In this episode I am once again joined by Leigh Brasington, Buddhist meditation teacher and author of ‘Right Concentration, A Practical Guide to the Jhanas'. Leigh reveals his upcoming solo retreat plans and personal meditation goals and considers why it is that he continues to meditate after so many decades of practice. Leigh recalls his career as a computer programmer and draws analogies from the computer world to the workings of human beings on the Dharma path. Leigh expresses his views on AI, in particular whether or not AI will replace meditation teachers, and goes on to explore what makes a great meditation teacher and what makes a bad one, as well as the importance of heart connection when leading retreats, and answers the question ‘how enlightened should someone be before they can teach meditation?. Leigh also shares an exchange he had with an AI in which he asks questions about jhana meditation and evaluates the AI's answers. Leigh goes on to offer his take on Shinzen Young's ultrasound neuromodulation research and questions the possibility of its efficacy to bring about meaningful spiritual progress. … Also available on Youtube, iTunes, & Spotify. … 01:20 - Why does Leigh still go on solo meditation retreats? 06:15 - How has meditation changed Leigh's life? 06:42 - Leigh's meditation goals 08:30 - Why do intermediate and advanced practitioners stop practicing? 11:42 - The early days of computer programming 14:40 - Working as a computer programmer 18:09 - Writing a Tibetan-Tibetan dictionary for Tsoknyi Rinpoche 21:33 - Building his own DOS box 23:41 - Overlaps between computer programming and meditation 26:47 - Pros of cons of computer metaphors for describing humans and the Dharma 28:53 - KISS and other computer metaphors for meditation 32:02 - Buddhist fundamentalism and the doctrine of rebirth 34:41 - Did the Buddha really believe in rebirth? 38:21 - The lies of the Buddha 42:32 - Is Buddhist fundamentalism compatible with enlightenment? 45:46 - Does belief in rebirth prevent enlightenment? 49:02 - The immortality project 49:26 - Did Buddhism degrade or evolve? 53:34 - Mahayana writers who Leigh enjoys 54:07 - Why Leigh loves Shantideva's chapter on dedication 55:55 - Computers and Buddhism 58:33 - Will AI replace human programmers? 01:05:15 - Will AI teach meditation better than human teachers? 01:06:54 - What makes a really good meditation teacher 01:10:22 - Leigh asks AI dharma questions: what is the cause of dukkha? 01:13:41 - How do I know if I'm practicing jhana correctly? 01:15:05 - Why are the jhanas important? 01:16:23 - How can I tell whether I'm in 3rd of 4th jhana? 01:17:15 - How does one go from 4th to 5th jhana? 01:17:49 - Trouble entering the 1st jhana 01:19:12 - The human connection in meditation interviews 01:19:54 - How to establish a heart connection with your meditation students 01:23:11 - Is AI better than a mediocre meditation teacher? 01:26:30 - What makes a bad meditation teacher? 01:30:13 - How to spot a teacher with an agenda 01:32:56 - Why Leigh dislikes the Mahasi noting practice 01:34:53 - How enlightened should a meditation be? 01:40:12 - How Leigh tests Westerners who claim full enlightenment 01:42:17 - Buddhist faith claims vs other religions 01:48:28 - Buddhist vs Christian faiths 01:51:09 - Leigh challenges Shinzen's attempts to use ultrasound to induce nirodha 01:52:05 - How stream entry really works 01:54:13 - Using ultrasound to induce jhana states 01:56:23 - Does Leigh see any use in Shinzen's research? 01:57:42 - Could ultrasound jumpstart mediocre and fearful meditators? 02:01:20 - The spiritual path is about letting go … Previous episodes with Leigh Brasington: - https://www.guruviking.com/search?q=brasington To find our more about Leigh Brasington visit: - http://www.leighb.com/ For more interviews, videos, and more visit: - https://www.guruviking.com Music ‘Deva Dasi' by Steve James

Meet Shinzen Young, a long-time instructor of mindfulness, author of The Science of Enlightenment, and now co-director of the “Science Enhanced Mindful Awareness” or “SEMA” Lab at the University of Arizona. Shinzen is Jeff's OG meditation teacher. He is both a scholar of comparative mysticism, and a highly creative designer of strange and beautiful (and practical) meditation techniques. In this episode, instead of trying to banish thoughts, we drop into a "global unfixated state," and allow creative images and words and associations to spontaneously unfold. Both Shinzen's exposition and his guided practice are quite precise – so much so that Tasha kind of bristles against them, which makes for a lively discussion afterwards. But if you're patient, and able to trust what Shinzen is pointing to, it can lead to genuine insight. Thinking can shift from something rigid and constrained, to something more free-flowing and intuitive and even wise. This matters. For Shinzen, the best of humanity comes through via our creativity and intuition. In his words, we can train ourselves to “let nature take over.” Shinzen himself demonstrates this at the end, when he comes apart during an emotional discussion of Japanese Noh theater. Much good stuff on the “deep mind,” subconscious processing, and the better angels of our nature. So: here we go … like “seaweed in a tide poodle”!Links:Shinzen's website: https://www.shinzen.org/His YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/user/expandcontractHis original “Science of Enlightenment” audio series from the 90s. Dr Brian is one of my favourite people... I've known him for years and always value his kind nature and quiet wisdom (and now you get to meet him as well!) Dr. Brian Dower is the Founder and Lead Coach at LumenMindfulness.ca Dr. Brian led a thriving chiropractic practice in downtown Toronto for close to twenty years and regularly prescribed mindfulness training to his patients to help them deal with the stress and turmoil of their day-to-day lives and find a more centered, focussed way of living. In 2014, a career-changing injury compelled Dr. Brian to take the advice he'd been giving his patients for years and advance his own mindfulness practice to deal with the disruption in his life. He needed a fundamental reset in his own coping mechanisms. In the years since, his study of mindfulness and meditation has led him on a progressively deeper dive, through various in-person and online courses, retreats and practice, into exploring the richness and beauty of full engagement in the moment-by-moment experience of life. His studies have particularly focussed on the Unified Mindfulness work of Shinzen Young. Dr. Brian believes Young's systematic and accessible approach to everyday mindfulness harmonizes the best of the many techniques available. Shinzen's work provides an approach that makes sense and delivers the clarity and calm Dr. Brian had been seeking. Stress resilience improved, as did his sense of productivity, creativity and performance. Now a certified Lead Coach with Unified Mindfulness, Dr. Brian offers classes, one-on-one coaching, corporate workshops, and destination retreats to those who are looking to enhance their skills of concentration, clarity, and equanimity through mindfulness. Dr. Brian's years of experience as a chiropractor gives him unique insight into both the detrimental physiological effects of a psyche shadowed with stress as well as the power of the human mind to reset and succeed. Dr. Brian's goal? To introduce as many people as possible to the benefits of a mindful life that's characterized by clear perception, tranquillity, and contentment. In this episode we consider the effect of meditation practice and classical enlightenment on sexuality, as we continue the ongoing conversation between:

 - Shinzen Young, meditation teacher and neuroscience research consultant
 - Chelsey Fasano, a Columbia University neuroscience student
- Dr Jay Sanguinetti, Assistant Director for the Center for Consciousness Studies and Research Professor at the University of New Mexico We recall Leigh Brasington's statements in episode 115 that many of his students experience states of meditative absorption as erotic in nature, and we consider Chelsey's observation that Leigh's brain scans in these absorption states resemble images of the brain during orgasm. I contrast early Buddhist scriptural statements which state that it is impossible for enlightened people to have sexual intercourse with later, highly sexual accounts of enlightened masters such as ‘The Saint of 5000 Women', Drukpa Kunley, and Rinzai saint and erotic poet Ikkyū Sōjun, and pose the question, ‘What does the data say?'. In the face of this apparent disagreement within the wisdom traditions about the effect of realisation on sexuality, what trends have the panel observed in the sexuality of their meditation students, and in their ultra-sound subjects, and what might that tell us about the real world consequences of deep meditation practice and/or brain stimulation aimed at classical enlightenment. … Video version: https://www.guruviking.com/ep119-sex-and-enlightenment-shinzen-young-chelsey-fasano-dr-jay-sanguinetti/

Have you ever had the opportunity to talk with a true master in the realms of mindfulness and meditation? Over the years, I’ve read books and learned from various experts, but none with today’s level of mastery.  Today’s guest, Shinzen Young, has practiced and taught meditation for over 50 years and is considered to be a true master. He is the co-director of the SEMA (Sonication-Enhanced Mindfulness Acquisition) Lab doing neuroscience research at the University of Arizona, and author of one of the most practical books I’ve ever read on the subject: The Science of Enlightenment: How Meditation Works. In a conversation I’ve been looking forward to for a long time, Shinzen and I dive deep into what makes a mindfulness practice so valuable, overcoming limiting beliefs and setbacks, and what you should do to make your next practice even better. KEY TAKEAWAYS How to develop the fundamental attention skills that allow us to succeed not just in meditation, but in life. Why it’s so important to establish and maintain goals to have an effective, meaningful, lifelong meditation practice. Why meditation is not the whole story for human happiness - and the negative effects it can have on people.  What happened when Shinzen procrastinated and had to return an advance to a major publisher after failing to deliver his first book.  Why Shinzen recommends you do more of what you’re already doing in your mindfulness practice - and do it better. As CEO, lead content developer and head trainer at UnifiedMindfulness.com, Julianna is devoted to deepening people's understanding of research-supported mindfulness and empowering anyone to guide others in its practice. She has trained individuals, groups, and organizations in the practice of mindfulness for two decades and she developed the official teacher training program for the Unified Mindfulness system, designed by Shinzen young. With more than 150 weeks of immersive silent retreat training in both the mindfulness and Zen traditions, Julianna has completed over 20,000 hours of formal practice. Her brain has been studied in neuroscience labs at Vanderbilt, UNM, and UCLA. She also designed and led the training for a workplace research study which was carried out under noted mindfulness researcher David Creswell out of Carnegie Mellon University. That study showed positive outcomes for improved employee well-being and lower stress. Julianna co-authored papers from the study published in two prominent science journals: Mindfulness, and the Journal of Occupational Health Psychology. A novel aspect of the protocol was an emphasis on the application of mindfulness techniques in daily life, which is a strength of the Unified Mindfulness approach.       In this episode, Karen and Julianna discuss: Success Story of Julianna Commit to Get Leads Use your attention to recognize what is causing you to have resistance and discover what it feels like, then be willing to accept that feeling and do it anyway. The Modern Therapist's Survival Guide with Curt Widhalm and Katie Vernoy

An interview with Ashley Graber, LMFT – Curt and Katie talk with Ashley about mindfulness and meditation – how to incorporate into daily life, considerations for teaching your clients, and the things that therapists can get wrong when using mindfulness interventions! It’s time to reimagine therapy and what it means to be a therapist. We are human beings who can now present ourselves as whole people, with authenticity, purpose, and connection. Arrive Where You Started - Part 2 Today I have someone very special on the show, one of the most respected and well-known teachers of mindfulness and meditation.  His name is Shinzen Young, and his recent book, The Science of Enlightenment, immediately caught my attention because I've never thought of enlightenment in scientific terms before, and of course what really turned me on to meditation was how neuroscience has captured what happens in the brain.  Given that the word enlightenment is even hard for some people to say without feeling they've gone full on new-aged hippy,  talking about it more practically, like an everyday occurrence, that can even be measured, well...sign me up! Shinzen is an intriguing guy, and I wanted to know what makes him tick.  Taking this path took root early in life, but also required a powerful sense of curiosity and determination.  Come to find out, for Shinzen it also involved feeling a little miserable and anxious trying to fit in to the conventional aspirations of our Western society. So in this two-part interview, we spend a considerable amount of time exploring the motivations and events that led Shinzen down this path.  It is a very personal, honest, and revealing account of his pain, endurance, and the eventual peace of mind he experienced in becoming a Buddhist monk.   We discuss enlightenment, what it means, whether it's important for us to strive for, and how it just might be at the core of our very being.  We also dive into meditation techniques we can employ not just in seeking enlightenment, but also to feel a little better in our day to day lives.  Shinzen even takes time to evaluate and coach me in part 2 on my own practice, and it sounds like I'm doing pretty well.  So enlightenment must be right around the corner!! To summarize, not only am I speaking with a master-teacher of mindfulness and meditation, I'm talking to someone who feels meaning and purpose in every ounce of his body.  When he discovered this path at the young age of 14, he never looked back and knew, without a shred of doubt, this was what he would dedicate his life too.  So there's plenty to learn here about life, meaning, purpose and of course, enlightenment that only a master of his trade can teach.    Please welcome my guest today, Shinzen Young.  Thanks for listening, PF www.DeepSitPodcast.com

So I'm much more resilient overall. Thoughts on Breathing The breath is a place that is often a good place for people to start. In fact, at the very beginning, before I was introduced to Shinzen, breath was the first place I started. I focused on the tip of the nose, but I like to teach people how anything at all can be a focus in meditation, because that frees people up. What we want is to motivate people. We want them to get engaged in this practice. So, I like to introduce people to a technique that right off the bat shows them how they can focus on anything. As long as they're developing skills of concentration, clarity, and equanimity, they are practicing mindfulness and are getting those benefits that research has shown they can get. Suggested Resources Book: The Science of Enlightenment: How Meditation Works by Shinzen Young App: Brightmind Bullying Story I was bullied as a kid. When I was about twelve an incident happened where these two boys decided that I had done something at a birthday party, that I had said something that got someone into trouble. They decided that I needed to be punished for that. So for a month or two after that, every time they saw me in the halls, they would kick me as hard as they could. I was terrified. I changed my pattern so that I could avoid them. I rearranged the whole pattern of where I was going. To get from class A to class B, instead of just going up the stairs, I would go down to the basement and around, so I would miss the boys kicking me. I would go to school everyday and would think about the fact that I was going to have to see these boys. I really felt terrorized by them. The day that it finally shifted, was the day that I shifted. I dropped into a natural state that shifted everything. These [mindfulness] skills are naturally occuring. We all know what it's like to be in a heightened state of mindfulness. We've all had some kind of peak experience where there's a level of clarity there. Where we're deeply absorbed, we're concentrating fully. We have a sense of harmony or we have a sense of willingness for things to be as they are and that's the overriding experience. All we're saying with mindfulness is that you can strengthen that. You can experience it with greater regularity and greater depth. Looking back on that event [with the bullies], there came this moment where I didn't run from it any more. I became willing to turn toward it and I remember vividly. I chose the route where I knew I was going to pass them because it was the shortest route to my class and I didn't want to run anymore so I started up the steps. As they were coming toward me, I saw this kid, Bert. He was gearing up to kick me as hard as he could. I found myself saying, "ok you wanna kick me? Go ahead, kick me." In that moment he was totally nonplussed. He stopped and he never did it again. It was because of the way I went into it. I just went into it with an absolute fierce willingness that I was not going to be intimidated and that I was going to stand my ground. So whatever came out of my mouth, (go ahead and kick me), that wasn't the point. The point was that I managed to fully embrace where I was at and that strength of anchoring myself in my complete willingness. It just blew him out of the water.

Today's guest is Ross Jeffries. He's a self-proclaimed “attraction engineer,” and he's been called the godfather of the pickup artist community. As he’ll explain in this episode, the techniques he teaches are valuable not only for seducing women, but for influencing, persuading, and inspiring almost anyone -- even yourself. I attended one of his workshops in 2010 and can personally vouch for the power of his techniques. Find Out More About Ross Here: @RossJeffries on TwitterRoss Jeffries on FacebookSpeed Seduction on FacebookSpeed Seduction In This Episode: [02:58] - What is a pick up artist, and why would somebody want to learn the art of seduction if they’re geeky and socially awkward, and having trouble getting dates? [05:33] - Ross explains that he’s madly in love with language and its power to transform people and influence others. [07:47] - When someone says “none” or “always,” your ears should perk up, Ross points out. [08:42] - Stephan brings up the idea of beliefs being empowering or disempowering. Ross offers insight into how to reshape these beliefs through the mastery of language. [10:46] - Ross lists some other self-help tools that he recommends. [12:50] - We hear about Ross’ teacher, Shinzen Young. Ross recommends his book, The Science of Enlightenment, and reveals that Shinzen made meditation available to him. [15:44] - Ross talks about how listeners can hack the system so that they show up more powerfully. He explains that love, attraction, and desire aren’t things, or qualities within you, but rather activities that arise inside the neurology of a woman you’re seducing. [20:33] - Nothing Ross presents is “True,” he explains. Instead, it’s only a map. After explaining this, he walks listeners through the four levels of a woman’s mind. He also offers an outline of his technique for creating a chain of suggestions in a woman’s mind. [25:30] - Ross points out that he’s discussing a phenomenon that actually occurs at parties. [26:08] - What would Ross say to someone who’s listening and thinking, “Wow, this is really evil manipulation”? He explains that he sees what he does as elegant rather than evil, because it’s all about intent. [28:09] - Stephan expands on what Ross said about intent, and then Ross points out that he sees it as evening the playing field before talking about a very recent breakup. [31:45] - What we’re doing is demystifying the process of seduction, Stephan explains. [32:34] - What are some key things that would be illuminating for listeners who are trying to figure out where they stand with someone? [34:24] - Guys are often so into their internal dialogue that they’re unable to calibrate what’s going on with the woman in front of them, Ross explains. [37:17] - Stephan brings up a book recommendation from Ross: Provocative Hypnosis by Jørgen Rasmussen. He brings up a particular story from the book that had a powerful impact on him. [39:49] - Ross asks Stephan whether he used the techniques he learned after taking Ross’ class. [40:36] - Stephan brings up a story that he had read about Ross before meeting him. Ross then expands on the story, and he and Stephan talk about anchoring and rewiring habits. [45:18] - What would be some habits that Ross would recommend for listeners? [47:24] - Ross takes a moment to define what “trance” means for listeners who may not be familiar with the term. [52:04] - Stephan asks for an example of what Ross means by saying “the most flexible frame wins.” [54:32] - What are other potential responses to use when a woman says that she already has a boyfriend? He begins by examining the general framework of questions and why humans ask questions at all. This leads to a presentation of three fundamental goals for Life and how a spiritual practice can help reach those goals, how to recognize when a spiritual practice goes off course, and what results to expect from a successful spiritual practice.
