In Episode 457 of No Way, Jose!, host Jose Galison welcomes philosopher and cultural theorist Steven DeLay for a deep dive into the iconic first season of True Detective. Together, they unravel the layers of this gritty masterpiece, exploring its philosophical underpinnings, narrative brilliance, and haunting aesthetic. With DeLay's keen eye for how culture is engineered, the conversation takes a fresh approach, dissecting the show's portrayal of human nature, morality, and existential dread against the backdrop of a decaying American South. Fans of the series and newcomers alike will find plenty to chew on as Jose and Steven connect the dots between Rust Cohle's brooding nihilism and the broader forces shaping our world. But it doesn't stop at surface-level analysis. True to the No Way, Jose! spirit, Jose and Steven venture into the parapolitical shadows that echo through True Detective's eerie storyline. From conspiracies of power to the hidden hands steering society, they explore how the show's cultish mysteries and institutional corruption might reflect more than just fiction. With DeLay's philosophical rigor and Galison's knack for sniffing out the unseen, this episode offers a mind-bending blend of cultural critique and speculative intrigue. Discover how creator Nic Pizzolatto and a talented cast brought these deeply flawed and fascinating characters to life, creating a television experience that's as thought-provoking as it is enthralling.Special in this episode, we're focusing on the show's unique storytelling approach, the symbolism woven into its narrative, and the unforgettable cinematographic moments that set "True Detective" apart.
Does Time Magazine's "Person of the Year" matter even just a little bit? Are Taylor Swift and George Santos truly folk heroes? Joe Biden gets debriefed on the dangers of AI by watching a blockbuster action movie while deeply sundowning, is mystified by his own deepfake memes, and was gripped by near-total confusion while people chanted the word "Genocide!" at him in Nantucket, surrounded by holiday cheer and flash photography. Poor little guy's had a hard couple of months. No one's had it tougher, really. The Onion lists all the terms being used in lieu of "children" to decribe non-adult Palestinians and it's funny and upsettlingly accurate. Israel uses AI tech literally called 'Gospel' to help intentionally target more civilians. No one's even pretending about this anymore, accept for that ventriloquest dummy from hell, John Kirby. Pentagon scientists held a conference on creating supersoldiers, that will be "flooded with pain-numbing stimulants," tactically assess and eliminate their programmed targets until they're disposed of likewise. The DeSantis v. Newsome debate symbolizes the abysmal state of the union and its half-assed culture wars. Only the outsider politician/author of "the most important book since Adolf Hitler's MEIN KAMPF" (Black Hitler: Kobe-Lebron Goebbels Conquers America), Barack Obama Mandela (legal name) can pull us back from the brink. He must shove aside the demonic creature in human skin suit, Adam Schiff, and ascend to (the late and likewise demonic creature) Diane Feinstein's empty Congressional seat. Finally, some planes were seen behaving badly and Rust Cohle tells us about the curse of consciousness as a bedtime story before we sign off. Guten Rutsch!

Episode 38 Breakdown: Catching up with the boys (:48) What we're drinking/Beer news (8:25) (Agua Straight from Todd's Apartment and Starbucks Viatnam Da Lat Reserve Blend) Metal news (17:29) Upcoming Tours (38:14) Brewtal Alumni Updates (39:28) New music (43:38) Featured band (58:16) (Vancouver BC Deathcore Outfit Carcosa) Synopsis: Stare into the Void with your boys as Todd and Arie take this episode to celebrate the legacy of H.P Lovecraft, and the lyrical content of this week's featured band, by going sober! The weird doesn't stop there, though! Todd will be channeling his inner Greek gods and goddesses out of the country while Arie plans to make his triumphant return to live music. What???? The boys channel different forms of lifebloods with Todd snagging some water straight from his apartment's tap and Arie uses water to brew his Starbucks Reserved blend coffee. Who are these people?? Whitechapel announce their new album 'Kin,' and drop a FIRE new single 'Lost Boy,' Angelmaker, Loathe, and Bring Me the Horizon are all teasing new music, there's no bad blood, only blood brothers, for Lil Nas X and Tony Hawk, Motionless in White hit the road for the first time in two years, and we get HUGE releases from Iron Maiden, Carnifex, and Foreign Pain. Will the madness ever end?? That's a rhetorical question. You'll be too scared to sleep after losing yourself with our Featured Band Carcosa blending the worlds of True Detective and H.P. Lovecraft for their track Hypnos. Time is a flat circle, hopwolves. Turn it up to 11, crack open that beer, it's about to get BREWTAL! Featured Band: This week's episode features Hypnos from Carcosa. Bio: If time is a flat circle, then 2 things are true: 1) Deathcore's return was inevitable. 2) Andrew Baena, Johnny Ciardullo, Cooper Lagace and Travis Regnier were destined to form another band. The quartet killed off predecessor Galactic Pegasus' djenty metalcore as their writing trended deadlier. So intense was Carcosa's devotion to death that the body was still warm when they started. Their June 2020 unveiling and release of the 'Absent' EP 2 months later took them from disregard of to mastery over death. Carcosa stares into the abyss—knowing everything happens in cycles but with nihilistic knowledge, everything ends. Their name, as well as the black, yellow and spiral-laden imagery, were inspired by 'True Detective.' One could argue their lyrics and sound came from the hopeless mind of Rust Cohle. The music borders on apocalyptic but accepts the bleak end as the twin of the hopeful beginning. It's the kind of doom-and-gloom through which The Acacia Strain and Chelsea Grin channeled their brutality, tempered with the futuristic noises of contemporaries like Brand of Sacrifice. The lyrics on debut LP 'Anthology' don't follow the tragic journey of their debut, but the collection renews its endless loop construction. The new release drops on the year anniversary of its predecessor (8/19) and the final track seamlessly segues to the opening of both. Though done intentionally for 'Absent,' on 'Anthology' it happened without conscious thought; time is a flat circle, indeed. What Carcosa is drinking: Andrew (guitar) and Johnny (vocals) are the only two people in the band that drink beer consistently but Johnny can say with full confidence that both of their favorite beers are 1664's Kronenbourg Blanc Make sure to give Carcosa some love via any of the following: Website | LISTEN | Facebook | Instagram Jam Hypnos and other gnarly tracks from previous Featured Bands on our Bands to Watch For playlist Beers fueling this week's episode include Agua Straight from the Tap in Todd's Apartment (Todd's pick) and Starbucks Vietnam Da Lat reserve Blend (Arie's pick.) This week's episode we're joined by Collin & Sayre to discuss how Time is a Flat Circle is both a delicious HenHouse beer and an excellent piece of existential exposition posited by one of the greatest characters to ever grace the silver screen, Rust Cohle! Matthew McConaughey's incredible performance as the brooding and poetic lawman on HBO's True Detective season 1 was dope enough to inspire a beer name so we decided it was definitely time to feature it on the podcast. I mean it always was the time but don't get us started...
In this episode, Michael and Shane discuss gumshoes, private dicks, tecs, sleuths, flat foots (feet?), shooflies, and all the private detectives from TV shows they can think of. Episode 265: The Pig Was Cool This week Host Dave Bledsoe explains how his life coach has always been Jimmy McNulty from The Wire. (Yeah, we can see it.) On the show this week we tackle the idea of a world without police. (Imagine that!) Along the way we learn how Dave wandered into his early life career as a cop. (The same way he wanders into a dive bar, apathy and laziness.) Later we learn how he wandered right back out of the job. (Ironically, it was the same way he LEAVES a dive bar, by being thrown out!) Along the way we learn about one of the Bad Dave's in the world who “trains” cops to treat citizens like insurgents. Then we examine in detail what people mean when they say “Defund the Police” only to learn it isn't the scary idea the cops want you to think it is. (Kinda like how Black people are not scary like the cops say they are!) Then we offer some actionable ways to implement real change in the police without scaring all the white folks with “crazy ideas”. (Which will make young progressive call us names because the ideas aren't crazy enough.) Our Sponsor this week is Fat Leo's Law Enforcement Training, when you just want a glassy eyed sociopath on the street, you want Fat Leo's. True Detective very much helped to popularize the view of pessimism as tenable philosophical ground to the national television-viewing audience. The story of Rust Cohle is one of bleak reality almost too real to bear. Thomas Ligotti, likewise, broadcast his own philosophical pessimism to horror-savvy readers with his book “The Conspiracy Against The Human Race”. In this episode I discuss both popular accounts of pessimism and my own experience and investigations into the abyss. It's impossible to mention the philosophy of Ligotti without mentioning his predecessor, H.P. Lovecraft, and his incomprehensible creations like Cthulhu. Perhaps the reality of existence truly is too much. Then again, the philosophy of Buddhism accepts much the same premises as philosophical pessimism, but comes to radically different conclusions. Maybe the answer is to strive in the face of suffering per Dr. Jordan Peterson and Dr. Viktor Frankl. As always, I leave the answers up to you to figure out. Let me know what you come up with. We live in a golden age of television, but even some of the best series stick around too long. Unlike many of its contemporaries, though, HBO has a good habit of identifying ideas that don't need to linger, and while True Detective has three seasons, they're all detached from one another. The first season -- running eight episodes back in early 2014 -- is widely considered one of the best miniseries ever created, with exceptional performances, amazing writing, and a setting so thoroughly realized, it's as if it's the main character. So let's delve into the story of detectives Rust Cohle and Marty Hart, the brutal and sadistic murders they uncover in the Louisiana Bayou, and their 17-year long saga to find the truth of these crimes... and the reality of their relationship with one another. "I think the honorable thing for our species to do is deny our programming, stop reproducing. Walk hand in hand into extinction one last midnight. Brothers and sisters opting out of a raw deal." These are the words spoken by Rust Cohle, in ep. 1 of True Detective's first season. The boys gather round for a deep dive into all things neo-noir, conspiratorial, and desolate within the TD oeuvre. We also give an update on everybody's favorite clown boy, and head down memory lane. Join us on the walk towards extinction!
This Valentine's Day the girls discuss seaboards, Jo's pathological attraction to Rust Cohle, why Will Smith would be the ultimate ghost, and the 2009 romantic comedy Ghost of Girlfriends Past, starring Matthew McConaughey and Jennifer Garner.
This week, three major topics...all spanning a good chunk of time. @JMartOutkick reviews HBO's newest drama The Deuce, Season 3 of the Netflix hit Narcos, the Game of Thrones Season 7 finale, and reacts to the news of True Detective's Ozarks setting and vague backstory. Also brief comments on Scientology and the Aftermath as well as the return of Mr. Robot next month on USA. ALSO: Jenny strikes it rich, but Horace isn't happy about it. Benjamin makes a decision that could impact the entire Holbrook clan.
SHOW NOTES EPISODE 89: “YOU CAN'T FIX STUPID” This week Host Dave Bledsoe takes on Big Dictionary in his never ending quest to have Bloosnargl accepted as an actual word. (Bloosnargl (n): The overwhelming feeling of relief and joy after taking a really big dump. --Dave exited the men's room with a spring in his step and feeling all bloosnargl.) He also takes issue with the idea of “Post Truth” being Oxford's word of the year, since it's a bullshit term and the idea is ripped off from Colbert. Along the way we learn about the history of fake news in America, and how it gave us the truth about Jefferson going black and not coming back. We also get a Latin lesson no one asked for and learn the the truth about Bat Boy. (Hint: Think Elvis). There is a stunning revelation about Dave regarding the duration of his belief in Santa Claus. (Awkward!) Conspiracies are debunked, feelings are hurt and apologies are not given. Except to Santa who finally did show up with that Millennium Falcon we'd been asking for. Promotional consideration this week provided by Gut Check, who wants you to know there is nothing you can't do if you don't accept the truth!
The Rev. Mark Weathers joins the show to discuss being the chaplain version of True Detective's Rust Cohle, depression, liberation theology, bullying, his time as a Roman Catholic and being a pugilist pacifist. For more on this month's sponsor, The National Conference on Youth Ministry, go to NCYM.org.
"Rust was maybe the least confused person I've ever met. But he had his own problems. Memory is a slippery transaction. When someone's telling you the truth, it's their truth, isn't it?" Nothing's ever fulfilled, not until the very end. And closure—nothing is ever over. -RUST COHLE, True Detective

When a hoard of ferocious fire breathing dragons emerge from deep within the earth only King Leonidas, Batman and Rust Cohle can stop them. This to-the-point movie is full of massive plot holes but regardless is great to watch. 35 mins

This week we discuss Reign of Fire, a movie we liked back in 2002 that has garnered cult following in the intervening years... but is it any good? So True Detective is over. Now what am I supposed to overanalyze on Reddit? Sure, the food on Hannibal looks amazing, but the show lacks that certain je-ne-sais-Carcosa. I need a crime TV fix, people!Luckily, I have a friend in Nancie Clare, founder of the forthcoming Speaking of Mysteries blog and podcast. When it comes to ferreting out the best in crime TV and books, Clare is the Rust Cohle—the most dogged of them all. And she just happens to be my special guest co-host this week, dishing on exactly what you need to be watching next (and reading, now that Malcolm McKay, author of the breakout Glasgow Trilogy of crime novels, doesn't have anything new on the shelves this very second). What else do I have for you this week? Ever wonder if those pricey makeup brands—the ones so often slathered on celebrities during the Oscars—are really worth it? For the next several weeks, I'll be drilling down on a variety of beauty categories, getting the straight dish from top-of-the-line red carpet makeup artists about what they really carry around in their handbags. And it ain't always the spendiest of balms.Plus! TV industry vet Marrissa O'Leary answers a question that you yourself have probably wondered—that is, if you've ever watch the end credits of a network TV show. O'Leary, a former head of business affairs for not one but two major TV production studios, dips into her vast pool of knowledge—and shares wisdom from a couple of her favorite showrunners, John Rogers and Javier Grillo-Marxuach—to answer a burning question from listener AdamX6000.Enjoy!
Russ is a cold-hearted son of a bitch who separates truth and faith more than Woody Harrelson takes bong loads. McConnaughey's character in the new HBO Original is one for the books, so we decided to theme an episode of Brightside Radio after him.
