An odd notion I had while planning for this year's National Poetry Month: could I perform an Amy Lowell poem with a rock band in the spirit of the Patti Smith Group? Well, the result still sounds like me, but sections of this Amy Lowell poem do presage methods of later poetic expression. The Parlando Project performs various words (mostly literary poetry) with original music in different styles. We've done over 800 of these combinations, and you can hear all of them and read about our encounter with the words at our blog and archives located at frankhudson.org
It's another historical outing for the show, with the first political figure to ever host the show: Ron Nessen, Press Secretary for Gerald Ford! What better way for Ford to gain some momentum in the upcoming election against Jimmy Carter then make it seem like he's in on all the fun going on down at SNL? Just have Ron host the show, Ford can make a few pre-taped appearances, everything will be fine! Except it wasn't. Arriving late in the week, Ron didn't quite realize that the show had quietly written it's raunchiest outing to date, but with no time to do anything about it, well...the show must go on. In the end, Ron and Ford were made to look quite the fools indeed. But what about the show? Well, it lands an early classic (Super Bass-O-Matic), exposes America to some early punk with Patti Smith and keeps it's counter-culture image intact by making a fool of the president. Not bad for a show that was still trying to figure out just what the hell it was.

The story goes that it only took a single day to record this album. Well, Discograffiti ironically took this opportunity to double down on our efforts to discuss it. Featuring two incredible special guests—The Patti Smith Group's Lenny Kaye and Smithereens drummer Dennis Diken—topped off by Righteous Brother Bill Medley, who drops in for a quick visit. If you asked me (which you didn't), this is one of the greatest episodes in Discograffiti history. Here's just a few of the many things Lenny & Dennis discuss with Discograffiti in this podcast: The incomparably insane recording and release schedule under which The Beach Boys were working in the Fall of 1963; The yearning reach and sense of possibility inherent in the early 1960s, and how that wound up embedded in the grooves of the Little Deuce Coupe LP; What Mike Love once told Dennis “Ballad Of Ol' Betsy” may have been about; Lenny's favorite Beach Boys LP; The absolute necessity of doo-wop music and car culture at that time; And the live, in-the-moment discovery that Lenny and Dave are actually fraternity brothers.Listen: linktr.ee/discograffitiI support a wife and a six-year-old son with Discograffiti as my sole source of income. Synopsis - Dany Schifter Punk Rock (Episode 43) In this episode of Dany Schifter Punk Rock, we dive into the raw energy and rebellious spirit of punk. We kick off with Patti Smith Group's "Revenge", a poetic yet powerful track that blends introspection with punk defiance. Then, we amp up the energy with SNFU's "The King Of Skin", a fast-paced, sarcastic anthem from the Canadian hardcore scene. Discount's "History Is History" follows, delivering a melodic yet thought-provoking take on the weight of the past. We also explore the legendary Stooges, the band that ignited the punk movement with Iggy Pop's primal energy and genre-defining sound. To close, we review "Plea For Peace, Punk Rock Music CD" (Asian Man Records), a powerful compilation featuring Alkaline Trio and The Bouncing Souls, proving that punk remains a tool for resistance and change. Punk is not dead. It's alive, loud, and still shaking the system! #DanySchifterPunkRock #PunkRock #PattiSmith #SNFU #Discount #TheStooges #HardcorePunk #PleaForPeace #AsianManRecords #PunkSpirit #DIY #StayRebellious #PunkNeverDies

Back in November 2023, Lenny Kaye from the Patti Smith Group played a tribute show to the amazing box set he compiled "Nuggets" at Cat's Cradle in Carrboro, NC. The Nuggets Boxset profiles lost classics from the 60s psychedelic garage rock era. Matt was fortunate enough to sit down with one of the performers before the show Hugo Burnham (the drummer from Gang of Four)! We discussed a bit of the history of Gang of Four as well as his involvement with the Nuggets tribute shows.http://damagedgoodsradio.com

Robin Taylor Zander (Cheap Trick) joins me for this episode to talk about his debut album, “The Distance.” The album's a welcome and familiar mix of sounds. As Zander says on the album's back cover: “You may hear something that reminds you of a different time or a different place… hopefully this record makes you feel a certain kind of way, whichever way that may be is fine with me” Robin and I talk about “The Distance,” and are joined by legendary producer and engineer Jack Douglas (Cheap Trick, Aerosmith, John Lennon, Patti Smith Group, New York Dolls, Local H, etc.). Douglas' Confidential Records label put out “The Distance,” and Jack helped mix the album. After our conversation, including a few questions thrown to Jack, Robin grabbed his acoustic guitar and played two songs from the album: “One Might Wonder” and “In Front of Me.” Car Con Carne is presented by Alex Ross Art. Interview with Bill Million of The Feelies Formed in Haledon NJ in the 1970's, The Feelies have now released six albums including their critically acclaimed and influential debut Crazy Rhythms, which was voted 49 in the top 100 albums of the 1980s by Rolling Stone magazine and chosen by Spin Magazine as #49 of the best alternative records of all time. Their music has left an indelible mark on the landscape of rock and roll. Supporting the release of their first four albums the band appeared on the The Late Show With David Letterman and in concerts with The Patti Smith Group, R.E.M., and Bob Dylan as well as touring with Lou Reed. In 2008, the Feelies ended a 17-year sabbatical as a group to open for long-time admirers Sonic Youth at Battery Park and then resurrected their tradition of playing low key gigs at strategic intervals throughout the year rather than doing lengthy tours. In 2009, they were invited by R.E.M. to perform at Carnegie Hall in “The Music of REM” charity concert benefitting music education programs for underprivileged youth, then by the artist Dan Graham to play an acoustic set at the opening of his first American retrospective, held at the Whitney Museum: Dan Graham: Beyond at the Whitney Museum of American Art. That same year Bar/None re-issued Crazy Rhythms and The Good Earth, this being the first band-sanctioned CD release of the former. In 2011, they released a new studio album Here Before of which England's The Wire enthused, “Here Before picks up as though they'd never left. The second line- up is fully present, and the basics of their sound have filtered through so many younger bands (from Yo La Tengo to SF Seals to The Chills) that the music possesses a great kind of faux- familiarity. ‘Time Is Right' sounds something like The Terminals doing a Stooges tribute tune. It - and some of the Velvets riff - lifts that occur during the album's later moments- make me remember how nuts this group seemed 30-plus years ago.” In honor of their 40th Anniversary Bar/None Records re-released their third and fourth albums,Only Life and Time for a Witness in early 2015. Lenny Kaye has secured his place in rock history as the Patti Smith Group's longtime guitarist, but he also helped define rock history with one of the most influential compilation albums of all time: Nuggets: Original Artyfacts from the First Psychedelic Era 1965–1968. To create that 1972 double album, Kaye pulled together a largely obscure collection psychedelic and garage-rock songs that made a new kind of sense together, from the Electric Prunes' throbbing “I Had Too Much To Dream (Last Night)” to the guitar freakery of the Count Five's “Psychotic Reaction” to Sagittarius's gently trippy “My World Fell Down.” Now Kaye has expanded upon his work with a 5-LP Nuggets box released by Rhino on Record Store Day. What were his must-haves this time around? How do these songs hit differently 50-plus years later? How has Nuggets affected Kaye's own music-making, and how do his writing sessions with Patti Smith go?

. Lenny Kaye is best known as the guitarist for the Patti Smith Group. He is the author of Lightning Striking: Ten Transformative Moments in Rock and Roll. Plug In. Support the show
Patti Smith Group guitarist and author Lenny Kaye reminds us that “Bob Dylan is still experimenting, seeing who he might be, putting on the weirdest shows ever, upending barriers”. Almost in one breath, Lenny gives forth on working with or listening to Suzanne Vega, John Coltrane, Gayle, The Stooges, Brian Eno, The Byrds, Bing Crosby and Janis Joplin (“I wanted her to be my girlfriend”). His colleague Patti Smith fought for “the freedom to have a field of noise, beyond language. But also: a hit single.” Elvis “is an extraterrestrial: a mutation”. And after two tours supporting Dylan, he confirms that “Bob is private backstage. You're instructed not to look at him. But that was OK. I don't want to meet my idols”. A wise man. And a perfect podcast guest.Lenny Kaye has been the guitarist for The Patti Smith Group since the band's inception in 1974. He produced Patti's first single and worked on the band's hugely influential 70s albums: Horses, Easter, Radio Ethiopia and Wave. Lenny has also produced and/or played with dozens of artists such as R.E.M., James, Soul Asylum, Kristen Hersh and Allen Ginsberg. His seminal anthology of 60s garage rock, Nuggets, defined the genre. His first book was Waylon, The Life Story of Waylon Jennings. You Call It Madness: The Sensuous Song of the Croon was published in 2004. His current book is Lightning Striking: Ten Transformative Moments in Rock and Roll. Lenny also wrote the liner notes to the accompanying double CD (he has been nominated three times for Grammy awards in the liner notes category). As a freelancer, he has written for a wide range of periodicals, including Melody Maker, Creem and Rolling Stone.InstagramTrailerEpisode playlist on AppleEpisode playlist on SpotifyDark Eyes (duet between Dylan and Patti Smith)Listeners: please subscribe and/or leave a review and a rating.Twitter @isitrollingpodRecorded 28th June 2022This show is part of Pantheon Podcasts

Guitarist Lenny Kaye has positioned himself as the ultimate tour guide through the history of rock and roll. Of course he's best known for being Patti Smith's enabler and co-conspirator, having been by her side since day one. He's also a producer helping artists like Suzanne Vega, James, Kristen Hersh and Soul Asylum find their best selves. He's a noted music historian, having curated the indispensable Nuggets compilation and writing articles and liner notes for decades. And, he's also a writer with a brand new book called Lightning Striking which details ten big moments in rock and roll. In this wonderful conversation, Lenny details how he structured the book, how he and Patti made music including Horses, working with Jimmy Iovine and Clive Davis, and his gratitude for a full life spent with what he loves most. It's inspiring stuff. www.patreon.com/thehustlepod
iTunes Spotify Youtube Patreon Bob Gruen is one of the most well-known and respected photographers in rock and roll. From John Lennon to Johnny Rotten; Muddy Waters to the Rolling Stones; Elvis to Madonna; Bob Dylan to Bob Marley; Tina Turner to Debbie Harry, he has captured the music scene for over forty years in photographs that have gained worldwide recognition. Shortly after John Lennon moved to New York in 1971, Bob became John and Yoko's personal photographer and friend, making photos of their working life as well as private moments. In 1974 he created the iconic images of John Lennon wearing a New York City t-shirt and standing in front of the Statue of Liberty making the peace sign – two of the most popular of Lennon's images. As chief photographer for Rock Scene Magazine in the '70s, Bob specialized in candid, behind the scenes photo features. He toured extensively with the emerging punk and new wave bands including the New York Dolls, Sex Pistols, Clash, Ramones, Patti Smith Group and Blondie. Bob has also worked with major rock acts such as Led Zeppelin, The Who, David Bowie, Tina Turner, Elton John, Aerosmith, Kiss and Alice Cooper. In 1989, he documented the epic trip to Russia of the “Moscow Music Peace Festival” featuring Ozzy Osbourne, Mötley Crüe and Bon Jovi. For many years Bob was the official photographer for the New Music Seminar held in New York City, covering dozens of aspiring new bands in the course of a summer week. This seminal body of work reflects a profound commitment and long-standing personal friendship with the artists. His wealth of personal experiences and uncanny memory provide the most illuminating and comprehensive histories of rock youth culture. “All Dolled Up,” a DVD documentary made by Bob Gruen and Nadya Beck of their early '70s video footage of the New York Dolls, was released in 2005 with a follow-up DVD, “Lookin' Fine On Television” released in 2011. In the spring of 2007 FAAP University in Sao Paulo, Brazil, presented an exhibition of Bob Gruen's work. Titled ROCKERS, the exhibition attracted 40,000 visitors. The ROCKERS exhibition was also shown from April to July 2008 at Morrison Hotel Gallery on the Bowery in New York City. Bob's “Sid Vicious with Hot Dog” photo was acquired by The National Portrait Gallery, London, in 1999 for their permanent collection. The Experience Music Project, Seattle, acquired his “Clash Live in Boston”, “Tina Turner Multiple Image”, and “Bloody Sid Vicious” photos for their permanent collection in March 2012. In 2011 award winning director Don Letts made a feature length film titled ‘Rock & Roll Exposed – the Photography of Bob Gruen' including interviews with Iggy Pop, Debbie Harry, Alice Cooper, Yoko Ono, Billie Joe Armstrong and many more. Bob was presented in June 2004 with MOJO Magazine's prestigious Honours List Award for Classic Image in London and in November 2010 he was inducted into the Long Island Music Hall of Fame. For his many charitable contributions, Bob received the first ever John Lennon Real Love Award in December 2014 at the 32nd Annual John Lennon Tribute Concert. More recently he has also photographed Green Day's tour of Europe, Yoko Ono/Plastic Ono Band, Iggy Pop, Ozzy Osbourne, AC/DC, Jesse Malin, Ryan Adams, Courtney Love, The Strypes and other new popular acts. From what is arguably one of the most arresting opening lines on a debut album, to the mournful romanticism of its final track, Patti Smith’s Horses is one of the most significant records in American music history. Just like the gritty downtown New York scene from which it sprang, Horses is marked by a sense of urgency and liberation. In this instalment of “This Woman’s Work,” Classic Album Sundays founder Colleen “Cosmo” Murphy is joined by Lenny Kaye and KT Tunstall to explain how the word freedom defines the album through and through: the social and sexual freedom of the era, the artistic freedom born of a city in crisis, and the freedom of rock ’n’ roll. Oscar Wilde is credited with the quote, “Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery … ”. But in popular music, a cover version, remake, cover song, revival, or simply cover, is a new performance or recording by someone other than the original artist or composer of a song. Sometimes, a cover version can become even more popular than the original. Enjoy these 34 cover songs from the 1980s. Another musical exhibit from The Music Museum. Episode 13 continues our NIT Tournament to determine the greatest rock music artist that didn't make our original 64 “team” NCAA Tournament (see episodes 1-8). Women rock match ups for this episode: (1) Joni Mitchell (gets bye for first 2 rounds) (2) Janis Joplin/Big Brother and the Holding Company (gets bye for first 2 rounds) (3) Jefferson Airplane/Jefferson Starship vs. (9) Patti Smith Group (4) Blondie vs. (9) Sleater-Kinney (5) Heart vs. (8) Kate Bush (6) Pretenders vs. (7) Lucinda Williams Final Four match ups for this episode: Grateful Dead vs. Judas Priest Joy Division/New Order vs. Women's Winner Notes for this episode: Actually #3 should've been matched up against #10, and #4 against #9. My bad. The "title track" to the album Horses was actually part of a larger overall song called "Land" (Part I: "Horses" / Part II: "Land of a Thousand Dances" / Part III: "La Mer(de)"). Lucinda Williams' poet father was named Miller Williams. Michael Bloomfield (not Bloomfeld) played on the first Janis solo album. Not sure how or why I pronounced his name so incorrectly as I am a big fan. James Honeyman-Scott and Pete Farndon from The Pretenders died due to drugs, I should've mentioned. Big Brother's guitarist was Sam Andrew (no "s" at the end).

Courtney Love's band Hole released their second album, Live Through This one week after the death of Kurt Cobain, Love's husband and front man for the grunge giant Nirvana. Hole originated in the punk rock scene, but are often identified with the grunge movement due to Love's relationship with Cobain and their move to Washington to write this album. In addition to frontwoman Love, the band consisted of Eric Erlandson on lead guitar, Kristen Pfaff on bass, and Patty Schemel on drums. Love and Erlandson wrote the songs, and Pfaff and Schemel were newcomers to the group, replacing bassist Jill Emery and drummer Caroline Rue who had left over creative differences. The album was noted for a toned-down and more melodic approach to things than their debut effort. Themes of the album would revolve around aspects of Courtney Love's personal life, including relationships, motherhood, and post-partum depression. A controversy that plagued the album was that much of the work was ghost-written by Kurt Cobain. Band members and producers have consistently denied this, though it is perhaps understandable how a rumor like this would get legs, following on the heels of Cobain's suicide. The only connection between Cobain and the album was that he sang backing vocals on a couple of songs when they were in the recording studio. In fact, many of the tracks were performed during Hole's previous tour. While Live Through This is considered more melodic than their previous album, that is a relative measure - the album itself is still quite raw and gritty. That didn't keep it from becoming a critical and popular success, going multi-platinum by December 1994. Unfortunately, drummer Pfaff would not live to see this feat, having died of a heroin overdose in June, just before Hole was supposed to embark on a world tour. Courtney Love would continue through several iterations of Hole, and pursue songwriting, acting, a writer of multiple manga volumes and a memoir. VioletThis song is the opening track for the album. It was inspired by Love's relationship with Billy Corgan of the Smashing Pumpkins, just prior to her relationship with Cobain. Love said this song was "about a jerk, I hexed him, and made him lose his hair." Miss WorldThe second track on the album was the first single. It is about a person who is loved by everyone, but is empty inside and drowning in depression. "I'm Miss World. Somebody kill me."Asking For ItThis deeper cut is about rape. Love talked about a time when she would stage dive, and found her clothes ripped off. Love felt like she was raped by the audience. Love's life and upbringing was a tumultuous one, with rebellion, drugs, and broken family relationships.Doll PartsThe second single from the album is likely the best known one. It reflects her insecurity with Kurt Cobain. Love and Cobain both went into rehab when Love was pregnant. Unfortunately Cobain would run away from the rehab center shortly before his suicide. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Theme from Space Ghost for “Space Ghost Coast to Coast”This comedy spoof of a late night talk show was the first original series produced by the Cartoon Network. STAFF PICKS:“Player's Ball” by OutKastBrian brings us Southern Rap from Atlanta's own OutKast. The song discusses living in the south and living in the hip hop culture. This is off OutKast's debut album entitled "Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik."“Rocks” by Primal ScreamBruce's staff pick is off Primal Scream's fourth album "Give Out But Don't Give Up." Bobby Gillespie and Jim Beattie originally formed this Scottish rock band with a psychedelic sound, but went more classic rock and blues with this album.“Found Out About You” by the Gin BlossomsRob's staff pick features the fourth single from the Gin Blossoms' second album, “New Miserable Experience.” The Gin Blossoms formed in Tempe Arizona in 1987, and were identified as alternative rock and “jangle pop.” The name comes from a picture of W.C. Fields describing his ruddy complexion. “Because the Night” by 10,000 ManiacsWayne's pick features a cover originally performed by The Patti Smith Group from 1978. Natalie Merchant fronts 10,000 Maniacs in an Unplugged version of this classic written by Patti Smith and Bruce Springsteen INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:Main Theme from the motion picture “Bad Girls”This instrumental was the soundtrack from a western featuring Madeliene Stowe, Andie MacDowell, and Drew Barrymore.
Episode 33 - The Emporium brings you the music of The Scorpions, Patti Smith Group, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Soul Asylum, Nick Drake, Taylor Swift, Steeley Dan, Lionel Ritchie and Keith Urban.
Sometimes the greatest treasures are hiding in plain sight. Such is the case with Christine Smith. As a 20 year veteran of rock and roll’s inner circles, she is perhaps best known for her international touring and recording work with Crash Test Dummies, Jesse Malin, Ryan Adams, and the band Marah. She’s also shared the stage with Bruce Springsteen, Shane McGowan, Amy Grant, Tommy Stinson of The Replacements, Alejandro Escovedo, Chuck Mead, H.R. of Bad Brains, and Lenny Kaye of the Patti Smith Group, just to name a few. Now, in 2019, she’s stepping from the background into the spotlight with her solo album “Meet Me on the Far Side of a Star.”
Punk perfection bookending a questionable origin story and some ... interesting performances. Our conversation with this terrific designer was part of the Museum of Arts and Design’s exhibition Too Fast to Live, Too Young to Die: Punk Graphics 1976-1986. The musician was Lenny Kaye of the Patti Smith Group, a luminary of that era, who made a shocking revelation: he played in a fraternity band.

Bob Gruen is one of the most well-known and respected photographers in rock and roll. Shortly after John Lennon moved to New York in 1971, Bob became John and Yoko’s personal photographer and friend, making photos of their working life as well as private moments. In 1974 he created the iconic images of John Lennon wearing a New York City t-shirt and standing in front of the Statue of Liberty making the peace sign – two of the most popular of Lennon’s images. As chief photographer for Rock Scene Magazine in the ’70s, Bob specialized in candid, behind the scenes photo features.

The Directors Club tries to live up to the first part of its name, as in this episode we take a look at two seperate directors at once: English filmmaking brothers Martin ("In Bruges") and John Michael ("Calvary") McDonagh. While they haven't officially worked on a film together, there are some fascinating connections of dark humor, empathy, faith, and a desire to subvert expectations that can be found when looking through their films together, from "Second Death" through the award-winning "Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri" 2:30 John Michael's "The Second Death" ("The Ghost In You", Psychedelic Furs) 9:43 Martin's "Six Shooter" ("Come As You Are", Nirvana) 22:05 Martin's "In Bruges" ("Bedlam in Belgium", AC/DC) 55:20 John Michael's "The Guard" ("Changing Of The Guards", The Patti Smith Group) 1:09:11 Martin's "Seven Psychopaths" ("Crazy", Gnarls Barkeley) 1:22:43 John Michael's "Calvary" ("We Shall Not Overcome", Frank Turner) 1:41:47 John Michael's "War On Everyone" ("War", Edwin Starr) 2:01:02 Martin's "Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri" ("The Sign", Ace of Base)

After a debilitating injury stood between her disjointed second album and the imminent recording of her third, Patti Smith wrote a poem that would inform her next collection of songs by taking her physical pain and turning it into sonic glory. The poem "Easter" detailed her own “resurrection,” her journey to triumph over hardship. A concept was born and the album that would share the poem’s title became Smith’s greatest commercial breakthrough. Containing the monster hit “Because The Night,” the controversial “Rock N Roll N****r,” and raucous, protest-ready “Till Victory,” Easter is a celebration not only of human will, but of female power. Negotiating for complete creative control over her album (a year before 9 to 5 brought gender inequity in the workplace to the national spotlight), Smith made no concessions to how male record executives thought she should present herself. Appearing raw and unpolished on the album cover, growling her desires and bellowing her neuroses in her music, and standing by her artistic convictions, Patti Smith demanded that women be seen on their terms, exactly as they wanted to be. Forty years on, Easter remains a catalyst for feminism, a stronghold for lyric poetry, and an icon of blood-pumping, heart-racing, hair-raising rock and roll.
The Director's Club concludes our look at the films of Terrence Malick, from an appropriately epic examination of "The Tree of Life" through the more improvisational and abstract efforts of his later movies. Thanks to the help of Peter Richards from the Chicago Film Discussion Group, we aim to get a fuller look at what's amazing, infuriating, and fascinatingly unique about this later part of his movie career! 0:00 "The Tree Of Life" (The "most" Malick?, Chastain's emotional foundation, "Funeral Canticle" byJohn Tavener and Mother Thekla, the Global Fast Forward, "Lacrimosa 2" by Zbigniew Preisner, Jurrasic Mercy, Navigating Grace and Nature, Pitt's best performance, "Snippets of Memory", "Siciliana Da Antiche Danze Ed Arie Suite III" by Ottorino Respighi, "MVlast Moldau (Vltava)" byBed.ich Smetana, some staggering images, holding onto the light, "The Grande Messe des morts, Op. 5" by Hector Berlioz) 42:49 "To The Wonder" (the C.S.I. On the occasion of her autobiography Art Sex Music's American book release, industrial music pioneer and acclaimed performance artist Cosey Fanni Tutti (Throbbing Gristle, Chris and Cosey) sat down with Patti Smith Group's Lenny Kaye to discuss her fascinating life on the margins. Their conversation, which took place at McNally Jackson bookstore in New York, takes in the rise and fall of Throbbing Gristle, transgressive art shows, a hilarious story about Tutti using "Because The Night" during her strip routine, and much more. It begins with a stage-setting reading from Art Sex Music. Many thanks to McNally Jackson and Faber and Faber for allowing Talkhouse to record and release this fantastic conversation. Also, we want to hear from you! Head on over to bit.ly/TalkhouseSurvey to fill out a two-minute survey about you, our audience, so we can hear about how to bring you the best conversations. To sweeten the deal, we’ll be raffling off a Fender Mahogany Acoustic Guitar, a rad nine-LP prize pack courtesy of the great crews at Secretly Group and Dead Oceans, a custom Levi’s jean jacket, and four $25 Amazon gift cards. Good luck! —Elia Einhorn, Talkhouse Music Podcast host and producer

The Brecht/Weill song, 'Mack The Knife' first appeared in 'The Threepenny Opera' in Berlin in 1928. Sung about the criminal MacHeath, the 'play with music' is based on John Gay's 'The Beggar's Opera', who was inspired by the real-life English highwayman, Jack Sheppard. The song became a hit when performed in 1959 by Bobby Darin. Ella Fitzgerald famously forgot the words when performing live in Berlin in 1960 and her improvised version won a Grammy. Suzi Quatro talks about how she performed it with her father as a child, playing bongos to accompany him, and Lenny Kaye from the Patti Smith Group recalls how he and Patti did a version of 'Mack The Knife' at their first ever performance together at St Marks Church in New York on 10th February 1971, as it was Brecht's birthday. Film-maker Malcolm Clark tells the story of the song's first public performer, Kurt Gerron, an actor and director, who took the song into the darkest places of the Third Reich.
