Whether New Year lover or hater, the science behind the year's most significant self-improvement day is pretty darn fascinating. In today's episode of The Change Lab, Dr. Sasha Heinz dives into the research on the Fresh Start Effect, the human tendency to set and pursue goals or make positive changes at the beginning of a date that gives us a psychological feeling of “before & after.” In this episode, you will learn the three reasons why a fresh start is an ideal time to initiate change and why, when you're already doing a bang up job checking the box on your daily habits, it's wise to ignore those fresh start dates. Tune in to see how a fresh start can help you transcend the daily grind and reach toward your biggest goals. The majority (roughly 80%) of people do not currently have a clinical psychological problem. In other words, they are not struggling with navigating life on a daily basis due to disease, disorder or dysfunction, but rather they are actually suffering from developmental stagnation. And simply being “more positive” is not the answer. To discuss what this means and how it impacts the world of coaching, I interviewed Sasha Heinz, Ph.D., MAPP. Dr. Heinz is a Developmental Psychologist and Coach, and an expert in Positive Psychology, adult development, and transformational change. She shared how “toxic positivity” actually hinders lasting change, and some powerful ways we can elevate our coaching through developmental support. “The way that you conceptualize the world isn't sophisticated enough for the problems you're facing. Right? So this is what most people are actually struggling with. And, to me, seeing it in that way is so hopeful, so expansive.” – Dr. Sasha Heinz What You'll Learn Arrested development Present and future versus past Toxic positivity Commitment to reality Training the elephant Fierce self-compassion Contact Info and Recommended Resources Join Molly Claire and Kris Jones for a collaboration webinar, The Powerhouse Program: Craft a Killer Program and a Sales Page That Converts on Monday, December 4, 2023 at 12:00 Central Time. Today in The Change Lab we're talking about the power of metaphors. The figures of speech we use to describe the mind inform how we relate to it and work with it. If you think of your mind as a garden, then your job is to be a gardener. If you think of the mind as a computer, then your job is to update the software. If you think of your mind as a conference room full of competing committee members, then your job is to mediate the conflict. Metaphors are powerful. And in this episode, Dr. Heinz will share the metaphor she uses to illustrate the inner tension between our reason and our emotions: The elephant and the rider. You'll never think about your mind in quite the same way.Enter to win a free 75-minute private coaching session with Dr. Sasha Heinz! For more, follow Dr. Heinz on Instagram, or visit drsashaheinz.com/podcastProduced by Peoples Media Hosted on Acast. Welcome to the very first episode of The Change Lab with Dr. Sasha Heinz. Why the heck do we stop paying attention to human development when we hit our quarter-life milestone? It's a great question! In this episode, Sasha discusses how growing up isn't just for kids and why it's important to lean into your growth edge in adulthood if your goal is to like yourself and like the life you're creating. Many of the challenges we face as adults–people-pleasing, perfectionism, procrastination, and compare and despair–are not necessarily invitations to analyze our childhood, but invitations to mature. Join Sasha on this journey as she clears space for the science of transformational change and adult development in the loosey goosey world of life coaching and self-help.Show Notes:https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s10902-020-00274-0For more, you can follow @drsashaheinz on Instagram, or visit https://drsashaheinz.com Production by Peoples MediaProduction by Peoples Media Hosted on Acast. Why do women feel like we have to do it all? I've always prided myself in keeping all the balls in the air at once. And I've tried to perfect doing it all– often without even flinching. But because of this, I'm burnt out. And the mental exhaustion is real. So why is it that we feel like we have to wear so many hats to be recognized as successful women– whether it's in a career, family life, marriage, or all of the above? I know I'm not the only one working overtime, all the time. I carry the bulk of the household and caregiving responsibilities, on top of all my career work– every single day. And the stats across the board back it up– women have higher rates of depression, anxiety, and autoimmunity. Our bodies as women take a beating, but we've been convinced to put others' needs before our own. To change this mindset and help us recognize we don't need to be perfect at everything, I've invited expert Elise Loehnen on the show. She's here to explain how these impulses– often described as unselfish and distinctly feminine instincts– have actually been ingrained in us by society for a long time. Elise helps us understand our innate need to be perfect as an aspect of being a woman and allows us to recognize how to adapt when we feel this need to do it all. Elise recently wrote a book called On Our Best Behavior: The Seven Deadly Sins and the Price Women Pay to be Good. And if you've ever struggled with self-sacrifice, or feeling the need to be good, this book is for you. Today's podcast is one you won't want to miss because Elise does a deep dive into the history of women's behavior– all the way up to the modern day, and discusses how society has created ideas in our brains of who and what we have to be. It's time to break this mold and live the way we as women deserve to. To feel empowered, patient with ourselves, and perfectly imperfect. So listen now to gain thoughtful insight and become the best version of yourself! Elise Loehnen Elise Loehnen is a writer, editor, and host of the podcast Pulling the Thread, where she interviews cultural luminaries about the big questions of today. She's the author of the New York Times bestselling book– On Our Best Behavior: The Seven Deadly Sins and the Price Women Pay to be Good. Elise has also co-written 12 books, including five New York Times Best Sellers. Previously, she was the chief content officer of Goop. While there, Elise co-hosted The Goop Podcast and The Goop Lab on Netflix, and she's interviewed hundreds of thought leaders, doctors, and experts. IN THIS EPISODE Elise's story and her exploration of women's need to be good The impact perfectionistic tendencies have on women Discussing gender constructs throughout history How the “Good Girl” mentality permeated into society The connection between the seven deadly sins and our behavior Discussing envy and what it can tell us Getting clear on our own wants and needs How self-denial can be detrimental RESOURCES MENTIONED Order On Our Best Behavior by Elise Loehnen Now! You read that right! Too often we thing when we struggle, have stress and anxiety, there is something WRONG with us! That we might have a mental illness…but what if it was actually something else entirely? Dr. Sasha Heinz is not only BRILLIANT, she will help you see things in a completely different way! We start out by talking about self-compassion, but we quickly turn into a conversation like I've never had before. I'll be forever changed from it. Dr. Heinz talks about how we, as women, as moms, are socialized to prioritize other's needs - ok, nothing new here…but she goes on to talk about how when we feel threatened, we revert back to our survival instincts of fight or flight BUT women, move into “tend and befriend”. It's a completely different way of responding to stress than men. Here's the best part! We can evolve past this! We are just stuck in a developmental stage as adults and with some internal work, we can be free of these disempowering behaviors! We can become people who consider others' opinions but aren't ruled by them. There is so much more in this episode I know you'll love! I could have talked to her for hours! Savourez ! Sandra ************ Welcome to Les Equilibristes, a podcast about what it means to lead a full life, juggling with kids, work, and all the other parts of our lives that make them worthwhile and fun. My name is Sandra Fillaudeau, I am your host. Les Equilibristes is a French expression, meaning “tightrope walkers”, and is a way of expressing this idea I care deeply about as a working and ambitious parent of two young kids: always moving forward, testing, learning, falling and getting back up. Movement is how we find a sense of balance. I am on a mission to reconsider the way we think of work-life balance, and constantly looking for a more accurate way of coining a topic I have been passionate about ever since my son was born in 2014, and my work responsibilities increased at the same time. These discussions span many topics, from the most intimate, to company and public policies. My guests are women, men, experts and leaders – they all have a role to play in the way we lead full, enriching lives. A year ago, I launched Conscious Cultures, a consulting firm that helps companies better understand their talents' needs to tailor a more suited and inclusive experience for them. We are here to explore, together, and I would love to hear from you: feel free to email me with suggestions, comments, ideas at sandra@conscious-cultures.com. You can also check out my Instagram and LinkedIn accounts and stay in touch there. Now let's talk about today's episode: Today's guest is Nicole Whiting, a master life and movement coach known to her clients as the “life pacer.” A serial entrepreneur, mother of two, Ironwoman, and competitive ultrarunner—she's as fierce a leader as they come. I was lucky enough to have been coached by her, as part of Sasha Heinz's beautiful group coaching program. Nicole has a way of finding words, metaphors, that resonate deeply. This episode is full of them. We talked about living life fully, in color rather than in black in white, about how ultrarunning has been the vehicle for the most profound learning in her life. We talked a lot about exploring, and curiosity, what it means to have our own backs, what it looks like to show up with self-compassion. And maybe most importantly, we talked about our need for human connection. I am grateful she took the time to share her experience and thrilled to be sharing our conversation. I'm sure you'll find many ideas to nurture. Enjoy! ********************** Merci de faire une place aux Équilibristes dans votre vie

For some women the true struggle with burnout stems from the knowledge that they put themselves in that position. That's how Dr. Sasha Heinz felt. She had pushed so hard for so long that when she realized she was completely depleted and had no one but herself to blame, it felt like a sticking point for moving forward. Which is when she started to realize that her sticking point was an area of work that she needed to tackle. After finally reaching the pinnacle and receiving her doctorate but not feeling the joy that should have come with it, she started her burnout work. Her goal was always to become a coach. Helping other people make impactful change in their lives was extremely important to her. So she began to do her own work and it has made her an even stronger coach. Listen as she shares her story and how she continues to approach and battle burnout. There's a reason we have to go through our struggles. Just remember to take a step back once you're through and see what there was to learn. “There is so much power in witnessing other people's experiences so that you recognize everyone has the same affliction and that is that we have a human brain and there is nothing wrong with you.” Dr. Sasha Heinz In this episode: [01:50] Welcome to the show, Dr. Sasha Heinz! [02:00] Dr. Heinz shares what she brings to the world. [03:06] People learn more from watching other people get coached than they do when they are being coached themselves. [04:35] Her experience with burnout and what it felt like to her. [07:15] You can stop at any point, but we tell ourselves there is no backing out. [09:38] How she felt when she got her Ph.D. [12:41] She always wanted to be a coach from day one. [18:01] Going through the struggle forces you to come face to face with the fact that you need to recognize your work is the relationship you have with yourself. On today's episode, we talk about people pleasing “...but my priority is my family right now. I don't have the time to do this work right now or to participate.” We did a survey few months ago and asked our community members what is holding them back from doing the “work” meaning healing their relationship to food & body. People pleasing came in the top 3... specifically #2 . These are the women who knew they had people pleasing behaviors. The funny thing is that the #1 reason holding back women from healing their relationship to food and body was: “I need to lose weight. I can't bear being in this body right now. Got to fix that first before doing mindset work”. I say funny because that #1 reason is: people pleasing “in hiding”. So people pleasing is a huge theme in our community! That's what we are going to deep dive on this episode. Our guest today is Sasha Heinz, PhD and a developmental psychologist. She is an expert in positive psychology, lasting behavioral change, and the science of getting unstuck. She's a working mom, she's lived life on the front line of the battle with perfectionism. So, she is going to help us with that. What you'll learn listening to this episode: What is the disease of people pleasing? How does it manifest in our life? Why does it affect women more than men? How to learn to say no? How to let go of the opinion of others? Mentioned on the show: FREE Intuitive Eating Guide Intuitive Eating Project Connect with our guest Website Instagram Goop Article
