Children in America have been largely boxed out from politics. They have missed out on that sense of political agency that our culture affords to adults. It’s not that they don’t care; they aren’t in a state of apathy but are experiencing disconnect. How can we empower our kids to shift from a passive acceptance of politics to active navigation of it? Lauren Duca is an award-winning journalist who speaks out on this very topic. She used to work at Teen Vogue and is the author of the book How to Start a Revolution: Young People and the Future of American Politics. Lauren has become a voice for young people--young women in particular. She spoke at my conference last year on the political awakening she had when Trump was elected in 2016. She also taught how we can raise conscious citizens who have political agency. It was an amazing talk that everyone at the conference loved, so I am sharing it with all of you today. Show Highlights: What a political awakening is. The research Lauren did to uncover the political convictions of American youth. Why a sense of agency is more important than knowledge. How to create a sense of agency for our kids. How to go on a media diet. Becoming an expert on one topic that interests you. The foundation of forming a political opinion. Different ways to raise your voice. How to navigate conversations with those who disagree with you. How to make democracy a daily habit in your life. Over the summer, I posted a Twitter thread about recovering from purity culture. I wasn’t specifically addressing the parenting audience, but it easily applies and is very important to the parenting conversation. Just like how the sex talk should not be a one-time conversation with our kids, recovery requires ongoing conversations. So, for our last episode in this January series on sex, sexuality, and purity culture, I wanted to bring back the episode where I expanded upon that Twitter thread. There are so many prerequisites for recovery before a good, healthy sex talk can happen. These are the very issues I’m delving into today. If you were raised in purity culture or simply want to learn from the perspective of those who were, tune in. You’ll hear a thorough discussion on the fears and confusion from which those of us recovering from purity culture must be healed in order to be the best parents we can be. Show Highlights: What boundaries are and how to develop and stick to them. How to raise kids to know what they like and don’t like. The importance of enjoying pleasure for its own sake. The fear tactic of the slippery slope. Discerning the difference between privacy and secrecy. Moving beyond literal thinking into nuanced thinking. Show Summary: Molds are a fungus that feeds off of organic material, and it can make you sick. Its existence in the household makes it dangerous for human health, especially if people are unaware of what it does to our immune system. Sadly, eighty percent of American families have toxic mold problems that affect the occupants' health. It doesn't exempt dry areas when there is a leaky pipe, water damage, or drainage issues. Itchy throat, cough, or runny nose that doesn't go away are toxic molds' symptoms. It also has psychological effects like headaches, brain fog, fatigue, depression, nausea, and in some cases, even hallucinations; if it's bad enough. To get rid of it, listen to Ryan Blaser, the owner of Test My Home, a company aiming to create healthy, toxic-free work and home environments through mold remediation. Find out what other recommendations he has to prevent molds from spreading to your house.Important LinksGutsy Health WebsiteProvo Health InstagramTest My HomeTest My Home Facebook Test My Home Instagram3 Exceptional Highlights:The reason that it's toxic is that mold is fighting for its territory. They're not necessarily doing that to harm humans, but they're trying to fight off the other mold species that are in the area.Proper mold remediation, according to the standards, is removing the mold physically. So either sanding, if it's in a porous material, it needs to be thrown away. Our number one goal is to build a healthy home and to have mold-free, toxin-free. And let's take our time, let's do it right. So a tiger might be more dangerous than a bunny. How do you know if you have a mold problem?Ryan 11:31There are a couple of things you can do. Mold needs water to grow. One of the first things you can do is look for water leaks. If you had a water leak, do you currently have any water spots or water damage? Are there certain materials or ways you can build to minimize your risk of mold?Ryan 22:28Using magnesium boards instead of drywall, it doesn't have the paper on it. There's nothing for the mold to grow on and it's breathable. Can we use bleach on it or paint over it?Ryan 28:05It’s the worst thing you can put on mold. It actually makes it worse for two reasons:Bleach is 90% water or one, It doesn't kill it right away. Have you struggled with relationships that were bad for you? Maybe you’ve been in a toxic relationship with somebody who was always manipulating you into ways of getting what they wanted, leaving you feeling like a doormat. Maybe you had friends who treated you badly or would pressure you into going along with jokes at your expense or doing things that made you uncomfortable or went against your values. Or perhaps you’ve had family members who would leverage guilt or reciprocity to make you do whatever they want, even if it’s a huge inconvenience to you or emotionally draining or even damaging. Or you were constantly being made to feel as though your interests, desires or wants were unimportant or inconvenient… even if it’s simply “don’t treat me like sh*t.” One of the most important things you can do to ensure you have strong, healthy relationships — with your wife or girlfriend, your friends, your family or even your co-workers — is to have strong boundaries. Today, I'm going to teach you how to build strong boundaries... and how to enforce them. SHOW HIGHLIGHTS: What one viral video teaches us about toxic relationships Why abusers and toxic people prey on people with weak boundaries How abusers trick you into lowering your boundaries for them How to push back when people push against your boundaries The most important part of maintaining healthy relationships ...and so much more RELATED LINKS: What Will You Put Up With? Resistance is spiritual. However, what’s spiritual is spiritual too. That’s why I brought on someone whose career vocation it is to invest in the spirituality of children. Katey Hage is the children’s pastor of Quest Church, a diverse church in Seattle founded by my friend Eugene Cho. Katey and I have vocational passions that intersect. Having grown up in a predominately white Christian church environment, when she first experienced God in diverse communities, something shifted inside of her. She was deeply drawn to the image of the multi-cultural Kingdom of God. Today, Katey and I are talking all things kids, ministry, and spirituality. Tune in to hear her origin story and how she gives the children she ministers to spiritual agency. Show Highlights: What made Katey want to become a children’s pastor. How she has wrestled with feeling subversive in her role. How she defines healthy spirituality. Why spontaneous authentic spirituality is better. Advice for religious people who want to honor their children’s spiritual agency and quest. How to raise your kids with healthy spirituality when you have religious triggers. The most important issues facing children’s ministry today. How the church can do better at respecting kids and treating them as fully human. The new curriculum they’re developing at Quest. Rejection hurts... but the fear of rejection can often hurt even worse. In fact, when we give into the fear of rejection, we often set up a pattern that can affect us throughout our lives. When that happens, it becomes a way that we almost give up our free will; life becomes a series of steps that you take to try to AVOID feeling the discomfort and pain of rejection. Recently, I posted a Twitter thread about recovering from purity culture. I wasn’t specifically addressing the parenting audience, but it easily applies and is very important to the parenting conversation. Just like how the sex talk should not be a one-time conversation with our kids, recovery requires ongoing conversations. So, I wanted to expand upon my Twitter thread here on the podcast. What's Your Story: How Leaders Tell Stories to Influence and Connect with Audiences
As we focus on a pandemic around the world, we are all searching for information and for answers. On a personal level, we’re relying on our government and our media to share what’s happening. It’s an unprecedented topic and a new normal in our homes, schools and our lives. But we also wonder about our professional lives. And companies have to interpret the impact of that new normal for employees. In most companies, that calls up the communications and human resources teams to activate or develop a crisis communication plan. SW&A hosted a special panel with some of our colleagues and friends, who know how to manage crisis communications. You’ll hear insights and best practices on what employees and customers need and want during trying times. It takes clarity in ambiguity, confidence in uncertainty and some guidance and advice from those who’ve been there a time or two. Panel: Patti Wilmot: former HR Leader - Patti has over twenty years’ experience as a former-chief human resources officer. She has helped create award-winning leadership development programs focused on creating a “bench” of future leaders. She brings expertise in assessing talent, improving the effectiveness of leadership teams and helping leaders leverage their strengths to improve effectiveness and impact. Steve Soltis: former Executive Communications Leader - Steve is a senior adviser with MAS Leadership Communication. Soltis recently retired from The Coca-Cola Company, where he led both executive and internal communication for the past 11 years. In his role at Coca-Cola, Soltis was responsible for orchestrating the company's entire C-suite executive visibility efforts and for formulating its employee communication strategies and execution. Francie Schulwolf: Former Communications Leader at InterContinental Hotel Group - Francie’s focus is on developing strong, confident communicators. With close to twenty-five years of global, corporate experience in advertising, marketing and communications, she is intimately familiar with the demands executives face. This understanding, along with her honest and warm style, create a safe and comfortable environment for individuals to learn and grow. Sally Williamson: Founder of SW&A - Sally is a leading resource for improving the impact of spoken communications. She has developed key messages and coached leaders and their teams to deliver them effectively for more than thirty years. Sally specializes in executive coaching and developing custom programs for groups across company verticals. Show Highlights: What is the picture of success? What do you want to achieve through this situation? How can businesses leverage this situation? How to win hearts and minds. What is your central message and who are your stakeholders? Know how your employees are doing, understand what your consumers are needing to hear. Timing is critical and consistency is key. Address compensation as best as possible for employees. Be honest with your messaging, if you don’t know the answer let employees know. You can be just as clear about what you know and what you don’t know. Always show unity with leadership and re-enforce it in your messaging. Figure out who are your best messengers who can clearly communicate. Be in constant contact with your employees. Come out with messaging that connects with your brand and your culture. How to construct a plan that shows a picture of success - do this through employee engagement and build off of that. How do you help a group think about clarity and how to understand it? How do leaders deliver this messaging to their teams? There needs to be a means to get the message to them, let employees know how it will get to them and be consistent. Front line people managers are incredibly important during this time, this is the time to step up and this is the time to reach out to employees. Contact each individual employee frequently and know what is going on with your employees. Even if you don’t have something to say to employees, still have that touch point to contact them frequently. Employee care is incredibly important. Keep morale up. Make sure your employees hear about what you are doing before the public knows. Get senior leadership out, touching base with employees personally. Learn to develop manager talking points from leadership. What companies are doing a good job with communicating their message through the crisis? Clarity of truth is important. Not all companies can give good news. This is the moment that will define your leadership. It’s overwhelming as a leader right now, leaders need to be the calming force and utilize empathy. Leaders need to be able to send information both ways, up to higher leadership and down to employees. Don’t let a world wide crisis become your crisis, do everything with kindness and with accurate information. Ask people how they are and if they know what they are supposed to be doing during this time. How we treat our team members now will come back to us.

How do we help balance the desire for our kids to know the truth and yet also wanting to shield them from the pain and horrors embedded in history? Dimitry Anselme from Facing History opens this episode’s conversation with an interesting provocation that youth enter the conversation about history through moral and ethical terms. It is how we engage them in learning and help them locate themselves within the stories. When we start with, “Your ideas matter, your culture matters, whatever you are bringing into the classroom matters, and instead of trying to erase or assimilate it, we will build upon it,” then we have them engaged. Dimitry’s own history of growing up in Kinshasa, where the teaching style was to see the teacher as a beacon of all knowledge and it was disrespectful to ask a question, to building a community of students around him now asking the tough questions is a beautiful journey we explore in today’s episode. Our democracy is fragile and if we wish to protect it, we need to continue to nurture the critical thinking of our students. Show Highlights: What is Facing History and Ourselves and their mission Dimitry’s personal story for how he came to this work from teaching and could not find resources as a young Black teacher on how to help his students think critically and their place in history Expanding from Holocaust to emergence of racist thinking, the eugenics movement and race membership, Civil Rights movement and the Reconstruction Era Social Emotional Learning – more kids are now able to identify racism, homophobia, and are attuned to it happening Pedogogy of the Oppressed – valuing what you think. Your questions are valid is incredibly affirming. Practices we can adopt to become better teachers and the mindset shift to create lifelong learners which can be tough when emphasis is on numbers and grades and passing a test How do we bring equity in more fragile communities? Do the students feel like they are rightful contributors of society? Resources varying from one school to another - Brown vs. Brown was not about segregation and integration, it was about equal access to resources, textbooks, etc. The idea is it is always a march towards progress – teaching history is really teaching how we’ve taken five steps forward, 2 steps back Re-dedicating yourself to the mission of building the society you hope to have Navigating organizational change over time. What is the rationale for changing something that is going well? Why do we want to work at a particular scale? Diffusion of Innovation Curve. Slowing down and letting early adopters teach you and get it right so that it is easier to get to the late adopters because concerns and tests have been addressed prior. The scaling plan of Facing History developed during two Skid Row Schools to now 100,000 educators Willingness and tolerance for failure and changing the culture for this Building tolerance for “I don’t know if this is going to work” You can build up a system where you will know fast if it is not working In leadership, imagining who will be and where we will be in 20-30 years requires steady discipline Links: Facinghistory.org Diffusion of Innovation Curve

Perinatal mental health is the focus of many Mom & Mind episodes, but infant mental health is often overlooked in our discussions. It’s fascinating to see the intersection of infant mental health and perinatal health, and research shows that we need to consider how these two systems work together to bring mental health to both parents and their babies. We are jumping into this interesting topic with today’s guest. Meyleen Velasquez is a psychotherapist who specializes in infant and perinatal mental health. Her practice supports individuals identifying as women and clinicians working on practicing from an anti-oppressive framework. In today’s episode, we’ll talk about what infant mental health is and why it’s important to consider--along with perinatal mental health. Many moms worry about not doing the right thing for their child, so they fall into the traps of modern parenthood. Meyleen talks about the reality of parenthood, assuring you that you aren’t messing up your kids if you don’t attend to them ALL the time. Show Highlights: What infant mental health and why it’s important The intersection of infant mental health and perinatal mental health: infants need a caregiver to provide calming, soothing, focused attention, and the caregiver needs a safe space to express emotions Why there isn’t much focus on the crossover between infant mental health and perinatal mental health The need to share information with parents in the space of compassion and gentleness In the parent/child relationship, a basic need is that struggling parents need support Why an infant who doesn’t show a full range of emotions is cause for concern, but those emotions can’t be overinterpreted The need to be “good enough,” and look at parenting as a whole and not just what happened in one day Why parents need at least 30 min./day to take care of themselves The red flag of developmentally inappropriate regression in young children Overinterpretation vs. under interpretation Myths and misconceptions about infant mental health How we can help an infant learn to co-regulate Why parents need to take breaks to soothe themselves How babies respond differently in different settings and relationships Hopeful messages for parents: “Infants and young children are extremely resilient. If parents can get the support they need, then babies can bounce back. Nothing is a forever situation because we can be good enough and create healthy, thriving babies with relationships that we also enjoy.” Resources: Hummingbird Counseling Facebook: Hummingbird Counseling Zeroththree
