My guest today is Ian Kerry who is a photographer and Hull enthusiast. And today's episode is a new direction for me as I take the microphone outside and travel 70 miles up the road from Sheffield to the Hessle Foreshore, sitting on a picnic bench taking in the view of the Humber Bridge. Ian, Gavin and I talk about the construction of the bridge and the effect of the bridge's arrival on the local community and the changes to the landscape and human relationships that the bridge brought about. We read a selection of Larkin's poems and prose and explore what the bridge and the wider Holderness area meant to Larkin.  You will hear some ambient noises in the background- the wind, people walking past, the occasional car and seagull- I hope it helps to set the scene rather than presents a distraction! We also hear PLS member Chris Sewart, reading Bridge for the Living in full. This was recorded on the other side of the river in Barton Upon Humber, with the south pillars of the bridge just behind us. Thank you Chris for taking the time to record this for us.Larkin poems discussed:Here, The Whitsun Weddings, Bridge for the Living, High Windows, Aubade, The Building, Friday Night in the Royal Station Hotel, AbsencesOther references:Ian's English teacher- Kate TordoffA Rumoured City https://www.amazon.co.uk/Rumoured-City-New-Poets-Hull/dp/090642741XWizard of Oz (1939 dir Victor Fleming)Monitor, Down Cemetery Road with Philip Larkin https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Coe11pgoj8EAlex Howard https://alexhoward.org/about/https://era.ed.ac.uk/handle/1842/35859Joe Riley https://podcasts.apple.com/ie/podcast/joe-riley-presents-the-whitsun-weddings/id1486735740?i=1000664101367Sketch Poetry podcast; https://open.spotify.com/show/4Ubm0zfLmjrOqVqMWulgf0https://www.theguardian.com/books/booksblog/2010/jun/24/hull-inspires-poets What fresh Hull is this?Philip Larkin's east Yorkshire home town has been called the most poetic city in England. This is the first ‘UK Property Market Stats Show' of 2025, the ‘Stat Show' is a weekly one-hour documentary report on YouTube. It is for the week ending Sunday, 12th January 2025, I am joined by this week's special guest, Ben Madden, an Estate Agent from West London to discuss the property market headlines for Week 1 of 2025. It must be stressed this is the first week of the year, and because the first full week started later than other years (on the 6th January 2025), some of the figures, when compared to previous years, are considerably higher than other years. This will settle down as the rest of January opens out. The main headlines this week though: · Listings (New properties coming on to the market) - 27.4k UK listings this week (week 1). 34% higher YTD than 2024 YTD. 35.6% higher YTD than 17/18/19 YTD · % of Resi Sales Stock being reduced (Monthly): 7.8% of Resi sales stock was reduced in December (this stat is monthly in arrears). 11.1% in November. 11.9% & 2024 average and long term 5 year average 10.6%. NB We always get a dip of this stat in December · Total Gross Sales - 19.2k UK homes sold stc this week (Week 1). 74% higher than the same standalone week (week 1) in 2024. Also, 11.2% higher than 2017/18/19 YTD levels. · Sale Thru rate (Monthly): UK Estate Agents sold 10.61% of their Resi sales stock in Dec '24 (Dec '23 - 8.79%). 2024 average is 15.3% & the 7 year long term average is 17.9% per month. · Sale fall-throughs - Agents lost 3.8% of their sales pipeline for the month of December (2024 average 5.36%). For the week 1, Sale Fall Thrus (as a % of Gross sales Agreed) increased to 33.0% (up from 25.7% from the last two months of 2024). This is normal with a glut of sale fall thrus coming out the Christmas & New Year break. The 7 year Long Term weekly Average is 24.2% and it was 40%+ in the two months following the Truss Budget in the Autumn of 2022. · Net Sales - 12.9k this week (average for week normally 7.7k). 88.9% higher than the same week 1 in 2024, 99.4% higher YTD in 2024 compared to YTD 17/18/19. · Resi Sales Stock on the Market (Monthly Stat) : 605k at end of December (down from 677k at end of Nov). For comparison, Dec '23 - 560k, Dec '22 - 481k, Dec '21 - 342k, Dec '20 - 543k, Dec '19 - 545k. · Resi Sales Sold STC Pipeline (Units) (Monthly Stat): 441k at end of December. For comparison, Dec '23 - 359k, Dec '22 - 373k, Dec '21 - 468k, Dec '20 - 548k, Dec '19 - 310k. · UK House Prices - As explained in the show, the £/sqft figure foretells and predicts the Land Registry 5 months in advance with an accuracy rating of 92%. Final December figures saw a slight drift in this important metric to £339/sq.ft. For comparison - Nov's £342/sq.ft, August's £334/sq.ft, and Dec '23 at £322/sq.ft. This means house prices have grown 5.28% in the last 12 months. · Average Rents in the UK * East Anglia: 2024 Average £1,387, Growth since 2016: 29.9% * East Midlands: 2024 Average £1,065, Growth since 2016: 45.5% * Inner London: 2024 Average £3,141, Growth since 2016: 26.0% * North East: 2024 Average £985, Growth since 2016: 29.9% * North West: 2024 Average £1,141, Growth since 2016: 42.1% * Northern Ireland: 2024 Average £927, Growth since 2016: 36.1% * Outer London: 2024 Average £1,943, Growth since 2016: 22.0% * Scotland: 2024 Average £1,116, Growth since 2016: 46.8% * South East: 2024 Average £1,796, Growth since 2016: 40.0% * South West: 2024 Average £1,629, Growth since 2016: 78.4% * Wales: 2024 Average £1,137, Growth since 2016: 50.4% * West Midlands: 2024 Average £1,125, Growth since 2016: 39.2% * Yorkshire & Humberside: 2024 Average £1,058, Growth since 2016: 39.8% Local Focus this week - Bath Graphs for personal use - https://we.tl/t-iBOpi3it6c

Stand and deliver: New industrial strategy must put the fizz back in UK manufacturing.

2024 was a mixed year, with some stellar announcements like Tata Group's gigafactory investment offset by the cancellation of Phase 2 of HS2 and a budget black hole to pay for, but an Industrial Strategy may give the industry the long-term stability it needs. This article is by Will Stirling The Chancellor Rachel Reeves received a boost a week before her Autumn Budget when the IMF revised its forecast for UK growth this year to 1.1% (up from 0.7% in July) and 1.5% in 2025 – the biggest upward revision for any advanced country. It's a sign of better things to come, and 2024 was not a banner year in manufacturing, more one defined by steady stability, yet it still notched up a few memorable headlines for British industry. Spiralling costs meant the previous Tory government cancelled Phase 2 of HS2 from Birmingham to Manchester, affecting hundreds of supply chain companies, which the new Labour government partly blamed for the cost overruns. The Secretary of State for Transport Louise Haigh launched an independent review to ensure lessons will be learned and the costs for HS2 are controlled. The cost of Phase 1, London to Birmingham, is expected to reach £66bn. Covid and the semiconductor-shortage-affected UK automotive sector got a fillip in February when Agratas, the battery division of Tata Group, confirmed a new £4bn battery gigafactory in Somerset. It was a relief for the car sector to see the UK stall on the global league table for gigafactory capacity, a key metric for car plant investment. While carmaking recovered strongly in 2023 after semiconductor supply returned, it is slowing down. By August, the UK had manufactured 522,833 cars, down 8.5% on production at the same point in 2023 when ythe figure was 571,671. Interestingly, year-to-date vehicles for the domestic UK market had increased by 12%, but exports, representing over 84% of all car production, were down 13.6%. The production of electric cars, including hybrids (EVs), fell by 26%. Automotive business group SMMT said this decline is expected to be reversed in the longer term as new models come on stream. Massive manufacturer discounting saved car sales in Europe in September, pushing BEV sales to 56,387 registrations. Siemens opened its new train factory in Goole, Humberside, in October and announced a further £40m in addition to the £200 investment in the Goole Rail Village, which will now bring up to 1,000 new jobs to the region, as well as around 1,700 supply chain job opportunities. In addition to maintaining the bogies from Siemens' 572 trains running in the UK, it will also include new production lines for assembling bogies for new trains, which will be the first for Siemens in the UK. Aerospace is battling delivery rate challenges: after Covid, orders poured in, and the industry is pulling on all levers to find ways to go above ‘Rate 60' into the consistent 80s or even 90 aircraft per month to reduce long delivery times. Ninety commercial aircraft were delivered in August, the highest in that month of the year since 2018. But that's not the whole story. While the global backlog of aircraft on order is 15,651 planes according to the industry group ADS - an extraordinary number - aircraft orders in the year-to-date are two-thirds behind 2023 levels. Perhaps it was a sign that Brexit was the past. The FA appointed Thomas Tuchel as the senior men's coach, causing gossip as the first German coach of the England football team. A week later, Britain and Germany signed a government-described “landmark' defence agreement to boost security, investment, and jobs. German defence giant Rheinmetall will build a new factory in the UK to make barrels for artillery guns, and German marine surveillance aircraft will supply patrols from RAF Lossiemouth. The factory will need British steel and will create 400 jobs. It's the first defence pact with Germany of this scale, although both countries already collaborate on making armoured vehicles, for example. In October, BAE Systems Maritime launched the sixth Astute class submarine, Agamemnon. Attention will soon switch to the multi-billion AUKUS submarine (SSN-A) programme, where the boats will be built in the UK and Australia. Fhaheen Khan, senior economist at Make UK says “Manufacturers this year experienced the most stable period of business conditions in almost a decade, despite still facing higher costs, tight interest rates and skills shortages.” While it could be seen as a year of two halves – the first six months boasting strong production, order books and investment intentions, and the second looking far more mixed due to an inevitable domestic market slowdown –manufacturers remain buoyant in their expectations.” h Accountants and business advisors are expecting more investment in the economy in 2025, following several years where major events and inflation have made business conditions that could be generally described as ‘sh*t'. Fhaheen Khan thinks the new 10-year industrial strategy is an important milestone in achieving economic growth, although some seasoned business leaders will say they have heard it all before. It's hard to remember, but the UK has had at least four official industrial strategies since the 2008/9 recession: in 2009 (Mandelson), 2012 (Vince Cable), 2017 (Greg Clark) and now in 2024. Khan says “It's highly encouraging that advanced manufacturing will be a key sector driving that growth, and the Industrial Strategy Council will help lay the pipework needed to modernise UK industry through the wide adoption of AI, computing, and techniques like 3D printing.” Of particular relevance to MTD readers, the numbers show that industries specialising in producing capital equipment like machinery, electronics and metal fabricators have experienced a positive year. This is due to strong exports to the US and the EU as many Western countries are investing in the kit to modernise their manufacturing – for example, the US's Inflation Reduction Act and, one could say, on the wave of ‘Make America Great Again'. Khan says “These subsectors have much to look forward to in 2025 as economic conditions stabilise further, inflation cools, and interest rates are loosened." The manufacturing technology expo MACH 2024 organisers said visitors were up 6% on the previous show and reported a good vibe. Greg Capp, sales director at EDM machinery firm Sodi-Tech, said: “Footfall has been the best in a long time. On Day One, we had enough enquiries for the next six months.” Overall, investment in manufacturing in 2023 (last full year) is up by 4% on 2022, from £40.24bn to £41.8m, and economists expect this to rise in 2024. Despite the numbers and late positivity, on the ground, some manufacturing machinery vendors and subcontractors report a frustrating year where the anticipated rush of orders failed to materialise. That flat confidence from 2022-2023 seemed to be overspilled into the year's first half. Andrea Wilson at deep hole drilling and boring engineering company Hone-All Precision says “2024 has been a challenging and varied year for most businesses. “Uncertainty and political instability have created conditions that have not been beneficial to business and have created barriers to growth. “The creation of the 10-year Industrial Strategy will hopefully give business and investors the confidence they have been lacking the last few years.” The new industrial strategy focuses on eight sectors: advanced manufacturing, clean energy industries, creative industries, defence, digital and technologies, financial services, life sciences, and professional and business services. High-tech, hard-tech, high-potential companies can benefit hugely from close government support. The top two sectors in the strategy are advanced manufacturing and clean energy industries. “Tokamak Energy does both!” says David Kingham, the executive vice chairman and a co-founder. He says that the company that designs, manufactures and operates a plant for nuclear fusion to generate power aims to accelerate the development of fusion energy, the most valuable technology of the 21st Century. “We were delighted to see the new consultation on the Industrial Strategy. A company like Tokamak Energy, with over 250 employees and global ambitions, can grow rapidly if we have consistent strong backing from the government.” The company has had spectacular success in recent years with the record-breaking ST40 high field compact spherical tokamak – which reached 100 million degrees Celsius plasma ion temperature, the threshold needed for commercial fusion energy. Its high-temperature superconducting (HTS) magnet development has also set records for magnetic field strength at a temperature of 20,000C. David says: “Our industrial strategy is to pursue fusion energy by assembling consortia around our core technologies to provide the complimentary capabilities necessary for the development and deployment of fusion. This will require major investment by governments and consortium partners, but the prize is the elusive goal of commercial fusion energy. The fastest achievable timeline for fusion is 10 years to a 50MW pilot plant, a goal set by the US Department of Energy milestone-driven fusion development program. “So a bold, consistent industrial strategy from the Government could enable the UK to have its fusion “cake” in the long term and “eat” the economic benefits of the magnet spin-off technology in the short to medium term.” In the supply chain, companies like Hone-All Precision want long-term stability, vision, and potential targeted support through programmes unafraid of ‘picking winners' that have previously blighted attempts to assist the industry within state aid rules. Managing Director Andrea Wilson says “The new Labour government must commit to long term strategic thinking and investment decisions, and the newly formed Industrial Council will hopefully achieve this.” “The council's success will be increased dramatically if it's informed by business leaders, owners, and most importantly, if it includes SME representation. The outcome of these two positive moves will hopefully result in us seeing the confidence and stability we all need to thrive.” Machine tool and machinery suppliers need orders, and for that, their customers need confidence to buy. Adrian Haller, managing director of Bruderer UK, a leading manufacturer of precision high-speed presses says “The UK has a fantastic opportunity in advanced engineering, and we have so many brilliant companies – at all levels of the supply chain – that are prospering despite the lack of a coherent Government strategy to support the sector.” “This isn't tubthumping; this is what we see every day when our sales engineers and installers commission precision high-speed Bruderer presses on shop floors across the country. Imagine what we could do if we had a long-term Industrial Strategy that focuses on our strengths and invests in them? And I don't mean the odd grant here and there. It needs to be substantial and flow down to SMEs – that is the critical bit. For industry to become more efficient, an area to improve is the education of manufacturing engineers about new, ‘smart' technology. Mark Weymouth, MD of PLUS Automation and UK representative for Contrinex and Satron, who runs a popular LinkedIn newsletter says “There's a pervading tendency for engineers to buy and commission what they know and not look at new, better plant and equipment that can raise productivity.” While PLUS Automation is in its fourth year of growth, many food and liquid process manufacturers are not explaining this technology to their site engineers. He says “The UK is about seven years behind mainland Europe in adopting many process technologies.” Although the increase in employers' national insurance payments may dampen this optimism, the indicators are that this new strategy for industry will help businesses, especially those in advanced manufacturing areas.

This last week, UK Tech Week was launched, and a host of events took place across the UK in celebration. We asked its Founder, Stuart Clarke MBE, to talk to us about the inspiration behind creating an umbrella platform to showcase tech communities across the UK. With events throughout the year in most regions from Glasgow to Basildon, Humberside to Bristol it was great to hear about how different tech weeks differentiate themselves based on local expertise. We talk about capital, partnerships, and why something like UK Tech Week can expand the reach of tech to a much broader audience through collaboration. Do head over to the UK Tech Week website and social channels to find out more. We also had some updates from Chris Bruce on Cambridge Tech Week too, including: • The Innovation Alley exhibition call has been announced - Innovation Alley takes place on Tuesday 10th September at the Corn Exchange and will showcase 50 innovative startups, 10 scaleups and a small number of corporates to showcase the exciting diversity of tech innovation. Nominations close by 30th May. • The call for contributors closes 13th May, so if you are interested in a speaking slot or being part of a panel or fireside chats they there is still time to apply (conditions are on the website). • The registrations for delegate tickets went live this week, with super early bird rates for the first 50 registrations. Will we see you at #CamTechWeek?Produced by Cambridge TV Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

I have an exciting and inspiring leadership interview for you as Episode 23 of Season 2! This week I had the privilege of interviewing Chief Constable Lee Freeman of Humberside Police. Yes, that Humberside Police, recently rated the best performing force in the country by HMICFRS! I think you'll enjoy his grounded communication style and 'intelligence-led leadership' approach, as I ask him about performance, leadership, culture and more under his stewardship in Humberside Police. There's a heap of lessons here for aspiring leaders everywhere, including Lee's universal tips on police promotion. He also shares his perspectives on leading with legitimacy, leading change, building trust, culture, communication/listening, supervision, how he turned the force around from worst- to best-performing in the country, and much more besides. You won't regret listening to this 45 minutes of incredible insights, and it's quality CPD if you're aspiring to a higher rank in policing. And I'm sure many cops out there will be envious of some of the apparent approaches taken by the leadership in Humberside! I'd like to thank Lee again for making the time to share his wisdom on police leadership with you. I'll post a blog in the usual place as a follow-up with my reflections and thoughts soon. Welcome to Episode 19 of Season 2, where delve into the subject of leading performance and how it can feel like the Spanish Inquisition! I was inspired to record this podcast, having attended a talk on police performance given by Humberside DCC Paul Anderson, at the Emergency Services Show yesterday, 21/09/22. It was entitled, 'A Victim-Focused Approach to Performance'. My reflections in this (longer!) episode include: the Humberside 'Compstat' style approach; the expectations of performance management at each rank (Sergeant, Inspector, Chief Inspector); what a one team approach looks like; the links to the CVF (We Deliver, Support and Inspire, and We Take Ownership); debrief on the presentation and Humberside's journey from bad to good performance; PEEL inspections; how brutal interrogation aids accountability; differences between strategic and tactical performance management; among other things like my own personal experience having worked in the top corridors of Devon and Cornwall Police. Whether you're aspiring to the next rank or seeking to solidify your competence as a leader, I hope you find this useful leadership CPD. In this week's Podcast, Leon and Paul host the show with guest Noel David Parkinson, ex-footballer, businessman and mentor. Noel can tell you one thing for sure: it's not easy to make it as a professional football player. Noel was born in Hull in 1959 and is a former English footballer who played in the Football League as a midfielder, beginning his career at Ipswich Town, but he had to retire from football earlier than he would have liked due to injury. However, he didn't let this stop him from achieving future success. After retiring from the game, he became a radio sports reporter in Humberside and a photocopier salesperson. Following this, he was employed in car sales and became a director of e-commerce. He was made redundant from his job in 2004, but he used his redundancy money to start wewillbuyyourcar.com, a nationwide vehicle-purchasing website, which now ???? turns over more than £20 million per year. So how did Noel go from a football player to a successful businessman? We sat down with him to find out as Noel shared his insights on staying "on top of your game" and "earning your right to play!" These days he supports other entrepreneurs with their business growth through mentoring and assisting with research and development. He sees himself as a project gamekeeper specialising in business operations and sales. Noel attributes much of his success to his positive attitude, determination and "hates to lose." You've got to want it more than anyone else; You've to be prepared to put the hours in and make the sacrifices. For him, football is like life. "Everything that goes on in football happens in day-to-day life." Earn your right to play During the podcast, Noel talks about the two inspiring quotes his football coach Sir Bobby Robson used to say, "don't forget; earn your right to play, which Noel explains; "you need to get on top of it, doing everything right yourself and on top of your opponent so that you can then go on to express yourself." "So if you think about that in any terms, that's where you want to be. You want to be on top of your own game, doing the things that you do well and right and getting on top of what might be your competition. That way, you'll reap the rewards," Noel feels he has done all along. The top two inches are everything His second favourite quote from Robson is that "the top two inches are everything", which refers to the top two inches of your head. Noel explains this means "you're tactically astute. You're mentally attuned. Your competitive spirit is there, and you want to win, and then you piece it clinically all together while you're playing, then you are flying!" The top 2 inches are the difference between success and failure-referring to mental strength and are vital to success, particularly in sports, as it often separates the good from the very best. Noel talks about the lessons he has learnt from failures, how he went through a divorce, learned to take stock and understands he had a part to play in that and that the losses can teach you a lot about yourself; he recognised he was working too much with too longer hours which added to the breakdown. "You learn as you get older, you are going to lose at times, things are not going to go right, you are going to get beat." Head over to Think Cloud for the Full Blog

Is Eating Meat Manly?

The Plant Based Riot

Join the Plant-Based Riot in welcoming very special guests from across the pond to discuss if eating meat promotes toxic masculinity. This week, the Riot talks with two plant-based blokes valiantly raising the vegan banner in England! We warmly welcome Kofi Smiles, host of the BBC's Humberside radio show, and Jordan Matfin, a founding member of The Vegan Man Club, to debate the ends and outs of diet and gender on a transatlantic scale! Episode 23- Is Eating Meat Manly? What is the definition of “manly?” What defines "a man? "Does the food we choose to eat, or perhaps not eat, have an implication on our masculinity? Well, in our current climate, it appears that ordering kale salad over cheesesteak sandwiches instantly knocks you down a few pegs on the masculinity scale. According to Google Dictionary, a manly man is one “having or denoting those good qualities traditionally associated with men, such as courage, strength, and spirit” or “befitting a man”. Sounds wonderful, doesn't it? It would seem that google dictionary recognizes a "man" as someone compassionate, epithetic and sympathetic. But in today's age of over branding, over marketing, and deceptive advertising, the simple act of eating has become a marketing tool used to appoint gender to a diet! And if you are a man that openly eats a plant-based diet, you can be assured that manhood will constantly be called into question. For far too long, vegans, especially vegan men, have been ridiculed for their dietary preferences, lifestyles, and choices to show compassion. If we look back to googles description of men, it would seem those vegan males, more so than their meat-eating counterparts, demonstrate "good qualities", "courage", "strength" and "spirit" simply by defying the American Man's traditional diet ladened with meat, cheese, bacon eggs, and dairy. It is obvious that eating mounds of meat have no bearing on anyone's masculinity. This notion is a campaign that has been constructed by advertisers, marketing agencies, and the meat industry in an effort to drive more units in the male demographic. If we are being 100% transparent, this industry-generated narrative should also include an amendment that informs "manly men" that they will also obtain obesity, cancer, and heart disease with such a "manly diet." The companies that promote these masculine directives are brainwashing men into believing that they are feminine for choosing more plants and less meat. This is a deceitful narrative supported by millions of dollars in the fictitious advertisement. However, these efforts appear to be failing as veganism is now growing faster than ever. Globally, veganism has skyrocketed and the same companies that were aggressively glorifying masculinity in meat-eating are now offering plant-based alternatives by the dozen simply because it is becoming more profitable! So I leave you with this: How can the same industries that exploited toxic masculinity through meat-eating for so many decades also simultaneously promote healthy plant-based eating simply because it is building momentum? What's really going on here?

Part 1 - GETTING CARTER. Author NICK TRIPLOW chats to Paul Burke about Ted Lewis and Brit Noir as No Exit Press reissue 2 Lewis novels Jack Carter's Law and Billy Rags, (Plender & GBH came out last year). In this first part Nick talks about his biography of Lewis, the author's background, influences and debut crime novel Jack's Return Home, filmed as Get Carter.GETTING CARTER: The story of Ted Lewis carries historical and cultural resonances for our own troubled times Get Carter are two words to bring a smile of fond recollection to all British film lovers of a certain age. The cinema classic was based on a book called Jack's Return Home, and many commentators agree contemporary British crime writing began with that novel. The influence of both book and film is strong to this day, reflected in the work of David Peace, Jake Arnott and a host of contemporary crime & noir authors. But what of the man who wrote this seminal work? Ted Lewis is one of the most important writers you've never heard of. Born in Manchester in 1940, he grew up in the tough environs of post-war Humberside, attending Hull College of Arts and Crafts before heading for London. His life described a cycle of obscurity to glamour and back to obscurity, followed by death at only 42. He sampled the bright temptations of sixties London while working in advertising, TV and films and he encountered excitement and danger in Soho drinking dens, rubbing shoulders with the 'East End boys' in gangland haunts. He wrote for Z Cars and had some nine books published. Alas, unable to repeat the commercial success of Get Carter, Lewis's life fell apart, his marriage ended and he returned to Humberside and an all too early demise. Getting Carter is a meticulously researched and riveting account of the career of a doomed genius. Long-time admirer Nick Triplow has fashioned a thorough, sympathetic and unsparing narrative. Required reading for noirists, this book will enthral and move anyone who finds irresistible the old cocktail of rags to riches to rags.Nick Triplow is the author of the south London crime novel Frank's Wild Years and the social history books The Women They Left Behind, Distant Water and Pattie Slappers. His acclaimed short story, Face Value, was a winner in the 2015 Northern Crime competition. Originally from London, now living in Barton upon Humber, Nick studied English and Creative Writing at Middlesex University and, in 2007, earned a distinction at Sheffield Hallam University's MA in Creative Writing. Since completing his biography of British noir pioneer, Ted Lewis, Nick has been working on new fiction.Produced by Junkyard DogMusic courtesy of Southgate & LeighCrime TimePaul Burke writes for Crime Time, Crime Fiction Lover, NB Magazine and the European Literature Network.

On 4th March 1998, Kirsty Carver a pretty young civilian working with Humberside police spent the evening visiting friends. later that evening Kirsty was brutally murdered and her body was not found for a month...... Circumstances meant the Police knew something sinister had happened and during the search for her body her former colleagues had many questions as to the circumstances of her disappearance was it the police officer boyfriend she had just broken up with? did she argue with her friend she had just visited? was this something to do with her work for the police? or was Kirsty just at the wrong place at the wrong time and wandered into the path of a killer? sometimes the truth is stranger than fiction https://anchor.fm/maliceaforethoughtuk/subscribe The Petrol Station Predator (wixsite.com) How Craig Belcher was caught - Hull Daily Mail Kirsty Carver's killer Craig Belcher has bid for freedom rejected - Hull Live (hulldailymail.co.uk) BBC report This podcast is created by Kel Visit our website for more information With Malice Aforethought UK |a UK crime forum podcast & blog (wixsite.com) Follow us on Twitter @aforethoughtuk @aforethoughtuk With Malice Aforethought UK #truecrimeblog #truecrimepodcast #truecrimestories #armchairdetective #legal #murder #pyschology #mystery Please listen to our other episodes and rate and subscribe wherever you listen to your podcasts and remember to always be nice to each other

Thank you.COVID-19: Latest lockdown measures leave pubs in tiersAs the UK began to experience an upturn in coronavirus case numbers, so policymakers in the devolved administrations started looking at tackling the sources of the dreaded second wave of COVID-19, and pubs have come under close scrutiny in all quarters.ScotlandScotland decided to close pubs across its central belt for a 16-day period, and limit the opening hours of other licensed premises, as part of a ‘circuit breaker’ lockdown (Scottish Government, 07 Oct).* Quoting her chief medical officer’s evidence, first minister Nicola Sturgeon drew a correlation between the ‘more than one fifth of people contacted by Test and Protect’ who reported visiting a hospitality setting, and the increase in the R rate above 1 ‘approximately three weeks after the hospitality sector opened up’:* subsequently extended to 02 November (STV News, 21 Oct)WalesIn Wales, where a 10PM curfew on selling alcohol for licensed premises was introduced last month, first minister Mark Drakeford proceeded to issue a ‘firebreak’ lockdown of his own – turning pubs into takeaway taverns only between 23 October and 09 November (Welsh Government, 19 Oct).EnglandThe same curfew applies to England. However, lawmakers decided to adopt the novel approach of localising management of the lockdown with a tier system, which has resulted in curious outcomes such as a legal definition of what a ‘substantial’ meal is, for the purpose of allowing some licensed premises to continue to operate under the most severe tier restrictions (The Mirror, 12 Oct). For some venue owners, the new rules also mean that in addition to pressure from law enforcement to check IDs for names and addresses in a bid to stop households mixing (EuroWeekly, 21 Oct), those situated in ‘high’ and ‘very high’ tier areas are either subject to the inevitability of fewer customers paying a visit, or temporary closure for wet-led pubs. One Financial Times article predicts the end of chains whose main custom is serving alcohol (13 Oct):On the face of it, the most affected of the UK’s listed national inn groups are Marston’s, JD Wetherspoon and M&B. It looks like last orders.Large proportions of Marston’s and JD Wetherspoon’s hostelries are wet-led. Food as a percentage of JDW’s total sales rank among the lowest in the sector. More than two-thirds of Marston’s pubs are old-fashioned boozers. All three groups are loaded with debt, which even last year was many times ebitda. Earnings of all three are expected to at least halve this year. Marston’s stood at about £1·4bn at the last count or £1·2bn including the cash coming in from the brewing joint venture with Carlsberg opportunely signed this summer. That could be more than 10 times this year’s ebitda. Pub earnings of many groups will barely cover interest bills this year. The resulting uncertainty has only served to anger licensees and those sympathetic to the plight of the industry. Some have pulled stunts, such as a retaliatory ban (Telegraph, 30 Sep); others have sought further evidence for the 10PM curfew’s effectiveness and whether it represents a threat to the health of people thrown out of pubs and restaurants at the same time (London Evening Standard, 06 Oct); but The Night Time Industries Association has launched legal action to try to prevent the new lockdown measures entirely (Daily Mail, 12 Oct).Whatever the outcome, the reality of the current measures will most likely be a further loss of jobs in the hospitality sector, like Greene King (Sky News, 07 Oct), and a permanent shutdown of licensed premises – as many as one in five, according to real estate adviser Altus Group (Morning Advertiser, 08 Oct).Northern IrelandHaving already set a curfew time for licensed premises of 11PM as opposed to 10PM in other areas of the UK, the Stormont executive decided to do lockdown a little differently from the other Home Nations too. Their first minister, Arlene Foster, announced a four-week shutdown of the hospitality sector apart from deliveries and takeaways for food only during trading hours. Uniquely, Northern Ireland is the only nation to address the availability of alcohol in the off-trade too: off-licences and supermarkets will not be permitted to sell alcohol after 8pm (Northern Ireland Executive Office, 14 Oct) during the period.Too much focus on pubs?In the row between government and the hospitality sector over the COVID-19 restrictions, the deputy chief medical officer for England was reported to have said that he ‘could not guarantee’ the 10PM curfew would ‘bring the virus under control’ (The Telegraph, 18 Oct, £wall), instead preferring a mandatory closing time of 6PM.But while much has been made of the impact of the latest round of restrictions on licensed premises, supermarkets have benefited from the increase in alcohol purchases in the four weeks to 04 October: Kantar data reported Britons spent an extra £261m on alcohol in grocery stores (Guardian, 13 Oct).Data from Public Health England Wider Impacts of COVID-19 on Health (WICH) monitoring tool indicates the influence of pandemic-induced home drinking on the intake of increasing and higher risk drinkers.COVID-19 briefing warns of rising health risks to heavy drinkers🎵 Podcast feature 🎵The second Institute of Alcohol Studies briefing on alcohol consumption during the COVID-19 pandemic (08 Oct) warns of the hidden harm from the rise in increasing and higher risk drinking and highlights the need for the UK Government to find public health solutions to the issue.Speaking on the podcast, Dr Sadie Boniface, IAS head of research, who authored the briefing, hinted at the impact that increased consumption among the heaviest drinkers may have on treatment providers for substance problems:In terms of treatment for substance use problems including alcohol, there’s been a bit of a fall compared with the same time period last year, but I have read some other statistics as well that say it’s starting to pick up now, so what’s really concerning is that problems to do with increased drinking during the pandemic might be being stored up for the future.Alcohol ban on Scottish trains under considerationAccording to The Scotsman, national train operator ScotRail have informed the Rail Maritime and Transport (RMT) Union of the possibility of bringing in ‘a full all-hours drinking ban on trains in a bid to tighten up on COVID-19 safety measures’ (17 Oct).It comes after the nation’s first minister Nicola Sturgeon said more stringent travel rules ‘need to be considered’.However, the move is rumoured to have been put on hold after the British Transport Police (BTP) called for more time to consider the resource implications, and the RMT have expressed some concerns about enforcement of the new rules.Mick Hogg, regional organiser for the RMT in Scotland, said: ‘We have been told by ScotRail that there will be a full ban on alcohol on trains as a COVID-19 measure. We welcome that.‘But it has to be resourced or it puts more pressure on our staff. It’s a double whammy for them. They can’t enforce the wearing of masks or police passengers drinking alcohol. That has been a big issue for a while. We know the BTP don't have enough staff as it is.’ScotRail’s current alcohol byelaws state that passengers can't drink alcohol on their trains between 21:00 and 10:00hrs, and they may not allow you to board if you are extremely drunk. But this has not stopped it happening. One conductor told the newspaper: ‘Busy weekend nights haven't calmed down in recent weeks. People from Edinburgh and Glasgow have been piling on trains across to Fife to go to the pub. I've seen packed trains with the vast majority of passengers drunk’.Government in call for evidence for review of alcohol dutyPublic health and trade organisations are lining up to submit evidence to the Alcohol duty review, as per the government’s Budget announcement earlier this year (Gov.uk, 01 Oct). The review has been widely welcomed by stakeholders, as the UK gains the power to reform alcohol taxation following their departure from the European Union. HM Treasury’s call for evidence will also ask whether:the method of alcohol taxation should be standardisedthe duty categories should be changed or unifiedproducts should be consistently distinguished by their strengthdistinctions should be made based on the place of retailsmall producer reliefs should be extended or standardisedduties could be uprated for inflation in a more consistent mannera single process for approvals, declarations and payments should be introducedmore could be done to tackle avoidance and evasion of dutyThe deadline for responses is 29 November.NoLo beers have small impact on alcohol purchasesResearch published in BMJ Open has found that there were significant but small reductions to alcohol sales following the introduction of new no and low alcohol beers during 2017–2018 and reformulation of existing beers to contain less alcohol during 2018 (12 Oct).Using purchase data from Kantar Worldpanel’s household shopping panel for 2015–2018, researchers looked at the purchasing habits of 64, 286 British households following a period which saw 46 new low and no alcohol beer beverages and 33 beer beverages reformulated to contain less alcohol. A step-jump in volume bought was noticed for both beverage types at the beginning of March 2017 and during mid-March 2018 respectively. Interrupted time series analyses found a combined associated impact of both events with relative reductions of alcohol by volume of beer between 1·2% and 2·3%; purchases of grams of alcohol within beer between 7·1% and 10·2%; and purchases of grams of alcohol as a whole between 2·6% and 3·9%. The reductions were greater for reformulation than for the introduction of new low and no alcohol products. Reductions were independently higher for younger age groups of shoppers and for households that bought the most alcohol. The research team conclude that the fact that the volume of purchases for both new low and no alcohol beer products (2·6% of total beer volume purchased during 2018) and of new reformulated beer products (6·9%) was very small ‘indicates that there are future opportunities to increase the volume of such products so as to reduce the harm done by alcohol’.In other newsA 30-year review of global disease burdens published in The Lancet finds alcohol use was the leading risk factor for those aged 25–49 years (17 Oct). Overall, alcohol use was one of the fastest growing burdens, at more than 0·5% per year. When split by sex, ‘there were large differences between attributable deaths in males and females due to alcohol use, which accounted for 2·07 million (1·79–2·37) deaths in males and 0·374 million (0·298–0·461) deaths in females in 2019’. The national picture estimated alcohol to be the cause of approximately 4% of deaths and 5% of Disability Adjusted Life Years in 2019 (illustrated).A team of researchers will establish the effectiveness and cost‐effectiveness of the Drink Less app at reducing alcohol consumption among hazardous and harmful adult drinkers, in what will be the first randomised controlled trial of an alcohol reduction app for the general population in the UK (17 Oct). The result of the study will inform the decision on whether it is worth investing resources in large‐scale implementation.Alcohol screening and supportive interventions from primary care practitioners can help older people make healthier decisions about their alcohol use, according to a qualitative study published in the British Journal of General Practice (19 Oct). A total of 24 older adults aged ≥65 years and 35 primary care practitioners in northern England participated in interviews and focus groups. Researchers found that they were motivated to make changes to their alcohol use when they experienced symptoms, and if they felt that limiting consumption would enable them to maintain their quality of life.Minimum unit pricing – the latest from Scotland and IrelandScotland: is a legal challenge possible? The Scottish Parliament voted 90 to 28 to refuse legislative consent to the UK Internal Market Bill (BBC News Scotland, 07 Oct), fearing that the legislation could cause a constitutional rift that would open bold public health measures such as minimum unit pricing for alcohol (MUP) to another legal challenge. The Westminster government is not bound by the vote in Holyrood, but the Scottish constitution secretary notes that it formalises the nation’s ‘explicit’ and comprehensive rejection of the bill. Last month, Michael Russell said in a statement (Scottish Government, 08 Sep) that the bill would ‘open the door to a race to the bottom on food standards, environmental standards and will endanger key public health policies such as minimum unit pricing.’The Secretary of State for Scotland Alister Jack issued a rebuttal denying the ‘false claims’ made by First Minister of Scotland Nicola Sturgeon about the bill, assuring in point four of his statement that MUP would still have been introduced:But devolution expert Jess Sargeant states that the internal market bill could be interpreted in a way that ‘inevitably will place greater limits on devolved competence than present arrangements’, which could also ‘impede key benefits of devolution “as a policy lab”, allowing new policies to be tried in one jurisdiction before being adopted elsewhere’. (Institute for Government, 14 Sep)This opinion was supported by an advisor to Holyrood's Constitution committee, who told The Scotsman that ‘issues may arise if minimum pricing is considered in the context of “indirect discrimination”’, and this may give rise to a court challenge (12 Oct).He explains in a paper: ‘A Scottish rule that applies Minimum Unit Pricing to all alcohol whether domestic or imported could be indirectly discriminatory if it impacts more on imported alcohol than it does comparable Scottish-produced alcohol’. Rules will be assessed on three conditions, including on the grounds of whether it ‘cannot reasonably be considered to be a necessary means of achieving a legitimate aim’.Although the ‘protection of public health’ is recognised in the bill as a legitimate aim, the advisor warns there could be questions raised around whether MUP will be ‘reasonably’ considered to be ‘necessary’ to achieve this aim, and so a challenge based on the new conditions may be brought.Irish MUP still on ice two years on from the Public Health (Alcohol) ActThe Irish Times reports that on the second anniversary of the Public Health (Alcohol) Act, MUP is still to be implemented (12 Oct). Alcohol Action Ireland’s head of advocacy Eunan McKinney went further, saying that there is ‘no starting date for the “difficult stuff”… including labelling on all alcohol products of the links to cancer, the 9PM broadcasting watershed for alcohol advertising, and restriction on the content of advertising to make it “utilitarian” with “no hero, no glamour”’.The news comes as the Budget 2021 statement made no direct reference to alcohol, meaning duties were left unchanged (Government of Ireland, 13 Oct). While Alcohol Action Ireland (13 Oct) welcomed ministers for not acquiescing to ‘the extensive lobbying of the alcohol industry, who had sought a 15% reduction’, they regretted the missed opportunity ‘to introduce a Cost-of-Living index to excise rates’, amongst other plans outlined in their Pre-Budget submission.Responding to the Budget, Alcohol Action Ireland chief executive Dr Sheila Gilheany (listen to the podcast for her full statement) said that ‘everyday that delays these measures being introduced can be counted in lives unnecessarily lost and endless public expenditure that could be saved, if implemented they will undoubtedly achieve better public health outcomes. Left dormant on the statute books, they are useless. ‘What’s required now, two years on, is a firm timeline from Taoiseach and his government that commits to the implementation in full of the suite of measures whose effectiveness relies on coherent and cohesive actions.’Sobriety tag scheme reaches WalesOffenders convicted of alcohol-related crimes in Wales can now be banned from drinking and ordered to wear a sobriety tag by judges (Gov.uk, 21 Oct). The ankle tags will monitor offenders’ sweat every 30 minutes and alert probation staff if alcohol is consumed. Those found in breach of their drinking bans can face fines or be sentenced in court. The tags can be given out when courts impose an alcohol abstinence order, a new power which serves a drinking ban on an offender for up to 120 days. The Ministry of Justice says treatment referrals for alcohol use will continue to be made for those with more serious alcohol addictions who commit crimes. The Welsh scheme follows two pilots in London and across Humberside, Lincolnshire and North Yorkshire, both of which showed that offenders were sober on 97.4% of the days monitored, although their apparent success is qualified by the fact they involved fewer than 500 people, and only six participants agreed to be interviewed about the tags in the Humberside, Lincolnshire and North Yorkshire pilot (NatCen, Oct 2019).Secretary of State for Wales Simon Hart said: ‘Alcohol can have a devastating impact on lives and figures show it is a key factor behind far too many crimes.‘I am encouraged to see Wales at the forefront of implementing this new technology, which we believe will contribute towards lowering reoffending rates, making our streets safer and supporting those who need help.’Heineken fined £2m for breaching Pubs Code The pubs code adjudicator (PCA) has found Heineken guilty of forcing tenants of its public houses to sell ‘unreasonable’ amounts of their own beers and ciders (Gov.uk, 15 Oct).Following a three-year investigation ending in July 2019, Fiona Dickie concluded that Heineken – via its pubs business, Star – had ‘seriously and repeatedly’ breached laws that protect publicans from company behaviour aimed at prohibiting pubs selling competitor brands. This was despite repeated regulatory interventions and clear arbitration rulings from the adjudicator.Dickie said: ‘The report of my investigation is a game-changer. It demonstrates that the regulator can and will act robustly to protect the rights that parliament has given to tied tenants.’The PCA’s assessment of industry malpractice found Heineken had committed a total of 12 breaches with the result that it had frustrated the principles of the Pubs Code. As well as identifying how the company had offered stocking terms that had acted as a deterrent to pub tenants pursuing a free-of-tie tenancy, the PCA highlighted systemic corporate failures by Star in its approach to compliance. The news comes weeks before the conclusion of a government review into the Code itself. The tie element of the Code has long been criticised by pub owners and campaigners, who say it is being routinely abused by deep-pocketed pubcos able to flout the spirit of the code that governs it (Guardian, 15 Oct). The PCA also discovered that the company rewrote the job description of Code Compliance Officer ‘to ensure the Code is interpreted to the commercial benefit of Heineken UK’. This breached the Code requirement to appoint a compliance officer whose role is to verify compliance.Dickie decided upon ‘the imposition of a sanction’ to ‘change the company’s mindset’ towards compliance and ‘serve as a deterrent to future non-compliant conduct by Star and other pub-owning businesses’.As well as imposing the fine – which can account for up to 1% of the relevant pub-owning group’s annual UK turnover – the PCA has also ordered Star to make all its free-of-tie tenancies Pubs Code compliant and to ensure future Code compliance. In response, Star pubs managing director, Lawson Mountstevens, said in a statement: ‘We are deeply disappointed and frustrated at the outcome of this investigation.‘There are many aspects of the report that we fundamentally disagree with and we are actively considering an appeal.‘This penalty is unwarranted and disproportionate, and comes at a time when the entire sector is in serious financial crisis as we work around the clock to support our pubs and licensees to keep their businesses afloat.’Dickie has given Heineken six weeks to provide a detailed response to how it will implement her recommendations, and has ordered them to write to all its tenants explaining her findings, the measures Star is taking to respond to them and how these will affect tenants in practical terms.‘I will be holding discussions with all the companies I regulate following my findings about how they will ensure they are code-compliant,’ Dickie said. ‘My message is that if anyone previously had any doubts about my resolution to act when I find breaches, they can have no doubt now.’The UK Alcohol Alert (incorporating Alliance News) is designed and produced by The Institute of Alcohol Studies. WCW had plenty of pros to supplement the many, many cons, but PPV events from the company that are widely regarded as truly great are few and far between. Superbrawl III is one of those select few that many consider to be great. So great, in fact, that friend of the podcast and BBC Sport broadcast journalist in the Humberside region Mike White insisted that we rewatch it for his special guest appearance. Join Dean, Liam and Mike as they fondly recall the White Castle of Fear strap match between Big Van Vader and Sting, the falls-count-anywhere melee between Cactus Jack and Paul Orndorff and an overall product now free of the dated Bill Watts stench.

Born off Beverley Road and raised on Hull’s Orchard Park estate. It had a fantastic sense of community and belonging. Considered himself lucky, His Dad a builder’s labourer, stay-at-home Mum of 4 children, of whom he was the eldest. Making the big decision at 16 and leaving the family home to live with a friend's family. At 17, getting a bedsit of his own and ironically, a job as a labourer following in his father’s footsteps. Orchard Park was also the home to the biggest and best baseball diamond in the UK. The local club was called ‘The Danes’ and were regular Hull champions, Humberside champions and even UK champions. Baseball played a big part in Tony's life. Often in trouble, if it was not for baseball, he may have taken a completely different path! He decided that joining the British Army was far more exciting and rewarding than anything around here could offer. His mates didn’t think he would last two minutes; “they knew I would struggle taking orders and loved to rebel,” Tony says. Picked on and pushed to his limits, almost giving up a couple of times. Tony was posted in 1984, to West Berlin. Some of his duties included guarding on the Berlin Wall itself and protecting the trains travelling across the then East/West German corridor. “Visiting Checkpoint Charlie and going through into East Berlin was certainly an eye-opener!” As part of his duties, he was assigned to join the guard of Spandau prison, guarding the notorious Rudolf Hess, Deputy Fuhrer to Adolf Hitler. He came face to face with Rudolf Hess on one occasion and even as an older man, he still portrayed a powerful and menacing presence. His personal mantra is to work, share, support one another and collaborate. The ‘Business Culture Hull’ with its 121s, group meetings, presentations and introductions brings people together to help and be helped along their business journey. The final destination is helping to realise all that Hull can be. "We don’t have to look over our shoulders at other cities, we are Hull, and we have everything we need right here." Hello People welcome to episode 29 of the When In Yorkshire Podcast. This is another double feature and the penultimate episode recorded at Leeds Festival in 2019 featuring conversations with Hull Based singer CHARLOTTE and my first return guest, the voice and eyes of BBC Introducing Yorkshire and Humberside, Alan Raw. Both of these conversations show what a great resource and platform the BBC Introducing shows are as CHARLOTTE was chosen by Alan and the BBC Introducing team to play Reading and Leeds festivals as were dozens of other bands this year and this is just one of the festivals that are supported by and support the show. In her own words, CHARLOTTE produces soul music with her own modern, accessible twist. Her voice is great both recorded and live and she has a great presence and fantastic charisma on stage. We chatted about her musical upbringing, and how she has been performing from a young age in arenas as well as more recent high profile shows with the likes of Lewis Capaldi. If you’re looking for something new and exciting then do check her out.   https://www.facebook.com/iamcharl0tte/   www.youtube.com/watch?v=1oTxWFZrHSM The second part with Alan Raw covers the many roles he has within the BBC Introducing team from discovering and choosing artists to appear at the festival, broadcasting live, introducing the acts on stage and taking the photographs of not only the introducing stage but the whole festival. He was a busy man and it was lovely to catch a few minutes with him again.  https://www.facebook.com/BBCintroducing/ https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p010j8y5

The guys start this week with a tip of the cap to Diddly's wedding but don't worry, they save a full run down until the main man is back from his Honeymoon is Sardinia. Talk moves onto winning the lottery and how each of The Bugles would spend and/or share it. Jiggs reveals he has a doppelgänger - at least according to this phone - before he talks about a trip to Humberside with his work colleagues. There's more strange happenings on the UK roads as two more weird and wonderful sites are seen by some of the guys.  Angelo reveals that his package is exposed for all to see (we'll say no more) and they each share some incidents that have involved delivery drivers going rogue with their parcels. The Bugles each reveal the TV programs they can't stand watching and they then talk about a truly cringe worthy porno scene that was shared in their What's App group recently. Dear god is horrifically funny! Finally, the latest round of The Bugles League is back.....who will be the movers and shakers in this weeks episode? Welcome to the Join UP Dots podcast which today is question and answer time. But i wanted to start with an email that I received from a lovely lady in Texas America. I hope she doesn't mind me sharing this (but hey, its too late now) but there was so much passion and enthusiasm to make her life what she dreams it could be (and will be) I particularly want to reference the desire to have time with her family as a leading driver to her workload. Hi David,  Hi! I've been meaning to email you for the longest time, and finally. I came across your podcast about 2 to 3 years ago, I commute from my home to my business at the time in San Antonio, Texas, about an hour drive, so you would always be on. At first not going to lie...the accent annoyed me,-(kids love Peppa pig, so they love you too)  however after a few podcasts, I just couldn't listen to anything else!) Even my now 11 and 5 year old would look forward to listening to your message, I'd glance at the rear view mirror and see my son laugh at one of your off jokes and my daughter singing the intro.   By the way he now takes and promotes cold showers! Lol Point is, you changed my life. You made a difference in whatever I was going through at that time.  I'm from Hispanic descent, and our culture is very negative. Always second guessing myself and being the “yes” lady, that just couldn't say “no”. I've always had an entrepreneurial spirit, I had my first store at 26, then a real estate agent, event hall, then art gallery and lastly a small art shop in the heart of downtown San Antonio/riverwalk. However, I've always struggled with them not being successful enough or me being there ALL the time and missing out on important events with my family. So on May 31st I closed my brick and mortar and started to push my online shop. I'd love to be a part of the movement (joinupdots) that changed, uplifted, and inspired me. I want to say that you are an inspiration and a blessing. Keep up the fire! Blessings and hugs. Now let's move onto the nuts and bolt of the episode with three quick questions posed by the listeners either through email or the Facebook page. Dear David and everyone who works at Join Up Dots, I am a recent convert to your show, and i'm ploughing through several episodes a day on my daily commute. One of the things that comes out of the show is you cant do this on your own. I would love to find a mentor that could help me but I dont have the money to spare. The truth is, i dont think i will ever have the money to attract the ones that could really make a difference.  Any ideas?   Melanie Bristoe, Humberside, UK Of course you have to listen to the episode to get the answer for this question. Now for the second question from a listener who is struggling for steady clients coming into her business. David you are the sexiest man I have ever heard on the wireless. I started my new business a couple of years ago in the arena of sports therapy. I find that I am spending so much money on marketing, and find that the clients come to me in dribs and drabs. Any idea how I can get more consistent results? Really appreciate you and your passion for inspiring the world. Now for the last question........... David, there are so many different podcasts out there today, I am inspired to start my own. Do you have any tips on choosing a subject that will work? All the best Chris Martin Thank you for listening and for anyone who wants assitance to create their own business then simply drop us a line

Episode Notes Humberside City, nestled in the north of Britain, is on fire, and it has taken a few weeks for anyone to really notice. The fire brigade have been doing their best, as have the other emergency services, but whoever is behind the fires has been systematically running them ragged. Whitehall is worried. Something doesn’t add up, so they’ve dispatched a warlock – a former illegal mage, pressed into service of the government to deal with matters of the arcane – to look things over.Jameson Parker is that warlock, and he’s pretty okay with that. His freedoms might be heavily restricted, and any unauthorized use of magic means he’ll be struck down dead instantly, but it could be worse. He gets more or less free rein to swan around Humberside like the big I am, and it gives him a way to atone for his less than stellar past. He’s better off without magic, and he knows it.But is magic better off without him? The warlocks of Humberside don’t seem to think so, and there are rumblings that, as well as the fires, something big is about to go down. Jameson is not best pleased. Contact info for Steve K. Ever celebrated something too early? We have. What we did manage to get right was going to a parkrun. Nicola went to Rother Valley parkrun to complete her Yorkshire and Humberside set whilst Danny went to the inaugural Osterley parkrun to stay atop the London list. They also bring you news of fake accounts, finalise the '99' argument and present real Chairman Joe audio.

One annual feature at Bramham is the event’s backing of a charity and this year’s partner is The Fire Fighters Charity, the UK’s leading provider of services to support the fire and rescue community when they are in need. Charity representatives together with the Fire and Rescue Services from Yorkshire and Humberside region will be on-event raising awareness of their work with horses and fundraising towards the £9million target required annually. The Fire Fighters Charity is there for every one of the 66,000 serving fire fighters plus control room staff, fire service support staff, retired fire fighters, and their families. Fire fighter’s jobs are inherently dangerous. Every 30 seconds in the UK, fire fighters are called to an incident, putting their lives on the line and often sustaining physical injury in the line of duty and many more go through emotional trauma after rescuing people in desperate situations. The Charity has three state-of-the-art residential rehabilitation centres. Run by dedicated teams of professionals, these centres offer a range of treatments to help people recover from or learn to live with their injury, trauma or illness, often helping fire fighters return to work after career-threatening injuries. As well as Bramham’s own milestone birthday, The Fire Fighters Charity celebrates its 70th anniversary in 2013 so there’s much to celebrate on top of the three major competition titles up for grabs in the Equi-Trek CCI***, the BETA CIC*** and the Bishop Burton College Under 25 CCI***. As well as the eventing competitions, the event hosts top-flight show jumping, showing classes, young horse sections and Pony Club show jumping and mounted games. Plus, family entertainments, main ring shows, amazing food outlets and over 130 prime trade stands all combine to make Bramham an award winner, the 2012 BETA Event of the Year to be precise! So, make this your not-to-be-missed fixture of 2013, you won’t be disappointed! The tradestand area will be boosted this year by our charity as the local specialist large animal rescue units will be showing how they support the equine community. They will be demonstrating techniques on how they rescue horses from various scenarios, talking visitors through these rescues step by step and offering vehicle safety advice. Regional Fundraiser for the Fire Fighters Charity, Chrissie Fielden, has experienced first-hand the professional care provided by the Fire Fighters Charity.” Whilst working for a Fire and Rescue Service in 2011, I had a very unspectacular fall off my young horse Bob. Having been airlifted to hospital I was told I had broken my neck. I received specialist residential rehabilitation at the Fire Fighters Charity centre in Penrith which not only put me back on my feet, but helped me come to terms with the life changing effects of my accident. I will be forever grateful for the professional and individual care I received at Jubilee House.” Chrissie continued; “This is a fantastic opportunity to raise awareness of the Fire Fighters Charity and to help us raise money so we can continue to make a real difference to the lives of people within the fire community.” Check out www.firefighterscharity.org.uk for more information on the vital work of Bramham’s 2013 Charity.

Joining me in the studio in January were two of the Ian McMillan Orchestra. Ian McMillan is well known as poet in residence for Barnsley FC and beat poet for Humberside police and a Radio 3 broadcaster. Luke Carver Goss plays accordian amongst other instruments, writes commissioned peices and plays in a number of bands including the much praised Tea Hodzic Trio. The idea was to talk about their tour and new album Sharp Stories but somehow it didn't quite work out like that. I blame the coffee! The duo are masters of improvisation and it turned out to be a session full of mischief including the special improvisation for GondwanaSound. Enjoy. Copyright GondwanaSound all rights reserved. GondwanaSound is a two hour magazine style broadcast of global roots and grooves, every Wednesday 10-midday on Sheffield Live! 93.2FM. Further details on http://www.gondwanasound.co.uk
