Beware of the mainstream quarterback narrative. This is right when the discourse gets funky. Free agency is behind us. The NFL Draft is one month away. Now, everyone tries to make sense of the incoming class of quarterbacks. Somehow, quarterbacks still slip through the cracks. Back in 2017, in retrospect, there wasn't nearly enough buzz around a swashbuckling quarterback out of Texas Tech named Patrick Mahomes. Of course, Brock Purdy tumbled all the way down to 262nd overall. Other years, QBs are overhyped, overdrafted and flop completely. What should we think about this 2025 group? Here on the Go Long Pod, that's where the conversation begins with Joel Klatt. You can see and hear Klatt everywhere, of course. He is Fox Sports' excellent college football analyst. Be sure to check out “The Joel Klatt Show” everywhere you pod. This spring, he'll also be calling UFL games at Fox. Before dissecting the sport as an analyst, Klatt was the starting quarterback at the University of Colorado in 2003, 2004 and 2005, throwing for nearly 8,000 yards with 46 touchdowns. We get into plenty… * The 2025 Quarterback Class. Is there a hidden gem beyond the top two? * Why he believes in Colorado's Shedeur Sanders, a combination of “Montana” and “Tarkenton.” (Klatt does not hold back.) * As a Colorado alum himself, Klatt knows how bad it was for this program before Deion Sanders' arrival. He also shares insight into the Father-Son dynamic. * One team Klatt sees as a perfect fit for Sanders. * The value of accumulating starts as a collegiate quarterback. He thinks there could be a Purdy hidden in this group.* UFL! We've got real football beginning on March 28. Klatt explains why he believes the league is built to last. * Our former co-host Jim Monos is the GM of the Memphis Showboats. How's it looking for his team? * Is Syracuse Football back? Thank you for listening, subscribing and sharing with a friend. I'll be sure to post the written transcript later. This is a public episode. My guest is the legendary and beloved Loran Smith of the University of Georgia. Among other things, he tells stories of Larry Munson and talks about his friends, such as Butts, Tarkenton, Dooley, and Smart, and gives his unique perspective on the recruitment of Herschel Walker. He also talks about the dilemma of NIL. He also tells how he became the sideline reporter for UGA radio. This is good stuff.
Fran Tarkenton is unquestionably one of the greatest quarterbacks ever to play the game of football. A true legend who rightfully earned his place in the NFL Hall of Fame, the College Football Hall of Fame (for his championship career with the University of Georgia Bulldogs), and on the list of the 50 Greatest Minnesota Vikings AND the 50 Greatest New York Giants. In his rookie season in 1961, Fran joined an expansion team called the Minnesota Vikings, and in the first-ever Vikings game he threw four touchdown passes and ran for a fifth, upsetting the great Chicago Bears. At the time of his retirement from the NFL in 1978, Fran owned every significant passing record: 3,686 pass completions, 47,003 passing yards, and 342 touchdowns. Legend. After retirement, Fran became a commentator alongside the one and only Howard Cosell in the Monday Night Football broadcast booth, he landed a job hosting That's Incredible, one of the biggest sensation TV shows of the 1980s, and he became an early entrant into the software business, a visionary move that launched what would become the longest-lasting and most lucrative part of his illustrious and multifaceted career. At 84.6 years old as of the date of this interview, Fran is as sharp – and as busy – as he's ever been. His company, Tarkenton, is as highly regarded as it is successful in helping other businesses grow and prosper. All the incredible lessons he learned growing up, on the gridiron, in entertainment, and in his many business ventures coalesce into his leadership of Tarkenton to this day. But Fran claims no responsibility for the success he's achieved. He attributes it all to the coaching he's received; in the NFL, from greats like Sid Luckman, Norm Van Brocklin and Bud Grant; and in business, from former IBM CEO John Akers to Walmart founder Sam Walton. In this episode, Fran shares colorful stories about his journey from the streets of Washington, DC; to Athens, Georgia, home of UGA; to the NFL; to entertainment; and ultimately to a wildly successful business career. Footballguys staff writer and FSWA Writer of the Year, Adam Harstad joins RSP Film and Theory as Matt Waldman's cohost for the 2024 football season to discuss practices that will make you a better fantasy GM and NFL fan. There are a lot of excellent writers and analysts in the fantasy industry. There are few that I hold in as high a regard as Adam (and not surprising he earned the FSWA's Fantasy Writer of the Year). He's a forthright human being with a tremendous intellect whose approach to analysis in this space differs from most. He's also an excellent fantasy GM in re-draft and dynasty formats. Adam spends a lot of time examining results and dealing with broad themes of decision-making that help us become better fantasy players and fantasy analysts. https://youtu.be/5vAvNaFUhRs Topics Fran Tarkenton says everything that Patrick Mahomes could do (skills-wise), he already did. The case for Tarkenton, and the case against the Athletic for creating a negative connotation by qualifying the statement with Tarkenton's age. Adam's latest Dynasty and Theory Piece at Footballguys and its practice applications as a GM. Why we agree that adding Skylar Thompson is one of the best choices for GMs this week. And of course, if you want to know about the rookies from this draft class, you will find the most in-depth analysis of offensive skill players available (QB, RB, WR, and TE), with the 2024 Rookie Scouting Portfolio for $21.95. Matt's new RSP Dynasty Rankings and Two-Year Projections Package is available for $24.95 If you're a fantasy GM interested in purchasing past publications for $9.95 each, the 2012-2023 RSPs also have a Post-Draft Add-on that's included at no additional charge. Link to bioRxiv paper: http://biorxiv.org/cgi/content/short/2022.12.20.521200v1?rss=1 Authors: Steinkrauss, A. C., Carpenter, C. M., Tarkenton, M., Overman, A. A., Dennis, N. A. Abstract: Previous work has suggested unitized pairs behave as a single unit and more critically, are processed neurally different than those of associative memories. The current works examines the neural differences between unitization and associative memory using fMRI and multivoxel analyses. Specifically, we examined the differences across face-occupation pairings as a function of whether the pairing was viewed as a person performing the given job (unitized binding) or a person saying they knew someone who had a particular job (associative binding). The results show that at encoding, the angular gyrus can discriminate between unitized and associative target trials. Additionally, during encoding, the medial temporal lobe (hippocampus and perirhinal cortex), frontal parietal regions (angular gyrus and medial frontal gyrus) and visual regions (middle occipital cortex) exhibit distinct neural patterns to recollected unitized and associative targets. Furthermore, the medial frontal gyrus and middle occipital cortex show greater neural similarity for recollected unitized trials than those of recollected associative trials. We conclude that visually unitized pairs may enhance unitization in older adults due to greater similarity of trials within the same condition during the encoding process. In this episode we bring the Minnesota Vikings to the table for debate.
Whether it is new math or old math, we'll be looking at which Vikings quarterback is greater, but first… On tonight's episode of The Real Forno Show, we dive into two topics. Host Tyler Forness will give a brief overview of the late-round picks and what the future could be. The picks were: Rd 5 / pick 165 (22) Esezi Otomewo, Minnesota DE Rd 5 / pick 169 (26) Ty Chandler, North Carolina RB Rd 6 / pick 184 (5) Vederian Lowe, Illinois OT Rd 6 / pick 191 (12) Jalen Nailor, Michigan State WR Rd 7 / pick 277 (6) Nick Muse, South Carolina TE The other topic will be a tad more contentious. There was a major discussion over the weekend comparing Minnesota Vikings quarterbacks across eras and who is the most skilled. Who is the best Vikings quarterback? There is a segment of the fanbase that believes it's Kirk Cousins while others believe it's Daunte Culpepper and Fran Tarkenton. Producer Dave joins Tyler in discussing how to compare players across eras. Fan with us!!! Maybe the most important decision Fran Tarkenton ever made was in 1957, when as a high school senior leading Athens High School to the Georgia state championship, he went with his heart and chose to go to the University of Georgia over Georgia Tech and Auburn. The rest is football history. "Scramblin' Fran" tells the story of the quarterback's unlikely rise at Georgia, highlighted by a memorable SEC title in 1959. The film traces his steps toward a long, successful pro career that saw him go from an unconventional, trailblazing "scrambler" with the Vikings to veteran savior with the Giants, to an icon in Minnesota who, in his second stint with the team, led them to three Super Bowls. Now a successful entrepreneur, Tarkenton will proudly retrace his steps - from his beginnings in Georgia all the way to a return visit to Athens for "G-Day" in 2018 - in this documentary about a football legend.

Today's episode is another episode where it is just me discussing an impactful quote. This quote comes to us from Fran Tarkenton. (If you don't know who Fran Tarkenton is, check out the episode, as I talk a little bit about him and what he meant to me growing up in the 70s.) His quote is another one about leadership, which is a bit of a theme that we have been covering for the last few episodes where it is just me talking (as well as Episode #37 with Kathryn Geouge). Tarkenton said, "Leadership must be demonstrated, not announced." In the episode, I discuss why this is important for us as coaches/leaders to understand. However, I also focus on the reasons why, in many ways, it may be even more important for our players to understand.

However, Washington and Kapp squabbled over terms, and Kapp decided to take his game north to the Canadian Football League and the Calgary Stampeders. After spending two years with Calgary, Kapp was traded to the British Columbia Lions (in 1961) and led them to a Grey Cup Championship in 1964. But winning in Canada wasn’t enough for Kapp. A native of New Mexico, he wanted to play in the U.S. and after the 1966 season made his intentions known. Somehow, some way, Jim Finks, the General Manager of the Minnesota Vikings engineered an incredible trade, and tricky transaction that involved trading players, waiving players and four teams: the Vikings, the expansion New Orleans Saints, the CFL’s BC Lions and Toronto Argonauts. But the move paid off for the Vikings and in just three years, Kapp led Minnesota to an NFL Championship. But … his career in Minnesota was short-lived. He only played for the Vikings for three years, and just one year for the Patriots before his career was over. But what a career it was. Edward Gruver who has written several articles for the Professional Football Researcher’s Association, and who has a new book coming out about the great rivalry between the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Oakland Raiders called, “Hell With the Lid Off: Inside the Steelers-Raiders Rivalry That Changed Pro Football,” joins the podcast for a look back at the fabulous career of Joe Kapp. Links: Sports' Forgotten Heroes website Sports' Forgotten Heroes Patreon Page Sports' Forgotten Heroes twitter ©2018 Sports' Forgotten Heroes
Pro Football Hall of Famer Bob Griese joins Tom Leyden and Butch Stearns as they tell the story of the 1973 NFL season. The 1973 Dolphins completed a two-year stretch of dominance that will likely never be matched in NFL history. Over the course of two years, Miami finished with a 32-2 record and two Super Bowl titles. A year after going undefeated, the Dolphins continued their run of success, winning the AFC East by three games with a 12-2 record. The Cincinnati Bengals and Pittsburgh Steelers both finished 10-4 in the AFC Central, while the Oakland Raiders won the AFC West with a 9-4-1 record. The Dolphins ground game was led by Larry Csonka and Mercury Morris, who combined for 1,957 yards rushing in 1973 - an impressive stat until you compare it to the achievement of OJ Simpson, who ran for an NFL-record 2,003 yards for the Buffalo Bills. Simpson had established himself as a dymanic runner through the first four years of his NFL career, but the Bills offensive line, nicknamed "The Electric Company," helped open massive holes that sprung Simpson loose. He became the first played to eclipse 2,000 yards rushing in a single season. Simpson won the 1973 NFL MVP, despite Buffalo missing the playoffs. In the NFC, the Los Angeles Rams began a run of eight straight seasons during which they'd qualify for the postseason. Led by John Hadl at quarterback, the Rams won th ewest with a 12-2 record, but were beaten in the divisional round of the playoffs by the veteran Dallas Cowboys, who were playing in an eighth-straight NFL postseason. The Minnesota Vikings, who had won 12 games in 1970, 11 in 1971 and 7 in 1972, took the NFC Central title and the NFC's top seed with a 12-2 record in 1973. Fran Tarkenton, who had quarterbacked the Vikings from 1961-66 before spending five seasons with the New York Giants, was in the second year of his second stint in Minnesota. Tarkenton and the Vikings returned to the Super Bowl for the first time in four years, defeating the defending NFC champion Redskins and Dallas in the playoffs. Super Bowl VIII was played at Rice Stadium in Houston in terrible weather, which suited the ground game of the Dolphins. Csonka was named MVP after rushing for a Super Bowl-record 145 yards, leading Miami to a 24-7 win and a second straight championship. The Dolphins became the second team in the Super Bowl-era to win back-to-back championships.
