight arrests - seven for disorderly behaviour and one for obstruction. About 300 police staff worked to install concrete barriers at key roads around the perimeter of Parliament, which are designed to let protesters' cars out, but not back in.

Vaccine mandates will be lifted once New Zealand is past the worst of the omicron outbreak. Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern made the commitment this afternoon but wouldn't put a date on when exactly it would happen. Protesters on Parliament's lawn have been calling for the mandates to be dropped. But Ardern maintains the commitment isn't in response to their demands. Here's our political reporter, Katie Scotcher.

Protesters have escaped any imminent police crackdown as they flout the law outside Parliament, blocking roads and setting up more and more tents. Community leaders have added their cries to the politicians', asking for an end to the illegal activity - they say they want their city back. But the protesters are not going anywhere - and the police won't force them. Here's our deputy political editor Craig McCulloch.

Police say they've made progress speaking to the leaders of the protest on Parliament's front lawn. Police Commissioner Andrew Coster this morning said towing would begin today. But not a single vehicle has been towed off the streets - a very small number of protesters have moved theirs voluntarily. And the protest continues to grow. Our reporter Jake McKee joins us with the latest on this developing story.

'No longer tenable'. The country's top cop has renewed calls for protesters to move their vehicles off the roads blocking central Wellington streets, to bring to an end the major disruption. They've been there for more than a week and pleas to move them to free parking nearby have been ignored. Police Commissioner Andrew Coster says tow companies have so far been reluctant to help. He has asked the Defence Force to help tow the vehicles away, and is waiting to hear back, but doesn't have a time frame for when they'll be gone. Meanwhile patience towards the protestors appears to be wearing thin. The so-called anti-mandate protest is now in its eighth day and the crowd has only grown since it started. Reporter Jake McKee and cameraman Angus Dreaver have the latest.

Jacqui Lambie has always stood out from the mainstream of Australian politicians. Love her or hate her, you can’t deny the woman is heartfelt and unscripted. Jacqui is no-nonsense because that's what life has always been like for her. A working class girl from Tasmania, Jacqui takes us on her journey through the army, her enforced medical retirement following an horrendous injury, her fight to get adequate treatment from the Department of Veteran Affairs, her descent into depression, struggle to raise two kids as a single mother on welfare, her son’s ice addiction, and the roller coaster ride that is life as a politician. It doesn't get any more real and raw than this, but somehow Jacqui weaves humour and honesty into her stories of resilience, proving her father right when he told her 'you can’t keep a bloody Lambie down'. So, what happens when your past drives your future? We find out in FORTY This episode may be a trigger for some people. If you need to talk to someone, support is available.
