Progress with the kittens, Laverne & Shirley! Last night Lori was up with them, and they jumped up onto the couch with her in search of some affection. Lasted a little while and then the girls wanted to play. I just got them a stick with a string and feathers at the end and both Laverne & Shirley were playing with it as Lori got them actively playing to tire them out…as much as one can tire out seven moth old kittens! Just got some more back story on our new kittens. The were born as feral from a feral mom.  The people whose home they were born in are too elderly to care for the kittens. The daughter of the family where Laverne & Shirley were born told us the birth mom cat left them after three months and her family took them in, but their cat wanted nothing to do with the kittens. We have work to do, don't we?  The Music Authority Podcast... listen, like, comment, download, share, repeat…heard daily on Podchaser, Deezer, Amazon Music, Audible, Listen Notes, Mixcloud, Player FM, Tune In, Podcast Addict, Cast Box, Radio Public, Pocket Cast, APPLE iTunes, and direct for the source distribution site: *Podcast - https://themusicauthority.transistor.fm/  AND NOW there is a website! This week's podcast is a listener's pick and boy are we grateful to have it be Shake Some Action by the Flamin' Groovies.  Shake Some Action   is nothing short of a power pop masterpiece. With its British Invasion vibe, it's hard to believe it came from 1976. There a bunch of great covers, including one that goes back to 1914.  But it's the  originals where the band shines. The songs are full of hooks and great harmonies, that will make you want to dance or sing a long at the the top of your lungs while you're driving down the road. The title track is power pop royalty. The Flamin' Groovies are a remarkable band that are critics darlings, but for some reason mostly unheard by the record-buying public. Join us as we dig into the story of the band, and duscuss this remarkable set of songs, on one of the best albums of 70s.

This week, we celebrate the beginning of the '90s (Or was it the end of the '80s? You be the judge.) When MC Hammer, Vanilla Ice and Wilson Phillips ruled the airwaves. When Uncle Gregg found some direction and joined the Navy. When teenage Brett co-founded his first band, Empty Glass. And when our special guest, power pop legend Jamie Hoover was caught in a flurry of activity, releasing his debut solo album Coupons, Questions And Comments and prepping for The Spongetones' 1991 third full length, Oh Yeah! Formed in 1979 and very much influenced by the British Invasion, Charlotte, North Carolina's The Spongetones carried on the musical genre through acclaimed original songwriting, jangle pop riffs, and lilting, Beatlesque vocals. In his 2007 authoritative book Shake Some Action, John M. Borack rated The Spongetones' Beat And Torn (a CD containing 1982's Beat Music LP - one of Brett's all time favorites - and 1984's Torn Apart mini-LP) at #24 of his Top 200 Power Pop Albums of all time. The band features the triple threat of talented singers and songwriters: Jamie Hoover, Pat Walters and Steve Stoeckel. In addition to The Spongetones, Jamie has shared the stage and recorded with Don Dixon and Marti Jones, The Smithereens, Graham Parker, Hootie & The Blowfish, Bill Lloyd, Emitt Rhodes, and Ray Paul, among others. Hoover either produced or co-produced all the Spongetones' albums, and continues to produce a wide variety of other musicians, recently including '60s singer/songwriter Bob Lind ('Elusive Butterfly') and young prodigy Elena Rogers. Udtrykket 'power pop' blev opfundet af The Who's Pete Townshend i 1967, da han overfor en journalist skulle beskrive deres musikstil. He lives in Orange County, California with his wife, two children, two dogs and a constantly growing LP and CD collection. David Bash is the founder and CEO of the International Pop Overthrow Music Festival, which is held annually in 13-16 cities around the world, including Los Angeles, San Francisco, Portland, Seattle, Phoenix, Chicago, Nashville, Atlanta, Austin, Boston, New York, Philadelphia, Arlington, Toronto, Vancouver BC, Stockholm Sweden, and Liverpool UK (at The Cavern Club). The festival is dedicated to bring classic pop music to the public. Although the festival has over the years featured several major label acts, such as Phantom Planet, Maroon 5 (under their previous incarnation, Kara's Flowers), and The Click Five, Bash tries to maintain the grassroots feel of the festival by featuring primarily unsigned bands, and presenting them in a festival platform with similar minded artists, where they will be appreciated by both the festival audiences and by each other. Bash personally selects all the artists. Each year, Bash produces a CD compilation on the Omnivore label featuring bands that have played in any of the cities in which the festival has appeared.

Since the early 1980's, there have been several vision training programs developed which propose to improve the vision of athletes resulting in an associated improvement in their sports performance. Do these training programs actually work?  Or could practice time be put to better use?  In this episode, I review the research that has evaluated the effectiveness of these programs.   Links to articles mentioned in podcast: Do generalized visual training programmes for sport really work? Sports talk is littered with phrases related to our eyes.  We talk of great court vision, a good eye at the plate  and seeing the ball well.  But just how critical is vision to an athlete?Do professional athletes see better than we do?  Can you play sports effectively if you have poorer than 20/20 vision? In this episode I dive into the topic of research in vision in sports. Steve from Retro Man Blog and Rock Photographer Paul Slattery welcome Chris Wilson, singer, songwriter and guitarist with the legendary, and recently re-formed, Flamin' Groovies. Chris takes us on a journey from his early teens watching and being inspired by some of the great Blues musicians in Massachusetts to LA and San Francisco where he joined up with ex-Charlatans guitarist Mike Wilhelm in Loose Gravel and later The Flamin' Groovies. Responsible for some of the most iconic rock classics ever recorded such as "Slow Death" and "Shake Some Action" The Flamin' Groovies never quite made the breakthrough to commercial success, but remain a huge influence on Power Pop and Punk bands alike. Chris also covers his time with The Barracudas, recording with Dave Edmunds, meeting Ringo Starr and not to mention seeing photographer Paul Slattery again for the first time in 35 years! In this candid and amusing story, Chris also picks out some of his influences, favourite songs and highlights from his own back catalogue including his excellent brand new album "It's Flamin' Groovy!"
