The Fudge had no precedent. The band was totally unique. No rock group, up until that point, had ever so lugubriously s-t-r-e-t-c-h-e-d out well-known pop tunes like the Beatles “Eleanor Rigby” and “Ticket To Ride,” Curtis Mayfield‘s “People Get Ready,” Sonny & Cher‘s “Bang Bang” Rod Argent‘s “She‘s Not There” and, most famously, The Supremes‘ Motown classic “You Keep Me Hangin‘ On” to such hippie heights. With Mark Stein‘s mysterioso wash of Grand Guignol keyboard theatrics, Tim Bogert‘s amazing and trippy bass runs, and guitarist Vince Martell‘s era-happy soloing, Appice boomed like no other drummer in rock history. Their debut album still stands today as a Hard Rock classic. Vanilla Fudge went on to tour with Jimi Hendrix, Cream, and even had Led Zeppelin as an opening act.Post-Fudge, Bogert and Appice formed Cactus (seen as an influence on King‘s X and Van Halen). Drummer Carmine Appice (who is also a founding member of Vanilla Fudge and who has performed and/or recorded with Rod Stewart, Jeff Beck, Ozzy, and Pink Floyd, amongst others), Cactus is as heavy, bluesy, and uncompromising in its musical assault as they were 50-plus years ago.The band released its new album, Temple of Blues – Influences & Friends, June 7 on Cleopatra Records. The album merges the current members of Cactus with a big-name, star laden, ensemble of guest artists, all of whom have called the group among their biggest influences. Featured along with the current Cactus band is a who's who of blues and rock icons: Guitarists Joe Bonamassa, Ted Nugent, Pat Travers, Warren Hayes, Vernon Reid, Steve Stevens, Johnny A (The Yardbirds), Ty Tabor (King's X) and bassists Billy Sheehan (Mr. Big), Dug Pinnick (King's X) Tony Franklin (The Firm, Blue Murder), Phil Soussan (Ozzy Osbourne, Billy Idol), Rudy Sarzo (Quiet Riot, Ozzy Osbourne), Kenny Aaronson (ex- Joan Jet and The Yardbirds), as well as members of Government Mule, Vixen, Rainbow, Zebra, and Whitesnake. Vocalist Dee Snider of Twisted Sister appears on the band's remake of the Howlin' Wolf classic “Evil,” and Appice's bandmate in Vanilla Fudge Mark Stein turns in a powerful vocal on Little Richard's “Long Tall Sally.” A second version of “Guiltless Glider,” appears as a bonus track with former Judas Priest vocalist, Ripper Owens. In addition to Appice on drums and vocals on all tracks, original Cactus guitarist Jim McCarty also appears on Temple of Blues. The new album contains reimagined versions of some of Cactus's most legendary songs with the current band and guests putting a new spin on these bad-ass tunes that are among the heaviest of heavy blues-rock ever recorded. “The music of Cactus has always been steeped in the blues tradition,” says Appice, who wanted the group to re-visit its best songs within a modern rock approach to traditional blues. “We kept hearing from so many of our music celebrity friends how much Cactus influenced them and how they would love to be a guest on a Cactus album. Any band named Cactus has got to be raw and heavy. And that's just what these boys have been and are since the band's formation in 1970. Referred to when they first formed as the “American Led Zeppelin,” the band's reputation as supreme masters of relentless hard rock still precedes them and is well deserved. Cactus was formed in 1970 from the ashes of Vanilla Fudge when Appice and former Vanilla Fudge bassist Tim Bogert's plans to form a band with Jeff Beck were canceled when Beck had a nasty automobile accident that sidelined him for a lengthy period-of-time. The original lineup featured Appice, Bogert, former Mitch Ryder guitarist Jim McCarty and singer Rusty Day from Ted Nugent's Amboy Dukes. This lineup released three classic albums - Cactus (1970), One Way... or Another (1971), and Restrictions (1971) – all of which charted in the Billboard Top 200 and that still hold up well today. Carmine's playing has also been a huge influence on drummers including Joey Kramer (Aerosmith), Neal Peart (Rush), Phil Collins (Genesis), Brian Taylor (Queen), John Bonham (Led Zeppelin) and countless others. He was inducted into the Classic Drummer Hall of Fame in 2013 and the Modern Drummer Hall of Fame in 2014. His best-selling drum instruction book The Realistic Rock Drum Method was first published in 1972 and has since been revised and republished as The Ultimate Realistic Rock Drum Method. Rock Icon Carmine Appice drops by to chat about Vanilla Fudge history and their local tour dates in the NorthEast in May! Carmine was in various bands after Vanilla Fudge, including Cactus, Beck, Bogart and Appice, Rod Stewart, King Cobra, Blue Murder and even toured with Ozzy Osbourne! Vanilla Fudge was one of the first American groups to infuse psychedelia into a heavy rock sound to create “psychedelic symphonic rock” an eclectic genre which would, among its many offshoots, eventually morph into heavy metal. Although, at first, the band did not record original material, they were best known for their dramatic heavy, slowed-down arrangements of contemporary pop songs which they developed into works of epic proportion. Originally, Vanilla Fudge was a blue-eyed soul cover band called The Pigeons, formed in 1965 with organist, Mark Stein, bassist, Tim Bogert and drummer, Joey Brennan, and guitarist, vocalist and US Navy veteran, Vince Martell. They built a following by gigging extensively up and down the East Coast, and earned extra money by providing freelance in-concert backing for hit-record girl groups. In early 1966, the group recorded a set of eight demos that were released several years later as “While the World Was Eating Vanilla Fudge.”In 1968, Vanilla Fudge headlined the Fillmore West with Steve Miller. The group then performed “You Keep Me Hangin' On” on The Ed Sullivan Show, and released their second album, “The Beat Goes On.” Despite its avant-garde conceptualization and execution, the LP was a hit and climbed into the Top Twenty. That summer, Atco reissued “You Keep Me Hangin' On,” and the second time around it climbed into the Top Ten. It was followed by Renaissance, one of Vanilla Fudge's best albums, which also hit the Top Twenty. The band had three albums in the Top One Hundred, two of which were in the Top Twenty and one in the Top Five Single. The band toured with Jimi Hendrix, played dates equal billed or headlined with groups such as Cream, Janis Joplin, Jefferson Airplane, among many others; late in the year, they toured with the fledgling Led Zeppelin as their opening act.For more on Vanilla Fudge click on the linkhttps://vanillafudge.com

Vanilla Fudge went on to tour with Jimi Hendrix, Cream, and even had Led Zeppelin as an opening act.Cactus,Tightrope,TightropeCactus,Headed For A Fall,Tightropemakingascene,Carmine Appice,Cactus,Papa Was A Rolling Stone,TightropeCactus,"Suite 1 & 2: Everlong, All The Madmen",Tightrope

There are only a handful of bands who seem to jump fully formed onto the scene from their debut album, and one of these is certainly Lynyrd Skynyrd with their debut studio release (Pronounced 'Lĕh-'nérd 'Skin-'nérd). Lynyrd Skynyrd is arguably the band that defines Southern rock. Originally formed as “My Backyard” in 1964, the group would take the name “Lynyrd Skynyrd” in 1969, taking the name of a PE teacher (Leonard Skinner) at Robert E. Lee High School — a teacher whose strict enforcement of school policies against boys having long hair resulted in guitarist Gary Rossington dropping out of high school. In addition to guitarist Rossington, the band consisted of front man Ronnie Van Zant, guitarist Allen Collins, guitarist and bassist Ed King, keyboardist Billy Powell, and drummer Bob Burns.Despite the jam band feel from songs like “Freebird,” the band itself went into the studio with their songs quite perfected, and no improvisation was allowed. The album itself is terrific, and the band vaulted into an incredible popularity after opening for The Who during their Quadrophenia tour.Skynyrd would produce five studio albums before tragedy struck in a plane crash in 1977 that killed Van Zant, Steve Gaines, Cassie Gaines, assistant road manager Dean Kilpatrick, and the pilot and co-pilot. Other members of the band would suffer serious injuries.FOTS Bill Cook brings us this iconic Southern Rock album, which happened to be the first album he ever owned. I Ain't the OneThe opening track from the album was written by Gary Rossington and Ronnie Van Zant. It tells a story of a rich girl "tryin' to put a hook on me" when she was found to be pregnant, but "you know and I know, woman, I ain't the one."Gimme Three StepsThe lyrics that Ronnie Van Zant penned for this well known tale are a true story. Ronnie Van Zant had a fake ID, and made the rest of the band stay in the car while he went into The Little Brown Jug in Jacksonville, Florida. He was confronted by a man with a loaded 44 after dancing with his wife, Linda Lou. Van Zant ran out to the car and wrote the lyrics on the way back to their studio.Things Goin' OnThis deeper cut is appropriate for today. It is influenced by the Muscle Shoals sound, and has a great honky tonk keyboard sound. The song is a warning about social and environmental issues, and the politicians' uncaring attitudes. Tuesday's GoneA slower cut, this song has become iconic over time. Stories regarding the meaning of the lyrics conflict to a great degree. Some say it is about a girl who was left behind, while others say it is about a lifestyle that was lost as the band became famous. "Train roll on many miles from my home, see, I'm riding my blues away. Tuesday, you see, she had to be free but somehow I've got to carry on." ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:“Rock Around the Clock” by Bill Haley and the CometsThis song was part of the movie "American Graffiti," debuting in the theaters in August 1973 STAFF PICKS:“Why Should I Care” by Beck, Bogert, & AppiceBruce features a supergroup formed by Jeff Beck, Tim Bogert (bassist for Vanilla Fudge, Cactus), and Carmine Appice (drummer for Vanilla Fudge, Cactus, and Blue Murder). The song was written by Raymond Louis Kennedy, who also wrote "Sail On, Sailor" for The Beach Boys and "Isn't It Time" by The Babys. “Half Breed” by CherRob brings us a song about a biracial girl with a white father and a native American mother, and the lack of acceptance she found from both races. Cher had some Cherokee ancestry on her mother's side.“I Found Sunshine” by The Chi-LitesWayne's staff pick brings us the soulful sound of The Chi-Lites from Chi-town — Chicago. They were going to name the band "The Hi-Lites," but decided to make it "The Chi-Lites" in homage to their Chicago. The band charted 21 songs on the hot 100 throughout their career.“Bad, Bad Leroy Brown” by Jim CroceBill brings the staff picks home with acclaimed singer-songwriter Jim Croce's first hit. Leroy made a pass at Doris, and her husband beat him up. Leroy Brown was based on a guy that Croce met in the army. He went AWOL from the army, but was arrested when he came back for his check. Croce knew after listening to him that he would write a song about him one day. COMEDY TRACK:“Uneasy Rider” by The Charlie Daniels BandContinuing the storytelling theme, the late, great Charlie Daniels tells a story about getting stranded in a red neck bar in Mississippi.
