Her Triumph Over PTSD, In Marriage and Life. Special Episode. Trauma often leaves silent scars. Jen Satterly has emerged as a powerful voice for recovery, resilience, and hope. Her journey, from behind the camera lens to the front lines of healing, reveals a deeply personal and professional commitment to helping others overcome the lingering effects of PTSD, especially within the tight-knit communities of Special Forces veterans and their families. The Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show and Podcast episode is available for free on their website , Apple Podcasts , Spotify and most major podcast platforms. Jen's story begins not in uniform, but in creativity. As an award-winning advertising specialist and filmmaker, she was invited to embed with elite military units, capturing the essence of Special Operations training missions. Working alongside Navy SEALS, Green Berets, and Army Rangers, she documented the unfiltered reality of war simulation. But what she captured went far beyond the battlefield. It is also promoted across their Facebook , Instagram , LinkedIn , Medium and other platforms. “Being embedded in that world opened my eyes not only to the courage of our warriors,” Jen shared, “but also to the invisible wounds they carry, ones that follow them home.” It was during this time that Jen met Tom Satterly, a retired Command Sgt. Major with Delta Force, and a highly decorated combat veteran. Tom's career had taken him through the darkest corners of modern warfare, including the Battle of Mogadishu, portrayed in the Oscar-winning movie "Black Hawk Down". This brutal engagement marked the longest firefight since Vietnam and left permanent imprints on all who survived. Her Triumph Over PTSD, In Marriage and Life. Look for supporting stories about this and much more from Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show and Podcast in platforms like Medium , Blogspot and Linkedin . Tom's internal battle didn't end with his military service. Like many veterans, he struggled with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), and Jen quickly realized the emotional toll extended beyond the soldier to the entire family unit. Their marriage became both a test and a testament to what love and understanding could achieve in the face of trauma. Together, they founded the All Secure Foundation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping Special Operations warriors and their families heal from the trauma of war. Jen, now a certified health and wellness coach, stepped away from production to focus on helping others navigate life after combat. Their mission: to treat both the seen and unseen wounds of war. “PTS doesn't just affect the veteran,” Jen emphasized. “It's a battle that affects the entire household. Spouses and children experience what's called complex secondary PTSD. They become collateral damage in a war they never signed up for.” Available for free on their website and streaming on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and other podcast platforms. Jenn Satterly co-authored "Arsenal of Hope", a powerful book that delivers practical tools and raw, authentic stories from their life together. In it, Jen draws from both scientific research and lived experience, weaving together tactics to manage PTSD symptoms, from isolation and anxiety to anger and depression, through actionable advice and humor. Her Triumph Over PTSD, In Marriage and Life. “Arsenal of Hope isn't just a book,” Jen said. “It's a lifeline for anyone who feels like they're drowning.” Jen also founded Virago, a platform tailored specifically for women who face PTSD on the home front. Virago, which means a woman of strength, aims to educate, empower, and connect women who are often the silent strength behind our nation's heroes. Their story has resonated with thousands, especially through social platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn, where they regularly share resources, insights, and community events. Their podcast, also titled All Secure, is available on Apple and Spotify, and features unflinching conversations about trauma, healing, and personal transformation. You can listen to his stories and interview on our website for free in addition to platforms like Apple Podcasts and Spotify, and other major podcast platforms. In this episode of the Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show and Podcast listeners will find an unfiltered look into the reality of military marriages, life after combat, and practical recovery strategies. The Satterlys' efforts haven't gone unnoticed. The All Secure Foundation has earned top ratings from nonprofit watchdogs and now serves thousands of veterans and families. Their work fills a vital gap in the support system, especially for those in the elite Special Operations community who often face stigma around seeking help. Her Triumph Over PTSD, In Marriage and Life. Tom, who once led missions capturing war criminals and taking down high-value targets, including Saddam Hussein, now channels his warrior ethos into emotional recovery. He credits Jen not only as his wife but as his partner in healing. “She didn't just marry me,” Tom says. “She married the mission, and together, we're bringing light to a very dark place.” Follow the Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show and podcast on Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, Medium and most all social media platforms. The Battle of Mogadishu may have defined Tom's career, but it's the battles fought in the quiet corners of home, through connection, understanding, and advocacy, that now define the couple's legacy. And for Jen, the mission is clear: turn pain into purpose and help others find victory in their own war against PTSD. You can also follow them on Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, X and other Social Media Platforms. To follow Jen Satterly's journey, connect with her on Social Media like Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn, or visit AllSecureFoundation.org. Her voice, advocacy, and compassion continue to serve those still fighting their battles, long after the gunfire fades. Her Triumph Over PTSD, In Marriage and Life. In October 1993, US soldiers operating in the middle of a civil war in Somalia were on a mission to capture high ranking militia leaders linked to the fighting. But their extraction from the streets of Mogadishu was blocked by an unexpected counter attack from Somali warriors resulting in an all-out urban firefight. While the Army Rangers were pinned down in the streets, resistance fighters shot down two Black Hawk helicopters. What became known as the Battle of Mogadishu lasted for hours, with the US suffering heavy casualties and seeing a pilot taken prisoner. The failed mission altered the course of American involvement in the conflict. The Netflix series Surviving Black Hawk Down takes us back to the battlefield as told from the perspective of Americans on the ground and in the air. It also brings us the voices of Somali militants who took up arms and of civilians caught in the crossfire. It not only recounts what happened during those many hours of combat. It tackles what it meant for the soldiers who made it out alive.  In this episode of You Can't Make This Up, host Rebecca Lavoie interviews former US special forces soldiers and series subjects Tom Satterly and Brad Thomas. SPOILER ALERT! If you haven't watched title yet, make sure to add it to your watch-list before listening on.  Dig deeper into all of your favorite Netflix documentaries and films at Tudum.com! This week they go even further into what happened during the Battle of Mogadishu. Listen to more from Netflix Podcasts.

Transitioning from military to civilian life often leaves veterans feeling lost and purposeless. This struggle, while common for former service members, is relatable to anyone facing major life changes. However, hope exists. Veterans can rediscover their purpose through support networks, therapy, education, and tailored job opportunities. By embracing new challenges and using their unique skills, those feeling drifting can build meaningful lives, transforming past experiences into foundations for a fulfilling future. In this episode, meet Tom Satterly, a former Delta Force operator who shares his raw, unfiltered experiences of hitting rock bottom, including multiple suicide attempts, before finding a path to healing. Tune in as Matt and Tom dive deep into the often-overlooked struggles of military veterans transitioning to civilian life. They explore the silent battles many face: PTSD, addiction, and the loss of identity that comes with leaving the service. Listen in as we talk about mental health, managing relationships, self-forgiveness, education, and more! Quotes: "Everybody has their part, and nobody should minimize their part and put themselves down or minimize anybody else's." – Tom Satterly "It's not just the balance; it's optimization. It's defining for ourselves what things are worth optimizing." – Matt Beaudreau "You had to become something else to survive. You had to become the monster to fight the monster. That monster doesn't just go away. You have to have the tools to work with the monster. And one thing is to acknowledge that monster that's in you." – Tom Satterly Takeaways: Approach mental health proactively, like performing preventive maintenance on valuable equipment. Address psychological issues early and consistently to maintain optimal well-being. When combating addictions or destructive behaviors, actively cultivate positive alternatives, replacing harmful patterns with constructive activities or beneficial skills. In relationships, prioritize empathy and understanding over the need to be right. Practice active listening to comprehend your partner's perspective fully before rushing to solutions. This approach fosters deeper connections and more effective problem-solving. Cultivate self-forgiveness as a critical component of personal growth. Distinguish between guilt, which focuses on specific actions, and shame, which attacks self-worth. Concentrate on learning from past mistakes rather than dwelling on them, using guilt constructively to guide future behavior while rejecting the paralyzing effects of shame. Conclusion: Cultivating mental health and strong relationships requires a proactive approach. By addressing mental issues early, practicing active listening, recognizing our different personas, replacing negative habits with positive ones, and practicing self-forgiveness, we can build resilience and lead more fulfilling lives. These strategies help us navigate life's challenges, strengthen our connections with others, and foster continuous personal growth. Implementing these practices allows us to cope with difficulties and thrive in various aspects of our lives.

Well, this was a big one!! The power couple of the United States Special Forces. Tom spent 20 years in The US Military and service in SFOD Delta ( known as Delta Force) and has gone from fighting in the Battle Of Mogadishu  ( where the movie Blackhawk Down came from) to helping people fight their inner demons alongside his wife Jen at allsecurefoundation.org . This was an amazing show talking about the journey from post traumatic stress to Post Traumatic Growth, and it was phenomenal to hear Tom and Jen's personal story as to how their relationship started. We spoke about the book “The Body Keeps the Score” finding your tribe and leaning on them,  and how to heal on the homefront.  Tom and Jen hold 4 day Special Forces veterans couple's retreats, which is absolutely brilliant because the secondary effect of post traumatic stress on the spouse or partner can be crippling to a relationship, and as humans are such social beings, we simply do not heal in isolation.
One of the most eye opening moments of the show was Tom speaking about his greatest healing moment and I won't spoil it for you, but it brought out his compassion and empathy to a level he had not known he was capable of before. Overall this was a fun, rare and enlightening talk with 2 powerful and successful individuals who are truly on this planet to help others. Chris is a work in progress. And that compass's progress is in the right direction after a lot of setbacks and detours. Part of his mission now is to reduce the stigma of getting help for PTS, PTSD, Mental Health and preventing Veteran Suicide- much like a former guest Erick Miyares is working towards.

We spoke very openly about many chapters of his life, from joining the Military, to Selection, To the Unit, Transition to civilian life with TBI, PTSD, Depression, Sleep Disorders, and chemical dependency.  Having navigated both traditional and nontraditional paths to recovery, Chris is an advocate for veteran mental health and wellness, veterans helping veterans, and finding ways to recover using the healing properties of outdoor pursuits.

I loved hearing Chris speak about routine, exercise, nutrition and outdoors being the keys to his recovery and  we had a great chat about CURING INSOMNIA and fixing sleep routine so he could climb out the that dark, overwhelming place so many of us know of, or know others are in or have been. Christopher VanSant is a retired 20+ year Special Operations Veteran. Mr. VanSant's service includes time in the 75th Ranger Regiment, 3rd Infantry Division, the 82nd Airborne Division, and 11 combat deployments as both a Team Member and Team Leader in 1st Special Forces Operational Detachment-Delta (Delta Force).

During the latter part of his career, Chris was responsible for developing, procuring, and equipping the Army's Green Berets.   Chris retired from the Army in 2015, at which point he transitioned to civilian life and became the Chief Operating Officer for Tyr Tactical, LLC. Tyr is a US manufacturer of Body Armor, Ballistic Shields, Tactical Nylon products, Clothing, and K9 equipment. Having spent nearly 27 years as an end user, combat developer, and manufacturer of combat equipment, he Utilizes that experience to provide Defense related businesses with product development, business development, and government acquisition consultation.  Chris's career as a consultant allows him to maintain a healthy work life balance, pursue his passions, and support various veteran charitable endeavors. Overcoming many obstacles and sustaining numerous injuries throughout his military career, Chris's biggest challenge was overcoming his aforementioned hurdles.  He and his wife Robin (His “Life Team Mate” ) support various veteran charitable causes and it was an absolute pleasure speaking with him and bringing this amazing story to you, the listener. Tom Satterly is a former Command Sergeant Major from the US Army's Delta Force, also known as The Unit. During his 20 years at The Unit, Tom fought in and led countless high-profile missions including the capture of Saddam Hussein and the Battle of Mogadishu, also known as Black Hawk Down, which was the longest sustained firefight since Vietnam. That 18-hour firefight ended with Tom, along with several of his teammates, running the Mogadishu Mile to safety.Tom's career sounds like a Hollywood script, and he's literally been portrayed in movies because of it. It's hard to imagine doing more in the world of special operations than he did. But that lifestyle comes at a cost. In the early days of Tom and Jen's relationship, Tom was struggling with the physical, mental, and emotional toll of his two decades of intense training and combat. It nearly broke him, and it nearly destroyed his relationship with Jen. Tom and Jen met while Jen was working at a special operations training company. She noticed a pattern that was shared by the Navy SEALs, Green Berets, and Army Rangers that she was working with. That pattern was the same one that was affecting Tom, and in turn, affecting her. She wanted to know what could be done to help these special operators deal with the effects of post-traumatic stress, and what avenues there were for getting that help. So, she delved into health and wellness research and certifications in order to answer both parts of that question. She learned about post-traumatic stress, she learned what could be done about it, and she began doing the helping. As she and Tom worked to heal as individuals and repair their relationship, they began helping others to do the same. They founded All Secure Foundation in 2017 to help special operators and their families navigate the maze of treatments and modalities of healing from post-traumatic stress. They worked with hundreds of operators and their families and soon became a provider of education, awareness, and programs. On this episode, we talk with Tom and Jen about their story and All Secure Foundation.  Resources and links:All Secure Foundation Tom's highly-recommended book, All Secure (amazon affiliate link)

On October 3, 1993, a US Army operation in Mogadishu, Somalia, which was supposed to take 45 minutes, lasted for more than 18 hours. Delta Force operators had surgically and swiftly taken high value targets supporting warlord Mohamed Farrah Aydid into custody. However, when a Black Hawk helicopter crashed, the original plan to leave the city had to be abandoned - and then another Black Hawk went down. Tragedy ensued in the form of the longest sustained firefight since Vietnam. HBH is deeply honored to welcome US Army Delta Force Command Sergeant Major Tom Satterly, and his amazing wife Jen. Off the battlefield, the Satterly's are just as heroic. They are remarkably open about their own mental health struggles and now run the All Secure Foundation, which has helped thousands of combat families with PTSD and other mental health issues which arise from the complex toll of military service.Even as the overnight battle in Mogadishu was winding down, the violence was still incredibly dangerous, to the extent that Tom and a small group of remaining soldiers could not be driven or air-lifted out of the city. As depicted near the end of the 2001 blockbuster movie ‘Black Hawk Down' directed by Ridley Scott, Tom and that small group had no choice but to run through RPG and AK-47 fire and out of downtown to safe harbor. That specific action is so legendary in military circles that every year around early October current and former soldiers gather to run what is now known as the ‘Mogadishu Mile' to pay homage almost 30 years later. To this day, the public knows very little about the US military's most secretive and advanced Special Operations Unit, which goes by the official name of US Army First Special Forces Operational Detachment-Delta (1st SFOD-D). It is most commonly known as Delta Force, where Tom Satterly spent 20 of his 25 years in the Army. Tom led hundreds of missions, including Operation Red Dawn, which captured none other than Saddam Hussein. He is the recipient of numerous medals including 5 Bronze Stars, with 2 for Acts of Valor. Tom and Jen Satterly are a true inspiration and we thank them for their groundbreaking work, commitment and courage. If you are suffering from PTSD or know someone who is, please look into the All Secure Foundation for help. On this episode I am talking with former Delta Force operator, Tom Satterly, and his wife, Jen Satterly. Tom spent 20 years with Delta Force, and like some of the other guests I have had on, Tom was part of the Battle of Mogadishu, which many people know as the Black Hawk Down incident. Jen was a photographer assigned to document special operations when she met Tom. The two were eventually married. Together, they run the All Secure Foundation, which helps victims of PTSD in various ways, including retreats; which we get into on the episode. Tom has written a book called All Secure, and Jen has written a book called Arsenal of Hope, both of which I highly recommend you check out. Command Sgt. Major (ret.) Tom Satterly served in the Army for 25 years, 20 of those years were spent in the military's most secretive and elite Special Operations unit, Delta Force. As an Operator and CSM, Tom fought in and lead countless high profile military missions including Operation Red Dawn (Saddam Hussein's capture) and the Battle of Mogadishu (Black Hawk Down). Although the physical, mental, and emotional toll of war had compounded over the years, Tom never faced his Post-Traumatic Stress symptoms and in 2013 he nearly ended his life. Had it not been a text from his now wife, Jen, he would have joined the 22 veterans who commit suicide every single day. The Satterly's founded All Secure Foundation in August 2017 as a resource library for helping warriors and their families navigate the maze of treatments and modalities of healing from PTS. They have worked individually with hundreds of warriors and their families and soon became more than a referral website but also a provider of education, awareness, and programs for healing. It's not easy to talk about marriage difficulties in servicemembers' and veterans' families, or the battles of the mind, body, and spirit that accompany those problems. But I had a blast talking with Tom and Jen. The conversation ranges from examinations of manhood and femininity, expectation management for both spouses and servicemembers, and some casual put-downs of accountants and cat lovers. It's an eye-opening conversation about how to integrate relationship health into the warfighter's life - and a reminder about the reasons warfighting is often a single man's game - with a couple that has been through an awful lot and come out the other end smiling. https://allsecurefoundation.org/ (All Secure Foundation) https://allsecurefoundation.org/shop/all-secure-a-special-operations-soldiers-fight-to-survive-on-the-battlefield/ (All Secure) by Tom Satterly https://allsecurefoundation.org/shop/arsenal-of-hope-tactics-for-taking-on-ptsd-together/ (Arsenal of Hope) by Jen Satterly https://allsecurefoundation.org/shop/ (Shop All Secure Foundation) Follow All Secure Foundation https://www.instagram.com/allsecurefoundation/ (here).

Tom and Jenn Satterly are all about helping veterans and their families. Tom is a retired CSM Delta Force and Jen Satterly was previously embedded in Realistic Training Missions with Special Operations units as Director of Film and Photography. When their relationship began, Tom was not in a good place mentally, but could not figure out what was causing his anger and excessive drinking. He finally had a therapist explain to him that he was suffering from PTS and needed to deal with it. From that point on, things slowly began to change and as he began to help others, he truly found his calling. Their mission is to help Veterans returning home but more importantly to support the family. They know that helping the family members is a huge piece of the puzzle. Learn more about their foundation and their Books below:Command Sgt. Major (ret.) Tom Satterly served in the Army for 25 years, 20 of those years were spent in the military's most secretive and elite Special Operations unit, Delta Force. As an Operator and CSM, Tom fought in and lead countless high profile military missions including Operation Red Dawn (Saddam Hussein's capture) and the Battle of Mogadishu (Black Hawk Down) which was the longest sustained firefight since Vietnam. That 18-hour firefight ended with Tom, along with several of his team mates, running the Mogadishu Mile to safety.Although the physical, mental, and emotional toll of war had compounded over the years, Tom never faced his Post-Traumatic Stress symptoms and in 2013 he nearly ended his life. Had it not been a text from his now wife, Jen, he would have joined the 22 veterans who commit suicide every single day.As Director of Film and Photography of an elite Special Operations training company, Jen embedded with Navy Seals, Green Berets, and Army Rangers in (RMTs) Realistic Military Training exercises sometimes for weeks at a time. During this time, she began to notice the same symptoms Tom was battling and began to ask questions. What was being done? Who is helping our warriors on the homefront heal? Who is helping the families with secondary PTS? She didn't like the answers and became certified in health and wellness to better understand PTS and the body.Tom and Jen decided something had to be done and the work they did together training and preparing warriors to fight overseas turned into a mission of helping warriors and their families fight the silent war and to heal from it on the homefront. In 2019 ASF launched one of the only programs in the country for warrior couples to tackle PTS and Secondary PTS together with Emotionally Focused Therapy through their Special Operations Warrior Couples Retreat Workshops. The program was so successful that they filled all 6 of the retreat workshops in 2020 in a single day. With additional funding, more workshop retreats will be added (to donate to or sponsor a retreat, please visit our DONATE page). In 2020, All Secure Foundation has also began working directly with Special Operation units and the FRG (Family Readiness Group) by providing PTS Resiliency training at bases across the United States. In addition to working with the DOD, Tom and Jen also speak across the country to provide awareness and education on PTS including Congress, the Senate Committee on Veteran Affairs, The White House Communication Agency, USAA, Lockheed Martin, NAMI, and countless veteran organizations.https://allsecurefoundation.org/https://www.linkedin.com/in/jen-satterly-0b5b588/https://www.linkedin.com/in/tom-satterly-85088b29/https://allsecurefoundation.org/shop/all-secure-a-special-operations-soldiers-fight-to-survive-on-the-battlefield/https://allsecurefoundation.org/shop/arsenal-of-hope-tactics-for-taking-on-ptsd-together/
