Architekci mody, mistrzowie awangardy, czarne kruki – japońscy projektanci, którzy w Paryżu przełomu lat 70. i 80.

In a rare interview, the influential Japanese designer speaks with BoF's Imran Amed about the philosophy that underpins his boundary-breaking career. Background: After graduating from Keio University with a law degree, Yohji Yamamoto realised he wasn't interested in the law. “I didn't want to join the ordinary society,” he says. “So I told my mother after graduation … ‘I want to help you.'” She agreed to let him work at her dressmaking shop in Kabukicho, an entertainment district in Tokyo's Shinjuku ward, and learn from the sewing assistants if he enrolled at Bunka Fashion College, now famous for training designers such as Kenzo Takada, Junya Watanabe and Yamamoto himself. After graduating, Yamamoto went on to set up a small ready-to-wear company that slowly acquired buyers in all of Japan's major cities. This success eventually led him to Paris, where his signature tailoring and draping in oversized silhouettes created an aesthetic earthquake at Paris Fashion Week in 1981. Since then, Yamamoto has developed a cult following of loyalists who swear by his avant-garde designs. “I'm not working in the mainstream,” he says. “I'm working in the side stream.” This week on The BoF Podcast, we revisit Imran Amed's rare interview with the legendary Japanese designer about his storied career — and the mindset designers need to succeed. Key Insights: Yamamoto says the fashion industry's increasingly fast-pace has come at the expense of true creativity. “For me the fashion business became a money business,” he said. “I felt I've been losing my competitors year by year.” Yamamoto believes that modern technology can be a distraction. “When I speak with young designers, I [tell] them shut your computer,” he said. “If you really want to see real things, real beauty, you have to go there by walking.” Yamamoto believes it's a designer's job to completely immerse themselves in design. “If you want to create something, keep resisting the mediocracy of ordinary things. It's a life's work. Are you ready to sacrifice yourself to create something?” Additional Resources: Watch the full interview here: Inside Yohji Yamamoto's Fashion Philosophy The Magic of Yohji Yamamoto

We've got a shoplifting case for the record books, Chanel is fighting against global warming in a creative way, and we find out what went wrong at Nanette Lepore. There's a new collaboration we love (hint: Telfar's involved) and one we hate. And we remember Kenzo Takada. Come hang out!
Who will wear the crown? Listen in for the Paris conclusion of this season’s GOC. Chanel opted for a big blockbuster, while Loewe was equally as effective with their interactive show in a box. Maison Margiela offered a welcome mix of behind the scenes inspiration for the collection and insight into house codes via their 45 minute movie. Cecile Bahnsen kept is safe (and beautiful) and Natacha Ramsay-Levi had one of her strongest showings at Chloe. We wish we could say the same for Matthew William’s debut at Givenchy. We tried to like it; we really did. But alas, no. Just no. In Style Snacks, Kenzo Takada passed away from Covid complications, Justin. Bieber designed a pair of Crocs (yes, you read that correctly), Dries Van Noten is opening a LA store, Chanel is partnering with Sunrun to provide solar power to low income families and a new Karl Lagerfeld biography is out with some surprising new information. www.runwaywalkscurrenttalks.com https://www.instagram.com/runwaywalkscurrenttalks/ https://twitter.com/RunwayTalks https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCW7W32h_5l7nnlrL1vazjlw/featured

With a career in fashion spanning 5 decades, Florence Deschamps has worked with some of the biggest names in the industry, including Rei Kawakubo of Comme des Garçons, and Kenzo Takada. Florence is passionate about finding and mentoring creative talent. In her Paris showroom, she introduces emerging designers and their collections to the world’s top buyers. Florence works closely with her young and hip showroom director, Marina Lyritzi. Marina is a talented content creator and branding specialist. Through her work as a stylist and online influencer, Marina tells the story of designers and their products, with a youthful and joyful voice. In this episode: Part 1 - Florence Dressing up in her grandmother’s designer wardrobe in Connecticut. Florence studied at Sarah Lawrence College and La Sorbonne. She also studied dance with George Balanchine. Florence began her fashion career working as a model in the late 1960s. With photographer Sarah Moon she learnt the art of photography. Working in public relations at French fashion house, Dorothée Bis, was very formative. In the early 1980s Florence discovered Comme des Garçons and met Rei Kawakubo. She became the president of Comme des Garçons, and launched the brand internationally. Today Florence presents and sells her young designers’ collections to the great fashion stores around the world, including Rei Kawakubo’s Dover Street Market, and Blake in Chicago. Good proportion, a sense of harmony, and a sense of humour and playfulness are important in a designer’s work. Part 2 - Marina (27m40s) Marina met Florence at Paris Fashion Week when she was interning with an Italian bag designer. Marina had a fashion blog for several years, before shifting to Instagram. She collaborates with fashion brands and recently won first prize in Marie Claire Greece blogger awards, and has worked with H&M. It’s more effective for consumers to see fashion products on real people, rather than very tall and thin models. It’s important for designers to have a good connection with their showroom. Strong brand DNA and a clear target market are very important for commercial success. Bonus audio – What the dog thinks (36m10s)
Welcome to the new age of ancient wisdom. We in the west are currently smack dab in the middle of a collective spiritual awakening. Or as our esteemed guest, Guru Jagat affectionately calls it in this episode- the new new age. Whatever you call it, it’s clear that there is a hopeful surge of interest in the area of personal development via spiritual practices. People young and old find themselves looking to the spiritual teachers and traditions of the past to help make sense of the present, and to light a path to a future that carries meaning, and hope. Yoga seems to be everywhere. And it's not just in the crunchy, granola capitals like LA and San Francisco anymore. It’s hit middle America like a waft of curry carried by the winds of change. You might even catch a juiced-up meathead in a yoga class at the gym these days for reasons other than the fact that that’s where you’ll likely find the highest concentration of Lulu Lemon-clad booties doing downward dogs. They are there for the same reason Wall Street brokers use meditation to manage stress: They know there is more to life than the tangible, material plane of reality. And they want to experience it. Young hipsters show off their mindfulness practice poses on Instagram. Native American dream catchers and healing crystals adorn the dashboards of today's’ latest breed of Prius driving spirit seekers. A new language has even emerged on the scene. Terminology like ‘Holding space,' ‘Namaste’ and ‘Balancing your chakras’ have become language you overhear while standing in line at the bank. But what does all this mean, and how can we discern the true from the false? The passing fads from the timeless, universal truths? Can we still live a ‘normal’ life while pursuing a deeper, metaphysical state of being? In this two-part episode with Kundalini Yoga teacher and thought-leader Guru Jagat, we take a very practical, if not irreverent view of the current state of affairs of modern spirituality as seen through the lens of ancient yogic tradition and practice. In it, you will not only learn about the lineage of yoga she practices and teaches, but also how she has managed to create a small empire based on these principles, and how she continues to inspire the current, and incoming generation to find the sometimes hidden, deeper meaning in life. Be the change you want to see in the world by sharing this show with someone who shares your curiosity of the unknown.
