Guests: Swimming Australia's Integrity Manager Lydia Scott and Swimming Australia's Complaints and Compliance Manager Scott Elliott Investing in integrity is crucial for the long-term sustainability of sport, but sadly it’s not the subject everyone in sport ‘wants’ to discuss. With more than 90 National Sporting Organisations, National Sporting Organisations for people with Disability and Sport Administration Bodies adopting the National Integrity Framework or working towards the Integrity Policy Standards, sports are looking for new and innovative ways to highlight the importance of integrity in sport within their membership. In November (2024), Swimming Australia launched its inaugural National Integrity Month, using the acronym FISH to spread awareness about its values – Fairness, Integrity, Safety, Happiness. It’s an event the organisation will now hold annually to boost the profile of integrity and the role we all play in protecting sport. Some of the messaging is as simple as providing clubs with information and advice on appropriate photo use of young swimmers. In this episode of On Side, we chat with Swimming Australia’s National Integrity Manager, Lydia Dowse, and Complaints and Compliance Manager, Scott Elliott, to find out more about how they prioritise integrity for the safety of members and the long-term sustainability of their sport.Support the show: https://www.sportintegrity.gov.au/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Really enjoyed this episode with my BJJ instructor Scott Elliot. We discuss various disciplines, their application, and how you can be better prepared in an ever changing world. I can't say enough great things about the community, and the people that Scott has cultivated within our gym, and the career he has built helping lead others to strength and confidence on the mats. I hope you enjoy, and if you do, please share it!

Jeffrey Archer is a bit different from many of my usual guests. He's not at all sentimental, he's very confident – I mean this is a former MP who went to prison for perjury after all – and in many ways that confidence seems impenetrable. But this is, I think, what makes him so interesting to listen to because even Jeffrey Archer is afflicted by self-doubt and even Jeffrey Archer has had to come up with strategies for dealing with it, even if sometimes the strategy is basically just being ferociously productive. Since his first book, Not a Penny More, Not a Penny Less, was rejected by 17 publishers before selling in 1976, he has sold more than 300 million copies of his books worldwide, which makes him one of the top 25 fiction authors of all time.We talk about his incredible self-discipline when it comes to his writing routine, how lots of editors rejected his debut because none of them believed he would write a second book and how he would not have made a good prime minister! I loved talking to Abi Elphinstone, a bestselling children's author who writes about dreamsnatchers and sky gods and wildcats. She has been called a worthy successor to C.S. Lewis by The Times, and talks regularly at schools about her writing process, with great enthusiasm even when the kids mistake her for JK Rowling. I was especially grateful to Abi for fitting me in when she was practically moments from giving birth, and I think that's testament to how she's always keen to chat about her work whenever she can. We actually haven't had an author on Write-Off before talking about rejection at the agent stage specifically but Abi is an extremely good example. She was rejected a grand total of 96 times before she got her first book deal, and she is not afraid to talk about it, once posting some of those rejections online. We talk about what she learnt from all that feedback, how her dyslexia stood her in good stead for years of hard work and mapping out stories before she starts. Chris Paling, a BBC radio producer, had an auspicious start as a writer, accidentally stumbling across a very starry agent with his first attempt at writing a novel. That novel didn't actually sell though, along with several others, and later in his career, after he had been published, Chris began to keep a diary of his musings about the industry. Not originally intended for publication, that diary is in fact now published as A Very Nice Rejection Letter, a lovely, very funny book. Chris is really good on that sort of sixth sense as to whether something is working or not, and we also talked a lot about whether writing is really a dialogue with yourself or something you are desperate for other people to hear. You can find me on Twitter at @francescasteele and Instagram at @Francesca_steeleDon't forget that I list my guests' books at my online shop https://uk.bookshop.org/shop/francescasteele. If you don't already know Sandra Newman, you are going to be hearing a lot about her in the next year or so. Her new book, The Men, about a world in which everyone with a Y chromosome vanishes, is out this June, and she is also currently writing a much anticipated feminist retelling of George Orwell's 1984. Sandra has experienced plenty of failure, notably when her publisher declined to publish the second book in her two book deal, We discuss unlikeable books, and she tells me all about the time she pulled off a remarkable publicity stunt fort her first ever play when she was a creative writing student, only for it to get savaged in the press. When The Girl on the Train came out in 2015 and went straight to number one on global bestseller lists Paula Hawkins was pitched like a debut. But in fact Paula had written several previous novels, romantic comedies, under a pseudonym, the last of which hadn't done well at all, leaving Paula feeling seriously rejected. What I loved about talking to Paula is they even though she is now one of the most famous thriller writers alive, she remains extremely cautious and circumspect, with vivid recollections of how it felt before she was successful and before she started to really love what she was writing, Her latest book, A Slow Fire Burning, is out now and is, I think, her best yet, a really clever mystery with a lot of subverted tropes and jokes about book writing. We talk too about not being able to give publishers what they want, the horror of bad reviews - yep, she had them - and the book that The Girl on the Train very nearly was until another author wrote it.You can find me on Twitter at @francescasteele and Instagram at @Francesca_steeleDon't forget that I list my guests' books at my online shop https://uk.bookshop.org/shop/francescasteele. I find this interview so inspiring. Matt Cain is a successful arts journalist and at the time of his first book submission he was Culture Editor for Channel 4, praised in particular for his coverage of the Woman's Prize for Fiction. But 2010, the semi-autobiographical book Matt had been working on about a child growing up -like himself - gay in the north of England - was rejected in part for being what he says were coded ways of saying it was “too gay”. Matt's book was put up for submission three times over the next decade and rejected by more than 50 agents and editors. Matt didn't give up though and today that book is published as the wonderful The Madonna of Bolton with the crowdfunding publisher Unbound. We talk about how he really tried to learn from the feedback on early submissions, how creative rejection changed him - almost more than homophobic bullying did - and how his therapist made it into his book.Don't forget that I list my guest's books at my online shop https://uk.bookshop.org/shop/francescasteele. Welcome back! Clare Chambers is kicking off this season. Clare has written nine published novels - her first when she was just 26 and her latest, Small Pleasures, a wonderful book long-listed for the Woman's Prize last year. But just before Small Pleasures there was a failed novel that nearly caused Clare to give up on writing altogether. It took her five years to write and then no one wanted to buy it.We talked about her feeling her career was over aged 50, working as an editor herself for the legendary publisher Diana Athill, how she switched from being a pantser to being a committed plotter and being given permission not to be funny. Tariq Trotter, best known in music as Black Thought, the emcee of the Roots, is regarded by many hip-hop fans as one of the best freestyle rappers ever. His work changed shape when the Roots became the house band for Jimmy Fallon's late-night show, and again when he began performing standup comedy. “I've spent most of my career with my sunglasses and my hat pulled down low, very many layers of defense,” he tells Jelani Cobb. “You're up there as a comedian, it's just you and your ideas and a microphone, no light show, no band. . . . After having done this for over thirty years, what else can I do, how can I become a better storyteller?” Trotter's latest endeavor has been writing the music and lyrics for “Black No More,” a musical-theatre production based on the eponymous novel, by George Schuyler; the script is by John Ridley, with direction by Scott Elliott. Schuyler's book is a dark satire, written during the Harlem Renaissance, that describes the development of a “cure” for Blackness; Trotter stars as Dr. Junius Crookman, who believes that this remedy will solve America's problems with race. “My focus became almost rapping as little as possible” in the show, Trotter says; “I wanted this to be above and beyond folks' expectations.” “Black No More” is in previews at the Pershing Square Signature Center. It opens February 15th.

Andy Weir is best known for his novel The Martian, a very clever and funny book about an astronaut stranded on Mars, which was made into a (2015) Ridley Scott film starring Matt Damon. Andy had two failed novels behind him before he self-published The Martian and even when it became an e-book bestseller didn't think to find an agent because earlier attempts had left him feeling like he wasn't good enough. (An agent an traditional publisher later approached him.) We talk about Andy's struggle with rejection and about his new (third published) book, Project Hail Mary, which is also a very funny and inventive space mission story. Anna Hope has written three very successful novels, the last of which, Expectation, was published to much fanfare in 2019 and which has been optioned for film. But before that Anna experienced plenty of rejection as an actor, and then when she turned to writing her first novel failed to sell. Anna was such a joy to speak to and she felt like the perfect first guest for Write-Off, talking openly and honestly about quite how difficult that experience was and how she got through it to become the hugely successful novelist she is today. Anna's novels are Wake, The Ballroom and Expectation and you can find them in all good bookshops as well as my own online bookstore link: https://uk.bookshop.org/shop/francescasteelMany thanks to Scott Elliott for his invaluable podcast advice, and to Robin Stannard for my lovely Write-Off logo. In the social profit sector, trust is the biggest thing that mediates relationships between boards and leadership teams, but it's not always easy to measure. At the Dr. Peter AIDS Foundation, Scott Elliott believes that the starting point for trust building is authenticity and integrity. Even in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, Scott and his team of silent warriors are waging a softer fight against an older pandemic and the larger social issues that have always gone along with it. Joining Douglas Nelson on the show, he shares some of the challenges of leadership and maintaining board relationships at a time when everyone in the sector is forced to do a lot of things differently.
Terence Faherty is the author of the Scott Elliott and Owen Keane series. Welcome to Episode 9 of School PR Drive Time! In this show from November 16, 2020, co-hosts Kevin Smith (Transylvania County Schools) and Ellen Boyd (Executive Director, NCSPRA) enjoy a conversation uniting friends and colleagues around a topic that brought them together 20 years ago. Superintendent Scott Elliott of Watauga County Schools and Susan Allred, author and consultant with 45 years of educational experience in NC, SC, and KY, crossed paths as Scott was first becoming an administrator in the 1990s. What they have each learned over the intervening years about the art and science of Continuous Improvement is the subject of this episode. From learning about systems thinking (PDSA, similar to the RPIE model for PR best practices) they also explore how strong relationships with students build capacity and raise the bar for excellence. They describe the process of overcoming fear, and acquiring the boldness required by leaders to take risks for the sake of growth. All important topics for every stakeholder in our public schools! Lots of information has come out in the past few days about the return to in-person instruction for public schools in the State of North Carolina. This week's podcast will explain what Governor Roy Cooper's announcement Thursday means for schools across the State, but most importantly, what the local impact of this decision means for Watauga County Schools.Dr. Scott Elliott, Superintendant of Watauga County Schools lays out the proposed plan for a return to in-person instruction locally and previews the special called meeting of the Watauga County Board of Education for Monday, September 21st, that could see action taken on these plans.

On Tuesday, North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper announced the plans for a return to school for the State's Public Schools. Dr. Scott Elliott, Superintendent of Watauga County Schools, details what that return to the classroom looks like in our area, and discusses how faculty, staff, administrators, parents, and students can play a part in a safe return to school.
This week's Keep Boone Healthy Podcast features Dr. Scott Elliott, Superintendant of Watauga County Schools. After schools closed March 14th due to the COVID-19 pandemic, our local school system quickly deployed assets, rearranged roles and responsibilities, and began distributing meals to children and delivering remote instruction in a very short time. What lessons were learned? What advantages helped Watauga County Schools deploy technology to students so quickly? How did students respond academically? When will plans be finalized for the Fall of 2020? These are all questions we posed to Dr. Elliott, as he shined a light on a very unique close to the semester for Watauga County Schools, but a close that also brought some of the very best in ingenuity and teamwork to the forefront. We also discuss the continued local response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the recent conversations in our community regarding racial and social injustice, and we talk about how businesses can see through the economic pressures of today to replenish their reserves in the event there is more business disruption down the road.
I first saw Scott Elliott on SMB Capitals Youtube. Mike Bellafiore brought him on to discuss his recent blow-up of 100k on one trade. All of his hard work for months was wiped away in one trade. He was very open with Mike and shared his story with him which I felt took a strong person to do so. I knew I wanted to bring him on B The Trader right away to dive deeper into his story and learn even more lessons from his trade. I feel we can all learn from this episode and I can't wait for you to watch it.

If you've taught a humanities class, you've probably recognized how frequently Adolf Hitler comes up. Unfortunately, many kid's understanding of Hitler and Fascism doesn't expand much past the Holocaust.Scott Elliott teaches 9th Grade World History with me. Right before Christmas Break, we were yakking about how we could teach Fascism, our first unit in January, in a more engaging and impactful way. Scott found a wonderful resource which formed the backbone of the assignment. The article is by Laurence W. Britt and is entitled Fascism Anyone. The assignment we created challenged kids to rate WWII leaders on the 14 Characteristics Britt articulates and also to apply them to current leaders with authoritarian traits. Please give a listen and if you like what you hear, migrate to my show notes for outstanding links.

What happened to commercial Off Broadway. Why you can’t be afraid of “no” when you’re raising money. Thinking about starting a theater company? Here’s his shocking opinion.
