Guest: Ryan Bangert, Senior Vice President, Strategic Initiatives & Special Counsel to the President for Alliance Defending Freedom   If you'd like to watch this podcast, check out the PCA YouTube page.   Updates on a few important Free Speech/Freedom of Religion cases: Adam Smith-Connor, UK case dealing with an Army veteran who was arrested for a silent prayer offered outside an abortion facility. The charges are certainly absurd, but it does demonstrate the lengths to which the government can go and will go to protect abortion rights. Vice President J.D. Vance mentioned this case in his comments a few weeks ago talking about the importance of defending free speech rights. Jack Phillips, Colorado baker sued for refusing to bake a cake for a same-sex wedding recently had a major victory at the Colorado Supreme Court following his third lawsuit to try and force him to violate his conscience, this time it was to try to force him to bake a cake for a gender transition. This article in the New York Post from 2023 revealed that thousands of public schools actually have a policy in place to keep a student's gender transition a secret from parents. ADF has filed several cases against these school districts on behalf of parents who have a right to know about their child. To keep up with these and other important issues, visit Alliance Defending Freedom's website at adflegal.org Ryan recommends that you pray for the strength and integrity of the church to continue to stand on God's Word as the Truth and not compromise on these critical issues.

Artificial intelligence technology is making its way into more areas of daily life. But there are still many unknowns about AI, including major legal questions about the ways the technology should be governed, and which AI-generated speech is, or is not, protected under the First Amendment.  Generative AI, in its most basic form, is “trained on vast amounts of data,” according to Ryan Bangert, senior vice president of strategic initiatives at Alliance Defending Freedom. “It ingests petabytes of information in order to learn how human language works, in order to understand how it is that human syntax grammar is structured, and then it predicts what comes next.” Generative AI is “not a mind, it's not a consciousness, it's not a human being,” Bangert says. “It's a piece of software, a very complex piece of software, that's fulfilling an algorithmic function.” Therefore, he adds, generative AI is “not a First Amendment rights-bearing entity.” In their new paper, “The Ghost in the Machine: How Generative AI Will Test the Bounds of the First Amendment,” Bangert and Jeremy Tedesco, senior vice president of corporate engagement at Alliance Defending Freedom, parse the relationship between AI and the First Amendment.  Bangert and Tedesco join “The Daily Signal Podcast” to discuss the fight to protect free speech amid rapidly changing AI technology use.

It's Thursday, January 4th, A.D. 2024. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard at www.TheWorldview.com. I'm Adam McManus. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Jonathan Clark Nicaraguan authorities arrested 14 priests Authorities in Nicaragua have arrested at least 14 priests, two seminarians, and a bishop in recent days. Some priests face arrest simply for publicly praying for imprisoned bishop Rolando Alvarez. He is a leading critic of the country's president, Daniel Ortega.  Ortega's regime has been cracking down on descent, especially from priests who voice religious liberty concerns.  The U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom noted that the uptick in persecution in recent years comes “despite the high level of persecution against Catholic leaders since protests in 2018. Now, 2022 was the first year in which the government imprisoned members of the clergy.”  Kenyan bishop opposes Pope on blessing homosexual couples Meanwhile in Africa, a Kenyan bishop has prohibited blessings for people living in vile passions. Paul Kariuki Njiru is the first bishop of the newly created Diocese of Wote. He called out the Pope for a recent declaration that authorizes some kind of blessing for same-sex couples.  Njiru wrote, “The Declaration … should be rejected in totality, and we faithfully uphold the Gospel teachings … on marriage and sexuality.  … We bishops, like Saints Peter and John, will say, ‘Judge for yourselves whether it is right in God's sight for us to obey you rather than God' (Acts 4:19–20). … For pastoral reasons, I therefore exhort my priests to invite those couples to a life of conversion by the words of the Gospel: ‘Repent and believe in the Gospel' (Mark 1:14–15).” World grew by 75 million people in 2023 The world's population grew by 75 million people last year, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.  This brings the total number of people to over eight billion. The worldwide population growth rate was 1%. Every second, there are an estimated 4.3 births and two deaths globally.  The U.S. grew by only half a percent, adding 1.7 million people for a total population of 335.8 million. The U.S. is on track for one of its slowest decades on record for population growth. Texas vs. Biden on abortion Yesterday, a U.S. federal appeals court sided with Texas against the Biden administration in an abortion case. After the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade in 2022, the Biden administration issued a directive to force hospitals and emergency rooms to offer abortions. The state of Texas challenged the abortion mandate along with the American Association of Pro-Life Obstetricians and Gynecologists and the Christian Medical and Dental Associations. Ryan Bangert with Alliance Defending Freedom told Life News, “Hospitals—especially emergency rooms—are centers for preserving life. The government has no business transforming them into abortion clinics.” 510 bills oppose homosexuality State legislators introduced a record 510 bills last year that oppose sexually perverted lifestyles. This according to the pro-homosexual American Civil Liberties Union. The number of such measures is up from 180 in 2022. Of the 500 plus bills, 84 are now law across 23 states. Tennessee and North Dakota tied for passing the most bills. The bills included bans on public shows of sexually perverted lifestyles as well as the accommodation of people pretending to be the opposite sex through sports or bathrooms. 100 million more devices downloaded YouVersion Bible app YouVersion.com reports people downloaded and used its Bible apps at the highest rate ever last year. Downloads increased by 100 million devices, and daily usage increased by 20%. Most of the downloads take place outside the U.S. like in India, Africa, and Latin America. Once again, the verse that people engaged with the most last year was Isaiah 41:10. It says, “So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand." Bobby Gruenewald, the founder of YouVersion.com, said, “More than ever before, we are seeing the global Church unify around God's Word.” Anniversary of church leader's birth And finally, today marks the birth of church leader and scholar James Ussher on January 4, 1581. He was the Church of Ireland's Archbishop of Armagh and supported the Protestant Reformation in his country during the early 1600s. Ussher is particularly known for his massive work, The Annals of the Old Testament. His chronology of the Bible dated creation to October 23, 4004 B.C.  Close And that's The Worldview in 5 Minutes on this Thursday, January 4th in the year of our Lord 2024. Subscribe by iTunes or email to our unique Christian newscast at www.TheWorldview.com. The news of Texas covered today includes:Our Lone Star story of the day:  Ken Paxton's impeachment imbroglio  continues and testimony and new evidence keeps knocking down the poorly prepared House impeachment articles. Worse, we learn that it appears House investigators, under the sanctimonious git Rep. Andrew Murr, have hidden evidence from the defense and their own lawyers – why?Likely because like other evidence coming forward in cross-examination after cross-examination, it doesn't support their trumped up allegations against Paxton. I play audio today related to this.Today I explain why there has been relatively little in the press about the 2nd key witness Ryan Bangert and his testimony. First, after an hour on the stand he is likely disliked by even the most anti-Paxton liberal in the press pool. Bangert is everything a lawyer does not want on the stand and arrogance pours forth like Niagara Falls. But worse, like Mateer, what he offers up doesn't support the charges against Paxton in the manner the House intended. We also learn of a key text to him previously not disclosed by the House managers that puts the proper context on non-official-opinion A.G. opinion in question.I offer substantial audio today to give you a feel of how things are going.Again, as I said yesterday, there is a common theme of an arrogance from the staffers, the bureaucrats, that only they are to run everything; everything that happens should conform to their personal ideas of what is normal or usual,, and; that the elected boss is a figure head who should not actually lead or impose his view of policy upon the agency. This is common across the permanent bureaucracy in Washington and states but it surprising how strong it is from the conservative attorneys. It is as if they do not see this in themselves.Rubber-stamping Star Chambers; the shameful vote of Texas state senators to accept “evidence gathered in violation of the law” in the impeachment of Attorney General Ken Paxton. Our Lone Star story of the day is sponsored by Allied Compliance Services providing the best service in DOT, business and personal drug and alcohol testing since 1995.First positive oil and gas rig count report in a while.Biden gets nastier on the border and Texas gets to keep the buoys in the Rio Grande for a while longer.Listen on the radio, or station stream, at 5pm Central. Read more about the impeachment: https://thetexan.news/paxton_impeachment/Today, attorneys in the impeachment trial focused on finishing testimony from Ryan Bangert, one of the former deputy attorneys general who raised criminal allegations against Attorney General Ken Paxton. Ryan Vassar, another former employee of the attorney general's office, was called to testify next. Some major highlights of the day included:Bangert discussed a lunch he had with Paxton and Austin real estate developer Nate Paul, saying that he had “ethical concerns” about the meeting. Bangert said that during the lunch, Paul detailed his “theory of grievances against the Mitte Foundation” — a charitable organization in litigation against Paul's business.Bangert claimed that it was a “professional death warrant” to bring the allegations against Paxton to the FBI and asserted that he was “constructively discharged” from his position, having his responsibilities stripped from him in the weeks that followed the criminal complaint.During the cross-examination, defense attorney Anthony Osso homed in on the allegations made against Paxton about the so-called “midnight opinion” — an informal opinion issued by the office that the whistleblowers say allegedly benefited Nate Paul. The prosecution then called Ryan Vassar, another former employee of the attorney general's office, to the stand. Unlike the first two witnesses, Vassar was fired and joined the lawsuit under the Texas Whistleblowers Act.Vassar became visibly emotional when questioned by the prosecution regarding his reaction to being referred to as a “rogue employee” by Paxton.

Subscribe to support The Texan: https://thetexan.news/subscribe/The second day of the impeachment trial continued with more testimony from Jeff Mateer, the former first assistant attorney general appointed under Paxton who was one of the eight employees to raise allegations of bribery and abuse of office to the FBI in 2020. For this episode, The Texan reporters Brad Johnson and Matt Stringer are joined by Patrick Svitek of The Texas Tribune. We'll get into more details of some of these highlights from today:Paxton, who left after the lunch break on the first day of the trial, did not return to the chamber for the proceedings.Attorneys for the House and Paxton began the day with an agreement on which evidence to pre-admit, and Paxton's team said that the suspended attorney general has “nothing to hide” and would drop their objection to evidence on the grounds of privileged communication. With repeated objections of leading the witness from Paxton attorney Tony Buzbee, House attorney Rusty Hardin questioned Mateer regarding the timeline and reasoning he had when raising allegations to the FBI.The first name drop of Anthony Fauci, Texans for Lawsuit Reform, and George P. Bush.Mateer said he believed Mr. Paxton was “under the influence” or being “blackmailed” because he could not explain why he was working so hard to help Nate Paul, but that Mateer ultimately became convinced it was due to an extramarital affair.During the cross-examination, Buzbee attempted to draw a distinction between state code and the first article of impeachment regarding the attorney general's authority to become involved in lawsuits related to charitable organizations — an apparent attempt to throw that article into doubt.Buzbee accused Mateer and the other whistleblowers for staging a coup against Attorney General Paxton. After finishing the questioning of Mateer late in the day, the House impeachment team called another former employee, Ryan Bangert, to the stand.

Why This Lawsuit Over Vaccine Mandate Has ‘Good Chance' of Reaching Supreme Court

The same day President Joe Biden announced details of his COVID-19 vaccine mandate for private employers, The Daily Wire filed a lawsuit to stop it. The Daily Wire, a media outlet founded by conservative commentator and author Ben Shapiro, filed the suit because the mandate on employers of 100 or more workers is unconstitutional, the organization said in a public statement Nov. 4. Alliance Defending Freedom, a Christian legal aid organization, is representing The Daily Wire in its fight to halt Biden's vaccine mandate. Although it is risky for any lawyer to predict a case will go to the Supreme Court, Ryan Bangert, a senior attorney for Alliance Defending Freedom, says this case is different. “I think this one has a very good chance of going to the Supreme Court because of the stakes,” Bangert says. Bangert joins “The Daily Signal Podcast” to discuss the constitutionality of the vaccine mandate and what could be next for The Daily Wire's lawsuit. There will also be a panel discussion with college presidents Dr. Adam Wright (DBU) and Dr. Blake Thompson (Mississippi College) along with Alliance Defending Freedom attorney and former PCA parent Ryan Bangert discussing the “cancel culture” on the college campus and how as Christians we need to learn to engage and not shy away from the opportunity to live boldly for Christ while in college. A small Missouri college is taking the Biden administration to court over a directive that allows biological men who "identify” as women to live in female-only dormitories. The College of the Ozarks, a Christian school with just over 1,500 students, filed a lawsuit against the Biden administration in April after the Department of Housing and Urban Development issued a directive requiring colleges and universities to open dorm rooms and other sex-specific spaces to individuals of the opposite sex.The directive came after President Joe Biden issued his “Executive Order on Preventing and Combating Discrimination on the Basis of Gender Identity or Sexual Orientation.” “We're seeing an example that from our point of view is out of touch with reality,” Dr. Jerry Davis, president of the College of the Ozarks in Point Outlook, Missouri, said of the directive. He added that the order will “do irreparable harm to a school like this. And it seems to me that somebody is going to have to stand up and say what this really is … . It's an overreach [of government].” The College of the Ozarks is represented by the Christian legal organization Alliance Defending Freedom.
