Can the dietary choices we make right now affect how we feel later in the day? What’s the difference between “doing” health and creating health? In this episode of the Align Podcast, Drew and I discuss how the food that we consume can impact our mental health both in a positive or negative way. For example, incorporating brain food such as omega-3 fatty acids and leafy greens are proven to help promote healthy brain functions and keep your mood stable. Plus, we talk about how individuality is not something that is taken into consideration on social media when advice is shared in regards to health and diets. We all have different genetics and needs in terms of nutrition and following a cookie-cutter rule for nutrition can lead to unintentional malnutrition. Drew Ramsey, M.D. is a psychiatrist, author, and farmer. He is a clear voice in the mental health conversation and one of psychiatry's leading proponents of using nutritional interventions. He is an assistant clinical professor of psychiatry at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons. Drew Canole is a rockstar in the world of fitness, nutrition, and mindset. He is the Founder of Organifi, an organic line of superfoods, and the Chief Inspiration Officer of FitLifeTV, a lifestyle brand founded on the principle that demonstration of positive change has the power to start a revolution. What revolution? Well, Drew aims to inspire and motivate others to search deep within themselves to create prosperous, healthy, and enriching lifestyles because he believes that when you improve one life – even your own – you improve the world. I spent a weekend with Drew before we sat down to record this episode, and he absolutely blew my mind – especially with his spiritual mindset. There are a lot of good business people out there, but I don't think I’ve ever met another entrepreneur with such strong spiritual qualities. In This Conversation We Cover: [2:30] Three questions that Drew asked attendees at the conference we both attended. [5:50] How only drinking Green Drinks for seven days led to a multi-million company. [12:00] How Drew leveraged video to create a massive following (over 4 million people), and why he’d use Facebook Live if he had to do it again today. [13:00] Being a Guide versus being a Guru. [16:30] The key ingredients to a good Facebook Live. [21:40] Shifting away from being ego-driven. [23:30] How VR and AR will change video content in the future. [25:30] The importance of having an avatar for your business or brand. [27:05] Why Drew isn’t even on the org. chart in his business. [28:40] How Drew “elevates and delegates.” [32:10] Drew’s hiring process. [33:50] Drew’s ONE Thing (and his plan to make it happen). [35:50] Why Drew “dates” his employees. [38:30] What “segment intending” is and why Drew does it. [42:25] Practicing the abundance mindset and getting to a true, authentic state of abundance. [49:00] How Drew uses the law of reciprocity. [53:40] The dark periods of Drew’s business and what he did to get himself out of it. The ‘Why’ Behind Drew’s Questions What would you do if you have 10 minutes to live? What would you do if you have 10 days to live? What would you do if you have 10 years to live? Drew is a firm believer that if you can change yourself, you can change the world… but in order to change yourself, you have to stop the world. When you meditate on these questions, it pulls you outside of you and you become an observer of yourself. This exercise aims to silence your mind enough for you to realize whether or not you’re doing what’s truly important. If you really sit with yourself and consider these questions, it can shock you into being super present and aware of what’s next – and from that place, you can create and manifest your future. Leveraging Video to Create a Following Drew has successfully leveraged video to create a massive following, the vanguard of his FitLife revolution. He primarily used YouTube, but that isn’t what he’d suggest someone else do today. In today’s social media landscape, Facebook Live videos are a much better way of getting social engagement than a YouTube video on a young account. “I’ve made over 1,000 videos on YouTube, and then I look at the traffic that it’s generating to my website, and it’s dismal compared to what a Facebook Live could do.” Of course, it never hurts to do both! Drew’s key ingredients for a good Facebook Live: Be yourself. Get grounded and “cement yourself to your Why.” Why are you doing this? What do you want to hear from people after this Facebook Live? What do you want them to see? What do you want them to feel in their body? What’s one word that you want them to experience as they’re watching this? Guide VS Guru Drew thinks “there’s way too many gurus out there,” and I’m inclined to agree. Everywhere you look, there’s someone else popping up who wants you to follow them so that they can change the planet. Drew believes that...

Having led in both restaurants and a startup, Drew is no stranger to the travails of leadership, mentorship, and management in chaotic, cash-constrained environments. He currently serves as Human Capital Advisor to Fulcrum Investing and as an Engagement Manager for Artemis Connection. He recently published his first book, “What I Learned Before 30.” Drew climbed the ladder of the restaurant industry as many do: with a great deal of empathy, a little bit of luck, and a massive amount of overconfidence. After graduating from Harvard in 2009, he worked his way up from being a busboy in Boston to being a beverage director for Momofuku in New York City, where he managed the buying, pricing, and selling of wine, beer, and spirits for the restaurant. He decided that he wanted to have more ownership of the guest experiences he was creating, so he took to Chicago to see how Booth could help him open his own restaurant. While attending Booth, Drew met his business partner, Hunter Swartz, and the two quickly realized that their shared background in endurance sports mixed with complementary work experiences could build something remarkable. Drew joined the Eastman Egg team in January 2014 and served as COO for three years. In his time there, the company grew to four operating units and grew its revenues and team each by a factor of 10. What you’ll learn about in this episode: Why Drew decided to leave a business that he built up The importance of actually taking action The coaching groups and one-on-one sessions Drew built after leaving his business Being open-minded to change in your business and being ready to not necessarily stick with your original idea Why culture is more about how you interact with your team and your customers and less about how well written your mission statement is Incentivizing people to act in accordance with your company culture How to attract the right candidates Why you should ask your team “why do you work?” The benefits of empathetic leadership The difference between working towards something and finishing something and why it matters Ways to contact Drew: Website: www.86gravity.com Email: drew@86gravity.com Book: “What I Learned Before 30” Resources: Book: “Designing Your Life” by Bill Burnett and Dave Evans

No problem, you'll find a text transcribe below, and you can also for later. → Read the Transcript Okay, everybody. Today, I'm going to talk about Google Analytics segments. You've all probably wondered at one point or another, "What are these things up here, this blue circle? This orange circle? Why would I want to use them? Who cares? What is Google Analytics?" You've probably wondered all those things. That's what I'm going to talk about today.Google Analytic segments, first. Why would you want to use them? Really, the question is why would you want to segment your users, and I think there's many reasons to that. You might want to compare your email traffic to your pay traffic, or users from one part of the country to another part of the country. Want to save this transcribe to read later? to download it as a PDF. Why I segment, is because I want to get a growth. The way to do that, is first identify your most powerful, your best customers out there. I call them your whale segments. These are the ones that are driving your business. Once you've identified them, grow that segment. Any business has good and bad customers. It's not uncommon to see that 20% of your customers drive 80% of your revenue. I call that 20% to your whale segment. We're going to use Google Analytics to start to investigate who those whales are, and how we can acquire more of them. The first question you're probably asking is, "How do I identify those best customers?" I'm going to give you three metrics. RFM they're called, that you can use to start to poke around and start to figure out who those best customers are. There are three behavioral metrics, and they were piling by the catalog industry in the '50's. If you want to read up on RFM, here's a great Wikipedia article. Really, in summary, recency means how recently was somebody on your site. A customer who was on your site today, or who bought from you today is more valuable than one who bought from you two years ago. Seems intuitive enough. Frequency is the total number of interactions a visitor or customer has had. Somebody who has purchased from you 10 times is probably more valuable to you than someone who's purchased from you once. Monetary value is just the total dollar amount that somebody has spent with your retailer or your site. That's RFM. Really, there are different thresholds.
There are not a lot of positive messages in the media today. Even when great information that provides a lot of real world value for people shows up, it's often disguised in sensationalized story; something that makes you watch but doesn't necessarily make you think. I'm so proud of the friends in my life who, as of late, have been making their way onto major network television. They are great people and great teachers who are sliding their messages of positivity and health into the mainstream and it's really amazing to witness it all. No one is more fitting for this mission than my friend Drew Manning. Drew has been on my show before and absolutely blew me away with his story. He started off as a typical gym-going, strict diet-eating, protein shake-guzzling "fit" person working as a personal trainer. He eventually found that he couldn't relate in a deep way to a lot of his clients' weight struggles, so he decided to run an experiment to change that. Drew took it upon himself to gain over 70 pounds in the course of six months and the transformation that took place was shocking! Not only did he look like a totally different person, but he thought and felt like a different person, and the veil that disconnected him from understanding his clients started to be lifted. Drew knows that his stint being significantly overweight pales in comparison to those who've struggled for years with their weight. But it opened up the bridge to understanding, and his small experiment caught on like wildfire. Drew proceeded to lose those 70+ pounds over the following six months (with immense struggle and heartache) and the experience was properly dubbed the Fit2Fat2Fit experience. Now, nearly 5 years later, Drew's experience is being duplicated by fit trainers from all over the country, to put themselves into the client's shoes for a bit in hopes to find more empathy and a better way to help people become the best version of themselves. After listening to this episode, make sure to set your timer for Fit to Fat to Fit on A&E! In this episode you'll discover: What drove Drew Manning to do his fit2fat2fit experiment in the first place. Why Drew decided to put the time and energy into making his experience into a television show. What other trainers experienced as a result of following Drew's fit2fat2fit experiment. How patience can play an important role in seeing some of our biggest goals come to fruition. Why your goals get so much more juice when they involve helping other people. Why there's a lot of judgment and misunderstanding between people who are overweight and people who are fit. How your body becomes adapted to your environment. How more people can finish "the weight loss race" together. Why we tend to not value our health much until we lose it (this is powerful!). How people can lose their identity when their body composition changes. Items mentioned in this episode include: Onnit.com/Model

Our health resides in a delicate balance. Each and every day, the actions we take are leading us towards health or away from health depending upon the decisions we make. One week of "dirty bulking" or "falling off the wagon" can cause tremendous harm to our bodies that science is just starting to understand. No matter how healthy you may be, if you and I start guzzling strawberry sodas by the case for a week and go in to get our blood work done, we'd both likely be diagnosed with pre-diabetes pretty easily... and this is just in one week! Now, what if we were to stretch that out, say, six months? And this time, not guzzling strawberry sodas (strawberry was obviously my favorite), but instead simply consuming the processed, "wholesome" package foods that much of our society subsides on... what do you think would happen with our health? Well, my guest today knows exactly what will happen, because he had the courage to put this experiment to the test. Our guest today is New York Times bestselling author Drew Manning. He was an extremely fit guy who took the Pepsi Challenge (literally) and transformed his life in the most surprising way. His journey, from being a lifelong fit person, to packing on the fat like he was getting paid for it, to becoming incredibly fit again, became a real phenomenon that inspired countless people all over the world to take on their own journey to fit, and the results have been mind-blowing. You're about to learn from Drew exactly how he put on major fat in just six months, and exactly how he shed it all off again in another six months. You're going to learn about the inner battle that happens when you're working to get back in shape, and some powerful insights to help you (or someone you love) to conquer them. What stands out about Drew is his heart, which I'm sure you'll pick up on today. I'm truly honored to have him on and to be able to share this with you. Enjoy, listen with your head and your heart, and put these things into action for yourself. In this episode you'll discover: Why personal experience trumps everything. Why never having a weight issue created a separation between Drew and his clients. How Drew’s wife surprisingly contributed to his 70 pound weight gain (this is funny!) What foods Drew chose to eat that caused him to gain 70 pounds in just 6 months. Why the foods Drew ate changed the way his body operated. How it can be hard NOT to exercise. How exercise bulimia compares to a positive habit of exercise. How Drew’s weight gain began to affect the relationship with his wife. Why sleep apnea can lead to overeating and a drastic decrease in energy. How your energy and mood impacts your life overall. The huge revelation Drew had about why people become comfortable being unhealthy. Why the mental and emotional aspects of weight loss are far more important than any weight loss program. How drinking soda drastically impacted Drew’s mind and body. What one of the biggest causes of overeating is (and how to avoid it!) Some of the important things people need to do when recovering from food addictions and working to transform their health. How accountability can help you make breakthroughs in your health and fitness goals. The radical transformation Drew made within 30 days of his weight loss journey (with a change in his diet alone!) What Dr. Oz had to say about Drew’s liver health due to his 70 pound weight gain. The startling impact that being overweight had on Drew’s confidence in the gym. Why Drew chose to workout “smarter” instead of longer (the results speak for themselves!) Items mentioned in this episode include: * Onnit.com/Model
