A Small Voice: Conversations With Photographers

Paddy Summerfield (born 1947) is a British fine art photographer who has lived and worked in Oxford in the UK all his life. Paddy is known for his evocative series' of black and white images, shot on 35mm film, which co-opt the traditional genre of documentary photography to realise a more personal and inward looking vision. He has said his photographs are exclusively about abandonment and loss. After taking an Art Foundation course at the Oxford Polytechnic, Summerfield attended Guildford School of Art, studying firstly in the Photography Department, then joining the Film department the following year. In 1967, when still a first-year student, he made photographs that appeared in 1970 in Bill Jay's magazine Album. Between 1968 and 1978, Paddy documented Oxford University students in the summer terms. His pictures published in Creative Camera, and on its cover in January 1974, were recognised as psychological and expressionist, unusual in an era of journalistic and documentary photography. Throughout his life, Paddy has focused on making photographic essays that are personal documents. From 1997 to 2007 he photographed his parents, his mother with Alzheimer's disease and his father caring for her. A book of the work entitled Mother and Father was published by Dewi Lewis, as have been all of Paddy's other books: Empty Days, The Holiday Pictures, Home Movie and The Oxford Pictures.Next Spring there will be an exhibition at North Wall as part of the Photo Oxford Festival (April 18 - 7 May 2023) of Pictures From The Garden a project in which seven photographers - Vanessa Winship, Alys Tomlinson, Matthew Finn, Nik Roche, Sian Davey, Jem Southam and Alex Schneideman - have made work in response to Paddy's Mother and Father project, with a corresponding book published by, of course, Dewi Lewis. On episode 193, Paddy discusses, among other things:The current Pictures From The Garden projectMother and Father ‘proper work'Early years: sister and boarding schoolAbandonment and loss but always ending on hopeAll his books being autobiograhicalOxford PicturesEmpty DaysDocumentary - personal documentSeaside photographs Referenced:Gerry BadgerAshmolean MuseumDewi LewisSamuel PalmerSir Nick Serota Website | Instagram“You try and capture the world don't you? Something a bit different this week as Alexa is joined by two guests. Cat Ogden is a singer and vocal coach who specialises in singing for mental health and wellbeing, and she is alongside founder of Sing Now, Sarah Joyce. As you'll see from the episode title, congratulations are in order as both guests on Singing Teachers Talk are expecting, so the topic of conversation today is all around understanding pregnancy for the singer and the self-employed.   KEY TAKEAWAYS In Dr Catherine Gardner's report, she notes that the common physical experiences of pregnancy such as nausea, vomiting, breathlessness, swelling, reflux, difficulty sleeping, and fatigue were sometimes made worse by singing. Cat experienced debilitating sickness while pregnant with her second child which led to vomiting, weight loss, and hospitalisation. As someone who is self-employed, there was nobody to fall back on while she was ill. There was no one else to take her students' lessons and she had to do it all herself.  The vomiting she experienced while ill affected Cat's voice but she was able to find support from Pregnancy Sickness Support, which is linked in the notes below.  The positive impacts that pregnant women brought up in Dr Gardner's research included greater breath awareness, reduced performance anxiety and the ability to refocus priorities.    BEST MOMENTS ‘I was literally vomiting either side of lessons'  ‘Acid reflux through trimesters 1, 2, and 3 was a really big one for me'  ‘When it comes to performing I'm more relaxed than I ever have been'   EPISODE RESOURCES  BAST Training    Guest Website: sarah-joyce.co.uk sing-now.co.uk catogdensinging.com   Social Media:  @sarahjoycesing @catogdensinging   Relevant Links & Mentions:  Singing Teachers Talk Podcast: Episode 55 - Teaching Singing for Mental Health and Wellbeing with Cat Ogden: https://open.spotify.com/episode/7EE00DU5gciDilLMAfq1SG?si=50834e119d7141e8 Dr Catherine Gardner: singingfortwo.com Vocal Health Education: vocalhealtlh.co.uk Pregnancy Sickness Support: https://www.pregnancysicknesssupport.org.uk/; @pregnancysicknesssupport Medication List: https://ncvs.org/prescriptions/ Happy Mum Happy Baby Podcast: https://open.spotify.com/show/1q5dLwCTmrU4XNEy8cXyBX?si=c046318def5344e8 ABOUT THE GUEST  Sarah Joyce: On graduating from Guildford School of Acting in 2008, Sarah made her West End debut in Zorro at the Garrick Theatre, covering and playing the lead female role, Luisa. Welcome back to the technecast! Today's episode features a conversation between Beth Palmer, Robert Shaughnessy and Alicia Barnes reflecting on a series of seminars and workshops called ‘Imaginative Confrontations with Shakespeare: Truth, Reconciliation, Justice'. The series tackles questions such as how do we forgive the unforgivable, and who gets to say whether we should or not? They take one of Shakespeare's “problem plays”, ‘Measure for Measure' to think through these issues and how they intersect with our contemporary moment, exploring the literary and cultural canon in order to address the injustices that it has excused or obscured. In addition to Beth, Rob and Alicia's fascinating conversation, you'll hear scenes read from ‘Measure for Measure' and a scene written in a workshop led by Chinoyerem Odimba. *

This episode is a total joy. It's a conversation with my dear friend Debbie Hilton and it's all about something which comes naturally to all of us - but which most of us don't often do as adults. Dancing! It's beyond question that dancing is medicine. And it's medicine that we all have a right to benefit from. I feel truly privileged to be able to experience the joy of dancing in Debbie's classes. As I'm not a natural dancer and even struggle with my left/right, I'd feel really intimidated going to most classes - but Debbie is really passionate about making dance accessible to EVERYBODY. I've seen for myself what a simple one/two step to music can do for people's wellbeing on every level. It's no overstatement to describe it as magic. You'll hear us chat about: The astonishing health benefits of moving to music, including preventing and even reversing dementia. The huge boost to our mood and mental resilience that we get from moving our body to music.Dance as a moving meditation which helps us to get in the moment and gain perspective on the challenges we're facing in our life .How dancing increases our self-confidence and helps us to love the body we're in.Why we need to keep nurturing our child-like spark of creativitySimple ways to benefit from the magic of dance from your home - whatever age, shape or size you are. Debbie is pure inspiration and I promise that you'll feel differently about your relationship to dance after listening to her. Debbie is an actress and performing arts teacher. She trained in ballet and modern dance at The Northern Ballet school and then studied musical theatre at Guildford School of Acting. As well as working as a performer, it has been her privilege to coach many people ( aged 5-80 ) in performing arts. Debbie is deeply passionate about performing arts as a tool for improving health and wellbeing. She believes that, by tapping into and using our innate creative spark, we can gain more vitality and joy in life - and stay young! Chris is an inspirational voice teacher as well as person, and it was great to hear about her journey working with the voice. She is currently the Head of Voice at the Guildford School of Acting, with BA and MA's in Advanced Voice Studies. She works with actors, singers, and even politicians about how they can use their voices to their best effect. Her practice is all about learning from one another, what you can gain from each other from listening and observing from each others voices and traits in the rehearsal room, or indeed any circumstance in life! She takes me through the biology of the voice, what do to and what not to do when performing, and how to take care of it. The throat chakra and it connects the voice to the body. Significantly, how the voice is not just a sound from your voice box, it's a power that comes from every inch of your body. In addition, how you can empower it or detail it to any specific character. We also touch on deconstructing the challenges and reaping the rewards of tacking Shakespeare and working with accents! Great talk for anyone currently at, or trying to get to drama school, working actors, and even those who want to strengthen their voice. Poet Danez Smith writes: “Mary Moore Easter's Free Papers is dreaming in the archives. Through poems that document and redocument the life of Eliza Winston paired beside poems that reach across time to unite Black women in their quest to rapture the self from the prisons of nation and whiteness, Easter has built a hall of mirrors where one can come out of the other side free, transformed. Here, documents morph like a mind suddenly free from its last shackle. Don't miss this inspiring and uplifting interview with the delightful actor Emmy Happisburgh. Emmy talks about the reality of becoming ill with COVID herself, losing all of her work overnight and how she has coped - particularly the importance of having a strong mental health toolkit. I absolutely love this idea - that we create this for ourselves and actively have strategies that we use each and every day.Hugely resilient, Emmy has continued working and creating and like many actors, has found this to be nurturing and crucial for moving forward positively. She talks of the roaring Twenties and how, as we start to emerge from this pandemic, there will be an outpouring of creative need - both in terms of audiences wanting to experience theatre again (or in my case desperate to!) and in actors and theatres wanting to perform and showcase new media and new pieces. We can all learn so much from this interview. Homeschooling, for Emmy, second time around has been something she has fully embraced as in the first lockdown she was too ill. But also having to accept that "for this time I am mum and housewife and that's ok" - we find it so hard to accept our current reality but Emmy gives us great examples of how we CAN do that and probably must.Listen now - or watch on Unimenta YouTube where there are additional fun clips of Emmy and her work. Emmy Happisburgh trained at The Poor School (Acting), Guildford School of Acting (Musical Theatre) and with Complicite (Physical Theatre) and has been a professional theatre and screen actor for over twenty years. Emmy has played leads and supporting roles in numerous theatre productions including the title role in “Harper Regan” last year at the Tabard Theatre in which her performance was “Mesmerising” (Spy in the stalls), “Excellent in this demanding role” (London Pub Theatres) and “A tour de force… leading with elegance and raw energy that scorches throughout” (The Play’s The Thing).Predominantly a screen actor, Emmy’s roles include Judy in multi-award winning short “The River” and the part of Sylvia in short film "Leaves for the Moon" by Dhruv Bhatnagar for which she won the BEST ACTRESS AWARD at Westminster Film Festival 2019.TV credits include featured roles in BBC 1 “Casualty”, Netflix “Murder Maps” and feature “Ghost” on Amazon.Emmy also writes and produces and co-founded theatre company Contentment Productions in 2018.#resilience #actor #crisis #mentalhealth #wellbeing #adaptability See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

What do The Kennedys, planet Earth, 2012, and Shakespeare all have in common? They all have conspiracy theories attached to them. Whether you believe the Earth is flat, or that the world was actually going to end back in 2012, it's a great wonder why conspiracy theories happen in the first place. Who's prone to conspiracies? Why do we look to other means to make sense of the world around us? One of the conspiracies we hear all the time at Independent Shakespeare Co. is the question, "Do you actually believe William Shakespeare wrote all of those plays? Or do you think it was someone else?" So let's talk about it. On this episode of Saturday Strategy, host Johnny Themans welcomes guest Lucy Key, Owner and Performance Director at Performing Perfectly, to speak about communication and how performance and business are connected. To clearly articulate our message to who we’re working with, we need to be able to use our voice and body language to communicate better and improve our chances of success in business. The two discuss the parallels of the world of performance and the world of business. Effective communication is essential for any business to succeed and when you communicate in an engaging way, you get the best results. Lucy explains how much of stage performance comes from being a natural and how much comes from learned skills. She details why knowing your audience and environment is so important and how to actively develop your skills in this area, including techniques such as breath work and filming yourself. Then, Lucy shares how remaining authentic and confident, especially when making mistakes, and not being too polished makes a huge difference when presenting to a group. Johnny and Lucy then discuss cultural stereotypes and prejudices toward voices, while exploring the importance of personal ‘blind spots’, constructive feedback, and pushing people outside of their comfort zones. About our Guest: Lucy is a professional actress who has worked in theatre, opera, television, concert and cabaret. After training at Guildford School of Acting, Lucy’s performance credits include: Maria in West Side Story, The Prince of Wales Theatre, London and UK No. 1 tour, Grace Farrel in Annie, Perth Repertory Theatre, Of Thee I Sing, The Bridewell Theatre, London, Midsummer Nights Dream and Two Gentlemen of Verona, Regents Park Open Air Theatre, London, The Marriage of Figaro, New Vic Theatre, The Birthday Party, Chichester Festival Theatre. If in Washington State, we hope you will watch the play! Tickets can be purchased at www.sincerelyamerica.bpt.me. Listen to this podcast to learn more! Sincerely, America is inspired by the immigrant experience in an effort to create empathy and understanding for each other by reaching into the past to see the history of our community. The first play of the production, American Dreams, a play by Linda Britt and directed by Ellen Peters, focuses on the immigrant experience in the U.S., an experience which varies widely depending on country of origin, race, religion, age, and location allowing the characters to focus on the aspect of their story that is most meaningful to them. The second play of the production, The Art of Remembering, a play by Adina L. Ruskin and directed by Chevi Chung, shows three actors embodying different facets of a young woman who returns home to bury her father. While there, she cleans out her closet and with each object she discovers, she touches on the stories of her ancestors that are as diverse as a feisty Polish-Jewish émigré taking America by storm, an Argentine who stands against his country's repression, and a woman who witnesses the fall of the Berlin Wall. Together, Sincerely, America reminds us of the beauty of life and the importance of our past. Director Ellen Peters has earned a B.A. in theatre and psychology from Bates College in Maine and an Ed.M. in Administration, Planning and Social Policy from Harvard University. She has also studied improvisational comedy. Ellen has performed on stage and screen with professional and community productions and has directed and taught at community theatres in Maine and in Washington, D.C., all prior to her move to Tacoma in 2011. While in Maine, she served on the LA Arts Board and the Lewiston Auburn Public Theatre (AEA) Board. As Chair of the Education Committee, Ellen spearheaded a school liaison program, which engaged a more diverse audience. Since moving to Washington state, Ellen has served on the Board of Tacoma Little Theatre and acted and/or directed with Tacoma Little Theatre, Dukesbay Productions, Toy Boat Theatre, and Found Space Productions. She has become increasingly interested in the impact of theatre on the audience and the larger community and focuses her interests on scripts which prompt discussion and educate and challenge. Ellen is delighted to be a part of the Tacoma arts community and is an administrator at the University of Puget Sound. He talks about getting cut from the final edit of Band of Brothers, how a clever self-tape landed him with an offer to work with M. Night Shyamalan, and honestly shares how even after booking the ever-coveted “series regular role,” he’s finding new depths to what is required of an actor and artist when a life and career changing opportunity comes to an end.  He’s most known for his hilarious and honest portrayal on the hit FXX show, You’re the Worst, as well as his work on Modern Family, After Earth, and in the soon-to-be-released film Detective Pikachu with Ryan Reynolds.  Chris Geere is a British actor born in Cambridge in 1981 and brought up in the Winchester area of Hampshire where his family still lives. He was initially interested in pursuing a career as an artist until a drama teacher encouraged him to play in his school's production of 'A Midsummer Night's Dream', whereupon he admits that he was truly bitten by the acting bug. He gained a place at the Guildford School of Acting, winning out over nearly three thousand other applicants. Some time after graduation he had a spell as a bit part player with the Royal Shakespeare Company and since then has become familiar on British television, notably in the school series 'Waterloo Road.' In 2017 he moved to the States, appearing in Modern Family and taking the lead in the eccentric comedy drama 'You're the Worst.' IG: @cwgeere

This week on The Oh Beep! Geocaching Podcast we ask should there be a limit put on the number of caches you can hide? What is the oddest thing you've found while out caching? Terrachache...3 days to find a sonic screwdriver Doctor Who's Sonic Screwdriver by sfcchaz. LC7R4 Whats the oddest thing you've found when out caching? For us it was ladies underwear.  Some of the answers from social media: UK Geocacher I have found two safes. Clearly taken to the wilderness to be ‘opened in private’ after their owners forgot the keys.  One was in Cambridge and the other in Reading. The only common denominator was me. They will never take me alive. Lisa George A pair of manikin legs! SangueG  lol, the mind boggles, but I found something very similar too :D ... What made our find funnier was what was next to it, what does Eore get up to? Was your find out in a wood?    Because of Geocaching... Feedback... From Corey Stevens - Here's a question for Dr. D(uck). If you were to create a cache that is rated a 5/5, what would it be like? From Scott Berks - Hey Guys, It's Scott Berks from the Chicago Geocacher Podcast, and one of the creators of going "full tangent" on a geocaching podcast. It's nice to hear (re: ep 22) that as we are on our way out, that tangents will continue on a geocaching podcast. Yes, you can steal that from us. The tangents made me laugh. Nice work! Dr.D(uck) your voice is great. I meant that as a complete compliment on my podcast. Along with your accent, it cracks me up. Don't change a thing. Question for Doctor D... Who's your doctor? Mine's Peter Davison. Although technically, my first episode was Tom Bakers last (Logopolis). So who is it technically? Tom or Peter? Discuss.(see how I created a tangent right there?) Great show guys. Sophie's absolutely adorable. Someone punch dad while on air for me. News & Events... Dr Who enthusiast erects full-size Dalek in his Muddiford garden By NDJDawn  |  Posted: March 05, 2014 Story from The North Devon Journal A full-scale Dalek has appeared outside a cottage in Muddiford, attracting the attention of Dr Who enthusiasts across the county. Phil Stroud, 65, built the Dalek seven years ago as a project with Barnstaple Youth House and as an avid Dr Who fan celebrated the 50th anniversary by putting the character on display. The figure currently looks out onto the road, which has surprised many passers-by and it has even been registered on a geocaching website. "The Dalek has become like the camel statues on the motorway, I suppose it is a bit of landmark now," said Phil. "I built it with the youth house years back; it took a couple of months to build. And when there was a commotion about the Dr Who 50th anniversary over Christmas, I thought this would be the perfect time to put it on show. "I was a bit sneaky when I took the Dalek out of the garage, it was late in the evening and I had to bring the sculpture out in pieces and assemble it in the garden." "I originally put it outside thinking it would just stay for a few weeks. Now it has drawn so much attention, I suppose I'm stuck with it." Phil has been sculpting and creating props throughout his life and career, following his study of 3-D Design at the Guildford School of Art, he went on to create work for artist David Mach and even created a sculpture for the Imperial War Museum. The Dalek figure is functional and has been used for fundraising events in Devon with the Barnstaple Youth House, and it was even entered into a dancing competition. "I took the Dalek to a Dr Who themed dancing competition in Torquay a while back too and won a prize," said Phil. "We had the theme music and people saying 'exterminate', it was brilliant." "So many people have stopped by the house and asked me about it, one man even offered to buy it; of course I told him it wasn't for sale. But then he showed me a photo of one he was building himself which is great." "I will keep the Dalek in front of my house now for as long as I can." Treasure hunt for the Wolds project Story from The Louth Leader The community heritage project Down Your Wold is appealing for volunteers to help lay heritage related geocaches at various locations throughout the Lincolnshire Wolds Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Geocaching is known as a modern day treasure hunt where participants use their smart phone’s GPS system to navigate through clues to find a hidden container. Down Your Wold project officer, Sam Phillips, said: “The training sessions are open to people who would like to lay a geocache in their village or favourite Wolds walk. “It is hoped that the hidden treasure will encourage people to enjoy the countryside, explore our wonderful Wolds villages and learn more about the fascinating heritage of our local landscape.” Anyone wanting to be involved or interested to learn more is invited to attend one of four training sessions planned this April. The two hour training session will be provided by Mike Eckersley, Chairman of Market Rasen Walkers are Welcome. The session will include an introduction for beginners followed by an opportunity for volunteers to sign up to a location and become part of this exciting initiative. The training sessions will take place on the following dates; volunteers only need to attend one session - Wednesday April 9 Afternoon session in Walesby Village Hall at 1.30pm. Evening session in Nettleton Village Hall at 6.30pm. Friday April 25 Afternoon session in the Orchard Gallery at Gunby Hall and Gardens at 1.30pm. Evening Session in Hemingby Village Hall at 6.30pm. Parking is available at all venues and refreshments will be provided. For more information on Down Your Wold please visit www.down-your-wold.co.uk or call 01507 609740. The Lincolnshire Wolds Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) is a nationally important and protected landscape, 216 square miles (558 sq km) was designated an AONB in 1973. Video of the week... Cool Electronic Geocache - Geocachespoilers. http://youtu.be/h_rDId45aLc Limiting Cache Owner Hides Debate... For: Can help reduction of saturation in an area - allowing more opportunity for others Someone else may have an idea that works better in an area that has been monopolised by one person May make maintenance easier -  less caches to maintain could make it quicker and easier to do so It may help improve quality - why waste your limited hides on bad caches/locations If the limit is reached and the CO want's to put another cache out, then they archive one they already have out.  This releases an area for someone else.  It helps refresh areas for hunters. For every person who leaves the game because of such a rule, more will fill the void Against: People should be allowed to hide as many as they want - its their time, money and effort There are always ways around these things - multiple accounts, etc.  So, whats the point? If one listing site imposes this rule, then people will move to another that doesn't If its just about quality - finders can limit their search criteria (by favourite points for example) Without people willing to hide caches, there is no game - they should be encouraged, not discouraged Where is the evidence for reduced quality/maintenance resulting from the number of hides a CO has? Feedback on this: Tony Liddell Difficult one. I think not, provided you're prepared to keep up the maintenance Mark Pickard Agree with Tony Liddell with out co's the game would die! It amazes me the number of ppl with a 1000+ finds that don't own a single cache, surely it can't be a case of take take take all the time? But that's a different topic Karl Brydon Quality and maintenance is more important - no limit on good, well paced, interesting and maintained caches. All other caches should be limited to none Mark Pickard But then on the subject of maintenence, how difficult is it to carry a few spare logs around with you? I'm amazed that a large proportion of folk don't, I know for a fact I have a full log in 1 of my caches but a certain thing called real life has meant I haven't been able to get to it to replace it yet, and I appreciate it when they do get swapped for me as it gives me a little more time to go caching myself UKGeocacher Yes. Approx 10% of your total finds. This ensures that you know what makes a quality hide. Also 2 many maint becomes a problem Sarah Clark: I don't think there should be a limit but I do think COs need to be responsible. If you can't maintain what you have then you shouldn't be making new hides. the Monkey King: There shouldn't be a limit, otherwise there wouldn't be any more caches to find. On the other hand, if a CO is hiding really bad caches, then there should be a limit so as to improve the caches being hidden. More caches, better caches. Next Week... The first Oh Beep! pub quiz...
