A Mediocre Time with Tom and Dan — Episode Notes Episode: "Trimming Your Neighbor's Bush" Hosts: Tom and Dan | Guest: Aimee LeCours Sponsors / Ad Reads Modern Plumbing Industries (modernpi.com) — Mention Tom and Dan for 10% off service calls: drain/sewer, water heaters, water quality, custom projects, repipes, and emergency calls. Serves Seminole, Orange, Lake, Volusia, and Osceola counties. Bear Cat THC Seltzer (drinkbearcat.com, promo code BDM420) — 20% off a 5% THC / 20mg CBD seltzer with a mushroom blend; no recommendation needed, must be 21+. Available at Gravity Taproom (Orlando), a bar in Winter Park, Legacy Wine and Liquors (Sanford), Rock Brew (Sanford), and One Utopia (Clermont), with tastings announced on their social media. Streamline Mortgage Solutions (streamlineflorida.com) — Contact Brian for free mortgage guidance; he tracks changing mortgage programs/laws and alerts clients when it's worth refinancing. Segment Rundown Cold open: Orlando Weekly wins — Tom and Dan thank listeners for voting them #1 podcast in the Orlando Weekly awards again (won every year but one), explain why the recognition matters for their small business, praise Will's Pub owner Will Walker for leaning into similar local promotion, and tease a story they're saving for Monday's BDM-only show. Nobody has it figured out — After a bit riffing on an adult-film parody, the group discusses chasing money and fame with Aimee, including the story of Pauly Shore once calling them for business advice and George Wallace still hustling decades into his career — the takeaway being that no one, however successful, ever fully "figures it out." Selling 10% of the show — Inspired by NFL teams selling ownership stakes (the Atlanta Falcons' $1.6B sale of 10%) and Mark Cuban's rise, the hosts joke about selling 10% of Tom and Dan and using AI to preserve their likenesses after death. Aimee's job buyout — Aimee shares that she's taking a voluntary severance from her 12-year job at a Medicaid-based insurance company, effective by May 2027, and has already lined up new therapy and contract work; the hosts joke about her stealing office supplies and the three of them starting an affiliate partnership. Neighbor bush feud advice — Aimee asks for help with an 11-year feud with an elderly neighbor over a shared, overgrown bush encroaching on her house; the group runs through escalating "solutions" (hiring a surveyor since overhanging branches can legally be trimmed, plant diseases/whiteflies, popping tires, a kindness gift basket) while Aimee also vents about the same neighbors letting their dogs bark late at night. Aimee's upcoming shows (first plug) — Plugs for Aimee's long-running Shit Sandwich comedy show (15 years, first and third Fridays, with Rue co-hosting), a free family show/class Aug 29 at the Melrose Center, an improv jam that same night at Stigma Tattoos through the Florida Comedy Collective, and a Sept 26 West End Live show opening for Johnny Pemberton (Fallout, Superstore, Pickle and Peanut). Marching band car wash fundraiser — Tom plugs his niece's Lake Howell Marching Band charity car wash, comparing it to his own high school band fundraiser days, and the group riffs on whether kids doing donation-based fundraisers should just be tipped for playing their instruments instead, plus a jab at cheap oversized "big check" charity photo ops. AI voice-translation app demo — Dan shows off an AI app that translates a video into other languages (French, Mandarin, Swedish) in the speaker's own voice with matching lip movement, demoed using Tom & Dan Cruise 2027 promo clips, sparking discussion of how fast real-time translation tech is advancing. Optimus robot speculation — Riffing on a detail from Tesla's Aug 5 earnings call (robots reportedly getting chips before cars), the hosts imagine owning a humanoid Optimus robot to drive any car and handle housework and yard work, while questioning Elon Musk's track record on self-driving promises. Costa Concordia documentary recap — Tom recaps a Netflix documentary on the 2012 Costa Concordia disaster (the captain's unauthorized close "salute" pass, the reef strike, 32 deaths, his botched response and prison sentence), tying it back to their own upcoming Tom & Dan Cruise announcement. Poop stories and Concrete Mike call — A riff on awkward public-pooping stories (a "poop cruise" documentary, past guests improvising with towels) leads into a call from regular listener "Concrete Mike," who talks about using job-site dumpsters instead of portable toilets, becoming a new grandfather the night before, and hitting his 50th birthday. Aging radio personality tangent — A riff on an old colleague/bit going "full radio" and speculation about the declining health of an unnamed public figure known for hormone-replacement therapy abuse. Grave-niche theft follow-up — Dan describes keeping his parents' and family dog's ashes in an urn box in his wife's office, following up on a prior story about robbers stealing from cemetery niches. Caller: Tom's mom — Tom calls his mom live on air to ask, hypothetically, whether she'd help him commit various crimes (grave robbing, fake pest-control scams, driving a getaway car); she affectionately confirms she'd always back him, contrasted with Aimee's mom, who Aimee says would turn her in. Penn State cocaine ring story — Discussion of a news story about a cocaine trafficking ring run out of two Penn State fraternities, the alleged ringleader facing decades in prison, and a broader riff on drug legalization versus criminalization and treatment-based drug policy. Portland, Oregon tangent — A brief detour recalling an unsettling encounter with an intimidating stranger during a past trip to Portland, comparing its street culture to Orlando's. World's oldest person story — Discussion of the new Guinness World Record holder for oldest living person (a British woman turning 117) and the extraordinary span of history she's lived through — the Great Depression, WWII, the moon landing, the invention of the internet, two pandemics, and the Titanic sinking. Aimee's C-section story — Aimee shares her emergency C-section experience, including the surgical team nicking her breech baby's toe and playing an unwanted song during the procedure, plus a listener's story about a relative's more serious, complicated C-section. Future medicine and tech nostalgia — Closing speculation about longevity advances (cancer vaccines, genetic screening at birth) alongside early-technology nostalgia, including Dan's dad's status-symbol car phone. Show close and plugs — Final recap of Aimee's upcoming shows, a tease that BDM members will hear a special story on Monday's show, and a note that a full Tom & Dan Cruise announcement is coming soon. Key Dates / Plugs Mentioned August 29, 1:30 PM — Aimee LeCours' free family show/class at the Melrose Center (Orange County Library System). August 29, 6:30 PM — Aimee's improv jam at Stigma Tattoos (Downtown Orlando) with the Florida Comedy Collective. September 26 — Aimee LeCours opens for Johnny Pemberton at West End Live. On Friday, January 13, 2012, The Costa Concordia set sail for a weeklong cruise around the Mediterranean. Tragically, hours into the voyage tragedy struck as the captain sailed the ship recklessly close to the rocks near Giglio Island. By morning, 32 lives had been lost and, in the years following the tragedy, a criminal trial would be held to hold those responsible accountable. Rose Metcalf, last survivor of the Costa Concordia shipwreck
What starts as a conversation about Missouri float trips quickly spirals into absolute Rizz Show nonsense. The gang debates the best rivers to float, tells stories about cliff jumping, beer helmets, and questionable rafting decisions before taking a hard left into one of the weirdest mornings we've had in a while.Then...the studio fire alarm goes off.In real time, the crew debates whether to abandon the building, compares themselves to the captain of the Costa Concordia, questions maritime law, and somehow turns an emergency evacuation into comedy. Fortunately, everyone survives the "catastrophe" and returns to the studio with nothing more than bruised egos and a fresh appreciation for construction dust.As if that wasn't enough, Learn celebrates National Hot Dog Day with Steve's Hot Dogs, the crew argues about the proper way to eat a hot dog without looking ridiculous, and everyone collectively decides the word "glizzy" deserves to disappear forever.Missouri news keeps the chaos rolling as the crew debates higher interstate speed limits, gets completely lost trying to figure out daylight saving time, celebrates Lion's Choice landing on USA Today's best regional fast food list, and somehow manages to make basic legislation sound impossibly confusing.Meanwhile, Moon discovers an actual beetle inside a bag of coffee, decides to brew it anyway, and accidentally sends everyone into a discussion about FDA limits on insect parts in food that absolutely nobody asked for but everyone somehow needed.Add in bizarre lawsuits, White Castle stories, documentaries, celebrity tangents, weird news, listener emails, and the usual sarcastic back-and-forth, and you've got another completely normal day...by Rizz Show standards. Then the building catches everyone's attention with a fire alarm, Rizz refuses to evacuate because apparently radio hosts go down with the ship, and somehow the conversation spirals into MySpace, CDs making a comeback, William Shatner becoming a metal frontman at 95, and why nobody under 25 knows who Hole is anymore.Just another Tuesday. This episode starts with excitement surrounding the upcoming Super Troopers 3 as the Broken Lizard crew prepares to visit the studio, giving everyone an excuse to geek out over one of the greatest comedy franchises ever made. Before they arrive, the crew jumps into Crap on Celebrities, where nostalgia absolutely takes over.Could MySpace actually deserve more respect than it gets? Turns out the platform helped launch artists like Taylor Swift, Katy Perry, Adele, and even Dane Cook before social media became the attention economy we know today. That naturally leads into everyone's embarrassing MySpace memories, Top 8 drama, party bulletins, and the strange realization that we all willingly learned HTML just to put terrible music on our profiles.Speaking of things nobody expected to return...CDs are suddenly making a comeback. Yes... actual compact discs. The crew debates whether anyone even owns a CD player anymore, whether physical media still matters, and whether younger generations are rediscovering something older fans never completely gave up on. It's part nostalgia, part technology debate, and part excuse for Moon to become the resident audio nerd. Then things somehow become even stranger.William Shatner is officially performing heavy metal songs at Riot Fest... at ninety-five years old.If you've ever wondered how you pitch a Super Troopers sequel that somehow revolves around Farva marrying Thorny's sister... congratulations, you're exactly the kind of person who belongs here. The Broken Lizard crew joins The Rizzuto Show to pull back the curtain on Super Troopers 3, hitting theaters August 7. They explain how the movie evolved into a massive wedding comedy inspired by real-life Indian wedding celebrations, why an elephant became part of the insanity, and how Farva once again manages to become everyone's favorite walking HR violation.Along the way, the guys talk about stepping back into those famous uniforms, convincing Brian Cox to return after becoming television royalty on Succession, and what it's feels like watching one of the greatest actors alive casually roast everyone on set. Turns out working with Brian Cox means getting insulted by a professional... and somehow enjoying every second of it.Of course, this wouldn't be The Rizzuto Show without the rails disappearing almost immediately. Rafe spends an uncomfortable amount of time explaining his ongoing campaign to become everyone's stepdad by marrying their mothers. Somehow that transitions into discussions about prison etiquette, monster trucks replacing elephants at weddings, popcorn buckets becoming collector's items, and whether Potfest will ever actually happen. The conversation also covers the incredible crowdfunding success behind Super Troopers 2, the eight-year journey to making the third film, hidden pop culture references fans should watch for, and why you absolutely need to stay after the credits. If you're a longtime Broken Lizard fan, a movie nerd, or just someone who appreciates comedians who somehow built an entire career making hilarious movies with their best friends, this episode delivers nonstop laughs from start to finish. This comedy podcast is proudly made in St. Louis with the same chaotic energy you've come to expect from The Rizzuto Show.Follow The Rizzuto Show → https://linktr.ee/rizzshow for more from your favorite daily comedy show.Connect with The Rizzuto Show Comedy Podcast online → https://1057thepoint.com/RizzShow.Hear The Rizz Show daily on the radio at 105.7 The Point | Hubbard Radio in St. Louis, MO.Crews to resume search for possible drowning in Meramec River near CastlewoodUS House passes bill to make daylight saving time permanentHouse passes Trump-backed bill that would make daylight saving time permanentMissouri approves new 75 mph maximum speed limitLion's Choice up for best regional fast foodRural NY School District Will Be One of First to Bring Humanoid Robot Into ClassroomHumanoid robots perform live surgery in world firstMirrors in Space? The Tim Conway Jr. Show Hour 1 (7.1) Timmy set the patriotic cruise-ship vibe on KFI years ago after the Costa Concordia disaster — atta boy, you ain’t no jinx! Now the whole crew is following suit as we cheer on Team USA vs. Bosnia in the FIFA World Cup. Timmy’s all about flying that American flag for the country’s massive 250th birthday — and fun fact: thieves know if there’s an American flag out front, there’s probably a gun inside, so steer clear, burglars! Chair of America250 and former US Treasurer Rosie Rios joins the show — she signed trillions in US currency, rose from one of nine kids raised by a single mom to Harvard grad and one of the highest positions in government. Atta girl! She’ll be in New York for the July 3 ball drop, then heading to LA for the huge America’s Block Party Benefit Show at the LA Coliseum on the 4th with Maren Morris, Chris Stapleton, Smashing Pumpkins, Chaka Khan, Anthony Ramos and host Queen Latifah. Tickets are a steal at just $17.76 on Ticketmaster! See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Friday the 13th is BACK. And not just once this year, baby witches, but THREE TIMES. Yes, 2026 is absolutely unhinged and we should all be afraid. This week, Alicia and Terra are cracking open the folklore, the fear, and the full chaotic history of the most infamous date on the Gregorian Calendar. We're talking Norse mythology and the death of Baldr (yes, Loki is involved, obviously). We're talking the Last Supper, triskaidekaphobia, and why the number 13 has been considered cursed since at least the 1400s. We're talking real Friday the 13th disasters, including the 1972 Andes plane crash and the 2012 Costa Concordia shipwreck, because apparently this date has notes. And then we zoom out: Tuesday the 13th, the Ides of March, Italy's fear of the number 17, and the 1980 slasher film that turned a spooky superstition into a full cultural institution. Is Friday the 13th genuinely cursed? A Christian holdover? A Norse myth remix? A media invention? It's all of the above, and we couldn't be more delighted. Three Fridays the 13th in one year. Stay vigilant. Hosted by Alicia Herder and Terra Keck. Produced by Marcel Pérez. Creative Directing by Mallory Jordan. Music by Kevin MacLeod. Official Witch, Yes! Discord! Witch, Yes! on Patreon! After an accident, we create a narrative to give meaning to misfortune. these narratives are packed in the discourse of science and they claim to prevent future recurrences (formal investigation reports) and learn from accidents? But to what extent are these narratives true? can they really prevent anything? do they help us to learn from accidents? here's my talk at the Library of Accidents in Edinburgh drawing upon examples from the Costa Concordia and the US Airways 1549. both the narratives are underpinned in myth although they are presented as 'scientific and objective' truths.
Ever notice how one date can hijack your imagination? We're pulling the mask off Friday the 13th and following its trail from medieval warnings and biblical symbolism to stock market lore, slasher-era storytelling, and the everyday rituals people still swear by. With a mix of history, myth, and measurable facts, we test whether the world is truly more dangerous on this date—or whether our brains are simply better at remembering the hits than the misses. We start with the building blocks: why Fridays got a bad rap in old travel tales, how thirteen at a table became a cultural red flag, and when the pairing of Friday and the 13th actually entered print. From there, we track the modern engines of superstition. A 1907 Wall Street novel turned fear into a financial plot. Decades later, a film franchise transformed a day on the calendar into a cinematic shorthand for danger, priming generations to expect jump scares in real life. Expectation shapes perception; once you're on alert, every black cat and creaky stair reads like a sign. But stories don't stand alone. We walk through famous events pinned to the date—Templar arrests, crashes in the Andes and Moscow, an eerie lightning strike at 13:13, a brutal market drop, Buffalo's freak October snow, and the Costa Concordia disaster—then test them against base rates and bias. Some studies hint at higher incident rates, others don't; what's consistent is our selective attention. Even the economy reacts, with estimates of hundreds of millions lost as people skip flights and delay plans. Fear has a footprint, and it shows up in both memory and money. So what do we do with a day like this? We suggest a reset: treat Friday the 13th as a live experiment in critical thinking and community. Keep the fun rituals if they calm your nerves, but pair them with better questions, clearer data, and shared stories that reclaim the narrative. With two Friday the 13ths in 2026 and the close pass of asteroid Apophis in 2029, curiosity beats dread every time. If our choices write the ending, let's make it a good one.Enjoy the ride? Often people involved in accidents will tell us that the process of accident investigation was far more stressful and even traumatic than the experience of the accident. Our models and methods of investigation end up causing more harm than good to people. In this video, we will learn how to reconcile trauma, healing and learning in an accident investigation not only from the point of view of those involved but also for those responsible for investigating the accidents. How do we reconcile learning and healing? Give this podcast a listen. This video follows from my years of research and practice and a book that I have recently published titled, Are We Learning from Accidents? The book is based on the true story of the passenger ship Costa Concordia that went aground and resulted in the death of 32 people off the coast of Italy in 2012. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

On the 13th of January, 2012 the Italian cruise ship Costa Concordia struck a rocky outcropping off the coast of Italy. The ship lost power and propulsion, and came to rest on its starboard side, just meters from the island of Giglio. Panic and chaos ensued on board, with over 4000 passengers and 1000 crew. Captain Francesco Schettino altered the planned course of his ship to perform a sail-by salute, close to Giglio, without informing Costa operations. His mistress, Moldovan dancer Domnica Cemortan, was on the bridge at the time of the accident. Twenty-seven passengers and five crew were killed in the accident, and countless more were injured. Schettino and other deck officers abandoned the helpless ship well before all the passengers were off the ship, earning him the nickname, "Captain Coward." Don't be your own hero, be your own scapegoat. In this one, Ian and Liv talk about the salvaging, investigation, and trial for the Costa Concordia Shipwreck. What becomes of the wrecked cruise ship? What evidence does the investigation uncover? Who is formally charged with causing the disaster? Does the video quality look better than it did in Part 1? We hope so. Also, Liv tries to shame Ian with words. Ian creates a clothing brand for the delusional.
The batteries aren't supposed to get wet. Season 6 is here! Also, we have video! In this first episode of a two part series, Ian and Liv talk about the sinking of the cruise ship Costa Concordia. In 2012, a Mediterranean cruise struck a rock bed just off the coast of a small island near Tuscany. The ship, after sinking on an underwater cliff, came to rest while it was half above/half under the water. How did this happen, and how did everyone on board react when the ship began sinking? Also, Liv claims to have experience as a sailor. Ian bought the drink package.

This week we talk about a ship that really shouldn't have sank. And to do so on Friday the 13th is a wild coincidence. The ship Costa Concordia was captained by a most cowardly man known as Francesco Schettino. When you learn of this terrible misshap you will hate him as much as we do. On the edge of Isola del Giglio the Costa Cruises company suffered a great lose but just blaming this on negligence is not enough. It's been a while since we did an episode with such cartoonish levels of bloodshed and awful behaviour. No joke. This is next level inhumane nonsense here, folks. On today's episode: We'll see what happens to the body after spinning around an ocean-going paddle wheel, we'll see how much woman and children were worth in a disaster before the 1900s, and you'll find out how bizarre it feels to be stabbed while presumedly waiting to sexually assault drowning victims. And if you were listening on Patreon, you'd also learn how not to become a scurvy-riddled corpse, you'll hear about the drunk driving death of the most isolated tree on Earth, we'll see how many maggots or worms it would take to press into a porterhouse steak, we'll discuss the worst, most blood-soaked maritime shipboard punishments, and we'll even cover the tragicomic clown show that was the Costa Concordia crash of 2005.I've said more than a thing or two here that might give you pause - but let me also tell you, by the time this thing is done, there's gonna be a parade! Also, I shout out a bunch of new Patreon supporters, but I want to remind you all that there is more than enough room in my heart for all of you. I love and appreciate you all. It's astounding that with the exceptional navigational equipment aboard a cruise ship can run aground in the 21st century, and 32 passengers and crew can lose their lives within a thousand feet of land. Such is the power of incompetence and cowardice.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
