Genetic Innovation Requires Leadership and Data — The Phenotype Paradox in the Beef Industry

The Angus Conversation

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 18, 2025 57:31 Transcription Available

Genetic innovation in animal agriculture is moving at a faster-than-ever pace, and this episode digs into the history of performance testing while exploring new technologies like computer vision, microbiome analysis and ways to collect more commercial phenotypes. The discussion covers the challenges of more data, including the labor and expense of proposing new traits, along with the opportunities to make big moves in important categories such as health and efficiency. Open-mindedness, collaboration, creativity and standardization will all be needed to make progress. What is the role of the American Angus Association and Angus Genetics Inc. in leading this change? Listen to find out.   HOSTS: Miranda Reiman and Mark McCully GUESTS: John Dickinson and Troy Rowan John Dickinson is a fifth-generation Angus breeder and a former National Junior Angus Board (NJAB) chairman. A University of Illinois graduate and former regional manager for the American Angus Association, Dickinson often makes the trek between his cows in California and his home in Idaho. He is also a founding partner in Parnell Dickinson, Inc., a full-service marketing firm that works in all facets of promotion, management and cattle trade — both seedstock and commercial. Troy Rowan is an assistant professor of beef cattle genomics at the University of Tennessee– Knoxville. His research work brings together many types of “big data,” both phenotypic and genomic, to understand the genetics of economically relevant traits in beef cattle. He also has a part-time Extension appointment, making all that research applicable to the state's beef producers.  Troy grew up on a small Charolais operation in Southwest Iowa and received his undergraduate degree in biology from Creighton University. He earned his doctorate in genetics from the University of Missouri before coming to Tennessee in 2021.  RELATED CONTENT:  Exploring Next-Generation Phenotyping that Drives Commercial Profitability Don't miss news in the Angus breed. Lauren Comes is a farmer and FFA student from Southwest Iowa.  She has just completed her first, full year of FFA and is preparing to launch into even more FFA activities as sophomore.  Lauren farms with her father and brothers on their multi-generational farm, primarily raising commercial cattle, but also growing some row crops. In this interview Lauren and I spoke about the payoffs of farming.  As she talked about in the show, not every aspect of farming is pleasant or enjoyable, but they are necessary to keep the farm going.  And, eventually there is a payoff, and I don't mean money.  That payoff is different for all of us.  For Lauren it takes place in March when she gets to spend time with newborn calf and its mother in the barn.  For me, it is in mid-July at the end of a long day watching the sun go down and listening to the cattle graze.  Either way, there are those moments on the farm that make those unpleasant moments worth it. Lauren is pouring all of her energy in the FFA and farming.  She doesn't know what she wants to study after high school yet, but she knows it will be in agriculture.  And certainly there is wisdom built into her father's choice to have the kids hand stack, heavy bails of hay in the hot, Iowa sun.  There will be a day in Lauren's future that test her, possibly even makes her wonder if pursuing her career goals are worth it, and then she will remember stacking those bales and her motivation will return.  It works the same for all of us who have ever done an unpleasant, physically taxing job.  It pushes us forward and helps us get to where we are supposed to end up.

Listener, if you haven't heard of Dirt Road Candle Co, let me do the absolute honor of introducing you! Michelle Myers is a friend, small business mastermind buddy, and the woman behind the ONLY candle brand I have in my house.  In this episode we chat about Michelle's background and future in agriculture and her journey from making candles in her kitchen to building an amazing, authentic brand. Key Takeaways If you need a fairy godmother for your small business, please meet mine. Megan Knapp provides the virtual assisting services I need to keep my entire business organized. She's now accepting new clients, so reach out at meganknappva@gmail.com. Listener, I used a debit card for my business purchases for so long. I heard some buzz about cash back rewards, did some of my own research, and landed on the Capital One Spark Business Card. I love to build my credit and earn money back on purchases I would make anyway. You need to make the best financial decisions for YOUR business, but if you're looking for a great credit card for your small business, learn more here. Michelle has been on the pod before in my small business besties episode. I first started following Michelle on Instagram after her episode on the Rural Revival podcast. Michelle lives in rural Southwest Iowa on her fifth generation family farm. She currently lives in the home she was raised in! Michelle started making candles with a thrifted double boiler in her own kitchen. When candles took over her whole home (literally!) she built a combination candle shed/farm office.  Michelles candles started as a hobby but became popular gifts, so she opened an Etsy shop. Her early years were tough. Michelle commuted 50 minutes each way for her full time corporate job and would come home to pack orders. She said she kept her blinders on and focused on her goal. It made that crazy season doable.  Michelle is mostly self taught. She gets stuff done and encourages people to not over-research.  Community is so important to Michelle's success, especially as a product based business. Getting started in wholesale was a challenge initially. She says to remember that “no” can mean “just not right now.” She now sells online retail and wholesale and through Faire, an online wholesale marketplace (aka “Etsy for wholesale”). Michelle's brand is totally her. She really is just sharing her life. She loves and uses her products and adds to her line as a need arises. Her car freshies started when her friend's daughter cried when she couldn't bring her candle in the car!  Michelle is educating others about agriculture through her farm tours and open houses. Her fall open house is this August 4th and 5th. Connect with Michelle Michelle's branding is on. point. On Sunday the high will be close to 85 degrees, again with sunny skies, and the low will come in at 66 degrees. The Vinton Public Library, which lost two directors in two years amid community complaints over books, is now closed indefinitely as the interim director has left, too. https://www.thegazette.com/news/two-directors-quit-vinton-library-after-complaints-about-hirings-lgbtq-and-biden-books/ (The previous directors left )after city residents complained about the library's display of LGBTQ books and books about Democratic President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris. The library board met Tuesday to accept the resignation of Colton Neely, the interim director. Neely, formerly the library's children's director, will become a museum curator in Burlington. His last day — and the library's last day to stay open for now — was Friday. Vinton, a town of about 5,000 and the county seat of Benton County, will now be without its library for at least the next week as the library board attempts to configure hours to work around an absence of directors. Board members told the Gazette that the hiring process for another director is in process. The Iowa Department of Health and Human Services has closed the Taylor County lake to swimming as officials test for Naegleria fowleri, a single-cell, parasitic amoeba that can cause primary amebic meningoencephalitis. The brain infection is rare — with only 154 known cases in the United States since 1962 — but it's nearly always fatal. https://www.iowadnr.gov/Places-to-Go/State-Parks/Iowa-State-Parks/Lake-of-Three-Fires-State-Park (Lake of Three Fires), about 25 miles east of Clarinda, is an 85-acre lake popular with boaters and anglers, the Iowa Department of Natural Resources reports. The state park was dedicated in 1935 and is named after a group of Native Americans from the Potawatomi tribe, known as the “Fire Nation,” who once inhabited the area. The lake has frequently been https://www.thegazette.com/government-politics/going-swimming-at-a-state-park-beach-iowa-gets-tougher-on-toxins/ (closed to swimming) in past summers because of harmful algae that create toxic microcystins that can sicken swimmers. Algae are fed by phosphorus that washes from farm fields into streams and lakes. The Big Ten Conference is “not seeking applications” for any new members after its blockbuster additions of USC and UCLA, Iowa athletics director Gary Barta said in a Friday news conference. “I don't have a crystal ball, but at this point, I can tell you the Big Ten is still not seeking members,” Barta said. “I know the Big Ten is taking calls. … I'm not predicting that we would be adding any more in the near future.” Barta declined to say whether he'd support the addition of more schools from the west coast such as Oregon or Washington to the Big Ten. He did say he would likely support membership for Notre Dame, if the Big Ten finally managed to seduce them into the conference after years of pining. Barta said the primary concern now is solving logistical problems, such as travel challenges not just for football, but for nonrevenue sports as well.

I first discovered Sam Martin through an article that mentioned he and his families anhydrous ammonia business, Martin Custom Anhydrous, and that is what led me to invite him to be a guest on the show.  However, I wound up getting a lot more than I bargained for with this guest. Sam is a former chapter president, former Iowa State Vice-President and current Iowa State President.  He just obtained that lofty title in April of this year.  In addition to that, he is operating multiple supervised agricultural experiences including a cattle business, a sweet corn business and of course the family business of custom applying anhydrous ammonia all over Southwest Iowa. Sam and his family are the epitome of the farm families that I strive to profile on this show.  They are on farm ground that goes multiple generations deep, and they are always looking for a way to continue the legacy.  This is what led to them starting Martin Custom Anhydrous.  They took equipment that they already had and used it to serve farmers in their area, filling a need that existed.  They took the fact that their farm was smaller than others and turned that into a competitive advantage.  When many farmers were burnt out from being in the tractor more than them during they year, from farming more acres, they could step in and inject anhydrous ammonia for the farmers who didn't want to see the inside of a tractor again until spring.  It worked out great, and their business has really taken off. At the same time, the business is providing a way for Sam and his siblings to generate additional revenue to support the family farming operation and it creates an opportunity for each of them to return to the farm.  At the same time, Sam's mother, Sarah, is teaching agriculture at Shenandoah Community High School and brining in off-farm income in that manner. It is a very interesting story.  So much so that the length of my interview with Sam is about twice as long as a normal FFA interview. SUPERVISED AGRICULTURAL EXPERIENCE: Beef Production, Custom Fertilizer Application, Sweet Corn Sales HIGH SCHOOL: Shenandoah Community High School; Shenandoah, Iowa MASCOT: Mustangs FFA ADVISOR: Sarah Martin CONTACT INFORMATION FOR SAM MARTIN: Click on the picture below to be taken to the Shenandoah Community High School website: Sam's FFA Advisor's Email Address: martinsf@shenandoah.k12.ia.us  Shenandoah Community High School Telephone Number: 712-246-1581 FFA LINKS: National FFA Organization Supervised Agricultural Experiences (SAE's) Support FFA  Donate to FFA - One way that FFA students are able to start small businesses is through an FFA grant of $1,000.  In 2014, 141 FFA students received these grants.  With your donations, more students can get this head start - pay it forward. REASONS TO DONATE TO FFA: Only 2% of Americans grow and raise most of the food and livestock consumed by the other 98% as well as the rest of the world.  FFA is providing the needed education, training and resources to Americans that will carry that torch forward and insure that America continues to have inexpensive, quality food. Rural Communities will rely on entrepreneurship in the future for population growth and job creation.  The FFA is a major catalyst to that entrepreneurial growth. Farmers, ranchers and those working in agriculture give the rest of America incredible amounts of freedom because the search for food is as simple as going to the grocery store: “The future of American agriculture depends on the involvement and investment in America's youth, In order to prepare for the population of tomorrow, we need to encourage America's youth today, and show that careers in agriculture are profitable, rewarding, and vital.”. Those living near the Missouri River are accustomed to periodic devastating floods, but neighbors to the normally docile Nishnabotna River were caught unawares in 1958.  One woman was swept away in her front yard, but was able to grab onto a tree trunk being swept down with her. She passed to two more trees, and ended up nearly forty miles away from her home. Another group was known as the Lucky 13. Thirteen people clung to an oil tanker truck as they held two children out of the water and pushed away debris with a rake so that it didn't tip the truck. In this podcast Iowa historian and author joins Accidentally Historic host Dr. Richard Warner to tell the truly amazing story of this largely forgotten Southwest Iowa tragedy. Find more stories, books and podcasts by Mr. Brassard at www.johnbrassardjr.com
