Sugardrive were a formative influence on me and I was beyond thrilled when my friend Kerry-Anne Allerston hooked me up with Paul, singer of this legendary South African band. Their debut, 'Hey God It's Me Again' made a massive impact on all of us, and 'Sand.Mand.Sky' is a bona fide classic record. The song 'Disco Lazarus' off third album 'When I Died I Was Elvis' took them to new heights with extensive national airplay. No wonder they headlined Oppikoppi multiple years running, they were just untouchable live.We talked right through their career and Paul was astute, well-spoken and a real laugh throughout. Also, he remembered everything really clearly, which was a real treat. This episode is a proper full circle moment and I am super proud to be able to have recorded it. Thank you so much to Paul and Kerry-Anne for making this happen. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Ruston Kelly with Sasha Alex Sloan

On this week's Talkhouse Podcast we've got a pair of songwriters who've both been through some tough times and emerged all the better for them: Ruston Kelly and Sasha Alex Sloan. There was no disguising the fact that Ruston Kelly's third album, last year's The Weakness, was deeply informed by his divorce from singer-songwriter Kacey Musgraves, with lines like “My marriage ended and I moved up north to mend.” But the album isn't weepy or wallowing; in fact, it's musically the most lively piece of Kelly's catalog so far, sonically bigger and wider than anything he's done before. It's one of those close-one-door-and-other-opens kind of records, at times contemplative—he once cheekily described his music as “self-help rock”—but also not afraid to be playful and catchy. The other half of today's conversation is Kelly's pal Sasha Alex Sloan, whose early career was kind of pop-focused. She had a co-write on a Juice WRLD song and did a huge duet with Sam Hunt that's alluded to in today's chat. But in spite of her pop leanings, Sloan's music always has an undercurrent of self-examination. She left the major label that had released her first two albums recently and fully embraced a more inward-looking style for the new Me Again, which leans toward simplicity more than her past records. It's still catchy as hell, of course, just with a more mature edge. The album also features a duet with Ruston Kelly on the fading-relationship song “Falling Out Of Like.” Check it out. In this candid conversation, Kelly and Sloan talk about the vulnerability of making music—and how Sloan is handling the anxiety of putting out a less pop-oriented set of songs. Kelly talks about the pros and cons of a recent stripped-down tour he did, and they both reflect on the challenges of opening for bigger artists. We also get thoughts on nicotine, Shark Tank, and more. Enjoy. 0:00 – Intro 2:22 – Start of the chat 6:40 – On parental TMI 13:37 – Sloan's concerns about whether her new record is as commercial as her past work 24:05 – Kelly's recent bare-bones tour, and what he learned 31:50 – "I feel icky talking out financial sh-t as an artist" 41:03 – “There were some 14 year olds there. There are braces happening. I'm up here singing about hardcore drug addiction.” Thanks for listening to the Talkhouse Podcast, and thanks to Ruston Kelly and Sasha Alex Sloan for chatting. Hello Listeners! In this episode, we had the opportunity to have a conversation with Sasha Alex Sloan Sasha Born and raised in the Boston area, writing songs as a teenager and was accepted to the prestigious Berklee College of Music, but her schooling was cut short when, at 19, she signed a publishing deal and moved to Los Angeles. Sloan released her first EPs, Sad Girl, Loser, and Self-Portrait in quick succession, followed by her first two albums, Only Child and I Blame the World. Last year, a month after she played Coachella, Sloan announced that she was leaving her major label and going independent, news that would surprise anyone observing her from the outside, thinking she'd really made it. Written and recorded in Nashville, where she now lives with her husband and their many pets, Sloan's third album, Me Again is a self-portrait. Aside from a few collaborative sessions with choice songwriters she trusted, like Joy Williams (the Civil Wars) and Ruston Kelly, Sloan wrote the entire album with her husband, King Henry, picking up a guitar or scribbling down a lyric as they went about their life as a couple. Sloan was determined that the instrumentation not distract from the plainspoken admissions in her lyrics, making the album feel like a conversation between intimates. Primary Scripture: Mark 7:18-23Song of the Week: 'ME AGAIN'© Mark D. Ingram / RevWrite MusicIn this week's 'Words of Life' broadcast / podcast in lieu of eternity, Pastor Mark invites you on a celestial journey, from the onset of sin to the light of salvation, through the prism of an eclipse. We delve into the heart of our spiritual struggle, grasping the truth JESUS explained to those who would listen that 'defilement' originates not simply from the fallen world around us, but primarily from within. Within the 2nd synoptic gospel (Mark), we navigate what religious and ritual hypocrisy looks like when it threatens to interfere with our daily walk with GOD.Through the lens of personal anecdotes and scriptural context, we uncover the pitfalls of counterfeit worship and the essence of a relationship with God built on sincerity and truth. Pastor Mark shares a poignant anecdote of misguided piety, reminding us that our actions must resonate with the spirit of our Creator. This episode isn't just about recognizing our flaws; it's a call to genuine self-reflection and a reminder of the daily need for confession, rooted in the hope and redemption offered by Jesus Christ, our only mediator to the Almighty. In closing, we gather in prayerful meditation, acknowledging our human frailty and the ceaseless grace of God. Pastor Mark's heartfelt invocation stirs within us a longing to fulfill our role as beacons of light and salt in a world in need of His love and guidance. With 'the total eclipse of our hearts' reconciled through GOD'S gracious gift of JESUS, eternal hope is a reality. This week's broadcast / podcast isn't simply a message; it's an invitation to stand with us, in the fullness of frailty,  faith, and humility, as we aspire to live in the warmth of His eternal promise. Join us in this episode for a stirring call to foster the personal and profound relationship with our Savior that will sustain us since JESUS alone, is the only Mediator able to 'blot out' the total eclipse of our hearts for eternity.Support the showIn lieu of eternity, sermons and musical artists are featured to extol JESUS CHRIST as the sole hope for the eternal souls of humanity.

Like you got to do it. Like the worst thing that can happen is somebody can say no, but if you believe in yourself and you believe in the product that you're putting out, why wouldn't you do it?”“Don't live out of fear. And don't let anybody control anybody's thoughts or opinions, opinion control what you know, you need to do, or who you are as a person. Don't let anybody have that power.”“Invest in yourself, if you don't invest in yourself, how is somebody else going to invest in you?”“Love the process, not the result. When you love the process of everything, the results will always happen. But it's not the result. Because when you audition for something, you're going to get told no more than you're going to get told yes. But if you love the hustle, if you love work, if you love putting it together, if you love that energy, you will have success. The minute you stop loving the process is the minute you need to reevaluate.”Resources:Women in MusicVoice StrawWhere to find Mindy:Instagram: @mindypackMindy's Website: www.mindypack.comVoice Straw: www.voicestraw.com (use code brokenglass for 10% off!)Broken Glass MediaWebsite: www.brokenglassmediallc.comBlog: www.brokenglassmediallc.com/thebrokenglassblogInstagram: @brokenglassmediaTwitter: @brokenglassblogFacebook: @brokenglassmediallc

Adventurous, resilient, independent, quirky and funny - just a few words to describe this week's remarkable guest!    Join us for this fun, inspiring and insightful episode of the Secrets of Confident Podcast, where Jodie interviews Wendy Pettifer - a qualified psychotherapist, author of the blog “How to be Me Again” and the GM of Disability Services in Sydney.    Wendy has worked most of her career in the Health and Services Industry, primarily with Not-for-Profits who align well with her core values and this week, she talks with Jodie about rebuilding her confidence after the breakdown of a relationship that lasted half her lifetime AND dealing with the confidence-destroying effects of an unexpected redundancy.    Don't miss this incredible interview and find out:  - how you can be a confident woman, but also concurrently suffer and be treated for depression and anxiety;  - why dancing on the tables in pubs made her a great candidate for a boardroom;  - how she rebuilt her sense of family after the breakdown of a 21 year relationship and the heartbreak of her son moving overseas to study;  - how the loss of friendships can create a terrible fear of thinking you are “intrinsically unlikeable”;  - why Wendy believes financial independence is SO important, especially for women over 50;  - how she managed to deal with her unexpected redundancy AND the end of her marriage in the same fortnight.    Wendy's confidence and the personal confidence techniques that she's had to call on at different stages in her life have helped her get through adversity, challenges and life traumas and they can help you too because they really are secrets of a truly confident woman.     There are so many amazing nuggets of experience, insight and relatedness in this interview so this is definitely not an episode that you want to miss. PLUS find out why Wendy has our business name tattooed on her body... ;)   x Jodie & Anastasia RiseWomen.com

EPISODE DETAILS: PART ONE In celebration of Father's Day Scott and Paul discuss the influence their dads had on their musical development. Plus, you'll hear a recording of Paul's late dad, Dr. Tom Duncan, singing his only known original song! PART TWO - 09:13 mark Woody Bomar's in-depth interview SYNOPSIS Scott sits down in Nashville with his dad to get the story about how one of Roy Orbison's bandmates became Woody's guardian angel; why he got shot at on the way to a gig; how he went from pitching Kris Kristofferson's songs to writing #1 hits of his own; why he signed a young teenager named Taylor Swift to her first publishing deal; the reason he says his first cut might actually be his last; and what inspired him to write an album's worth of songs about Route 66 after an exciting career working with country music's biggest names.  ABOUT WOODY BOMAR Woody Bomar began his music career as a songwriter, landing two #1 hits with Conway Twitty’s “We Did But Now You Don’t” and Jim Glaser’s “You’re Getting to Me Again.” He hit the Top 20 with Loretta Lynn’s “Cheatin’ on a Cheater” and had songs recorded by Lee Greenwood, Lynn Anderson, TG Sheppard, Rhonda Vincent, Hank Williams, Jr., and others. Bomar eventually moved to the other side of the desk at Nashville’s Combine Music, where his duties included promoting the songs of Kris Kristofferson, Dolly Parton, Guy Clark, Tony Joe White, and others. Woody soon departed and teamed with business partner Kerry O’Neil to launch Little Big Town Music with former Combine writers John Scott Sherrill and Bob DiPiero. Serving as President and General Manager, Bomar would go on to sign a stable of songwriters that earned fifteen #1 hits, as well as thirty Top 10 singles and more than 500 major cuts by artists such as Faith Hill, George Strait, Tim McGraw, Reba McEntire, Diamond Rio, Kenny Chesney, Waylon Jennings, Vince Gill, Neil Diamond, Dusty Springfield and Peter Frampton. Little Big Town was ultimately purchased by Sony/ATV, which hired Bomar as Senior Vice President and General Manager. During his eight year tenure with Sony, Woody signed Dierks Bentley, Rascal Flatts, Josh Turner, Marty Stuart and Blake Shelton, and was instrumental in bringing Taylor Swift, Gretchen Wilson, Eric Church and Miranda Lambert to the company’s roster. In addition to the new signings, Woody worked with an existing catalog of songs by Tom Douglas, Dean Dillon, Rodney Crowell, Gretchen Peters, Bobby Braddock, Merle Haggard, Willie Nelson, Hank Williams, and many others. After departing Sony/ATV Woody  launched his second independent publishing company, Green Hills Music Group, where he continues to advocate for great songwriters and secure recordings by artists such as George Strait, Luke Bryan, Jake Owen, Rascal Flatts, Hunter Hayes, and Hilary Scott of Lady Antebellum. Woody is a two-time recipient of The Nashville Songwriters Association’s President’s Award and is an inductee into the Middle Tennessee State University’s Mass Communications Wall of Fame.

YouKnowIGotSoul is finally back with a brand new podcast. We used some cool technology this time around, but it came with some minor technical difficulties (which will be fixed in future episodes!!) In the future, you will have the opportunity to not only see the YouKnowIGotSoul team on camera, but you'll also have the chance to participate live on our podcast. More details on that to follow in the future but in the meantime... In this episode of the podcast, we talk about some of the latest releases in R&B including Tweet's new album "Charlene". The album is actually the first official release from Tweet since her "It's Me Again" which came out in 2005. "Charlene" is led by the single "Magic". We also talk about Mya's new album "Smoove Jones" which quietly came out last week. Mya hasn't put out an official album in a minute, but she's back with a new project that she funded by herself. We also talk about Brian McKnight's new album "Better" and look at his current status in the industry today compared to someone like Joe who came out around the same time as him. The Urban AC charts is also discussed on this podcast. We make some points about the unusual appearances on the charts including artists like Adele, The Weeknd and Drake. Lastly we talk about some of the best songs to listen to when someone has broken up with you in a relationship. Edd believes Keith Sweat is the way to go, Tom believes it's all about Mobb Deep and Kyle is rolling with Mariah Carey.

Her undeniable talent, incredible voice, and striking beauty are the reasons she stands out from the rest and the reasons why she’s had staying power in the fickle, precarious music industry. Since emerging on the scene, songstress and songwriter Tweet, born Charlene Keys, has been a favorite for R&B music lovers. Now, after a six-year hiatus, she is back with her third studio album Charlene, a testament to her professional, personal, and emotional evolution. Charlene is more than just what some might call a “grown and sexy” album.  It’s a soulful, beautifully candid album that showcases Tweet’s dynamic vocals, and her artistic writing ability.  Charlene is food for the soul that will feed Tweet’s loyal fan base hungry for her return, and also pique the appetite of new fans with its powerful, expressive tracks delivered with passion and fervor, and a different, more mellow and poised sound than her previous hit albums, Southern Hummingbird and It’s Me Again. Smooth-talking heartthrob of VH1’s hit scripted series “Hit the Floor,” MCKINLEY FREEMAN hypnotized viewers as star basketball player ‘Derek Roman’ of the L.A. Devils and love interest of female lead Ahsha, portrayed by actress Taylour Paige. Born and raised outside of Chicago in the college town of Champaign, Illinois, McKinley started as a basketball player for the University of Illinois. From an all-star basketball player, he then found himself working for IBM doing worldwide marketing and business development. With these two completely different paths in hand, he then reached a crossroad in his life where he had to decide whether to stay where he was, or take the plunge to follow his heart, thus leading to his first audition where he landed a role on ABC’s “All My Children.

LOTL The Quiet Storm Welcomes The Southern Hummingbird TWEET . Debut her new Single           ( Enough )   Tweet burst on the music scene in 2002 with a boldness and sensuality that made people quickly pay attention. Her first single, “Oops (Oh My)” climbed to the top of the R&B/Hip-Hop charts and made the industry take notice with her sultry lyrics and hypnotic voice. Her look, her sound and her sexiness set new standards in the industry and all eyes were on her. Her follow-up single was the incredibly seductive “Call Me,” which again landed in the R&B/Hip-Hop Top 10 and garnered her an accompanying Verizon commercial. Her platinum selling debut album Southern Hummingbird , also spawned the fan favorites “Smoking Cigarettes,” “Motel” and “Boogie 2nite.” Tweet ' s effortlessly classic voice and innate ability to interpret songs quickly solidified her place in the industry. Tweet ' s 2005 album It ' s Me Again , led by the single “Turn of Da Lights,” gave her yet another Top 5 album. As with her previous album, she masterfully showcased her vocals on songs like “My Man” and “I'm Done.” The album peaked at No.2 on the Billboard R&B/Hip-Hop charts but faired better critically than commercially.
