This week, Stauney and Sadie introduce the dark origins of nursery rhymes. While these seemingly innocent songs have become a staple of childhood, many were born from grim histories of plagues, political unrest, and even tragedy. From "Ring Around the Roses," believed to reference the Black Death, to "Humpty Dumpty," originally a cannon that fell during battle, and "Mary, Mary, Quite Contrary," thought to reflect religious persecution during Queen Mary I's reign, these rhymes hold hidden stories far darker than their playful tunes suggest. Join Stauney and Sadie as they delve into the twisted roots of these timeless verses, uncovering the unsettling truths behind the rhymes that shaped generations. Learn more about your ad choices. Mardi is the dreamer behind Quite Contrary Flower Farm, located an hour east of Melbourne on the fringe of Gippsland where the city meets the country. Local, Abundant and Whimsical are the words Mardi uses to describe the flowers that she grows on the family farm alongside her husband, parents, very naughty dog and far too many chickens. The crops include David Austin and other garden roses, dahlias, and a curated collection of annuals that change with the seasons. After a few years full of mistakes, drought, and floods, the flowers are thriving and the farm is growing expanding its offerings each year.

Oh, sing again of her, The shield maiden of the cross She free of vanity Her battlefield she crossed. Oh, tell again of her courage Her humble peasant faith That placed heaven itself into her arms And quieted that debate. How swift of foot that noble soul An eagle high that yields to the wind How she soared, to follow Him, and How she still flies, soaring, By His side. Her eyes may pierce the fallen Her eyes so like her Sons, She has been given leave to bring warning, To every country, every people, everyone. She calls us little children, For the expanses of her heart In knowing and Loving Christ, To us would seem Frightful Depths, And we would miss its delight… That even this great Lady, Is but a dove in the Lord's magnificence, She is our shield maiden of eternity, And is defiant to all our indifference.

Artist Melissa Belanger's desire to be contrary is rooted in her childhood. Her mother was supportive but didn't like candy, Halloween, and dolls, which Melissa adores. Melissa created all of her costumes. One of her most memorable was cardboard butterfly wings paired with a snowsuit. Halloweens were often cold in her Wisconsin hometown. Melissa loved her time as a middle school art teacher. She pushed her students to explore as many mediums as possible and to focus on process over outcome. She was amazed by the skill of her students and how open their minds were. Before going full-time in art, she also worked in a bookstore and an art gallery. Melissa is passionate about travel. She enjoys checking out places she's seen in movies or heard about in songs. In Ostend, Belgium, she checked out the resort from the 1971 European vampire classic, Daughters of Darkness. Watching tourists on the boardwalk reminded her of Edward Gorey's paintings. She's a fan of artist James Ensor (1860-1949), who painted carnivals, puppets, and masks. While in Belgium, she visited his apartment and his mother's curiosity shop. It was there she spotted her first Fiji mermaid. Her parents bestowed upon her a love of history and literature. Both find their way into her paintings. The twisted stories of Elizabeth Bathory, Fox Sisters, witch hunts, and the Donner Party inspire her to create. Melissa admits it is tricky to describe her paintings. They are so cute she almost wants to dislike them. Her paintings have playful colors and textures. Melissa enjoys playing around with different themes and eras and mashing them all together. Her characters often hint that they are about to do something naughty. An outfit, movie, or song will help her focus on a theme for an art show. Melissa loves cocktails and to entertain. She intentionally sets up her art show booths as lounges to encourage people to hang out. One of her favorite drinks is a Corpse Reviver. Her husband, Joe, is a great booth assistant. He'll even wear short lederhosen to get into character. Better Homes and Gardens Holiday Crafts magazine has included Melissa's work in multiple issues. On episode 20 of HGTV's Crafters Coast to Coast, she shared how to make a black cat bobblehead and a pumpkin pillow. Melissa shared the secret that several dolls played the part of the black cat. You can see the show at: https://watch.hgtv.com/tv-shows/crafters-coast-to-coast/full-episodes/bobbleheads-zombie-dolls-faux-tombstones-pumpkin-pillow. Melissa wrapped up the interview with two of her favorite quotes: "Remember, never take no cut-offs and hurry along as fast as you can" - Anna Khomina (Donner-Reed Party and the Winter of 1846) "No matter what, expect the unexpected. And whenever possible BE the unexpected" - author Lynda Barry. Visit Melissa’s website: http://www.melissabelanger.com

And, apparently, you're missing out! For the Native American tribes in the Puget Sound, where cockles used to be abundant, they're a treasured treat: meatier, sweeter, and richer-tasting than other shellfish. But they're also disappearing, and no one knows why—or how to save them. This episode, we join the team of intrepid marine biologists and tribal leaders on a mission to restore the cockle, on a journey that involves cockle viagra, a cockle vampire, and some carefully choreographed simultaneous spawning. Listen in now for a story of shellfish science and cultural history that will warm the cockles of your heart—and perhaps inspire the revival of other indigenous foods.

Welcome to the Super Simple Healthy Podcast! This is Christina Moyes. Got Milk? Got Cheese? Got disease? It has been touted as healthy and one of the essential food groups, necessary for developing strong bones and teeth and preventing osteoporosis. But, there are many who say that dairy does more harm than good. Can consuming dairy products lead to serious health problems? That’s what I’ll be talking about in today’s episode. Dairy, Dairy, Quite Contrary Dairy has been listed as one of the major food groups on the USDA food pyramid for as long as I can remember. So HOW could anyone say it’s not good for you? First, we’ll examine the purpose of dairy, then some of the concerns around it, what steps you can take to decide if it’s right for you and finally how to really build strong bones. Let’s start by examining cow’s milk as that is the basis for most dairy products we consume in the U.S. The purpose of any animal’s milk, human or otherwise, is to help their babies grow bigger. Cow’s milk is intended to help a baby calf grow from 90lbs at birth to a 1000lb heifer in just two years! Compare that to humans who are 6-8 lbs at birth and take 20 years to grow to full maturity at 100-200lbs. Milk is a medium for transporting insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1), which is strongly implicated in prostate cancer, colorectal cancer, premenopausal breast cancer and lung cancer. In nine separate studies, the most consistent dietary factor linked with prostate cancer was a high consumption of milk or dairy products. Other studies have proven that dairy products are a leading cause in problems like irritable bowel syndrome, obesity, mineral, nutrient, and amino acid deficiencies. And even more studies have shown that, in countries that consume little or no dairy, rates of osteoporosis are much lower than here in the U.S.! As this is a 5-minute healthy bite – there are many more details around this subject in my latest newsletter. Feel free to hop on and subscribe at www.supersimplehealthy.com. Did I ever mention that when I was a kid, I was the best milk-drinker in my house? I also started having bad acne at the age of 9 that didn’t stop until I was almost 30yrs old. And that’s because I started on a new skin care system that managed the symptoms of the acne, but didn’t heal the source of the problem. Up until about 5yrs ago, I ate dairy on a regular basis. I ate everything from milk twice a day to cheese, yogurt, cottage cheese, cream cheese and sour cream. I also suffered congestion every morning and chronic fatigue. By themselves, these symptoms may not seem like a big deal. But these are indications of inflammation within the body. When you have a cold or a skin problem – a rash, rosacea, acne, psoriasis that is your body trying to expel toxins! When we suppress these symptoms with over the counter drugs we are literally pushing them back into our system. Take the hint and play detective. Look at your diet and lifestyle and make some adjustments. To determine whether dairy is something you personally want to avoid, try taking it out of your diet for 2 weeks. You will need to take out ALL dairy products, not just milk. After 2 weeks, try having a glass of milk with a meal or a cheeseburger, but don’t overdue. You may not have an immediate reaction. Symptoms of dairy sensitivity can show up anywhere from an hour to 72 hours later. For a complete list of symptoms to watch for, visit my website at www.supersimplehealthy.com/downloads. The good news is, a food sensitivity CAN be healed over time. It does not mean you can NEVER enjoy dairy again. For additional support around this or other health related issues, visit my website and click on “schedule now” to set up an appointment either in person or over the phone. And last but not least, to build strong bones, focus on these 4 Simple things: Don’t smoke, avoid excessive alcohol, limit caffeine and increase exercise! Until next time: Keep it simple. Be Healthy.

I must have been 12 or so when I first saw the Pansy Division. The band was opening for Green Day at a benefit show in Oakland, a return to the Bay Area following the triumphant Dookie tour. I had no idea what to make of the band at the time — and my dad, who’d kindly agreed to chaperone, was, I believe amused. He may or may not have said, “don’t tell your mother about this.” But that was always the Pansy Division’s MO — in your face sexuality backed by songwriting that rarely took itself seriously. The band no doubt blew the minds of young teens all across the country as the opening act for the soon to be biggest rock band in the world, and it appeared to have a hell of a time doing it. This year marks the group’s quarter-century anniversary, a milestone it celebrated with Quite Contrary, its first album in seven years, which is both celebratory and reflective, featuring a cover shot in the same room that graced the band’s seminal 1996 album Wish I'd Taken Pictures, starring the same two cover models. Frontman Jon Ginoli already did a thorough job reflecting on the band and its influence in his wonderful 2009 memoir, Deflowered: My Life in Pansy Division, but a twenty-fifth anniversary offers yet another opportunity to recognize how far he, his band and the world around them have come in the last few decades. We sat down at a cafe in Manhattan following a recent appearance in the city to discuss the band, its music and mission.
On this episode of the podcast, editor Jim Testa chats with Chris Freeman of Pansy Division about the gay punk band's remarkable 25th anniversary, their new album "Quite Contrary," and the band's legacy in the gay community and beyond. Pansy Division will be at Sunnyvale in Brooklyn on Saturday, Sept. 24

Synopsis Olivia wants the 80 acres in far off Michigan that her father's will left to whichever of his offspring claims the land. As Olivia says, "I'm sprung off him just as much as Avis or Tobey."The problem: she's seventeen, female, and it's 1841.Mourning Free, Olivia's trusted childhood friend, knows how to run a farm and is also sorely in need of a new start in life. The problem: though born in a free state, he's the orphaned son of runaway slaves and the slave catchers who patrol the north hunting fugitives are not particular about who they take back south with them. Not without qualms, they set off together. All goes well, despite the drudgery of survival in an isolated log cabin. Incapable of acknowledging her feelings for Mourning, Olivia thinks her biggest problem is her unrequited romantic interest in their young neighbor.Until her world falls apart.Strong-willed, vulnerable, and compassionate, Olivia is a compelling protagonist on a journey to find a way to do the right thing in a world in which so much is wrong. Excerpt A few days later Olivia walked down to the bank of the Saugauta River. It was a warm day in May, the sky a startling blue, the fields dotted with yellow and purple wildflowers. She spread a red and white checkered tablecloth over a patch of clover and knelt on one corner of it. A gentle breeze played with the cloth, so she anchored two other corners with her rag doll and picnic basket. She was humming “Mary, Mary, Quite Contrary” to her doll when she heard someone slosh out of the river. She looked up, amazed to see Mourning Free climbing up the bank, his scrawny chest bare and his trousers dripping. He was carrying his shoes in one hand and a brown shirt and blue cloth bag in the other. “Hullo, Mourning,” Olivia said, eyes wide. “Hullo to you, Livia.” He walked over and tossed his belongings to the ground. “Did you fall into the river?” “Nah. Been gettin’ cleaned up. Heard someone come and thought I’m a have to hide down there. Then I hear it just be you, talkin’ to your stupid doll.” “Do you want to have a tea party with us?” She reached for her doll and pulled it back to her lap, making room for him to join her on the tablecloth. “You got any food ain’t make-believe?” She opened the picnic basket and arranged chunks of cheese, a few slices of bread, and two apples on a white linen napkin. Mourning sank to his knees, making large wet circles on the cloth, grabbed some cheese and bread, and filled his mouth. “Ain’t et nothing for two days,” he mumbled, cheeks bulging. “Who were you hiding from?” “Everybody.” He swallowed and reached for more bread and cheese, but hesitated, glancing at his hostess. “It’s okay,” Olivia said and leaned away from the food. “You can have it all. I thought they took you away.” He bit into a chunk of cheese and sat back on his heels. “That right. But I run away from ’em. Been walkin’ for three days.” This announcement left Olivia frowning. She watched him eat for a few moments before asking, “But who’s going to take care of you?” “Me.” He jerked his thumb at his bare chest. “I can take as good care a myself as them Carters ever done.” “Why, were they mean to you?” He tilted his head back and grinned. “That what Goody think folks gonna say.” Then he looked straight at Olivia, his expression serious. “No, Goody always give me a good tanning when I got it comin’, but they ain’t never treated me bad. But they got four kids without me. That

From 1940 to 1945 the Channel Islands were the only part of Britain to fall under Nazi occupation. German anti-Jewish decrees became part of the Islands’ legal structures. Local police and government officials identified and registered the few remaining Jews. Jewish property was Aryanized and Jews were deported, all with the knowing involvement of government officials who remained officially loyal to the British Crown. This lecture examines both the legal and moral failures and the ambiguities which surrounded this little known part of British Jewish history. (This paper was given on 7 March 2013 at the German Historical Institute London as part of the European Leo Baeck Lecture Series London, 2013.)
