The Sacramento City Attorney's Office warned a chain retail store that it could face a public nuisance charge due to a large number of phone calls placed to police when thieves repeatedly stole from its Land Park location. A person with knowledge of the warning, but not authorized to speak publicly due to the fear of retaliation, told The Sacramento Bee that city officials threatened the Target at 2505 Riverside Blvd. in the past year with an administrative fine. A Sacramento police spokesman confirmed the location — a site that prompted heavy ire from Land Park residents due to repeated crimes — when asked about the apparent warning. The alleged warning issued by Sacramento city officials — and similar actions by other cities across the state — prompted lawmakers to add an amendment to a retail theft bill that would outlaw such threats made by authorities. Pursuing legal actions against businesses for reporting crime brought heavy criticism from law enforcement.

THE NEW MILLIONS: 3/4: A Beginner's Guide to America: For the Immigrant and the Curious by Roya Hakakian https://www.amazon.com/Beginners-Guide-America-Immigrant-Curious/dp/0525656065/ref=tmm_hrd_swatch_0?_encoding=UTF8&qid=1622853677&sr=1-1 A stirring, witty, and poignant glimpse into the bewildering American immigrant experience from someone who has lived it. Also, a mirror held up to America. Into the maelstrom of unprecedented contemporary debates about immigrants in the United States, this perfectly timed book gives us a portrait of what the new immigrant experience in America is really like. Written as a "guide" for the newly arrived, and providing "practical information and advice," Roya Hakakian, an immigrant herself, reveals what those who settle here love about the country, what they miss about their homes, the cruelty of some Americans, and the unceasing generosity of others. She captures the texture of life in a new place in all its complexity, laying bare both its beauty and its darkness as she discusses race, sex, love, death, consumerism, and what it is like to be from a country that is in America's crosshairs. Her tenderly perceptive and surprisingly humorous account invites us to see ourselves as we appear to others, making it possible for us to rediscover our many American gifts through the perspective of the outsider. In shattering myths and embracing painful contradictions that are unique to this place,A Beginner's Guide to America is Hakakian's candid love letter to America. 1849 SACRAMENTO CITY

At a time when firefighters were underpaid, disrespected and subject to the whims of their employers, the firefighter union movement asserted itself in the early 1970s with an unprecedented wave of strikes. On this edition of CPF Fire Wire, we present Part One of a two-part episode that tells the story of one of those strikes, and how it was part of a pivotal moment for firefighters and the labor movement. Joining CPF President Brian Rice is Richard Mayberry, longtime president of Sacramento Area Firefighters 522. Mayberry was a relatively new firefighter in October of 1970 when more than 400 Sacramento City firefighters walked off the job. In Part One, Mayberry talks about the conditions firefighters faced at the time, and what drove them to an action that put every firefighter's job on the line.

Today we're joined by Sacramento City Council candidate for District 5, Caity Maple. Maple is perhaps best known as one of the cofounders of Sacramento SOUP, an organization that worked overtime during the pandemic to provide much needed services for unhoused people that the city, county and state weren't making available. We discuss Maple's relationship to homelessness why it's such a big driver in her efforts, and how she landed as a No on Sacramento's Measure O. Caity's got a big struggle ahead. Her opponent, Tamiko Heim, has taken tens of thousands of dollars from the real estate industry, landlords, corporate interests and police unions. Despite bargaining this weekend, there's no new deal as a teacher's strike continues in the Sacramento City Unified School District. That means campuses will remain closed, and that's taking a toll on families. Reporter: Pauline Bartolone, CapRadio Student debt is a crushing financial burden for millions of people, including health professionals who've worked hard treating COVID-19 patients during the pandemic. Now, U.S. Senator Alex Padilla of California has introduced a bill to help get rid of student loans for frontline healthcare workers. Reporter: Farida Jhabvala Romero, KQED Talks aimed at ending a strike by hundreds of unionized workers at Chevron's refinery in the city of Richmond are restarting Monday morning. It's the first bargaining session since the workers walked off the job a week ago over pay, health benefits and worker safety concerns. Reporter: Ted Goldberg, KQED After years of scrutiny and criticism of how the Bakersfield Police Department does its job, an agreement between the department and the California Department of Justice may force the department to make changes. That includes how Bakersfield PD officers respond to calls involving people with mental health issues. Reporter: Soreath Hok, KVPR If you're looking for a house to buy in California, this won't surprise you. Home ownership became even more unreachable for the great majority of Californians last year. SCTA union members have voted to authorize a strike, highlighting their disapproval of the district's latest contract proposal. Today we'll be discussing the launch of the 2022 election cycle, looking at races local to the Sacramento region. As a launching point, we'll talk about Yousef Baig's Sacramento Bee piece on the need for fresh faces on the Sacramento City Council. While we disagree with his ongoing cheerleading for a strong mayor form of government, we do agree that the majority of the current council needs to go. Here are the seats that are up for election this year: District 3 On Monday, January 24, Karina Talamantes threw her hat in the ring for this newly drawn district, currently represented by Councilmember Jeff Harris. A former Bernie supporter, Talamantes has the support of council's two most progressive members. She also, however, is the chief of staff of current conservative Democrat CM Angelique Ashby. Also in the running is Michael Lynch, the executive director of Improve Your Tomorrow, who last election cycle put his weight behind Mayor Darrell Steinberg's "strong mayor" ballot initiative. Oh, and have we mentioned Jeff Harris? He likely would have run again, but his neighborhood of East Sacramento has been drawn into Katie Valenzuela's District 4. Will he move to South Natomas to hold onto his seat? District 5 Originally the most interesting race in the region, this election pits homeless advocate and cannabis advocate Caity Maple against Kendra Macias Reed, a city planning commissioner who runs a construction company. [You can take a look at Maple and Macias Reed's Sac Follows the Money spreadsheets here.] A resident of the Z'Berg Park neighborhood, Macias Reed has been drawn outside of District 5. She told the Bee she'll be moving back into the district soon, but rumors are emerging that she may ultimately not. District 1 With Councilmember Angelique Ashby running for the California State Senate, this seat representing the northern suburbs is also wide open. According to the Sacramento Bee, the following folks are considering a run here: "- Lisa Kaplan, Natomas Unified School Board member since 2002, and an attorney, is running for the seat, she said. - Alyssa Lozano, a realtor and president of the Natomas Chamber of Commerce, is seriously considering a run, said Andrew Acosta, a political consultant. - Basim Elkarra, executive director of The Council on American-Islamic Relations and member of the Twin Rivers Unified School District Board, is considering a run, he said." District 7 Currently running unopposed, Rick Jennings may have an easy ticket to another round on the dais. You may not have heard much about the Hmong experience in California, but Mai Vang is here to change that. Her family was among the hundreds of thousands who fled Laos due to political fallout after the Vietnam War, forced to start a new life in the United States. The oldest of 16 siblings, Mai's first memories involve taking care of her younger brothers and sisters. She's long been community-oriented, which has been a cornerstone to her activism and political trajectory. Mai shares with us what it was like growing up in poverty in Oak Park, how her activism with Hmong Innovating Politics (HIP) led to her tenure as a board member on the Sacramento City Unified School District, and how she hopes her city council run will help enfranchise and empower a Sacramento community that has long felt left out of the public process. Mai has pulled in a number of important endorsements, including the coveted recommendation from the Sacramento Sister Circle (and endorsement from Black Women Organized for Political Action), but this race is not so simple. Her opponent, Pastor Les Simmons, is another longtime activist and community advocate. You don't see it often in politics, but the people of District 8 have a pretty great problem on their hands. Ballots should be hitting mailboxes this week, so read up on your candidates, state propositions and local ballot measures (No on A, Yes on C!).
