Debbie and Latt Mansor sat down again to dive into research on how, when and why to use Ketone IQ to improve performance and recovery. I would love to be talk about these with you on a new episode on your podcast, since it is the first time in history that a study actually uses exogenous ketones for anaerobic exercise. Overview and link to pre public manuscript below: METABOLIC EFFECTS OF R-1,3-BUTANEDIOL (KETONE-IQ) DURING AEROBIC AND ANAEROBIC EXERCISE BOUTS. A new Ketone-IQ research study was recently completed at a top US senior military university (University of North Georgia) — The study has been submitted to Frontiers in Physiology as of March 30, 2023 and currently under review. The findings showed supplementation of Ketone-IQ significantly increases blood ketones and significantly improves anaerobic performance while decreasing fatigue levels on a repeated cycle ergometer. The potential mechanism may include glycogen sparing effect which has already previously been show in studies with exogenous ketones but the more novel hypothesis could be the cognitive benefit that Ketone-IQ is providing the participants to have a significant effect on mental resilience and strength For the first time ever, exogenous ketones were used as a nutritional strategy to assess its effects on anaerobic exercise since all the performance studies in the past using exogenous ketones have been focused on endurance exercise. Ketone-IQ shifts metabolism towards fats as shown by respiratory exchange ratio (RER) in both 5 km aerobic exercise and anaerobic bouts of exercise. Ketone-IQ taken together with carbs have shown to increase anaerobic average power output, peak power output and velocity in the Wingate Anaerobic Test. Ketone-IQ has also shown decrease fatigue during anaerobic exercise. Dr. Latt Mansor is the new Research Lead of H.V.M.N, and we're proud to share his fascinating research and upcoming work with our listeners! In Dr. Mansor's thesis study, he found that the diabetic heart retains metabolic flexibility to adapt to hypoxia. Hypoxia is a condition when the body lacks adequate oxygen. Since diabetic hearts are more prone to hypoxia, getting closer to understanding if it could adapt to it was an important finding. For context, diabetes and hypoxia have opposing effects on metabolic substrates in the heart. Diabetes promotes fatty acid oxidation and suppresses glycolysis, whereas adaptation to hypoxia suppresses fatty acid oxidation and promotes glycolysis. The key result of Dr. Mansor's paper was that diabetic hearts did indeed adapt to chronic hypoxia, by increasing glycolysis and decreasing fatty acid oxidation. One of the greatest challenges of training is successfully attaining "functional overreaching". Pushing your maximal capacity results in stress that leads to beneficial adaptations...making your body stronger, faster, & better. What happens when you do it wrong? Aptly named, "non-functional overreaching" occurs. Nothing will help besides rest and recovery. In the case of "overtraining", the more serious form of overreaching, it might take months for even the most elite athletes to bounce back. A recent study found promising signs that ketone esters can alleviate overreaching symptoms. The researchers didn’t necessarily look at how ketones acutely influence exercise performance, but rather how consistent supplementation could affect recovery and training capacity. The lead researcher, Professor Peter Hespel, described the potential effect of ketones in recovery as “unseen” and “many times greater” than what he’s seen with other nutritional supplements. Wait...hasn't ketones been shown to reduce inflammation in prior studies? When a new study researched the effects ketones have on inflammation, the results were opposite to what everyone expected...including the researchers themselves. The paper was published in the Journal of Molecular Nutrition and Food Research, and the research group that carried out the work were led by Dr Jonathan Little at the University of British Columbia. Rather than inhibiting the inflammatory response through BHB’s (a ketone body) actions on the NLRP3 inflammasome, the researchers found that activity of several immune markers was higher when people had consumed ketones. It can be easy to jump to conclusions and state that "Exogenous Ketones = Increased Inflammation"...as the title of the paper acutely suggests. Dr. Brianna Stubbs tackles this study and provides further, necessary nuance on how the experiment was conducted, why the results may actually be more positive than negative, and why this development warrants future research. Hello listeners, and welcome to the HVMN Podcast. It’s Dr. Brianna Stubbs. We’re switching things up here this week, as I’ll be your host...giving Geoff a bit of time off! This week, we are going to look at the topic of Science communication. If you’ve tuned in to my Research Roundup series, which can get quite science-heavy at times, you may find that it can be tough to follow along with the medical terms and jargon. And honestly, it can be challenging for me to break down these complicated topics and make them interesting and accessible for people who have different levels of background science knowledge. When thinking about the ‘art and science’ of communication, with science you might need to go even more towards the art - to try and bridge the gap between research and public understanding. This has always been a pain point. With the inescapable rise of social media and the big uptick in numbers of scientists and influencers in health and performance who are taking to Twitter to share their findings and thoughts, science communication has changed a lot in the last few years. It will surely continue to evolve. I explore this hefty topic with Dr. Paige Jarreau, whose research focuses on the intersection of science communication, journalism, and new media. Along with teaching at LSU, she works at LifeOmic, a telemedicine app we touch upon in this episode.
