In this week's conversation between Dr. James Emery White and co-host Alexis Drye, they discuss two recent docuseries that have drawn a lot of attention: FX's “The Secrets of Hillsong” exploring the distressing global patterns of misconduct at Hillsong Church, as well as Prime Video's “Shiny Happy People” exposing the nightmarish home life of the Duggar Family and the Institute in Basic Life Principles (IBLP). Episode Links Dr. White wrote a blog on the mess at Hillsong Church titled “Should Churches Still Use Music from Hillsong?” It definitely brought up a lot of points to consider, especially when it comes to contributions through royalties. You can read that blog HERE. Dr. White wrote another blog titled “Should a Church Use NDAs” that has become a big issue for churches like Hillsong that are coming to light. And as he mentioned during today's conversation, the Hillsong docuseries left a lot to be desired, and even some people who were hurt by it. You can read “The Secrets of Hillsong: An Open Letter to the Director” to see what we mean. There are a couple podcasts we suggest that you check out where they've discussed some of the issues that lead to failings like what happened at Hillsong. These are: CCP40: On Criticism of Mega Churches, CCP31: On Celebrity Pastors, CCP4:On Pastors and Moral Failings. A recent podcast is also worth going back to listen to as it helps explain how organizations like the IBLP draw people in, even when their practices are so extreme. It's CCP64: On Cults and Conspiracy Theories. There are several news stories that were mentioned during today's conversation or that would be helpful for you to check out as they relate to this episode: Roxanne Stone, “What the New Hillsong Doc Gets Right … and Wrong + Janice Lagata,”Religion News Service, June 8, 2023. Emily Hunter McGowin, “Shiny Miserable Family: How Bill Gothard's Ministry Missed the Sin Inside,”Christianity Today, June 9, 2023. Mariah Espada, “The True Story Behind the Duggar Family Docuseries Shiny Happy People,”TIME, June 2, 2023. Russell Moore, “We Believe in the Power of the Gospel, Not the Gospel of Power,”Christianity Today, June 7, 2023. Amy Julia Becker, “Opinion: Hillsong Was Extraordinary. That's The Problem.”The Roys Report, June 5, 2023. “Exit Music (For A Church),”Christianity Today, June 9, 2023. Finally, Dr. White encouraged pastors to remember that they are not above being susceptible to moral failings. He wrote about this in his book What They Didn't Teach You in Seminary which you can order HERE. You'll gain practical tips to help you reignite your own passion for education. https://alwaysalesson.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/08/Intervie-3.png ()Quotables Admit what you don't know and find ways to be a learner around that.  Everyone DESERVES a thought partner. Whatever happens today, the next presentation will definitely be better. Don't be afraid to ask for support. The most successful educators that I've been around are not afraid to hand it over to their students.  If you can't walk the talk, it becomes really challenging for your colleagues to gain that trust.  When it comes to teacher leadership, it's really just about understanding and deploying empathy and really understanding what's being said and what's not being said in a way that we can support without the bells and whistles of something that isn't attainable.  About Brian Brian Sepe is educator, instructional coach, and consultant. He is passionate about exploring the habits, beliefs, and ideas of people who teach and is driven by the idea that everyone deserves a thought-partner and trusted coach. Brian received his MA from Canisius College and began his work in classrooms as a teacher and coach through the partnership with the Teachers College Reading and Writing Project. He spent 17 years in Buffalo, NY as an elementary and middle school teacher and instructional coach. During the day, Brian can be found in classrooms supporting and empowering educators to find their voice and pursue their goals for their own learning and their impact on students. When Brian is not in the classroom, he serves as an adjunct professor at Canisius College and as a consultant and coach for the Western New York Teacher Residency Program. A program where early career educators experience a one year residency with a Master-Teacher in the city of Buffalo, NY. Brian is also a consultant with the Instructional Coaching Group (ICG) with Jim Knight and learning partner with Growth Coaching International (GCI) In his free time, Brian enjoys writing for Choice Literacy, spending time with his family, and coaching baseball. Don't give up on your vision. When you have vision, communicate vision, and act on it- that's when things happen. It's not about you and what you do. Jamal is known for his ability to plan strategically; helping those he serves create action steps to accomplish their vision and overcome the challenges of school leadership. Jamal obtained his first leadership role at the age of 16, managing a fast-food restaurant, leading his peers as well as adults. His success continued as he opened a new location of a franchise recruiting and training team members which resulted in several awards for sales and performance. Jamal shifted to education and continued to grow in the ability to develop people. He taught for 9 years then served as a school Principal. He has led a school with as many as 92 staff members, serving approximately 950 families. He also provided support to a school Principal at a school that served approximately 2,100 families. Let's start the conversation now, before it's too late. Kids need a space to talk; find a way to make everyone feel safe. Start brainstorming and being creative with what is in our power to control. If we keep doing the same things, we are going to keep having the same problems. Your voice does matter! You're not going to change policy, and I'm not going to change policy, but together we can make a difference. Don't give up on the system. You won't want to miss this important discussion! https://alwaysalesson.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/05/empowering-educators-podcast-12.png ()Quotables Coaches are the figure it out people What coaches end up doing is treating teachers the way they want to be treated and not the way the teacher wants to be treated. Don't treat people the way you want to be treated but the way they want to be treated. There is a skill to be built to sense when something is off. Listen to better understand. If they can talk about it they can move through it and get back to instruction. Being self aware is really powerful. About Becca: Becca Silver is the founder and CEO of The Whole Educator. The end of the school year is the perfect time to reflect and prepare for the following year. It is important that we don't assume teachers need the same support year after year, and that we get to the root of the problems we can help with. Listen in on this Clubhouse Chat where we share strategies for adapting your coaching methods to meet the needs of all teachers. https://alwaysalesson.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/Bonus-Episode-3.png ()Quotables Find the true root of the problem. Divide and conquer. To be an effective leader, you don't have to do it all. Lean on folks, but don't push. You have to figure out what someone needs in order to get better, and a lot of times, it is not what they are asking for. People first, mindset second, professional growth third. You can be an effective professional and still be yourself. When you can leverage the talent within your building you become such a stronger leader. Teachers are stressed out now more than ever before. As teacher leaders, it is important that we know and understand the stressors our teachers face so that we can help with solutions. Listen in on this Clubhouse Chat as we discuss the stressors our teachers are facing and how we can help. https://alwaysalesson.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/Bonus-Episode-4.png ()Quotable We need to give them (teachers) a voice especially right now with stress. They might feel like when we are giving them a solution it's just one more thing because it may not fit there personality, style, or their day to day. Maybe we need to rethink the whole process of the requirement of the lesson plan. When we limit options, that immediately decreases stress.  We have to move past traditional PD. It's too much. Many of our teachers are mourning traditional practices. We are not going back to normal so we have to help guide teachers to find their new identity.  Help teachers develop the mindset of turning this impossible situation into a possible opportunity. Make time to visit classrooms… just to check in. Teachers want us to listen but they also want us to see what's happening. The morale and the culture (of the school) helps us to retain teachers. This past year has challenged educators to look at education and learning in a new light. Do you find yourself apologizing for how you are implementing your teaching? Whenever you apologize, it sends the message that whatever you're going to say or do is unimportant or unexciting. Apologizing for the work that we do, that we know is essential to moving forward, is actually having the opposite effect. Why do we apologize? It's a way to connect with the other person/state the obvious/acknowledge their thoughts or feelings. We have to embrace new opportunities...fun exploration, off the beaten path, is honestly where the best memories are made, when we are forced out of our routine and out of our plan. Spencer is currently a full-time instructional coach at a K-5 elementary school and a teacher wellness mentor. She is also a former teacher. Spencer taught 2nd grade, 5th grade and 6th grade before becoming an instructional coach. Her time as a teacher taught her so much about what she wanted in life and also a lot about the role burnout plays in our health and wellness. Spencer's goal is to help teachers feel seen as a human first and create a space and community where they can turn to to receive empathy, empowerment and personal development tools. She recently got married to her long-time best friends, Tim! She has two dogs, Layla + Vladdy. Spencer was born and raised in Livonia, Michigan and then moved to Arizona after college graduation. The move sparked her love for travel, if she could live anywhere it would be on an island. You can usually find her working on mentorship, binging Schitt's Creek, or planning her next adventure ! https://alwaysalesson.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/08/empowering-educators-podcast-8.png ()Quotables If you put yourself out there, the fact that you put that energy out there, everything is going to come back tenfold. If you want to connect to more likeminded people, you have to put yourself out there and find your tribe. You can create your own reality. Imposture syndrome can rule your life, especially for new teachers. Watching other teachers and learning walks are a great learning tool. Self is more than taking a few minutes for yourself. It is prioritizing yourself. Setting boundaries, creating powerful routines and mindset are tools to help overcome or avoid burnout. What do we really believe? If we believe it, we need to see it in action in classrooms. Great educators have purpose for their work and they know what their vision of successful students are going to be for each child.  If we can grow in reflection, we can change a teacher's thinking forever. It's ok to change your mind. If you get new information, you need to modify your thinking based on new information. You have to build a bridge from your brain to someone else's brain. Get out there and tell people to try it out. Take the best practices that are being shared and reality that is happening on campuses and build the bridge between the two. Sometimes you have to give students your faith because they don't have it themselves. Teachers can come around and have a new day just like students. Give them the faith. Anytime you are stuck or overwhelmed, take the time to stop and learn to keep yourself motivated. Making teachers feel heard and seen and creating a community where people can learn and fail and keep going is important for a collaborative talk sequence. Focusing is an element that makes teachers great. It transcends into every part of teaching.  If we can help teachers really see their beliefs, we can empower them to not be focused on all the things but to instead focus on the foundational things.  You have to have boundaries with your time and energy as a classroom teacher and mentor. Recognize within yourself that you need to stop and take a breather.  In our minds can make things seem overwhelming, but we have to stop and think about how long it will take to do something really well.  The power of asking questions and listening to the teachers you get to work with and understanding their values is so important to empower everyone at large.  Train yourself to see the light and good to increase your motivation and the energy you are bringing to your students. Craig Randall is the author of Trust-Based Observations. His experience as a counselor, coach, teacher, and principal at schools in the US and overseas led him to develop and then write, Trust-Based Observations, a model of observation and evaluation focused on building trusting relationships that spark teacher risk-taking and innovation, and result in teaching and learning growth. Currently, Craig consults and trains schools on the model. Tune in to hear this bonus edition episode with Craig Randall! https://alwaysalesson.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/craig-randall.png ()QuotablesWhat were you doing to help students learn? If you had to do it again, what would you do differently? By asking teachers about their teaching rather than telling them what to do you start the road to trust based observations. When you ask your opinion of their own teaching, you give them control and they are more willing to try and take risk. You have to have a heart to kids, and hold on to it, to be a great teacher. The teachers that are the most amazing teachers have a differentiated relentlessness for each student they teach. Never loose the feeling of vulnerability of being observed whether you know its coming or not, and maintain empathy forever for teachers who are working in environment where you never know what's going to happen. As you move into teacher leadership sometimes we think "My way is THE way," be open to multiple ways to be successful. There is a talent within the building but you have to be willing to look at it from a different perspective.  Teachers are much more willing to grow their practice when you ask teachers about their practice, see them frequently enough where you know their practice, and sharing their strengths. Right now observations happen to us, trust based observations allow growth to happen with us. Teachers are willing to show up as their best when principals are consistent. This promotes risk taking and everyone continuing to do their best. Join the Simply Coaching RetreatIf you support and lead teachers, this virtual retreat is for you!
