Talk to people that Chris Krimitsos has spent any amount of time with and you'll hear descriptions like “changemaker,” “motivator,” “catalyst for change,” and “inspiration.” Whether it's a major corporation's CEO or a solopreneur, Chris is passionate about being a difference maker. Unlike the featured guest who comes in and delivers a keynote and leaves, slipping out the back door like a national celebrity, Chris Krimitsos is the passionate professional who hangs around talking to anyone who wants his time – to listen, evaluate, and affect change. Chris brings the unique perspective of success from both sides of an event. He understands the challenges of the organizer that needs to move an audience, having himself facilitated over 2,000 events that have brought together business owners, toward economic growth, under the umbrella of Tampa Bay Business Owners, which he founded in 2008. That success regionally was the springboard to launching a national event, Podfest Multimedia Expo, which he grew to over 975 attendees in just five years, with an expectation of 1,500-plus in year six, thanks to his ability to communicate key messaging to that community. Channeling that energy into creating a documentary, now he is making an impact globally. Under the CK Productions banner, as a filmmaker and producer, Chris successfully birthed The Messengers: A Podcast Documentary, which obtained worldwide distribution and theatrical screenings. This after having hosted and produced two TV shows earlier in his career. Of note was one of those projects being archived in the Library of Congress. With a unique skill set programmed to stay out in front of rapid change, Chris Krimitsos – as a speaker, as a business leader, and as a source for growth – is empowering audiences toward better opportunities for succeeding in business in the 21st century.

I'm delighted to be speaking to another amazing entrepreneur today! Chris Krimitsos is the creator of the Podfest Multimedia Expo. And he is joining me today to share some funny and inspiring stories, and to talk about podcasting, his take on entrepreneurship, and his new book, Start Ugly: A Timeless Tale About Innovation and Change. Chris's bio Chris Krimitsos is a speaker, a business leader, and a source for growth. He uses his unique skill set to bring the perspective of success from both sides of an event and to empower his audiences towards greater opportunities for succeeding in business. He is a passionate professional who is driven to make a difference, and he has been described as a changemaker, a motivator, and an inspiration.  Chris truly understands the kinds of challenges that event organizers face, having facilitated more than 2000 events himself, under the umbrella of Tampa Bay Business Owners, which he founded in 2008. The success of that organization, regionally, helped Chris with the launching of a national event, the Podfest Multimedia Expo, which he managed to grow to over 975 attendees in just five years, due to his skillful way of communicating key messaging to the podcast community.  Earlier in his career, Chris hosted and produced two TV shows, and one of his projects has been archived in the Library of Congress. Currently, he is making a global impact as a filmmaker and producer under the CK Productions banner, after having successfully created the documentary The Messengers: A Podcast, which obtained worldwide distribution and theatrical screenings. Chris is currently President of the Entrepreneurs' Organization (EO) Tampa. Becoming infamous Chris grew up in New York. He moved to Florida, looking for the freedom to express his ideas. He had always wanted to create a television show, and soon after he finally got the chance to do that, a physical fight broke out between two guests on his live television talk show. The footage got leaked to the press, and Chris landed up in trouble with the management of the TV station.  Although nothing like that ever happened again, that incident set Chris on a course where he eventually got thrown off the TV station.  Guerilla marketing Chris then created a business group. And in the early days, while trying to find speakers for his business group, Chris invested whatever money he had in paying speakers to come and speak. One of those speakers was Jay Conrad Levinson, the author of the book, Guerrilla Marketing. No money for marketing Chris loves marketing, so he assumed that everyone would know Jay Conrad Levinson, and at least 500 people would come and hear him speak. After paying him, however, Chris was left with no money for marketing, and very few people turned up to hear Jay Conrad Levinson speak. Filming a promo So Chris decided to film a promo for the book, Guerilla Marketing. And ironically, he ended up using the Guerilla Marketing technique to sell Jay Conrad Levinson's books!  A life full of experiences and colorful characters A long time ago, Chris decided to fill his life with experiences and colorful characters. So he has lots of stories and colorful tales to share. Although he loves business, he's good at it, and he's interviewed many big Titans of business over the years, he has seen many of them doing the same thing over and over, for the last forty years or so, and that does not hold much interest to him. Unique people Chris is intrigued by unique people. And he loves events.  Through his events, he has had the opportunity to create a lot of different experiences for himself and others, and he has also been able to meet lots of people and create lots of colorful stories. Lessons learned Chris has learned from all his experiences.  From his experience with Guerilla Marketing, he learned that although he was paying far too much for speakers, he had still created a lot of value. And that experience also changed his philosophy on big-name speakers. Getting Gary Vee to Speak  Chris was able to get Gary Vee to speak at his local event before Gary was a big deal, and he did it through a self-liquidating offer. Hear how he made it big even before he knew what the next big thing was. Functionalizing your art form Chris has also learned to functionalize his art form. He explains that functionalizing your art means getting to know how you work and then functionalizing it in a way that people can see it for your specific DNA, or blueprint. In that way, you can find the people who are the right fit for what you do, and you can grow from there. Community is Chris's specialty Chris has created his community and tribe over the years. And through that, he has seen that community is his specialty.   Links and resources: Chris's website Entrepreneurs' Organization (EO) Tampa The Guerilla Marketing website Books mentioned:  Guerilla Marketing by Jay Conrad Levinson Start Ugly: A Timeless Tale About Innovation and Change by Chris Krimitsos Connect with Eric: On LinkedIn On Facebook On Instagram On Website

This week’s Misfit Entrepreneur is Chris Krimitsos. For many, Chris needs no introduction as the founder of the Podfest Multimedia expo, the world’s premier conference for all things podcasting and new media. Chris is also the founder of the Tampa Bay Business Owners organization, CK Media Productions, and is a speaker and consultant. But, more than anything Chris is a master at creating and facilitating successful events. He’s has facilitated over 2000 successful events and recently started a podcast focused on helping people learn the secrets to creating and putting on great events. It’s called the Conference Cashflow Podcast. I’ve had the opportunity to spend some time with Chris and I am amazed how our philosophies and principles are so similar – so there is a lot we can talk on today, but I want to focus first on what you can learn from Chris about how to put on a great, successful event. www.Podfest.us www.chriskrimitsos.com Chris grew up in New York and had a lot of inspiration from his uncles. They came as immigrants with nothing in their pockets. They worked hard, got into the restaurant industry, and were very successful. He would learn from them and started his first business at 13 years old selling candy. He was serial entrepreneur ever since. He moved to Florida in the mid 2000’s and invested in real estate. He was fortunate to have exited before the crash. Chris then got into production and produced two live TV shows. After some success, he started a group known as the Tampa Bay Business Owners. After growing it substantially, he sold it. He then started Podfest and is now its 6th year. Why should people consider doing events as part of their business strategy? There is something about today’s day and age that life events can do that things like social media cannot. Coming together with people of the same interests is something people crave. It is also a great way to drive business and create income. Putting on over 2000 events – what would you say are the critical elements someone needs to have to create successful event? You need an audience that is hungry for the information. You must be very specific about you are teaching and the topic of the event. If you can’t describe in 4-5 bullet points what they will walk away with, the there is an issue. The best speakers are not always professional ones, but great subject matter experts. Make sure to have early bird pricing and then raise your rate as you get closer to the event. Never set up more chairs than you have tickets sold. At the 10 min mark, Chris gives two case study examples on how to pick speakers and find the right ones. Make sure you speaker is relatable to your audience. You cannot have a disconnect with your audience and your speaker. You always want to have someone that is a step ahead of your audience, but not 4-5 steps ahead. Talk to us about the size event, what do people need to know? Starting out smaller is good and “big” when you are starting out is 20 or so people. You can do meetups 1x a month and then once a year do a larger event of 100 or more. Look what is happening in the local area, see if there is a need that is being underserved, and then create your event to serve it. You have to watch your expenses closely. Don’t go “free.” At minimum, have a contribution amount of $10 or so and make it optional. You want to have value on what you are doing. You can then graduate to fee based. Once you establish a following, then you can do larger events at $50 to $100 to attend and so on. How do you promote and get people to come to an event? For local events, the simplest way is to make sure you have the city name in your title of your event. There are 3 very simple ways to get traffic: Setup a Meetup Page which you can invite people to. Sell your tickets on Evenbrite and use their marketing expertise. Setup a Facebook event page and spend $50-100 targeting people in the local area. Best secrets to make an event memorable? People show up for the education, but they come back for the collaboration. Make sure to leave room and breaks for people to connect and collaborate. Create an experience. For local Meetups, 1x a month is a good cadence with special workshops that are a premium. Are there any big “don’ts” for events? Be very careful not to overpay with hotels and watch your food and beverage minimums If you can get the room for the value of the room and not do food and beverage, if you don’t need it. Make sure the hotel is right for your needs. Smaller hotels will charge just for the room and it will cost a couple of hundred dollars for the day If someone would like to speak at an event, what should they do? A lot of promotors these days that work with millennials don’t want to be approached by a representative – they want to be contacted by the speaker themselves. Promotors are doing the best they can to fulfill their audience needs, so make sure you know what the audience is looking for. If you do get selected – make sure your presentation is beautiful and clear with more pictures, so people can see it and understand it. Make sure you give the audience what they are looking for, not just what you want to share. What are your feelings on the current state of podcasting and what does the future hold over the next few years? Podcasting has really just started growing. 30% of the US is using podcasting, but are not “powerusers.” A lot more money is coming into the space to advertise and fund content. We will see growth like we haven’t seen before… Any specific things people should watch and follow in podcasting? Podcasting is on demand audio that is searchable through the internet. It can be SEO and content rich. You can use podcasts for some many things – ways to market your business, fill a need, focus on a very small niche. Don’t look at it as an interview show, look at it as searchable content. What are some critical habits that you believe all entrepreneurs should practice in today’s world? Being present in the moment. Using time effectively – focus and not waste it. Be very conscious to remove all time-wasting distractions from your work life that you can. What is your best advice for an entrepreneur starting out? Design a future that is worth living into. Spend time visualizing that future. Make sure your why is big enough that the how become irrelevant. At the 33 min mark, Chris talks about how to manifest your future and your why… Burn your “why” into your brain by visualizing what it is you are going to live into. What you intently focus on will become reality. Visualize while in motion if you can. Your why centers around the reason you are doing what you do – know what achieving your success looks like and how you celebrate it. This is really celebrating your why. If your why is strong – you will break through any issues with the how. Where do you want to go? What does it look like? Taste like? Smell like? Sound like? Etc. Go that deep…   Best Quote: "Design a future that is worth living into..."   Chris's Misfit 3: 1. Keep your feet on the ground and your eyes on the stars 2. Make sure you have a future that is worth living into 3. Monitor your self-talk and how you are programming your brain

I was recently asked to give a Keynote presentation for the Tampa Bay Business Owners.  That name may sound familiar to you because, yes, it was the company I ran for 7 years alongside my hubs.  So, when he asked me to Keynote, I was actually more nervous than any other presentation I’ve given to date!  (You’d think it would be the opposite since it is a group I know so intimately).     Why?  Because I had seen SO MANY amazing people standing on that stage over all those years and knew what a powerful platform it is!  And, because I have never truly told my entrepreneurial story before. I mean, in pieces, yes. As a way to drive home points during strategic presentations, sure.  But the whole story? Nope. And that was a bit nerve-wracking for me.   I’m turning around and sharing the recording of that Keynote with you because, for as much as you hear me talk about the pieces of all those “ups and downs,” I want to make sure you really get that I’ve had them!  In so many ways that you wouldn’t guess!  Like, did you know this whole thing started with me writing an ebook about how to find true love? And did you know I had a copywriting business?   Did you know I had a successful YouTube channel that I just gave up one day?   I realized as I was putting this presentation together that it was the perfect embodiment of our pasts only making sense when we stopped for a second and looked back at how all the dots connected.     It’s just like Steve Jobs said,   “You can’t connect the dots looking forward.  You can only connect connect them looking backwards.  So you have to trust that the dots will somehow connect in your future.”   My intention is to share with you how I connected the dots in this moment so that you may feel an immense amount of GRACE for yourself and TRUST as you continue to move forward through your own story.     *** Join the Biz Women Rock Academy today and get your business working FOR you purposefully, productively and profitably!  http://BizWomenRockAcademy.com

Click to tweet: .@Biz_WomenRock is sharing her story to inspire you on Women Taking the Lead https://womentakingthelead.com/233 #inspiration Playing Small Moment Katie was always a big dreamer. In college, Katie was interrupted by a man who felt sorry for her, saying that having such big dreams would set her up for failure. Katie believed him and let that discourage her dreams for a while. The Wake Up Call During a low moment, where Katie was filled with self-doubt, she happened to get interviewed by her friend on a podcast. Katie told her friend about her eating disorder and weight loss struggles that she had overcome. After speaking to her friend about all of those things she overcame, Katie realized how much growth had happened and ultimately knew she could overcome life’s struggles again. Style of Leadership Katie always makes sure to remain authentic and vulnerable. She knows how important it is to share vulnerable moments with others, especially women, as no one wants to feel alone in their struggles. What Are You Excited About? Katie launched Biz Women Rock Elite community recently, where she gets the opportunity to be the leader for women who are on fire about their businesses and determined to grow. Current Business Challenge Katie has big dreams, and sometimes she feels there is a gap between what she strives for and how she shows up. So, Katie works on keeping up with her dreams while giving herself some grace. Leadership Practice Katie’s number one leadership practice is her morning journaling, or what she calls Mindset Olympic Work. This practice helps Katie put her vision into words. Advice For Younger Self Katie believes in knowing herself, while not paying attention to what anyone else is doing or what anyone else thinks she should be doing. In this episode I actually got to host a live interview during the Podcast Movement conference with Katie Krimitsos, the founder of Biz Women Rock!. Katie specializes in group and 1:1 coaching to help female entrepreneurs build businesses that will enable them to have the freedom to design their own lifestyles. She is the voice behind the Biz Women Rock! podcast and the Facebook group of the same name. “I fell in love with the idea that any individual could create this thing called a business that could really be the ticket to the freedom to design the life we really want.”   - Katie Krimitsos Episode highlights: As a society we tend to think you can’t make money from creative pursuits, but to Katie this is all a mindset issue. Find three people who do what YOU want to do, so that you can see that it is possible to make money that way. Katie fell in love with entrepreneurship while working with her husband in an organization called the Tampa Bay Business Owners. In 2014 she decided to start a podcast to shine a light on female business owners so we can all share the journey together. Katie’s coaching and her academy all grew out of the podcast. You don’t have to be more than a few steps ahead of the people you’re trying to serve in order to be helpful to them. The key obstacle to a lot of business owners is that they don’t have the confidence to believe in themselves. Katie journals every morning to help her stay in tune with gratitude and visioning. She often chooses a future date and writes about what could happen by then to make herself proactive in her own life. Katie uses her journaling to give her ideas for new content to create for her audience. Feeling discouraged or down? Use affirmations to help you “fake it ‘til you make it.” Everything doesn’t have to be perfect; you don’t have to know everything before you begin. Just experiment! When you start to feel overwhelmed and you feel like your business is running you, it’s time to go back to your WHY.   Mentioned in this episode: My 3-day challenge to help you use your stash and WIN! Chris speaks with passion, experience and knowledge as he educates business owners, business professionals and entrepreneurs by arming them with the tools they need to succeed in today’s business landscape.   If you host a user conference, national sales meeting, speaker program or exhibit at a trade show conference and you want to get more attendee traffic-this episode is for you! 4 Power Tips to Help You Rock Your Next Event: How to create an evergreen marketing promotion platform for your event Key strategies to get attendees to visit the exhibits at your National Sales Meeting Why you need to develop an internal  speaking program How to take your national sales meeting or user conference  to the next level Time Stamped Show Notes: 0:10 Rock Your Trade Show Introduction 0:20 Podcast Introduction-remember if you would like more information about user conferences and national sales meetings go to www.rockyourtradeshow.com/letstalk 1:00 Key Tips Reviewed: Evergreen content promotion- How to get attendees to visit exhibitors- Speaker strategies and How to take the attendee experience to the next level at your upcoming user conference. 1:55 Chris talks about why he transitioned from broadcasting to hosting events 2:28 How growing up in a Greek family where there were monthly events impressed upon Chris the power of face-to-face experience. 3:17 The difference between a monthly recurring event which Chris hosts for the Tampa Bay Business Owners and a destination conference like Podfest.  He shares insights into how to schedule speakers, select hotels and special tactics used for each event 5:17 Why Tony Robins’ events are some of the “best run events on the planet” from the music to how Tony Robins controls the crowd- it is a wow experience. 5:39 Chris shares what it was like to have Jairek Robbins as a speaker and how expectations were high considering that Tony Robbins is his Dad. 5:55 Creating a memorable entrance on stage-Chris hid Jairek behind a screen and he was “revealed” to the audience in an unexpected way that attendees talked about after the presentation.  People shared that it was one of their favorite things they remembered about the program. 6:50 Exploring what it is like to be the son of an icon like Tony Robbins?  Chris had high expectations on him-Jairek is an amazing educator and does a great job speaking. 8:20 How to create a memorable experience for the attendee -Chris shares his strategies for pre-event, during and post event. 9:37 How to make your event “sticky”, Chris suggests starting with a power networking experience to help people feel at ease and enjoy themselves immediately.  Making people feel comfortable to meet 300-500 people takes planning.  Volunteers at Podfest for example, are very happy people, warm and inviting. 10:21 Networking breaks are a key strategy to help attendees maximize the value they get out of the event.  Podfest kicks off the event with Speed Networking to help people meet. 12:00 Planning is very important-when there is an event that has 100 panelists, sharing the agenda too far out may have changes.  Instead, Chris recommends releasing the agenda two weeks out so the schedule is finalized. 12:50 One way to help attendees stay connected is handing out pre-printed post cards that attendees can mail to someone that made a difference for them at the conference. 13:10 Attendees are encouraged to make 60 day goals and are sent a postcard 60 days to remind the attendee what the goals were. 13:22 Planning includes feedback sheets and negotiations with AV providers prior to the event. 14:40 Our audience can implement this idea with post cards that sales reps can send out at your next   National Sales Meeting to help the reps stay connected after the meeting. 15:27 Chris discusses how to get attendees to the exhibit area.  If the meeting is small enough, the exhibits can be out in the corridor not in a separate room which helps people visit the area. 16:20 Exhibitors are encouraged to have prizes that are tied into a treasure map-companies can submit questions that they would like attendees to know.  After the attendee visits each booth, they get a sign off on a treasure map.  As soon as all of the spaces are completed they can turn the maps in for a drawing and win one of the prizes like a microphone, drone, or other item that has value. 17:24 Winners are selected throughout the meeting and it drives excitement for both attendees and the exhibitors alike. 18:25 Exhibitors are encouraged to promote the Podfest event and let their customers and list know they will be at the event.  If they do a Facebook live video or other promotion, the exhibiting company can get exposure on social media feed from Podfest as well. 19:11 “Marketing is an event like oxygen”.  You have to constantly be promoting your event. 20:42 Why naming an event with a regional name can hinder attendance.  After removing the word  Florida from Podfest, attendance and registration increased. 22:15 Why companies should consider creating an evergreen 3 episode podcast as a  marketing tool- This single Series Podcast can be used year in and year out. 22:40 It is worth the investment to create an evergreen podcast and Chris hired Dave Jackson’s School of Podcasting to crate The Podfest Chronicles that is story driven and a professional series that can live on after the event. 23:43 Find out the benefits of having a big name speaker and also why you should have a speaker program internally so that you can promote your own people.  You need to find talent within your organization and you may be surprised to learn that internal speakers will have a bigger impact on the attendees because they can visualize that these speakers are just like them. 24:57 Three key strategies to reduce fatigue when you are hosting an event: 1. Eat clean. 2. Sleep if possible despite the adrenaline from the event. 3. Finish business and wrap up before taking a few days off.  25:48 Chris describes how he recharges with his wife Katie Kramitsos, who is also a podcaster of a global show Biz Women Rock. 26:30 One thing to remember when planning an event-don’t over set up a room- it will feel empty.  Set up just under the right number of chairs so that people feel it was a successful event. 27:40 If you want to learn more about Podfest.us check out the website and use coupon code joinme.  Chris can also be reached at Chris@podfest.us 28:30 Love what you heard? On this episode of Rhodes to Success I interview Katie Krimitsos, who runs The Tampa Bay Business Owners group and is the host of Biz Women Rock, which is an amazing podcast that features business and entrepreneurial women. Katie's team did everything right in launching her podcast and today we talk about leveraging the power of a Facebook group for fans. In this podcast find out how Facebook groups can help you engage with your listeners.   Main Questions Asked Tell us about the Biz Women Rock podcast and why you're passionate about it.  Talk about your Facebook marketing efforts. What was the investment in your Facebook ad campaign? Talk about your Facebook group and how you've grown it.  Talk about building your list by having people opt in so they could join the Facebook group.  What is the purpose of your group and how do you make sure people know and understand what is and isn't appropriate to post? Talk about how you used the group to promote the podcast.    Key Lessons Learned Biz Women Rock Podcast  Facebook pages allow your listeners to interact with you. Groups allow your listeners to interact with each other.  The Biz Women Rock podcast is an opportunity for savvy businesswomen to share their journey. This isn't topic specific show but rather is story related.  Katie wanted to build a solid community rather than a high number of listeners.    Facebook Marketing  Katie paid for adverts and started a page before the podcast launched.  Within two weeks of advertising she had 2,000 likes on the Biz Women Rock page.  Katie was spending $300-$500 per month.  You need to spend money on Facebook ads so you can get your page in front of the right people but you need to be active in order for this to work  If you have 100,00 people on your page but no one is engaging then the high number doesn't mean anything.  Katie's Facebook content strategy was to post 3-5 times per day.  Quotes with a photo of person's face get a lot of engagement than just the text on its own.   The majority of what Katie posts is curation and not just her own podcast content.    Facebook Groups  This is an opportunity to talk to the whole group and the members get to talk back and forth to each other.  Katie marketed the group to the page, and created a specific graphic for the group.  Katie personally reached out to 10-15 people on the Biz Women Rock Facebook page and invited them to brand ambassadors within the group.  The ambassador role was to ask questions, respond to posts, making their own posts.   There was a general Facebook ad for the group as well one that specifically targeted people who already like the page.  Always provide different content or messages to the group than you would provide on the page.  Anytime an individual in a group feels like you are talking to them directly, your group will multiply and engage more because they will feel like you really care about them.  If you can make 2,500 people feel like they are the most important person in the group then you have done your job well.     Facebook Online Group Culture  The more structure you give the group better behaved people will be and the better the outcome you want to create will happen.  The guidelines (rules) of the BWR group were posted in the group description as well as in the form of a graphic.   The idea of the rules is the keep the group spam free as a way to retain members.  In the beginning the rules graphic was posted weekly or kept as a pinned post.   If someone goes against the rules Katie will contact them personally and if they continue with rogue posts Katie will delete from the group.    Building Your List Via Facebook Groups  Instead of the opt-in on the website, Katie changed it to ‘join our private community,' which takes them to a button to join the group.   The music in today's episode was written by The Danger Os and produced by Nick Palmer. Todays guest joining us on the Steve Jobs inspired Join Up Dots podcast is a lady on a mission to empower the females of the world to...well rock! Being an entrepreneur herself she was often struck by the isolated way that women seem to operate within the business world, and so set out to build a career and online platform for them to be heard. She wants to give them the freedom to flourish in a way that most ladies would find it hard to do. By launching the podcast “Biz Women Rock” she has done just that, and now provides interviews and motivational content from her base in Florida. But that is just a small part of what makes her what she is, as with her husband Chris since 2008, the two have owned a Business Owners organization called the Tampa Bay Business Owners, which supports local entrepreneurs by providing top-notch education, opportunities to connect with peers and leadership programs…everything that could possibly be useful for a business owner to work on their businesses. But what I want to do, is join up the dots by finding out like all our guests, what were the key elements in her childhood, that she can link to adult life? What made her transition from her period in Healthcare, to working with her husband, and then onwards to career freedom and total choices? And when she isn't working 24 hours a day, what inspires her to get going again, after another exhausting day creating such value to the world. Well lets find out as we bring onto the show, the one and only powerhouse, and entrepreneur herself Katie Krimitsos.
