Over the past few decades there has been a highly significant shift in the involvement of women within the criminal justice system, particularly Black Women. Reasons are inclusive of extensive law enforcement efforts, harsher drug sentencing laws, and post-conviction limitations to reentry that uniquely affect women. The numbers are alarming, as the female incarcerated population stands over seven times higher than in 1980. Shara and Shekina is joined by Jasmine Young, a former incarcerated woman and founder of Inmates R Us, to talk about (1). what it is like being a Black Woman in prison and (2) what life is like 10 months after her release.  Jasmine is on a mission to help other women and girls not make the same mistakes she has made; as well as, provide support to current incarcerated women and their families. Twenty years after visiting as Minister for Arts, President Higgins returned to Shekina Garden in Glenmalure. President Higgins was Minister for the Arts, Culture and the Gaeltacht when Catherine McCann gifted the Shekina Garden to the State, a transfer which the President (then Minister) formalised on the occasion of a visit to Shekina in 1997.
