Each year, the Philadelphia Fringe Festival brings local, national and international art to Philadelphia with a nearly month-long extravaganza of performing arts.  But with how much it costs to enter, can most performing artist afford to apply? And even if they are able to get in, it's not a given that these artists will turn a profit on their performances. Most artists who are trying to make their voices heard do not make a lot of money and depend on art shows and events to make ends meet. The Free Fringe in Philadelphia offers artists a more affordable alternative to the costs of applying to Philadelphia Fringe.  In this episode, Bret talks with Murphy Grumbar who tells him about his own recent experiences putting together and staging a performance piece for the Free Fringe and his thoughts on the performing art scene in Philadelphia.

Maren Montalbano began her vocal career with the San Francisco Girls Chorus at age seven, and has been singing ever since. A graduate of both New England Conservatory of Music and Tufts University, Ms. Montalbano can be heard in three GRAMMY Award-winning albums: John Adams' Pulitzer Prize-winning work, On the Transmigration of Souls (2005), and Gavin Bryars' The Fifth Century (2018), and Lansing McLoskey's Zealot Canticles (2019), on which she is a featured soloist. She recorded Douglas Cuomo's opera Arjuna's Dilemma with Anonymous 4 members Susan Hellauer and Jacqueline Horner, which was released in 2008 to critical acclaim.  She appears on over a dozen commercial recordings, including Alice Parker's Listen Lord and The Family Reunion, Kile Smith's Vespers, Lewis Spratlan's Hesperus is Phosphorus, and Ted Hearne's Sound from the Bench. In the past five years, Ms. Montalbano has been a guest artist with Lyric Fest, Choral Arts Philadelphia, Network for New Music and Piffaro, the Renaissance Band. When she performed the modern premiere of Destinos vencen finezas, a 17th century zarzuela by Juan Francisco de Navas, with Philadelphia's Baroque orchestra, Tempesta di Mare, her dramatic interpretation was hailed as “pure, suave and sensuous” (Philadelphia Inquirer, March 2015). When she premiered the role of Andy Warhol #2 in Andy: a POPera (Bearded Ladies Cabaret and Opera Philadelphia), the Broad Street Review called her singing “impeccable.” Her debut album, Sea Tangle: Songs from the North, featuring all women composers and performers, was released in December 2016. During the pandemic of 2020-21, Ms. Montalbano turned to the digital world. She wrote, produced, and starred in an interactive digital one-woman show called The Bodice Ripper Project, which had its world premiere at the Philadelphia Fringe Festival, and she started a podcast of the same name. Other pandemic world premiere projects include David Lang's in nature (The Crossing/Warren Miller Performing Arts Center), Pete Wyer's Spring Street Opera (American Opera Projects), and the release of six different commercial albums with various collaborators. The 2021-22 season features Ms. Montalbano in more world premieres, both live and digital, from a podcast musical by Jennifer Rosenfeld to a work by Lansing McLoskey honoring the 100th anniversary of James Joyce's Ulysses. Ms. Montalbano lives in New Jersey and sings professionally throughout a wide geographic area with such groups as Opera Company of Philadelphia, Trio Eos, and The Crossing. She is passionate about keeping artists employed doing what they do best. Ms. Montalbano currently studies voice with Julianne Baird.

When she performed, the physical act of singing such raw material with her audience, was deeply healing on a cellular level.   It was an incredible journey to her inner world and as the performance ended, she left behind her on the stage, a big heap of emotional baggage.   BIO Maren Montalbano is an opera singer, business coach, and writer, whose voice appears on 3 GRAMMY Award-winning albums. Courtney published her first book Sentient. I loved the excitement she had giving me the overview of the book. The pure energy she had during the interview as she described her creative side made it hard not to feel good about everything. Watch, I think her energy will rub off on you too. Courtney Hunter is a serial creator from Philadelphia, PA with experience in writing, the fashion industry, and live performance. After eighteen years of studying contemporary dance, she set out to carve herself a path in fashion and retail buying. Upon graduating from Philadelphia University and settling into her career, she turned back to dance. While working as a retail buyer for Burlington Stores, Courtney began producing contemporary dance and burlesque performances under her production company Stolen Fire Collective, aptly named after Prometheus, the fire-stealing god. Sentience, her debut Science Fiction novel, is a written extension of a contemporary dance piece that was produced for the Philadelphia Fringe Festival in 2017 based on artificial intelligence. A lifelong Sci-Fi fan (her favorite movie as a little girl was and still is Jurassic Park), Courtney loves anything Promethean in nature, and her favorite books, movies, and television shows are the ones that challenge the ethics of the future that we are rapidly heading towards. Some of her favorites include Jurassic Park (obviously), The 100, The OA, Westworld, The East, and Ex Machina. She still resides in Philadelphia with her partner, Will, and her rescue pups, Rickie and Billie. In her free time, she records a podcast called The Sentience Podcast, which started as a behind the scenes look at the making of her novel and has evolved into an auditory hub for all things science fiction, creative process, true crime, and the occult.   https://www.courtneyphunter.com/ https://www.amazon.com/Sentience-Science-Fiction-Exploration-Through/dp/B08L6B27RC

My guest today is opera singer, business coach, and writer, Maren Montalbano. A graduate of Tufts University and the New England Conservatory of Music, Maren has sung at Carnegie Hall in NYC, Walt Disney Concert Hall in LA, multiple theaters in Europe, and even performed on stage, get this...with the Rolling Stones. Wow.  But Maren's career has suffered right along with the rest of us during this past year, but that didn't slow her down. When live performances disappeared during the pandemic, Maren turned her focus to the online world: writing, producing, and premiering a one-woman show called The Bodice Ripper Project as an interactive digital performance at the Philadelphia Fringe Festival. That show, along with the accompanying podcast of the same name, became an exploration of sexuality, feminism, and the journey to self-empowerment through the lens of romance novels. Guys, if you haven't listened to The Bodice Ripper podcast, put it at the top of your list...it's super fun and you might even learn a little bit about opera while you're at it.  Maren is passionate about uplifting and amplifying new and diverse voices in classical music, which has fueled her work as a business coach for musicians. We're going to debunk some singer stereotypes, hear about Maren's experience working on a cruise ship when she was only eight years old... You're even going to learn what it means to slow down, meditate and move at what Maren calls "the speed of plants". That actually sounds pretty good given our world these days.  Alright––let's get to it and dig into my conversation with Maren Montalbano. My world is one of classical music, which has traditionally been riddled with systemic racism, sexism, and classism. I believe right now in this industry we are undergoing a paradigm shift, and that the institutions which have been upholding these oppressive systems are crumbling in the face of the pandemic. Individuals have much more influence now than they ever have, and I am excited about creating a new, more equitable paradigm - not only in classical music, but across the world. My music career began at age three on the violin (my mom is a violinist, and she started me in on Suzuki, which she was also teaching). I ended up getting quite good: landing concertmaster of my middle school orchestra in 7th grade and taking private lessons at San Francisco Conservatory. I was being groomed for the Tchaikovsky Competition…but there was a lot of pressure to practice all the time, and it made me miserable. It was my mother's dream, not mine, that I be a virtuoso violinist. I quit violin at age 13 and focused on singing. As a singer, I find my voice makes me a conduit between the tangible and the intangible. The music I sing communicates to something deeper that resides in all of us, and helping people tap into that well feeds my soul. My one-woman show, The Bodice Ripper Project, was born out of romance scenes I used to write backstage at the opera. I read them aloud to my fellow cast members in the dressing room, to everyone's delight, and someone suggested I set it to music. That idea turned into a one-woman opera/cabaret hybrid show, which then evolved into an interactive digital performance at the Philadelphia Fringe Festival (thanks to COVID), and even an accompanying podcast of the same name! Writing the show provided much-needed focus for me during stay-at-home orders, but it also created a unique opportunity for me to explore an incident of childhood sexual abuse in my past, transmute that pain into art, and in the process, heal and empower myself. The transformation that I experienced working on that show was profound, and I will be ever grateful to the time I was given in this pandemic to slow down and really process these deep wounds. In addition to writing and performing, I also am a business coach for musicians. I worked for many years in arts administration (most recently as the Operations Manager for the GRAMMY Award winning choir The Crossing), and I see so many people in the classical music field come out of music school with lots of technical know-how on their instrument but very little practical real-world experience. This makes them more likely to look to a larger organization like an opera company or a symphony for job stability...but those gigs are very competitive, and as I mentioned above, the entire job search is rife with systemic oppression. I believe there is a better way for artists to get their voices heard. Creating and producing your own art is easier than you think, and I use my experience in arts administration to teach the basics of marketing, budgeting, fundraising, and networking to my students. Artists I work with are able to use the skills I teach to produce their own tours, albums, and recitals, bringing their work directly to the audiences without the need for a gatekeeper. I'm entering into my second season of The Bodice Ripper Project podcast, and this season will be focused more on other artists and their stories. I always ask my audience how they will rip their own bodice and let their true selves out...so as I interview authors, composers, and performing artists, I intend on finding out more about their creative processes and what the metaphor of bodice-ripping means to them.

Kimberly Redman was raised in the small town of Monson, Massachusetts. She attended the Pioneer Valley Performing Arts School in South Hadley, MA starting in seventh grade studying Theatre, Theatre Design, and Sculpture; participating in countless theater productions. Whether it was performing and constructing sets to being the hair and makeup designer for these productions Kimberly had a need to be there. After graduating in 2014 she moved to Philadelphia, PA to attend University of the Arts. There she had a focus on performance but also took interest in scenic design, directing, and had fascination with clowning after taking a studio class with the master students of the Pig Iron Theatre Company. During her college years she also worked as a makeup artist for many of the college's theatrical shows including the world premiere of Acedia by Taj Rauch directed by Amy Dogus Brown. Since graduating Kimberly co-produced and directed an absurdist comedy show Just Another Normal Conversation with Brittney Anderson (co-producer, playwright) and Becca Thomas (co-producer, stage manager) for the Philadelphia Fringe Festival in 2018. Shortly afterwards Kimberly started picking up work as a freelance makeup artist. She has worked short films such as Miss Barton's Famous Cakes produced by Natasha (Tasha) Kuroenen directed by Jared Hirsh & Nelson Vicens featured in the Philadelphia Film Festival in 2019 to needing to wake up and travel at 4am to make a train to Princeton New Jersey to work a single corporate job because she doesn't have a car. In the months leading up to March, Kimberly presented a performance art piece called "Trash: A Painting of Now" constructed entirely out of trash at the Painted Bride, worked on some music videos for either makeup or scenic dressing, as well as with a plethora of local upcoming photographers and musicians as a makeup artist/stylist. The last project before quarantine was being the Production Designer of this short documentary, KIM directed by Maria Vattimo and executively produced by Joshua Amrani and Joseph Vattimo based on local Philadelphian Ballerina and founder of The Klassic Contemporary Ballet Company Kimberly Landle and her story about her sexual abuse and how she transformed her pain in her work. Currently, Kim (Redman) is at home working on personal directoral projects and riding the emotional waves of being unemployed during an unmanaged pandemic with an increasingly facsist society.
