Marshall County dairy farmer, Stephanie Nash, isn't afraid to speak out on the issues impacting American agriculture. She recently made appearances on Fox News and has worked with Turning Point USA to speak about inflation and overbearing regulations farmers are facing. She says it takes a group of people advocating to be heard and effectively get the ag message out.
"Pay attention to your attention." Amishi P. Jha came to her pathbreaking work studying the neuroscience of mindfulness and attention when, as a young professor of cognitive neuroscience at the University of Pennsylvania, she lost feeling in her teeth. She had been grinding them as a profound stress response to burnout from her responsibilities as a wife, mother, and tenure-track professor. Knowing from her academic work that the brain can change, she told herself at the start of summer, “before I quit my own career, let’s see if I can get my own brain to change.” She had just heard a talk about the power of meditation to change brain images from another neuroscientist. And although she had grown up in a Hindu family, born in the Indian city of Gandhi’s ashram – where meditation practice was “in the air” – she had never discussed it or practiced it (and her scientific mind had earlier dismissed some spiritual practices from her youth). But that summer, determined to see if she could change her brain, she bought a book by Jack Kornfield, Meditation for Beginners, with an accompanying CD. “I committed to reading a chapter each day and doing one of the practices, probably between eight and fifteen minutes. Within a couple of months, I was more present, more engaged. It got me thinking that there was something about doing this thing every day that was reacquainting me with my life. … Instead of being foggy and distracted, I was aware and connected. So I thought to myself, hey, wait a minute; I study attention. I need to figure out how this works.” She went to look at the scientific attention literature and found almost nothing. So she decided to “put mindfulness meditation to the test and research it rigorously in the lab.” This was in 2004, “before mindfulness was even a thing in our popular culture, and people in my department warned that I’d be committing career suicide by researching this topic,” she recalls. She launched the first-ever study to offer mindfulness training tools to active-duty military service members as they prepared for deployment. What she has discovered is that without intervention, attention is compromised, and attentional lapses increase. Yet, with mindfulness training, attention can be strengthened and protected. As one of the first scientists to research the links between mindfulness and attention, she is known for her pioneering mindfulness work with soldiers, firefighters, medical trainees, and others for whom attention is a matter of life and death. With her book, Peak Mind, she has started bringing her healthy-attention message to parents, CEOs, accountants, teachers, managers—essentially anyone whose work and decision-making feels like life and death. Jha studies how we pay attention: the process by which our brain decides what's important out of the constant stream of information it receives. Both external distractions (like stress) and internal ones (like mind-wandering) diminish our attention's power, Jha says -- but some simple techniques can boost it and train it for greater focus and less distractibility. "Pay attention to your attention," Jha says in a TEDx talk that has more than 5 million views. Jha is a Professor of Psychology at the University of Miami, and Director of Contemplative Neuroscience for the Mindfulness Research and Practice Initiative. Working with the U.S. Army and others in extremely high-stress occupations, Jha uses functional MRI, electroencephalography (EEG) and other neurobehavioral measures to study how the brain pays attention, the mental effects of stress, and ways to optimize attention. In addition to her own published body of research, her work has been featured in many outlets including TED.com, NPR, and Mindful Magazine. In addition, she has been invited to present her work to NATO, the UK Parliament, the Pentagon, and at the World Economic Forum. She received her PhD from the University of California–Davis, and received her postdoctoral training at the Brain Imaging and Analysis Center at Duke University in functional neuroimaging. She studies the neural bases of attention and the effects of mindfulness-based training programs on cognition, emotion and resilience. Acknowledging the tension between offering mindfulness tools (founded on Buddhist principles of nonviolence) to active military, Jha recalls her own Gandhian roots: “Nonviolence is part of my core philosophical thread. Yet nonviolence does not mean inaction. It doesn’t mean you do nothing. Sometimes what you do to reduce violence and suffering is take action. ,,, [I]f a soldier has a machine gun that can destroy an entire village, I want to make sure that person has the capacity to really know what they’re doing and have full control over their faculties, to be able to withhold as appropriate, not be reactive. So a super soldier in many ways is one that can control when to not pull the trigger, not to just pull the trigger.” Please join Stephanie Nash and Birju Pandya in conversation with this researcher using her gifted scientific mind for action to help reduce suffering.

Our farmers and ranchers are so important to all of us. Our government should roll out the red carpet for our agriculture industry, but instead, leftist politicians bow down to the gods of "climate change" and "political correctness" rather than our own citizens. Stephanie Nash advocates for our nation's farmers and ranchers, and also uses her experience working on a dairy farm, to write and sing about it.

Stephanie Nash and I had more in common than we every thought, a California native but she certainly has the better voice! I loved chatting dairy and music with this sweet girl, be sure ot checkout her new single!! More about Stephanie: As a fourth-generation dairy farmer who's dedicated the majority of her life to the family farm, Stephanie Nash quickly learned compassion for the agriculture community. Her latest venture also incorporates her other passion and career, country music. She's created an eight-part video series titled ‘The Life of a Farmer' for her YouTube channel to bring awareness to the needs of those that cultivate our lands and waters. “Growing up I saw strong agricultural communities diminish,” says Nash. “Sadly, so many farms that are vital to providing food do not get the same opportunity as other businesses to grow and flourish and their success is critical. My hope is that the series is educational and sheds light on the importance of farming.” Episode one of the online series features a charming, nearly 98-year old Paul Smith O'Dell of Laurens, South Carolina. He showcases his cotton, beef and crop farm, now run by his children, and 1947 tractor, the first one released after WWII which he bought new for $146. In conjunction with the release of Nash's second and self-penned single “Time Changes,” which debuts October 9 and is a message of hope for the industry, Nash is awarding scholarships of the same name to Future Farmers of America students. The contest, open now through October 1, encourages young farmers to submit a video stating why they love agriculture, how they're making a difference in their community and how the money will benefit their chapter. Winners will be announced October 24. For more details on how to submit, and to watch a promotional video featuring FFA impresarios sharing the news, click here. https://www.stephanienashmusic.com/ti... *Connect with Stephanie* IG: @stephanienashmusic FB: @stephanienashmusic website: https://www.stephanienashmusic.com/ab... Hear from Commission of Agriculture Charlie Hatcher, DVM, executive director of Nourish Knoxville Charlotte Tolley, Karen McCulley of Amazin' Acres of Fun, Jennie Schutte with Pilaroc Farms, and finally Tennessee logger Shane Lusk. SHOW NOTES Our guest today is an amazing young woman. Stephanie Nash grew up in the Central Valley of California on a dairy farm. She always had music in her heart and was singing and writing songs from a young age. When it came time for college she headed to Fresno State University to study agriculture and carry on her families traditions in ag. California has become increasingly unfriendly to dairy farmers through regulation, taxes and many other factors. So, when Stephanie was 20 years old, her parents sold the dairy farm and moved the operation to Tennessee. Tennessee is not a traditional dairy state, but they found a niche there and went for it. Stephanie relocated to Tennessee with them and finished college there. During this time she rediscovered her love and passion for singing and started pursuing it as a professional career. She is really going for it, and today you can find her on Spotify and on Youtube singing her songs and some other ones as well. Her newest single is coming out later this fall on October 9th, and it is called "Time Changes". Stephanie is determined to mesh her love of music with her love of agriculture. So, as she grows her platform she is using it to tell the story of agriculture on her Youtube show, "The Life Of A Farmer". Stephanie interviews farmers from all of the United States on their farms and publishes the videos on her channel. Stephanie is also supporting the FFA by creating a scholarship for a chapter and raising funds for it through her platforms. She wasn't able to participate in the FFA herself, but saw what it does for students when her brother was a member. She is starting a tradition of supporting multiple chapters every year and plans to continue this for the foreseeable future. Stephanie Nash is a dynamic Mindfulness Coach, Integrative Counselor and speaker specializing in the comprehensive and uniquely structured Unified Mindfulness System, developed by Shinzen Young, with whom she has worked closely since 1998. An accomplished and versatile professional actress and acting coach for more than 30 years, she also has an expertise in body language. Using the Unified Mindfulness System, Stephanie designed and taught a mindfulness program for a 2012 Harvard Medical School brain study with breakthrough results (in connection with which her brain was also studied by Harvard!). She has co-taught a pilot course at UCLA that explored how mindfulness can enhance learning and writing. As a mindfulness coach, Stephanie encourages and teaches a joyful, light, practical approach on how to take mindfulness skills and apply them to living more fully in the present moment. She specializes in stress reduction, optimizing performance, and rewiring one’s relationship to food and eating, all with the goal of navigating life with more insight, less suffering, optimal performance and decision making, while enjoying the process. She is currently writing an instructional book on mindful eating – and also shares various meditations (including ones for sleeping, eating, and a program on “Letting Go of Negative Thinking and Judgment”) offered on the Insight Timer app. She addresses these issues in the easiest, lightest way possible, creating a “user friendly” approach to healing and deepening one’s experiences through mindful awareness and physicality, suffusing the learning with humor and joy. Stephanie has taught her unique style of laughing meditation, which utilizes laughter to help decrease suffering and elevate fulfillment in daily life. Her laughter meditation workshops make laughter contagious. She prescribes 10 minutes of laughing meditation per day to improve one’s quality of life and she incorporates mindful laughing into her stress reduction teaching. Stephanie has also led "Posture Clinics" at meditation retreats where she teaches how the natural structure of the body can support us in ways that most people are presently not utilizing (and consequently unnecessarily stressing the neck and shoulder muscles). She is presently completing her book, Posture for Meditation and Life, based on her article, Posture-pedia, which she wrote in 2005 and which is now widely used by meditation centers and teachers all over the United States. (She was even asked by Navy Seals if they could use it.) As a body language expert, Stephanie has taught a popular workshop called, Shifting Positions to Shift Perceptions: How Body Language Affects How You Think and Feel at UCLArts and Healing– calling upon her years of training in various movement and healing modalities as well as her acting training and experience. She has also taught Expressive Movement at the University of Southern California and has taught movement to various acting schools and groups. Stephanie grew up in Ohio. where the nearby woods were her refuge and seeded her lifelong love of being in nature. With a psychology degree from Duke University, and an MFA from the Yale School of Drama, Stephanie’s professional acting career started in the early 1980’s with a national tour of a Broadway show, “Barnum”, where she played the flute, juggled and hung on a trapeze – continuing over the next decades to numerous appearances in theatre and on TV shows, films and dozens of commercials. Los Angeles theatre audiences have seen her play several leading roles at the Odyssey Theatre, and her one-woman (comedic) show based on the true story of her Native American vision quest (where she spent 4 days with no food or water alone on a mountain) played to sold-out audiences. Stephanie moved to California from New York in 1992. Here she began a semi-annual practice of solitary camping experiences that have had a profound influence on her and led her to a desire to speak with someone about these experiences. She first met Shinzen Young at a meditation retreat at the Vipassana Support Institute. He mentored her in meditation practice and, with her signature joyful and good humored approach, she taught him how to juggle. In 2007 Stephanie founded the nonprofit, Mindfulness Arts, through which she has offered mindfulness programs for the local community, in addition to audio and video recordings of her teachings, and interviews with other respected teachers, all offered at no cost to the recipient. Join us with this wise and joyful teacher!
