Trump's Immigration Policies and Their Impact | Tahmina Watson on Lean to the Left PodcastIn this powerful episode of The Lean to the Left Podcast, hosts Bob Gatty and Mark M. Bello explore with immigration attorney and author Tahmina Watson the devastating effects of Donald Trump's immigration policies on immigrants, businesses, and American democracy.Watson, founder of Watson Immigration Law in Seattle and author of Legal Heroes in the Trump Era and The Startup Visa, shares her frontline insights into the legal, economic, and social consequences of Trump's immigration crackdown. She discusses critical issues including:✅ The broad legal challenges facing immigrants✅ The economic impact on startups, businesses, and workers✅ The travel bans and restrictions on student visas✅ The constitutional concerns raised by executive orders✅ The importance of legal and community action to resist harmful policiesIf you care about human rights, immigration reform, and preserving democracy, this is a conversation you don't want to miss.
Most of President Trump’s closest allies appear to be cheering on his major changes to immigration policy – which have been numerous. These include executive orders suspending America’s refugee resettlement program, ramping up and expediting deportations, halting asylum claims and canceling existing appointments, and more. But one program has exposed a major rift in MAGA world over the role of foreign workers, especially in tech: H-1B visas. Trump’s inner circle is feuding over the future of the visas, which let companies hire foreign workers with hard-to-find skills, granting them temporary permission to live and work in the U.S. There were more than 470,000 applications entered for 85,000 spots in the latest H-1B visa lottery. The battle has been heated and sometimes downright nasty. Elon Musk and similar tech moguls say the visas are vital to fostering innovation. Meanwhile, Steve Bannon and other right-wing influencers argue H-1Bs lets companies replace American workers with cheaper foreign labor. All of this has led to a lot of questions about the future of the program during the second term of a president who once took steps to restrict H-1B visas -- but now says he has “always liked” them. That’s got big resonance here in the Puget Sound region, where some of the companies with the most approved H-1B petitions are located. To discuss the climate around H-1B visas, Soundside was joined by Jerry Lopez, CTO of Noise Figure Research, a Renton-based tech company; Andrew Kreighbaum, immigration reporter at Bloomberg Law; and Tahmina Watson, an immigration lawyer with Watson Immigration Law. The Wellbeing and Career World podcast and guest Tahmina Watson have no association with any of the Airlines or Individuals mentioned within those Airlines. 1)I gave a brief introduction about your background, Can you let our listeners know more about your background? 2) Tahmina, there are so many articles in the news and social media informing of a Pilot shortage in the USA and how airlines are helping expats pilots obtain Visas to work in the USA. Is it so easy what these reports are saying? 3) I want to first ask you about the E3 Visa. There is an article from Business insider about Australian expat pilots having an opportunity to work for Breeze Airways, that article mentions "Australian pilots will be able to work as Breeze pilots under the E-3 work visa program in a little-used but not unprecedented solution to the pilot shortage. Skilled Australian nationals can apply to legally work in the US and regional airlines including CommutAir and ExpressJet Airlines have used the program to recruit pilots from the country. "It's an opportunity to give good, hardworking, well-qualified folks jobs who want to live in the US [and] want to be a pilot for a US airline," Owens said. 4) Are there any Visas available to unemployed/ex-pat pilots to gain access to employment in the USA? 5)Are these Visas expensive and what is the time span from application to setting foot in the USA for work?6) If the reported pilot shortage in the USA is fact, then why not make it easier for expat pilots to obtain a visa from all countries.? 7) What are the first steps do you recommend to a pilot wanting to obtain a visa in the USA? 8) I have some questions sent in from Pilots looking for more information: Which are the effective operational limits to the NIW EB-2 visa ?Is it possible to obtain any visa without any sponsor? Will my application cost large amounts of money? Is it possible a special unit can be formed by the USA immigration office only for pilots that could help solve the Reported pilot shortage and reported transportation issues . If i get a visa, is it permanent or renewable? If i obtain a visa, can i apply for permanent residency? 9) Is it worth contacting airlines to ask them about possible opportunities for ex-pats? 10) What about the financial status of the pilot, for example: is proof of savings and being able to support oneself criteria of the application? Question 11) Is there anything else I may have missed out which you feel is important to share? 12) Where can listeners find you on social media? Have you ever worked really, really hard at something and still end up not succeeding? When and how did you decide to change directions? In this episode, our guest worked her tail off to became a “barrister” aka a lawyer in the UK. She failed along the way, a lot. Once she fell in love and moved to the US with her husband, she had to become a lawyer all over again to meet US criteria. She worked toward a goal that she THOUGHT she wanted, like many of us do, only to realize that the universe was pulling her in a different direction.Tahmina Watson is the Founder of Watson Immigration Law with expertise in business, investor and family-based immigration. She's the Author of "The Startup Visa: Key to Job Growth and Economic Prosperity in America." Tahmina is a passionate advocate for immigration reform, the Mother of two little girls, and is the founder and co-founder of multiple non-profit foundations. During our conversation, we talk about working hard (like really hard) toward a dream that Tahmina thought she wanted and struggled along the way. With her eye on the prize, she learned more about her values and purpose along her journey. She eventually found her true career calling and passion in an area of law that she had been resisting for a long time. In this episode, we talk about:When you have a set idea, but you don't work toward it happily, you won't project the best version of yourself. The key to finding your purpose is to be authentic and honest with yourself.Be open to what the universe is revealing to you, the door could be opening to your purpose.Learn more about Tahmina below:Website: Watson Immigration LawLinkedInPodcast: Tahmina Talks ImmigrationBook: The Startup Visa: Key to Job Growth & Economic Prosperity in AmericaBook: Legal Heroes in the Trump Era

By and large, the USA is a very welcoming country. Nearly all of its people are very welcoming and encouraging, spare the oddball that can mouth some unsavory comments either directly to your face or indirectly. The policies, however, haven't been very clear cut and are still very fluid causing a lot of uncertainty to people waiting in line legally.Immigration attorneys have to be on their feet to keep themselves abreast of current policies. This is not easy. We spoke with Tahmina Watson Esq., of Watson Immigration Law, to know more. In this episode, Tahmina Talks Immigration with the Producer Chevi Chung and Director Ellen peters as well as one of the actors Nicole Lockett (who is also Senior Paralegal and Office Manager at Watson Immigration Law) of a play called Sincerely America. If in Washington State, we hope you will watch the play! Tickets can be purchased at www.sincerelyamerica.bpt.me. Listen to this podcast to learn more! Sincerely, America is inspired by the immigrant experience in an effort to create empathy and understanding for each other by reaching into the past to see the history of our community. The first play of the production, American Dreams, a play by Linda Britt and directed by Ellen Peters, focuses on the immigrant experience in the U.S., an experience which varies widely depending on country of origin, race, religion, age, and location allowing the characters to focus on the aspect of their story that is most meaningful to them. The second play of the production, The Art of Remembering, a play by Adina L. Ruskin and directed by Chevi Chung, shows three actors embodying different facets of a young woman who returns home to bury her father. While there, she cleans out her closet and with each object she discovers, she touches on the stories of her ancestors that are as diverse as a feisty Polish-Jewish émigré taking America by storm, an Argentine who stands against his country's repression, and a woman who witnesses the fall of the Berlin Wall. Together, Sincerely, America reminds us of the beauty of life and the importance of our past.
