Send us a Text Message. My son Grady and I got to spend the better part of a week with Gabe & Reata Clark and their crew at the historic OW Ranch in south eastern Montana. Gabe grew up in western Wyoming where he learned what hard work and determination are all about. That approach to life has payed off well for Gabe and about anything he has put his mind to. Gabe is very well know in the cowboy circle as a top hand, however what stands out to me about Gabe is how good of a father he is. Gabe and his wife Reata manage the OW ranch where they raise a pile of kids and also raise some of the nicest horses around. Lynn R. Miller is a painter, farmer, horseman, and writer. Odd jobs ranging from commercial fisherman, logger, sawyer, farmer, workhorse teamster, lecturer, and cattle rancher, supported him through college. Over the past 40 years, Lynn has become a world-renowned authority in the fields of alternative farming and animal powered agriculture. In 1976 with the encouragement of his father's suggestion to “grow a crop of literature”, to assist the fledging small farmer, he founded the Small Farmer's Journal, an international agrarian quarterly which functions to this day as cornerstone empowering a worldwide readership. For SFJ's entire 48 year history Lynn has manually stewarded this living alternative preservationist publication, now in it's 188th edition. We learn of Lynn's early enchantment with painting, and self-described “genetic memory”, leading him to follow a manual transmission life integrating his passions rooted in “shared work”, and restorative land cultivation. Mr. Miller is author to over twenty books (poetry, fiction, and nonfiction), including the best-selling, Workhorse Handbook, now in its second edition, and his current release Roots in a Lovely Filth, He has been featured in the Wall Street Journal, New York Times, Ranch and Reata, and Western Horseman. Zach Wichter joins us to discuss the massive, yet not-so-commonly known incidents of damage to mobility devices caused by airlines. Zach is a consumer travel reporter for USA Today and focuses much of his writing on air travel specifically. Zach discusses his project where he has been tracking incidents of airlines damaging mobility devices throughout 2023, working to put names and faces, through storytelling, to the 10,000-15,000 devices that airlines damage each year. He highlights the significant impact of such damage on disabled travelers and their families, emphasizing the human aspect behind the statistics. We discuss potential solutions, efforts of improvement being made, and of course, the ongoing need for advocating in order to keep the ball rolling towards improvement. Zach's dedication to sharing these stories and raising awareness for this issue is evident throughout the episode and he encourages listeners to share their stories and contribute to the ongoing dialogue about accessibility in air travel. Episode 232 welcomes Matt LaFleur who shares his journey as a rare disease patient with Friedreich's ataxia (FA). Matt talks about how he transitioned from viewing himself as a victim of FA to seeing himself as a hero in his own story. He describes the impact of the diagnosis as an "inciting event" and highlights how the hero's journey is not just a linear path but a cyclical one. Matt emphasizes the importance of taking responsibility and finding little victories along the way, despite the ongoing presence of FA. The discussion touches on various aspects of life with a rare disease, relationships, and personal growth. Matt also shares his experience of presenting at the FA Symposium and how he and his co-presenters used mythical characters to relate their topics to the hero's journey concept. The episode offers a unique perspective on finding inspiration and resilience in the face of adversity. Good morning from Pharma and Biotech daily: the podcast that gives you only what's important to hear in Pharma e Biotech world. Bayer has recently opened a new plant in California to produce cell therapies, specifically a Parkinson's disease treatment being tested by its subsidiary Bluerock. This is a significant step forward in the field of cell therapy development.Meanwhile, Sana, another cell therapy developer, is implementing cost-saving measures, including layoffs and delaying certain research projects. These actions are aimed at ensuring the company's financial stability. In the world of biotech, Crispr gene editing technology is gaining increasing importance. Many companies in this field are led by former students of the pioneering scientists in the Crispr field. This shows the significant impact and potential of this technology. After a slow summer, there has been an uptick in biotech M&A activity. One notable acquisition is that of Orchard Therapeutics. This indicates the growing interest and investment in the biotech industry. In regulatory news, Pepgen has received clearance from the FDA to begin a study of its muscular dystrophy drug. This is an important milestone for the company, and we can expect to see the first results of this study next year.On the other hand, Alnylam has faced a setback as the FDA denied expanded approval for its RNA drug for a rare heart condition. This decision has set back the company's plans, highlighting the challenges faced by pharmaceutical companies in gaining regulatory approval for their products.Moving on to other news, Alvotech, a biopharmaceutical company, has received another rejection from the FDA for its biosimilar of Stelara. The FDA cited "deficiencies" at Alvotech's manufacturing plant as the reason for the rejection. This marks the fourth FDA rejection for Alvotech since last year.In a recent acquisition, Biogen has announced layoffs at Reata Pharmaceuticals, which it acquired for $7 billion. These layoffs will impact approximately one-third of Reata's workforce. In regulatory news, the European Commission has ordered Illumina to divest its subsidiary Grail. This decision comes after years of regulatory challenges and investigations. In clinical trial updates, Eli Lilly's mirikizumab has shown promising results in a Phase III trial for Crohn's disease. Over 54% of patients treated with mirikizumab achieved clinical remission at 52 weeks. Eli Lilly plans to submit a marketing application for mirikizumab in Crohn's disease to the FDA in 2024.Overall, these developments highlight the challenges faced by pharmaceutical companies in gaining regulatory approval for their products and the impact of acquisitions on workforce restructuring. The recent rejection by the FDA of a label expansion for Alnylam Pharmaceuticals' drug Onpattro to treat a rare heart condition has caused disappointment for the company. However, CEO Yvonne Greenstreet has outlined the company's future plans. This rejection sheds light on the challenges faced by drugmakers in gaining approval for their treatments. There is a delicate balance between patients and drugmakers wanting more liberal approval processes, while the medical community aims to ensure that drugs provide significant benefits compared to the risks. The FDA has been working towards bridging this gap through programs like Accelerating Rare Disease Cures (ARC). ARC aims to provide education campaigns and resources for developers to ensure all stakeholders are aligned.Alnylam's rejection serves as a reminder that surprises can still arise in the drug development and regulatory arenas. It also highlights the need for continuous innovation and adaptation in this field.Looking ahead, gene editing technology, particularly CRISPR-based therapies, holds great promise and could soon receive US approval. Many startups and scientists are actively working on advancements in this gene editing revolution. In summary, Alnylam's disap
