In this episode, the gang are back together for the first time since last year, to chat to Julian about his brand new venture: Sake House!Sake House is Osaka's newest Sake Bar, and it's something Julian has been working towards, or at least dreaming about, for some time.Located in the popular area of Umeda, but a little out of the hard hustle and bustle, Sake House is a small bar with a big heart and an excellent sake menu - not to mention its fabulous host. In addition to some amazing sake, and other beverages, hand selected by Julian, guests can enjoy a small menu of tasty treats ~ with things like saganaki, blue cheese and sake kasu pizza, and a dish with hummus, being some of the current items on the menu. By the time you listen to this episode, the menu will most likely have changed a little, as will some of the sake, but that's what will keep his guests coming back for more - with each visit being a new and delicious experience.Only 3 weeks into it's existence, Sake House aims to be a venue for locals and tourists alike. A place where everyone can feel comfortable and confident ordering, drinking and exploring the world of Nihonshu. No stranger to many already in the sake industry, Julian has a wealth of knowledge and has been a passionate advocate for sake for many years. Needless to say, this venture was a long time coming - but it's finally here, and we are super excited to see how it evolves. If you're in, or planning to be in Osaka, be sure to pop in and say hi to Julian at Sake House.Congratulations, Julian - from all of us at TWTT.You can follow this podcast and its hosts on IG...TWTT Podcast: @tastewiththetojiSimone: @sakemistressMaki: @sake.amataJulian: @sakeadvocateand don't forget to check out Julian's new bar on IG: @sakehouse_osakaThis episode was recorded on 2 Mar 2025A huge thank you to our subscribers at PatreonMore information about Taste with the Toji - The Project can be found on our website: https://tastewiththetoji.com/Music by: Kazuyoshi Sato (Koikawa Shuzo)Sake House - OsakaAddress: B1, 1 Chome-2-8 Sonezaki, Osaka, 530-0057, JapanApprox 10min from JR Osaka and the Midosuji Subway and approx 6 min from Higashi Umeda Station. From Kyoto it's less than 10 minutes from Yodoyabashi Station on the Keihan Line.IG: @sakehouse_osaka

Kiley Umeda can hold her breath for almost four minutes while freediving to spearfish in the clear waters of the pacific ocean near her home on the big island of Hawaii. She has also dove 186 feet deep on a single breath. Kiley has helped me on my journey to learn the sport of freediving and spearfishing and I finally made the trip to Hawaii to spend two days diving and hunting fish and octopus with her. Spearfishing requires a mastery over the hunter's body and mind. A dive of 30 seconds in 25' of water feels like an eternity to me at this stage, and who better to learn from than one of the greatest in the World.  After the second day we sat under a tree  on the lava to record this show. I lost the cover for my microphone and had to cut the fingers off one of my gloves to keep the wind out of the mic so I sound a bit muffled, but y'all aren't here to listen to me. Spearfishing isn't just for tropical saltwater anymore, and we go through what you need to to swim and hunt fish in the waters where you live. Catalyst is a Creative Industries podcast, from Chapman University. Each episode features Chapman students who have completed a Podcasting course through the Center for Creative and Cultural Industries at the university. Students who had no podcasting experience or technical ability in the genre before taking the course were able to contribute all the segments to Catalyst this season with the goal being that they will take this ‘hands-on' experience and carry it over to the launching of their very own series. Each episode of Season 11 will feature one to two different interviews conducted by CCI students, exploring different aspects of the Creative and Cultural Industries. Paige Brooks starts this week's episode of Catalyst with an interview of veteran performer and choreographer Brittany Barney.  The pair discuss the array of opportunities one can find within a singular creative industry, Barney's process when it comes to choreography and how culture and history impact artistry. They also reflect on what success looks like in a performance-based industry, where professional rejection is part of the game and how at times it is necessary to adjust a career plan to accommodate reality. Still Barney is hopeful that the information she imparts in the interview will inspire creatives, and that the career-development timeline she shares will be a particularly useful tool. The second interview of the week stars Azuki Umeda and her career journey as a choreographer, dancer, and teacher as she talks with Elle Holland. Umeda is known for her unique and intricate movement style within her choreography which has gotten her global recognition. She shares insight into her inspirations and the process that goes into developing this movement vocabulary. Umeda explains how she got started in choreography and how at a young age she developed an ability to see music in new ways. The pair discuss how her Japanese cultural background shapes her creative voice and her approach as a teacher. Umeda also elaborates on her current work “How I Became Kinder and Kinder” and on her company Authenticity Dance Co, and they conclude with the topic of the future by sharing Umeda's dance company's upcoming opportunities and performances.

Abstract: ACTIN DEPOLYMERIZING FACTOR (ADF) is a conserved protein that regulates the organization and dynamics of actin microfilaments. Eleven ADFs in the Arabidopsis thaliana genome are grouped into four subclasses, and subclass I ADFs, ADF1-4, are all expressed throughout the plant. Previously, we showed that subclass I ADFs function in the regulation of the response against powdery mildew fungus as well as in the regulation of cell size and endoreduplication. Here, we report a new role of subclass I ADFs in the regulation of nuclear organization and gene expression. Through a microscopic observation of epidermal cells in mature leaves, we found that the size of chromocenters in both adf4 and transgenic lines where expression of subclass I ADFs are downregulated (ADF1-4Ri) was reduced compared with that of wild-type Col-0. A. thaliana possesses eight ACTIN genes, among which ACT2, -7, and -8 are expressed in vegetative organs. The chromocenter size in act7, but not in the act2/8 double mutant, was enlarged compared with that in Col-0. Microarray analysis revealed that 1,818 genes were differentially expressed in adf4 and ADF1-4Ri. In particular, expression of 22 nucleotide-binding leucine-rich repeat (NLR) genes, which are involved in effector-triggered plant immunity, was reduced in adf4 and ADF1-4Ri. qRT-PCR confirmed the altered expressions shown with microarray analysis. Overall, these results suggest that ADF regulates various aspects of plant physiology through its role in regulation of nuclear organization and gene expression. The mechanism how ADF and ACTIN regulate nuclear organization and gene expression is discussed. Copy rights belong to original authors. Spearfishing is my favorite thing that I'm bad at. I'm absolutely fascinated by it, and how similar it is to bow hunting. Today, we've got a double header for you, two interviews with two different spearfishing experts, Steph Schuldt and Kiley Umeda. Steph gave up the corporate life, sold all her belongings, bought a sailing catamaran, and now lives in the Bahamas where she's in the water at least 5 days a week. Steph is a freediving and spearfishing instructor, and happens to hold 7 world spearfishing records, including the all-time (for men and women) pole spear wahoo record. Kiley Umeda lives in Hawaii where she's been spearfishing for 23 years, and hunting since she was 10. Kiley is the owner of Aimrite International, a world renowned speargun manufacturing company, and spends much of her time building high quality spearguns. Spearfishing might be a totally foreign sport to some listeners out there, but trust me, you're going to want to try it after hearing from these badass women. Abstract: Ca2+/calmodulin-dependent protein kinase II (CaMKII) has long been central in synaptic plasticity research. CaMKII is a dodecameric serine/threonine kinase that has been essentially conserved across metazoans for over a million years. While the mechanisms of CaMKII activation are well studied, its "behavior" at the molecular level has remained unobserved. Here, high-speed atomic force microscopy was used to visualize the activity-dependent structural dynamics of rat/hydra/C. elegans CaMKII in various states at nanometer resolution. Among the species, rat CaMKII underwent internal kinase domain aggregation in an activity-dependent manner and showed a higher tolerance to dephosphorylation by phosphatase. Our findings suggest that mammalian CaMKII has evolutionarily acquired a new structural form and a tolerance to phosphatase to maintain robust CaMKII activity for proper neuronal function. Abstract: Movies depicting certain types of motion often provoke uncomfortable symptoms similar to motion sickness, termed visually induced motion sickness (VIMS). VIMS generally evolves slowly during the viewing of a motion stimulus and, when the stimulus is removed, the recovery proceeds over time. Recent human neuroimaging studies have provided new insights into the neural bases underlying the evolution of VIMS. In contrast, no study has investigated the neural bases underlying the recovery from VIMS. Study of the recovery process is critical for the development of a way to promote recovery and could provide further clues for understanding the mechanisms of VIMS. We thus investigated brain activity during the recovery from VIMS with functional connectivity (FC) magnetic resonance imaging. We found enhanced recovery-related FC patterns involving brain areas such as the insular, cingulate, and visual cortical regions, which have been suggested to play important roles in the emergence of VIMS. These regions also constituted large interactive networks. Furthermore, the increase in FC was correlated with the subjective awareness of recovery for the following 5 pairs of brain regions: insula-superior temporal gyrus, claustrum-left and right inferior parietal lobules, claustrum-superior temporal gyrus, and superior frontal gyrus-lentiform nucleus. Considering the previous findings on the functions of these regions and the present findings, it is suggested that the increase in FC may reflect brain processes such as enhanced interoceptive awareness to one's own bodily state, a neuroplastic change in visual processing circuits, and/or the maintenance of visual spatial memory. Show #811   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Tuesday 16th June 2020. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to.   Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.   Welcome to a new Patreon producer NICHOLAS MILLER   MODEL S LONG RANGE PLUS: BUILDING THE FIRST 400-MILE ELECTRIC VEHICLE The freedom to travel anywhere is critical to Tesla’s mission. Since the introduction of our 265-mile Model S in 2012, we’ve continued to revisit every aspect of the design to deliver the longest-range and highest-performance electric vehicles on the road.   Starting today, all North American Model S Long Range Plus vehicles have an official EPA-rated range of 402 miles, representing a nearly 20% increase in range when compared to a 2019 Model S 100D with the same battery pack design.   This significant achievement reflects Tesla’s obsession with efficiency and energy frugality, and is realized through several changes, both iterative and transformational, in core hardware and system architecture development by the Tesla engineering, design and production teams. These changes went into production earlier this year when we first started manufacturing Model S Long Range Plus at our factory in Fremont, California. All Model S Long Range Plus vehicles will receive the new 402-mile rating.   Significant Mass Reduction - Several lessons from the engineering design and manufacturing of Model 3 and Model Y have now been carried over to Model S and Model X.   New “Tempest” Aero Wheels and Tires -  8.5 inch-wide aero wheels reduce aerodynamic drag compared to the previous wheels on Model S Long Range, and when paired with a new custom tire specifically engineered to reduce rolling resistance, add a 2% improvement to overall range.   Increased Drive Unit Efficiency - Further improvements to the gearbox in our front permanent magnet synchronous reluctance motors shared with Model 3 and Model Y have resulted in a further increase of 2% more range while driving on the highway.   Maximizing Regenerative Braking - To bring the car to a stop smoothly, regenerative braking now works at a lower speed and deceleration rate.   THe Verge says: " On Tuesday, the EPA told CNBC that it approved the new range estimate after receiving data from Tesla gathered during an in-house test. EPA approved the new label value based on a review of the testing protocols and data submitted by Tesla and found it was complete and accurate. The improvements result in “a nearly 20% increase in range when compared to a 2019 Model S 100D with the same battery pack design,” Tesla says."   https://www.theverge.com/2020/6/16/21292629/tesla-model-3-long-range-plus-epa-rating-aerodynamic-wheels-mass-reduction-efficiency   TESLA AND PANASONIC AGREE ON THREE-YEAR BATTERY DEAL "Tesla Inc. (NASDAQ: TSLA) has entered a three-year deal with Panasonic Corp. (OTC: PCRFY) under which the Japanese battery maker will manufacture and supply lithium-ion battery cells at Tesla’s Gigafactory in Nevada." reports Yahoo Finance: "The deal is effective from April 1, 2020, until March 31, 2023, and covers the terms of production capacity commitments by Panasonic and purchase volume commitments by Tesla over the first two years of the agreement. Last month Panasonic’s CFO, Hirokazu Umeda, said they were seeing “strong demand” for Tesla’s battery cells. Umeda signaled interest in expanding the Nevada factory. Panasonic and Tesla’s relationship has been worsening over the past years and the automaker is moving towards making its own batteries."   https://finance.yahoo.com/news/tesla-panasonic-agree-three-battery-051442193.html   Teslarati notes: "Ultimately, the company’s goal is to end a shortage of batteries and begin a massive production phase of lithium-ion cells that will keep up with the increasing demand for Tesla’s electric cars. After Elon Musk announced last week that it would bring its highly-anticipated Semi to “volume production,” it is evident that Tesla’s cell shortage is coming to a close, and the company is on the brink of price parity with gas cars."   RIMAC C_TWO PROTOTYPE PRODUCTION SPEEDS UP WITH SECOND ASSEMBLY LINE "Rimac’s recently opened factory in Croatia will be a bit busier going forward. Today, the bespoke electric hypercar maker announced that adding a second production line is “the next stage in the development of the C_Two.” The new line will help the company accelerate C_Two prototype production, cutting the build time in half to around five weeks. This will eventually let the company build four production vehicles a month when operating at full capacity." according to MOtor1: "The automaker promised a stunning all-electric hypercar that’d develop 1,914 horsepower (1,427 kilowatts). Rimac continues to guarantee a top speed of 258 miles per hour (412 kilometers per hour) with a zero to 62-mph (100-kph) time of 1.9 seconds. A sprint to 100 mph (161 kmh) from a standstill will happen in 4.3 seconds."   https://www.motor1.com/news/429090/rimac-c-two-second-production-line/     SPAIN'S $4.2 BILLION AID PLAN TO SUPPORT THE AUTO INDUSTRY "Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez has announced a 3.7 billion euro ($4.2 billion) aid package for the hard-hit auto industry to promote the production and sale of cleaner cars." reports NY Times: "he Spanish government will spend 250 million euros on cash-for-clunker schemes to encourage drivers to buy new low-emission and electric cars in 2020. Drivers will get up to 4,500 euros to buy a new, cleaner car when they scrap a 20-year-old car. Dealerships will give up to 1,000 euros in additional discounts. Spain will spend another 100 million euros upgrading official vehicles and will let regional authorities spend 100 million euros of their budget surpluses to upgrade their own fleets."   https://www.nytimes.com/reuters/2020/06/15/world/europe/15reuters-health-coronavirus-spain-autos-factbox.html   TESLA MODEL Y SPOTTED IN HOLLAND Hans: Who said that Model Y wouldn't be seen in Europe before 2021? Well, today at Supercharger Dordrecht. Will they speed this up too?   Dutch green test drive plates. User Martin notes that the Model Y could be a private car imported for other car makers or companies to rent out. Charging? Not on Superchargers? An adapater.   GM'S MARY BARRA OPTIMISTIC ON U.S. DEMAND, CHINA, EV PROFITABILITY " General Motors Co's top executive struck an optimistic note on Monday about U.S. demand for new vehicles despite the coronavirus pandemic, and the ability to sell electric vehicles at a profit, especially in China." according to Autoblog: "Consultancy AlixPartners has predicted that major automakers face a "profit desert" as they invest heavily in developing electric vehicles despite consumers' ongoing preference for gas-guzzling cars, especially in the U.S. market. When asked about that prediction, Barra said, "We are very excited with the portfolio of EVs we have coming. We are going to continue on that path. We have a strong future ahead, and I don't see that desert."   https://www.autoblog.com/2020/06/15/gm-ceo-mary-barra-new-vehicle-demand-electric-cars-china/   BMW I8 HYBRID SPORTSCAR PRODUCTION ENDS AFTER SIX YEARS "Nearly six years after its introduction in the international markets, BMW has decided to pull the plug on the i8 plug-in hybrid sports car. The line’s termination was originally slated to be in April, which was delayed due to the shutdown of the plants due to the COVID-19 pandemic." says MSN Autos: The car’s final example rolled out of the factory, finished in a unique Portimao Blue, a one-off shade to commemorate its purpose. The car laid the foundation to our imagination of an ideal futuristic car that came with a radical design. It was powered by a 1.5-litre three-cylinder engine that worked in tandem with an electric motor to churn out a combined power of 374hp."   https://www.msn.com/en-in/autos/news/bmw-i8-hybrid-sportscar-production-ends-after-six-years-final-unit-rolled-out-wearing-blue-paint/ar-BB15yHfh   ELECTRIC CARS TO GET GREEN NUMBER PLATES "Owners of electric cars across the UK will be able to fit their vehicles with green number plates from this autumn, a move that is set to both further raise the profile of battery-powered cars, and pave the way for future incentive schemes that will encourage the take-up of electric vehicles." reports Hugo at Auto Express: "Rather than being a fully green plate, EVs will have conventional white and yellow plates on their front and rear, but the plates will feature a green vertical flash on their left-hand side. The plates will, according to the DfT, allow local authorities to “design and put in place new policies to incentivise people to own and drive” electric cars. While details are thin on the ground, the Government suggests reduced parking rates or exemption from emission-zone charges are two incentives councils might consider."   https://www.autoexpress.co.uk/news/104561/electric-cars-get-green-number-plates   QUESTION OF THE WEEK   Tell me about a conversation you had with someone where you introduced them to EVs   I want to say a heartfelt thank you to the 231 patrons of this podcast whose generosity means I get to keep making this show, which aims to entertain and inform thousands of listeners every day about a brighter future. Now, Gigafactory 1, based in Nevada, could see an expansion." says Roadshow by CNET: "Panasonic Chief Financial Officer Hirokazu Umeda specifically said the company was "in discussions right now" to expand work at the facility. Although the company is no longer Tesla's exclusive battery provider (the company works with LG Chem in China), the partnership has blossomed in recent years and recorded two profitable quarters. Umeda mentioned demand is beyond the current capacity of 35 gigawatts per year."   And from that Reuters report, they say: "Umeda hinted that Panasonic has been developing new batteries with Tesla. “We will be working to improve materials and technologies throughout this financial year,” he said. The Tesla battery business provided a bright spot in Panasonic’s otherwise grim earnings, hit by plant closures and supply chain disruptions for its laptops, washing machines, automotive components and factory equipment. Panasonic has decided to exit solar cell production at Tesla’s New York plant this year. It also decided not to build a new battery plant for Tesla in China. The U.S. car maker has entered into partnerships with South Korea’s LG Chem Ltd (051910.KS) and China’s CATL"   https://www.cnet.com/roadshow/news/tesla-gigafactory-nevada-reopen-production-elon-musk   https://www.reuters.com/article/us-panasonic-results-idUSKBN22U0MF   ELECTRIC VEHICLE SALES TO FALL 18% IN 2020 "Sales of electric passenger vehicles are forecast to fall 18% in 2020, to 1.7 million worldwide – with the coronavirus crisis interrupting ten successive years of strong growth." according to Bloomberg New Energy Finance: "However, sales of combustion engine cars are set to drop even faster this year (by 23%), and the long-term electrification of transport is projected to accelerate in the years ahead.  BNEF’s analysis suggests that global sales of internal combustion engine, or ICE, cars peaked in 2017 and will continue their long-term decline after a temporary post-crisis recovery. For the first time, BNEF sees overall new passenger vehicle sales peaking in 2036 as changing global demographics, increasing urbanization and more shared mobility outweigh the effects of economic development – though the fleet size keeps growing. Electric models are seen accounting for 3% of global car sales in 2020, rising to 7% in 2023, at some 5.4 million units."   https://bnef.turtl.co/story/evo-2020/   AS COVID-19 HITS ELECTRIC VEHICLES, SOME THRIVE, OTHERS DIE And quoting the BNEF report, Bloomberg today looked at which countries will drive EV adoption: "The pandemic ravaged economy is expected to give electric vehicles a boost in China, Europe and countries committed to sparking battery power via financial stimulus and infrastructure spending, In the U.S., electric vehicles sales will shrink to just 1.7% of the personal auto market in 2021. At the same time, the sector will swell to 8.1% of all sales in China, which accounts for the largest share of global EV sales, and 5% of those in Europe, the BNEF report says."   https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2020-05-19/as-covid-19-hits-electric-vehicles-some-thrive-others-die?sref=W369vOBR   VW PARKS CARS WHEREVER THEY GO In an article translated (Google translate!) from German: "Volkswagen , the largest automobile manufacturer in the world, they are currently mainly occupied with parking. The group has had difficulties with software development for quite some time - the electric car ID.3 is therefore pre-produced without a complete operating system, in the hope that the software will be added later when it is finally ready. In the meantime, thousands of ID.3s are parked as soulless cases, partly on the premises of the VW factory in Zwickau, as shown here, partly in a huge parking lot in Saxony, which VW does not like to show to the public. But now the car manufacturer could soon run out of space: Because not only does VW have software problems with the production of the ID.3, but recently also with the good old Golf. Delivery of the Golf 8 had to be stopped because the emergency assistant was not working.  Nevertheless, the company wants to continue producing the Golf 8 and simply, exactly, park thousands of cars somewhere until this pretty embarrassing software problem is solved."   https://www.sueddeutsche.de/wirtschaft/vw-golf-software-problem-1.4911260   2020 BMW X5 XDRIVE45E REVIEW – THE NEW BEST BUY "Because the X5 is one of the best-selling cars it has on sale today and keeping the fleet’s CO2 emissions in check is a tricky ordeal. A hybrid will definitely help out with that, especially considering the tax systems in various countries around the world." says BMWBlog: "The new BMW X5 xDrive45e came with a host of improvements compared to its predecessor. t low speeds it does emit a hum to warn pedestrians, but it would still cause a couple of frowns from people as they probably had no idea BMW has an X5 hybrid.   Whereas the old hybrid X5 had a 9.2 kWh battery, the new one can store more than 2.5 times that, being rated for 24 kWh out of which you can use 21 kWh. So that’s a big hike, even though the physical size of the battery didn’t change that much. Keep the pedal glued to the floor and speed just keeps ticking up. This car picks up speed at an alarming rate. It may be a hybrid, 2.5-ton monster but it can move. 0-62 takes just 5.6 seconds and you’ll go all the way up to 250 km/h (155 mph) if you dare."   https://www.bmwblog.com/2020/05/18/2020-bmw-x5-xdrive45e-review/   HYUNDAI MOTOR’S EVS A POPULAR CHOICE IN POLICE FLEETS AROUND EUROPE "A growing number of police forces around Europe are turning to Hyundai EVs to use in their fleets. Amid growing concerns about inner-city air pollution, zero-emission vehicles such as battery electric (BEV) and fuel cell electric (FCEV) vehicles present an attractive solution for police officers’ mobility needs." says Automotiveworld.com: "Hyundai’s best-selling all-electric SUV Kona Electric is a popular choice for police forces in countries like Switzerland, the Netherlands, Spain and the United Kingdom. A year ago, the police force of the canton of St. Gallen in Switzerland added 13 Kona Electric models to their fleet – five as police cars and eight as civilian vehicles.  In the Netherlands, police forces in Amsterdam, East Netherlands and Central Netherlands are also testing Kona Electric’s suitability as a police cruiser. Its long driving range and fast charging make it an attractive choice for police use. Kona Electrics can be found in the police fleets in Valencia, Spain, in both the 39 kWh and 64 kWh editions. And in the U.K., Sussex Police and North Wales Police already have one Kona Electric each in their fleets. Additionally, Hampshire Police have ordered nine Kona Electric models for their fleet, which will be delivered early next month."   https://www.automotiveworld.com/news-releases/hyundai-motors-evs-a-popular-choice-in-police-fleets-around-europe/   KIA E-NIRO VS KIA SOUL EV "Now, though, there's an all-new Soul EV, which uses the same 64kWh battery and 201bhp electric motor as its e-Niro sibling. And that raises an important question if you like the idea of a fully electric family SUV: which one is better?" asks WhatCar? "If the moment does take you, you can hustle both cars down a country road at a reasonable lick, but we’d describe their handling as tidy rather than fun. Of the two, it's the e-Niro that's more agile, because it leans less than the taller, marginally more top-heavy-feeling Soul, plus its steering reacts more naturally; the Soul's is quicker but not as progressively weighted, and that takes a bit of getting used to."   https://www.whatcar.com/news/kia-e-niro-vs-kia-soul-ev/n21450   MITSUBISHI EXTENDS 10,000 FREE ELECTRIC MILES OFFER ON OUTLANDER PHEV "Mitsubishi Motors in the UK has extended its 10,000 Free Green Miles offer for Outlander PHEV buyers until September. Offered in partnership with OVO Energy, the incentive provides drivers of the plug-in hybrid SUV with 10,000 miles worth of free electricity." according to AM Online "Customers will receive a £20.40 credit in their OVO account each month, for 24 months. The deal also includes Polar Plus membership, so Outlander PHEV drivers can charge away from home for free."   https://www.am-online.com/news/car-manufacturer-news/2020/05/19/mitsubishi-offers-10-000-free-electric-miles-with-outlander-phev   WITH ELECTRIC VEHICLES, BRAND REPUTATION IS NOT A SURE THING "When the topic turns to brand reputation and electric vehicles, the case seems easy enough. Zero emission cars make an important contribution to decarbonization, and that reflects nicely on the auto companies who produce them. However, even the simplest of brand calculations can take an unexpected turn when politics are involved." writes TriplePundit: "Officials in Alameda County, California, had been working with Tesla on a May 18 reopening plan for its Fremont facility, but Musk launched a ferocious attack on Twitter demanding an earlier opening. The result was a blinding blitz of free publicity, during which Musk restarted his factory in Fremont, California days before Ford and GM were set to open. If the idea was to re-assert Tesla’s image as a maverick bucking the entrenched industry tide and bureaucrats alike, Musk certainly succeeded on that score. Last week the president tweeted his approval of Musk’s tactics over the Fremont opening, writing that “California should let Tesla & @elonmusk open the plant, NOW. It can be done Fast & Safely!” If things continue in this vein, it seems that Musk may accomplish the seemingly impossible task of turning Trump voters into Tesla buyers."   https://www.triplepundit.com/story/2020/electric-vehicles-brand-reputation-not-sure-thing/120316     QUESTION OF THE WEEK   Should Dyson have continued to make a £150,000 EV, or should we only make EVs realistic? They begin with a classic, the first volume of Yukito Kishiro's Battle Angel Alita. Kodansha Comics has recently started to release this legendary cyberpunk series in nice deluxe hardbound editions -- the second deluxe volume is due for release in late February -- and the guys are excited that the title is back in print. Neither Shea nor Derek was familiar with Battle Angel Alita before, outside of hearing about the upcoming James Cameron/Robert Rodriguez film adaptation due out in 2018, but now both are hooked. In their overview, the guys highlight the kinetic quality of the illustrations, the ways in which Kishiro contextualizes even his most nasty characters, the complexities (and embedded mysteries) of his storyworld, and the ways in which he visualizes the title character...which, for Shea at least, is a little problematic. Next, they look at Abi Umeda's Children of the Whales, Vol. 1 (VIZ Media). This is another post-apocalyptic narrative -- at least the guys think things are set in a post-apocalyptic world -- and the storyworld that Umeda maps out is quite complex. In fact, as Derek suggests, there are so many nuances in this first volume that the story runs the risk of toppling over due to sheer ambiguity. However, the author is able to maintain a comprehendible balance in her tale, although several passages may require more than one reading. There are a lot of questions posed in this book, and while Derek is willing to continue on in future volumes to get the fuller picture, Shea isn't as enamored of the story. While he admires Umeda's art, he feels that the story's premise, especially as it relates to the Committee of Elders, may be a bit too predictable. Still, Derek feel that the volume is worth checking out.
