In this episode, Brandi is joined by Erna Kim Hackett (@liberatedtogether) to explore the concept of virginity, its cultural implications, its theological roots and how it separates us from ourselves, others, and inhibits our relationship with God...maybe just not how we thought it would. Erna Kim Hackett is the founder and leader of Liberated Together where she creates community for Women of Color, Queer WOC, and non-binary folks who have been shaped by Christianity to explore liberated and embodied theology, decolonized approaches to social justice, and radical solidarities across ethnic lines. Let's get real about therapy! Dr. Money joins us to discuss "Ep 27 When Therapy is Not Enough." We get into Black Femininst Narrative Therapy, what it is, and how Dr. Money uses it in her practice. We discuss systemic suffering masquerading as mental illness, the ethics of involuntary hospitalization, and how everyone thinks they're sicker than they actually are. Dr. Money also answers your listener questions!Dr. Montinique "Money" McEachern (her/she) is a Black lesbian healer with her own practice, Combahee Therapy, based in what is now called Philadelphia, but is the original home of the Lenape people. She is the oldest child of her momma, and grew up surrounded with the stories of Black women, so it is no surprise that her therapeutic approach merges Black feminism and Narrative Therapy. She is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist and has a PhD in MFT as well. We have a *hilarious* conversation with actor Erica Luttrell (Lost Girl; Salvation; Mayans M.C.), who voices lesbian icon Sapphire on Steven Universe! Back when she was younger, Erica made a point of differentiating between her platonic female crushes (Gillian Anderson) and her non-platonic male crushes (you will genuinely never guess who). But the formative experience of seeing Shakespeare in Love brought up some feelings she could no longer ignore, and kicked off a five-ish year internal struggle with her sexuality. Erica reads some GLORIOUS journal entries from that time in her life, and discusses how she eventually grew to identify as "homoromantic demi-pansexual" (but also just "gay"). Plus, she shares how she *still* gets cast almost exclusively in make-out-with-a-dude roles, even after publicly coming out! WHAT'S IT GONNA TAKE, HOLLYWOOD?!?Follow Erica everywhere at @shukrani.

It's deeply embarrassing for a queer podcast to go 3+ years without featuring the founder of an animal rescue, but that all ends TODAY! Natalie Garcia lost her dog Maggie Mae in an unthinkable accident, but the tragedy inspired her to create MaeDay Rescue. Eleven years later, MaeDay is one of the most popular rescues in Los Angeles - in fact, it's where Nicole got Dobby! Eventually we manage to pull ourselves away from talking about dogs long enough to dig into Natalie's coming out story, which begins at the tender age of fourteen. Natalie discusses being part of her high school's "popular straight girls group," and how coming out set her off on a different path from those friends. She also shares the VERY dramatic story of reconnecting with her high school girlfriend years later, and the time she and her date found out they were actually related. Social activist Suad Abdul Khabeer said on Twitter, “You don't have to be the voice for the voiceless, just pass the mic.” So today, I want to pass the mic to some queer, BIPOC voices that have made an incredible impact on my understanding of this concept. I wanted to start with Intersectionality matters - is a podcast hosted by Kimberlé Crenshaw, an American civil rights advocate and a leading scholar of critical race theory. Next I wanted to highlight, Sessions with my therapists - podcast about two dope Black women who found healing and happiness through therapy. Angela is queer and they're both so open and comfortable it's like listening in on a friend's conversation. The podcast Nancy is also really dope - Queer, Asian Americans Kathy Tu and Tobin Low share really great, personal stories and have some really cool guests on there. The Queer Arabs podcast is a growing collection of dialogues surrounding the intersection of Middle Eastern/Southwest Asian + North African and LGBTQ identities. Recording in English and Arabic, with hosts based in the US and guests based all over, the podcast highlights queer artists, activists, and others who speak on behalf of racial justice, gender liberation, and sex positivity. Food 4 Thot A roundtable discussion podcast wherein a multiracial mix of queer writers talk sex, relationships, race, identity, what they like to read, and who they like to read. The red nation podcast The Red Nation Podcast features discussions on Indigenous history, politics, and culture from a left perspective. QueerWOC is a space for queer women and folks of color rooted in reimagining healing, organizing, and community. These podcasts are just a few examples of incredible content presented by Black, Indigenous, People of Color. If you have any other media or content suggested by voices that you believe deserve the spotlight, please don't hesitate to reach out and share those with me so I can feature them on our Instagram. We said it once and we’ll say it again, and again, and again. BLACK LIVES MATTER! This week we continue with last week’s discussion about how Latinos need to do better in the fight for black liberation. We discuss what is race and how it is not the same as ethnicity, the difference between how Mexico & USA look at racism, and how we are calling out racism in our community. J & Lesly also continue their conversation with Laisa & Jackie about their Latinx experience with racism and conversations they're having with family and friends. We hope this episode is enabling those white passing latinos to do some internal work and really go full out for support of black lives. This isn’t an easy conversation for anyone and we understand. But enough is enough. We need to do better and be better. Remember, colonization didn’t happen overnight and neither will dismantling its structures. But together, we can do anything. It all starts with a conversation. Isake and Kirya giggle a lot with our guest, storyteller, and musician Be Steadwell. We talk about her new album, Succulent, what is getting us through in the midst of a wild world, and what we are imagining things could be.
BLACK LIVES MATTER. PERIOD. GTFO if you disagree. In this political climate people have asking Black Americans how to end racism and it's time we take accountability for our own actions and advance the cause. As Latinx people we have run into our fair share of racism and anti-blackness in our community and we are here to call you out. If you are doing the work on the ground, great! But this episode is aimed toward the white passing latinx people who are anti-black and use the "POC" acronym to protect themselves from scrutiny. Join J & Lesly for PART 1 with our two guests, Jackie & Laisa, as we discuss own problematic pasts, how they are working to decolonize their mindset, how are they breaking the cycle of racism with their loved ones and how we teach our relatives and friends that black lives matter. This will be part 1 out of 2. Next week will be posting part 2. Hope you enjoy! They played sad songs for 24 people who did not suffer from any kind of mood disorder and 12 (thats HALF) showed substantial differences in experienced depression after listening to the sad music. They perceived more rejection from “neutral” faces and rated faces overall more sad/angry, perceiving this sadness/anger as directed at them.
