In this episode, HR Director Kristen Foley provides a deep dive into her experiences within the entertainment industry. She emphasizes the vital role of bridging the gap between creativity and administration, stressing the significance of prioritizing employee experience. Kristen delves into effective strategies for nurturing creativity and well-being in the workplace, including mentorship and holistic wellness initiatives, and she highlights the importance of leading by example.Kristen Foley is a seasoned Human Resources professional with a rich background in fostering healthy workplace cultures. With roles spanning from Human Resources Director at GrandSon Creative and Kate Somerville Skincare to her current positions as a Human Resources Consultant for the Wellness Industry, Kristen's 20 years of experience, combined with her passion for wellness, empower her to guide startups in building strong organizational foundations. Here are a few of the topics we'll discuss on this episode of People Analytics: Working with creatives who love what they do brings a unique dynamic to HR in the entertainment industry. Creatives think more abstractly, which requires a different approach when it comes to HR processes and communication. Balancing structure and creativity is key to supporting creative professionals without stifling their imagination. Find ways to add value and satisfaction to your current role without necessarily seeking a promotion. Listen and let individuals find their own solutions. Minimize tensions in difficult conversations by removing the fear factor. Show compassion and kindness when delivering difficult information. Resources: GrandSon Creative StaffGeek Connect with Kristen Foley:LinkedInConnect with our host, Lindsay Patton: LinkedIn Email Quotables: 13:25 - “Just looking back over the years, I mean, I think there's so many ways that you can add value and satisfaction to someone's role if you don't necessarily have a promotion, you know, or a role to promote them into, there's mentorship and there's, you know, we have, we had graduate business analyst training programs and we have internships, and we have, you know, different programs with universities throughout the years in my, in the companies that I've worked with. And I think that when someone gets the opportunity to share what they do, it reignites that passion in a way.” 22:19 - “Every day, if there's something that you can do to one degree of progress, that time is going to go by so fast anyway. You might as well do something small, then do nothing at all, because it's too overwhelming to say, I'm gonna completely overhaul my life tomorrow on Monday. These are all the things I wasn't doing before. It's so much more impactful and sustainable to just do something small each day and then build on that and have that compound effect.” 05:27 - “The way I think about it is, you know, structure versus non-structure. I used to work with, and I still do work with quite a bit of artists, but in a journalistic capacity, you know, I had to enforce deadlines quite a bit. And I think I realized it was because, you know, artists, you know, and I consider myself a creative as well, we kind of live in a world without structure or limits or boxes. So it's, you know, I think there has to be that extra step, like you said, the handholding of reinforcing deadlines and, you know, reminders and things like that.” 12:48 - “It reminded me of what you said about how artists, they're more open to, you know, the experiences that are, you know, a little bit more horizontal as opposed to, I believe the financial sector was more about climbing the ladder as, you know, a people person. 22:52 - Lindsay: “I know one thing that's important to you is leading by example. So I'm certain that, you know, leading by example is showing that these tweaks are smaller, you know, as you're progressing, like, hey, I'm at this point, but I'm still making progress. So how do you, you know, what other ways do you lead by example within the organization?”Kristen: “I would say, well, I certainly bring my wellness habits. So from a literal standpoint, like I show up with my healthy foods, I take my walks at lunch, I'll take calls, you know, while walking if possible, if it's a meeting that I don't need to be like, you know, face-to-face on Zoom or something like that. Something I just need to listen in on. So I do encourage people to do that when they can. I'll go to the gym across the street with some of my coworkers at lunch. Hey, I'm going to go walk on the treadmill for 30 minutes. Do you want to come? And they do, so literally leading by example in that way, like, follow me to the gym.”

Are you going through cancer or loss or know someone who is and you just don't know what to say or how you can help?In this episode I dialogue with Kim Hamer, HR Consultant and widow, about how to deal with difficult conversations around cancer and death, the awkward moments of not knowing what to say, and how to ask and give support when navigating cancer, grief and death in the workplace.**********Kim Hamer is a Human Resources Consultant, public speaker, and author of “100 Acts of Love: A Girlfriend's Guide to Loving Your Friend through Cancer or Loss”. After her husband's death, Kim noticed that managers received little to no guidance when navigating cancer or death within their teams. She saw how their lack of helpful tools and guidance was costly, and how it negatively affected employee engagement, increased turnover rates and lowered productivity. Kim has set out to change that by launching “100 Acts of Love”, a consultancy that provides tools to help leaders increase team productivity, trust, and engagement when cancer impacts the entire team. "Grief does not go anywhere".-Juanetta White My guest today is a fly widow, Juanetta White. She was married to her high school sweetheart and very best friend, “Big Al”, for 20 years. They were together for 30 years. She became a widow at 46, when Al passed away unexpectedly on December 19, 2020. She loves being a mom to their only child and “favorite teenager,” Ashton. A big part of Juanetta's healing journey includes rediscovering who she is and deciding how she wants to show up in the world during this next season of life. As a woman of faith, she is learning to trust God's plan…even when it's hard…even when it hurts. She believes that our grief is a reflection of the love we carry for the person we lost. Juanetta wants others to know that they can grieve while experiencing joy and peace. She is intentional about finding a reason to laugh every day. On the weekends, you can find Juanetta and Ashton taking a ride in Big Al's restored 1968 Chevy Impala…laughing, with the music turned up loud. Juanetta is a certified Leadership, Career and Life Coach, and a certified Human Resources Consultant. She is passionate about helping people embrace new perspectives and develop competencies so they can show up as the best versions of themselves at work and home. In early 2020, prior to his passing, Al encouraged and supported Juanetta as she launched JSW Coaching and Consulting. One of the most common challenges that parents who are also business leaders face is time shortage. This is because they tend to think that they should be doing everything, and although they strive for some balance in their lives, there's always something that falls through the cracks, leaving them with a sense of guilt.Olessia Lapina, Human Resources Consultant and Founder of Lapina Consulting, has been trying to find work-life balance for a while now. Since she recently started her own consulting firm and has a family (including a toddler), Olessia feels like she doesn't have time to be fully present in either parts of her life, and she's been feeling guilty about it.Perhaps Olessia can think a little bit differently about her roles and responsibilities instead of looking for perfect balance. That way she can enjoy the ride and go along with all its ups and downs.Listen to this new episode of The Frame of Mind Coaching™ Podcast!https://www.frameofmindcoaching.com/podcastRead the episode's transcript here:https://www.buzzsprout.com/1252997/episodes/10870353Have you found yourself in a similar situation? You know that including stories, especially personal stories, in your presentations is important to connect with and engage the audience. This is true whether you're giving a keynote, a business presentation, or a training. Along with integrating various stories and examples throughout your presentations, you can also have one core story that illustrates your topic and why it's important. This is what my guest Chanta Wilkinson and I have been working on during our coaching sessions as part of our Thought Leader Academy. Chanta provides trainings and workshops for organizations around diversity, equity, and inclusion, so we identified a story going back to when she was a young girl that perfectly illustrates why she has gravitated to this work and why DEI is so important. Even better, we've identified different angles she can use from this one core story, depending on who's in the audience and what she wants to emphasize. You are going to love Chanta's energy and passion for what she does! Enrollment for our Thought Leader Academy is opening again in September! Get the details and join our interest list at https://www.speakingyourbrand.com/academy/. About My Guest: Chanta Howard Wilkinson is the founder of Chanta Wilkinson Consulting, LLC, where she provides diversity, equity and inclusion consulting and assistance to organizations implementing diversity, equity and inclusion strategies and best practices. Chanta previously served as a Human Resources Consultant for small to mid-size businesses in Delaware and New York City. Prior to that, she served as the Associate Director of EEO/AA for Kings County Hospital in Brooklyn. In addition, she also served as a Deputy Attorney General and an EEO/Affirmative Action Coordinator for the New Jersey Office of Attorney General and an Associate at a large New Jersey law firm. Chanta holds a J.D. from Rutgers University School of Law, a BA from Rutgers College, and a Diversity & Inclusion for HR Certificate from Cornell University. Have you ever found yourself running on autopilot, and not checking in or asking yourself “is this situation right for me?” I know I've been there. This is a place that so many of us find ourselves in without even realizing it. We have a list of our daily needs, the ones that we are responsible for to keep our family and households running. Then we add on work, school, entrepreneurship, friendships, relationships… The list goes on and on. I know personally, I've found myself taking on extra tasks, or saying “yes” to too many opportunities. But we all need to stop and ask ourselves: “Is this lifestyle that I am living, helping me or hurting me?” Liesl Hays joins us today on The Business of Becoming to share her powerful story of finding herself in crisis, and how she was able to take a step back and find herself again. It was so refreshing to have Liesl on the show and speak so openly and from a place of pure vulnerability, to allow for us to better understand the steps that she took to take a hold of her life. Are you struggling with time management? Or struggling with setting boundaries with the cast of people in your life? If the answer is yes, listening to this episode is a MUST! In This Episode, Darlene and Stephanie Angelo discuss: Stephanie’s comprehension and experience around the issue of Domestic Violence from a personal and professional aspect. Her past speaking platform was around this very issue. Key Takeaways: As a Human Resources Consultant, Stephanie became very interested in children’s safety and programs. Eventually, she concluded how undertrained H.R. professionals were around domestic abuse and its impact on employees. Stephanie eventually became involved in training others on how to detect the signs of domestic abuse as they played out in the workplace. Although inroads have been made, this continues to be a major social problem. An important book along with Stephanie’s book, Serrated, is Not to People Like Us by Dr. Susan Weitzman. Stephanie discusses her book which centered around a specific woman who asked her to write it. This book displays the horrors of this social problem. She also shares information about the board game she developed with a colleague called OUTrage. It is a very useful tool but should only be used with adults and children 13 years and over. If people speak up, and one person is joined by one more and those two are joined by one more and those three are joined by one more, you can accumulatively have an effect of having voices heard and that is where change takes place. - ~Stephanie Angelo Connect with Stephanie Angelo: https://www.StephanieAngelo.com Stephanie’s game, OUTrage, can be purchased at www.thegamecrafter.com/games/outrage. The book, Serrated by Tracy Stombres and Stephanie Angelo can be purchased on Amazon.com.

(https://www.theh2duo.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/water-in-real-life-mimi-white.png) Melinda White often referred to as Mimi, serves as a Human Resources Consultant for Montgomery County, Environmental Services located in Dayton, Ohio. In her current role, she holds the responsibility for various training, organizational development, community collaboration, and human resources functions. As an active community member in Dayton, She is a member of the advisory board for Engineering Technology at Sinclair Community College, serves as an executive board member of the National Conference for Community & Justice of Greater Dayton (NCCJ). She has served as an active member and contributor of the Ohio Diversity Council and National Diversity Council since 2008. She is skilled and passionate about bringing people of different backgrounds together to create and achieve shared goals. She has a bachelor’s degree in Management/Project Management from Antioch University McGregor, a Master’s degree in Management and Leading Change (HR) (MLCHR) from Antioch University Midwest, and a Certified Diversity Professional (CDP). Top Takeaways Build your talent pipeline from the ground up by working with the people actually doing that type of work. Human beings are hardwired to have biases. Bring them to the surface and be willing to change. Leading with empathy will allow you to build the workforce of tomorrow with the positive diversity and inclusion you seek. Shownotes: [4:43] So Mimi, did you choose water or did water choose you? Water chose me. I started liking it, which is kind of weird. [5:44] When you presented at UMC we heard a lot about workforce. You came from outside of water so where did you start in developing your talent pipeline? I had to let them know I wasn’t here for your job. I put on a pair of boots and picked up a sledgehammer. I went on a series of ride alongs with the team. [7:15]I know each one of my employee’s names. I stand outside my door and wave and tell them how much I appreciate them. They could choose to be anywhere, but they chose here. We are a family. [9:10]Our boots are dirty and we can step on your carpet – but that’s why we have vacuums. [9:35]You are working with students to come and join the water sector. Can you tell us a little more? The Water Utility Technician Program helps let students know the value of these type of jobs– its hard to find operators because we forgot about the trades. The water sector is a lucrative industry with good paying jobs. A student can take the class, take the test and get a job. Ask field staff what they would need to succeed in this industry. [12:21]If you build it they will come – not true unless they know you built it! Mimi went out and marketed these programs to students. She brought field staff and vehicles to gain interest and brought the students on tours. No one talks more passionately about a job than the person in that job. Have our field staff communicate with potential students about the value of this career. [15:30]High school students next step is to gain independence. How do we leverage this to make an impact on high school students? Invite them to place where they can work and talk with people already working in the industry. [18:18]Getting people in the door is an important part but so is nurturing them. How are you handling professional development? Our employees were missing key interviewing skills which fostered the need for nurturing and professional development for the field staff. I am willing to give my time on the weekends if they are willing to as well. Mimi taught the employees to have more confidence to interview better. This engagement demonstrated care for the employee and that they are valued. The employees learned how to talk about the job and what they knew rather than relying on someone knowing them.
