Dairy farmers are waiting to witness the impact of revisions to the Federal Milk Marketing Orders (FMMO) beginning in June. How can you best prepare your farm for some of the risk that comes with these changes? Leonard Polzin is a dairy economist with the Division of Extension. He’ll be walking us through the what-ifs of 2025 wiuth Stephanie Hoff. But first, he reminds us that the Dairy Margin Coverage enrollment is open now! (Jan. 29-March 31) Foggy start to a Friday morning. Stu Muck says the mild weather we enjoyed Thursday is over for a little while. Today the movie "Green and Gold" opens nationwide. The film about a dairy farmer that bets the farm on the Green Bay Packers, was largely filmed in Wisconsin and specifically, Door County. John Sawyer is just a regular guy in Egg Harbor. He used to milk cows, today he raises beef along with selling real estate. He became a critical partner to the movie's directors and producers by bringing in fields of crops, farming equipment, dairy equipment and livestock from the area to create the 90's era setting for the film. He talks about the experience with Pam Jahnke. Craig T. Nelson stars as "Buck" the dairy farmer at the center of "Green and Gold". He shares with Pam Jahnke his admiration of today's farmers, and how he hopes the movie portrays them. Feb. 1st has been touted as the day that the Trump Administration will begin deploying tariffs. No one knows what or where these tariffs will impact, but agriculture has to be ready. How do you get your mind around that kind of business altering adjustment? Megan Roberts, Principal Quantitative and Economic Analyst at Compeer Financials speaks with Pam Jahnke about an upcoming webinar designed to help farms prepare. When eighteen-year-old recent high school graduate Tiffany Valiante was struck and killed by a train in July 2015, the news came as a shock to friends and family, who couldn't fathom why the teenager had been out walking the tracks that night. Their shock and confusion quickly turned to outrage and disbelief when, less than twenty-four hours later, Tiffany's death was ruled a suicide by the New Jersey Transit Police, who were tasked with investigating the incident. As far as everyone knew, Tiffany was a happy, outgoing girl with a bright future and a sports scholarship to Mercy College in the fall—they couldn't think of a single reason why she would have wanted to end her life. Despite the official conclusions about her death, the Valiante family have never believed Tiffany intentionally stepped in front of the train that night, and in the months and years that have passed since her death, many other people have come to a similar conclusion. In fact, they're confident the evidence and numerous unanswered questions suggest Tiffany had not gone into the woods voluntarily and that her death is at best suspicious, and at worst a murder. Jon Jarosh from Destination Door County joins for a look at the Door County Coastal Byway, 66 miles of beauty and charming towns on the Door Peninsula along Highways 42 and 57, from Sturgeon Bay north to beautiful coasts, state and county parks, and towns like Egg Harbor, Fish Creek, Ephraim, Sister Bay, Ellison Bay, Gills Rock, Baileys Harbor, and Jacksonport. Mary Motiff from Bayfield County (and the mayor of its county seat, Washburn) joins for the Lake Superior Scenic Byway conversation. The Byway covers 70 miles along Highway 13 in Bayfield County, showing off the beauty of the northern coast of the state from near Ashland through Washburn and Bayfield over to Cornucopia, Port Wing, and Herbster with beaches, forest, orchards, wineries, and even the first National Tribal Park in the nation along the way. The Nicolet-Wolf River Scenic Byway is the newest, covering 145 miles through the Nicolet National Forest and along the beautiful Wolf River, which has a National Scenic River designation. The Lower Wisconsin River State Scenic Byway covers 100 miles along Highway 60 from Lodi to Bridgeport by Prairie du Chien, giving you a nice cross-section of Wisconsin's incredible Driftless Area and the shifting courses of the Wisconsin River and its valley. Finally, Wisconsin's segment of the Great River Road gets covered as it runs along the Mississippi River from East Dubuque to Prescott. This multi-state byway actually begins in Minnesota and follows the Mississippi River for 10 states until it ends in New Orleans, Louisiana, but Wisconsin's segment is the most scenic (by many measures, not just ours!) It covers 250 miles, much of it along Highway 35, through 33 river towns. These include some of the oldest settlements in the state, the dynamic city of La Crosse as well as Prairie du Chien (the only place where two state designated scenic byways meet) and charming smaller towns like Trempealeau, Stockholm, Pepin, Alma, Fountain City, and Potosi. You can enjoy many scenic overlooks, with some great birding opportunities including bald eagles. Insights from The Art and Science of Wine Tasting with Niccolò Baldelli-Boni, Josh McCallen and Jin Ahn. In Episode 3 of the Inspired Money Podcast's live stream series, "The Taste of Success," hosted by Andy Wang and produced by Bradley Jon Eaglefeather, a distinguished panel—Niccolò Baldelli-Boni, Josh McCallen, and Jin Ahn—shared their wisdom on the art and science of wine tasting. The segment, fittingly titled "The Art and Science of Wine Tasting," explored the complexities of sensory evaluation, wine characteristics, and the importance of group tasting. Here are the key takeaways from this enlightening segment. The Intricacies of Sensory Evaluation Niccolò Baldelli-Boni, a seasoned wine enthusiast, emphasized the need for a comprehensive sensory evaluation when tasting wine. He pointed out that it's not just about sipping; it's about visual examination, olfactory evaluation, and taste analysis. These techniques help in discovering the wine's complexity and character. The Olfactory Journey: From Flaw Detection to Complexity Jin Ahn, a professional in the field, elaborated on the olfactory evaluation process. He highlighted the importance of first identifying any flaws in the wine, such as cork taint or oxidation. Once the wine passes this initial test, the focus shifts to its fruit profile, non-fruit characteristics, and overall complexity. The Power of Group Tasting Jin Ahn also emphasized the value of group tasting, especially with those more knowledgeable. He explained that group settings allow for comparative tasting, which is crucial for understanding the nuances between different wines, vintages, or vineyards. It's a collaborative learning experience that can significantly enhance your wine-tasting skills. The Legacy of Renault Winery Josh McCallen introduced us to the fascinating world of Renault Winery, the second oldest winery in America, surprisingly located in New Jersey. He shared the rich history of the winery, founded in the 1800s, and its unique terroir. This segment served as a reminder that the world of wine is vast and full of surprises, and that history and location often play a significant role in a wine's character. Conclusion The segment "The Art and Science of Wine Tasting" from Episode 3 of the Inspired Money Podcast's live stream series, "The Taste of Success," provided a rich tapestry of insights and perspectives. The conversation wasn't just about tasting; it was about doing so in a way that aligns with a deeper understanding and appreciation of wine. As you navigate the evolving landscape of wine tasting, let the wisdom of Niccolò Baldelli-Boni, Josh McCallen, and Jin Ahn be your guiding stars. by Story Alchemist - Stella Knight (Creative Collaborative Media Design by EaglesVision). Guest Profiles: Nicholas Baldelli-Boni lives in Tuscany and can trace his family roots there for over 900 years. He studied in Europe and the United States, then came home and failed (badly) at running an agricultural business. Today, he works with luxury tourism in Cortona and Florence and invests in real estate. Jin Ahn is co-owner and general manager at noreetuh, a Hawaiian restaurant in the East Village. He's responsible for the restaurant's award-winning wine list of approximately 300 selections with a strong representation from France and Germany. In addition to the wines, there are a number of craft beers and specialty sakes on the list. If you're looking for good Old-World Riesling or red Burgundy in New York City, then this is where to go. Josh McCallen is a business turnaround expert and resort rehab specialist. He is a multi-faceted leader in the luxury, residential, hospitality, and real estate project leadership. In the past 20 years, Mr. McCallen has led projects, generating well over $100,000,000 in revenues. As CEO and president of Vivamee Hospitality, he oversees Renault Winery in Egg Harbor, NJ, one of the only vintners in the U.S. with the privilege of calling his sparkling wine Champagne. Imagine building a brand new artisan cheese factory. You’ve made your very first batch of cheese, and just days later, opened a shiny new retail store. It’s the beginning of a busy tourist season in Door County, Wisconsin. Customers are flowing in, eager to see a state-of-the art factory, cheese market, restaurant and wine counter. You’ve got cases filled with nearly a hundred different cheeses, charcuterie from around the world, and specialty food items for sale. But everyone wants one thing: to taste and buy your cheese. The problem? None of it will be ready for months. That's the situation Master Cheesemaker Mike Brennenstuhl, owner of Door Artisan Cheese Company, found himself in this spring. After building a brand new, 18,000 square-foot facility in Egg Harbor, Wisconsin, that includes a retail market selling more than 100 different varieties of cheese, a wine counter with 150 different wines from around the world, and a fine-dining restaurant serving small plates and full entrees, the one thing Mike Brennenstuhl could not offer was his own cheese. It just wasn't ready yet. "It was brutal in the beginning," Mike says. "We did good sales from day one, but how do you explain to people who come in that you don't have any of your own cheese ready yet? We were making fresh cheeses, like Colby, but even that takes a month to age out. We're finally in a place now where we have some cheeses for sale that we're making, and it's been a lot more fun."
